When David S. Ward's "Major League" slid into multiplexes on April 7, 1989, a lot of people wrote it off as a pro baseball clone of the minor-league-set "Bull Durham." A wise veteran catcher (Tom Berenger) with bad knees looking down the barrel of a forced retirement? Check. A screwy rookie pitcher (Charlie Sheen) with a flamethrower for an arm and no semblance of control? Check. A superstitious slugger (Dennis Haysbert) who demands to sacrifice a live chicken to get him out of a hitting slump? Check.
The very existence of these familiar elements was enough for many of the nation's critics to dismiss "Major League" as a meatheaded comedy. Moviegoers did not concur. The film grossed $50 million in the U.S. on an $11 million budget, and earned an A- CinemaScore before turning into a home video/pay cable sensation. By the time the next baseball season rolled around, "Major League" was considered a full-fledged,...

One of baseball’s most iconic voices is now silent after Bob Uecker, the famous Baseball Hall of Famer, Milwaukee Brewers announcer, and actor, died on Thursday. According to Uecker’s family, he dies after losing a battle with small-cell lung cancer. He was 90.
The Brewers announced Uecker’s passing on Thursday, releasing the following statement:
“Today, we take on the heaviest of burdens. Today, we say goodbye to our beloved friend, Bob Uecker.
“Ueck was the light of the Brewers, the soundtrack of our summers, the laughter in our hearts, and his passing is a profound loss. He was the heart and soul of Wisconsin and a dear friend. Bob loved people; his presence warmed every room, and he had a way of welcoming all of us into his world as if we were lifelong friends.
“Saying goodbye to Bob shakes us all. He was so much more than a Milwaukee Brewers icon.

Hello again, everybody. JoBlo.com here bidding you a big Wahoo welcome to Wtf Happened to This Movie?! That’s right, the Cleveland Indians are well on their way to clinching the Al East – which means the 1989 sports comedy Major League is well on its way to becoming a classic of the genre.
But how did Major League reach this status? How did it become one of the most quotable comedies of the decade? How did the cast pull off pitching, swinging and winning like a professional baseball team? How did it go on to represent Cleveland even though it wasn’t even shot there? And why did they have to make those sequels? Well, let’s go juuuuuust a bit outside to find out: Wtf Happened to this Movie?!
You might be surprised to know that Major League comes courtesy of the same guy who won an Oscar for writing The Sting.

Major League is a shining example of the comedy sports movie genre, but its original twist ending would have given it an entirely different story. Released in 1989 to a heap of critical and commercial success, Major League was the perfect spoof of the classic baseball movie and featured a wealth of underdog characters. Besides being sidesplitting, the premise was based on a genuine love of America's pastime and delivered exciting baseball action on top of its laughs. Major League's success justified two sequels in the 1990s, and its reputation as a classic sports movie has only continued to grow over the subsequent decades.
One of Major League's strongest aspects is its characters, and it delivers a compelling villain to go along with the conventional inspiring sports movie underdog heroes. Portrayed by Margaret Whitton, Major League's villain, Rachel Phelps, is just the right amount of dastardly to make the audience root for her eventual downfall.

Baseball fans are gearing up for a real-life “Field of Dreams” experience. After more than two years of planning, and six years after the idea first came about, Major League Baseball will unveil a specially constructed ballpark in Iowa on Thursday.
The Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees will face off at the baseball field located next to the cornfield where “Field of Dreams” was filmed.
The “MLB at Field of Dreams” event will include a “corn maze” featuring the MLB silhouetted batter logo, and a first-of-its-kind LED lighting system that will illuminate most of the 159 acres of corn fields surrounding the ballpark. Players will also sport special uniforms for the game.

[We're celebrating some of the most memorable horror and sci-fi movies of 1989 this month in Daily Dead's Class of 89 retrospective series! Check back on Daily Dead throughout the rest of August for more special features celebrating the 30th anniversaries of a wide range of horror and sci-fi films!]
Since I started contributing to Daily Dead right around the time the “Class of…” series hit the late ’80s, I tend to focus on movies that made an impact on me when I was a wee lad. Last year I focused on the light-hearted fantasy epic (with a bit of a horror streak) Willow, and the year before I took a look at the extreme S&m, incestual splatterpunk masterpiece (with a bit of a horror streak) Hellraiser. With these serving as the cinematic touchstones of my formative years, you can see why my personality tends to be a little all over the place.
For my Class of ’89 entry, I somehow found a movie from that year that A) represents a beloved movie from when I was a kid, B) has the whimsical, fantastical appeal of a movie like Willow, and C) subverts the notions of what it means to be...

As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, actress Margaret Whitton—best known for playing Cleveland Indians owner Rachel Phelps in the Major League movies—has died following what a friend described as a “brief battle with cancer.” Apparently, her illness came on so suddenly that she was still developing new projects as recently as a few months ago. Whitton was 67.
Born in Philadelphia in 1950, her first acting gigs were in plays in New York. She made her Broadway debut in 1982’s Steaming, where she and Judith Ivey both appeared nude as patrons of a women’s Turkish bath. Though she had small parts in films and TV shows, her first regular acting role outside of the theater was on CBS’s short-lived drama series Hometown, which was a loose adaptation of The Big Chill.

Witches of Eastwick 25th anniversary week ends this weekend. I intended to do much more but we'll see what little can be conjured still.
Cherries, Oatmeal, Satan and her weak husband just make her sick!
Film Experience Trivia: Veronica Cartwright was the star of the very first episode of Craig's "Take Three" series right here (well, at the old location) in 2010. He spotlighted her work in three genre pieces (Alien in which she was originally cast as Ripley (!!!) , Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Witches of Eastwick) concluding that she is the sci-fi-horror scream queen. On Witches:
Cartwright's skill at creating profoundly memorable characters is none more evident than in Witches: you see the very bile rise up in Felicia's face; she vehemently means every word in her religious rants, summoning up as she does some kind of wicked, wrathful acting goddess. With cherry-scented vomit (or even hospital oatmeal) smeared ungainly across her mouth,...

You probably recognize Rachel Nichols from her roles in numerous adventure flicks (no shame in that), because she's stood out in movies like "Star Trek," "Conan" and "G.I. Joe." But this action hero is about to embark on one of her toughest challenges yet: the romantic comedy.
Nichols' latest film, "A Bird of the Air," favors quiet subtext over CGI effects (well, except for one opinionated parrot), and a quirky librarian stalker (that's Nichols) over cliché chance encounters. Playing opposite the nearly silent Jackson Hurst, Nichols reminds us that a little crazy goes a long way.
We got the dirt on what enticed Nichols to play a character whom the audience hates, whether she'll ever get the Vulcan salute again and what's up with those rumors about Poison Ivy.
This is quite a departure from some of your recent films. What made you want to make this movie?

Here is today’s edition of the casting couch. Keith David joins the cast of Cloud Atlas, Rachel Nichols cast in A Bird of the Air, Isla Fisher will be in Now You See Me, and Will Forte in Neighborhood Watch.
Earlier today we unveiled four photos of Halle Berry and Hugo Weaving on the set of Tom Tykwer and Wachowski’s Cloud Atlas. But it appears that we neglected to include that Keith David joined the cast of the film. Coming your way in limited release on September 23rd, A Bird of the Air is a quirky, indie number that looks as charming as anything to come along in a while. Centered around a loner who finds a parrot, and embarks on a mission to return the bird to its rightful owner, it's a kind of quest film that spins out of control.
If the trailer is any real indication, my money is on this one coming together into a very solid effort, and one that I think many will find themselves watching again and again.

If the trailer is any real indication, my money is on this one coming together into a very solid effort, and one that I think many will find themselves watching again and again.

It might feel unfortunately familiar to anyone who's consumed lots of independent dramatic comedies, but A Bird of the Air looks to be a charming little film about a boy and a girl...and a parrot. The parrot adds that "quirky" factor that people are increasingly annoyed as being associated with independent comedies, but at least it's actually the driving point behind the plot in this case, and not just an unnecessary flourish. A Bird of the Air lands in theaters (I'm sorry) on September 23rd and is the directorial debut of actress Margaret Whitton (Major League, Little Monsters) starring Rachel Nichols (P2, Criminal Minds) and Jackson Hurst (The Tree of Life, Drop Dead Diva). The trailer showcases the film's very offbeat personality, and I'm not really sure if I buy the performances of the leads yet - but I'll just have to wait and see how it plays out in context.

Lights. Cameras. Birthday Action (for this, the 30th of November). Only one month left to go and it's 2010. How crazy is that?
Ridley, Terrence (in the 70s) and Marc
1835 Mark Twain's books have been adapted into movies ever since the movies began. Most notably The Prince and the Pauper and any tale of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer
1920 Virginia Mayo 40s and 50s star, frequent Danny Kaye foil
1926 Richard Crenna, character actor
1927 Robert Guillaume, "Benson"
1929 Dick Clark, seemingly immortal creature who may finally be destroyed by the rise of his spiritual offspring Ryan Seacrest. It's all very Cronos vs. Zeus, only without the thunderbolts
1937 Ridley Scott, manly director whose movies are usually way better when they're shot through with a strong female presence. Consider the three classics: Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Alien. The rest of the filmography surely has its moments but that's the trinity right there.

When the team.s new owner wants to move to warmer climates and hires a bunch of misfits to drive ticket sales down, she never imagines that they.ll pull it together and make the playoffs. That.s just what happens in this 1989 baseball comedy. Play ball! Former Las Vegas showgirl Rachel Phelps (Margaret Whitton) has inherited the Cleveland Indians baseball team from her late husband. She.s not happy with the wintry climate of Cleveland and wants to move the team to the warmer Florida. To do so she has to reduce the stadium attendance to void the team.s contract. So she instructs the new general manager Charlie Donovan (Charles Cyphers) to hire the worst team imaginable from a...

Good baseball movies are hard to come by. You have Bull Durham, but even that’s a romantic comedy with baseball as an afterthought. The so-called classics are all great: For the Love of the Game, The Natural, A League of Their Own, etc. A few exist, but for the sheer volume of films made about our national pastime, you’d think we’d have gotten the “baseball movie” down to an art. Producing one Field of Dreams every 500 baseball movies isn’t a great ratio. Major League falls somewhere in that other 500; it’s neither a superb baseball movie nor a superb comedy. It simmers somewhere just below boiling and a notch above lukewarm.
It’s the premise which makes Major League such a catch. It’s the reverse of most sports films and yet it keeps to formula at the same time. The aberration from formula is the...

Chicago – Paramount Home Video is unleashing waves of catalog titles this month, starting with an interesting quintet of laugh-fests that range wildly in subject matter and quality.
What do they have in common? Well, three are from the “Saturday Night Live” factory - “Wayne’s World,” “Wayne’s World 2,” and “Black Sheep,” but the other two are not. Those three are also from the ’90s, another tempting way to bunch these random titles together, but “Major League” is an ’80s comedy and “Without a Paddle” is from the ’00s.
Even quality levels seem like an inappropriate way to lump these titles together as even diehard fans couldn’t claim that Chris Farley’s “Black Sheep” or the silly “Paddle” should stand next to “Wayne’s World” or the beloved “Major League”.
Why even try and lump them together? They’re all comedies. They’re all Paramount. Anyone can find at...
