A Wheel of Fortune contestant quipped back and forth with Pat Sajak on Wednesday night (April 17) after making it to the Bonus Round and losing out on a massive $100,000. The contestant in question was Brooke Smith, a young woman from Atlanta, Georgia, who told Sajak she’s recorded and watched every episode of Wheel for the past three or four years. She also described herself as an “avid reader,” reading between 50 to 100 books a year. Smith proved to have more than just book smarts as she took on Adam Williams from McKinney, Texas, and Samantha Hanna from St. Louis, Missouri, even though things didn’t start off too hot. After the Mystery Round, Smith trailed her opponents with $3,000 compared to Hannah’s $3,100 and Williams’ $12,050. However, Smith clawed back into the game during the Express Round, where she bagged herself $9,100 and a trip to The Crane Resort in Barbados worth $12,190. Smith...

Jeff Goldblum, a gifted pianist in addition to his acting skills, showcases his talents on the 88 keys on his new rendition of the jazz classic “A Baptist Beat,” the latest single off the actor’s upcoming EP Plays Well With Others.
The EP focuses on standards Goldblum considers “the best songs ever written,” with the Hank Mobley gem “A Baptist Beat” among those six selections. On Goldblum’s rendition, he summons his inner Wynton Kelly — the pianist who played on the 1961 original — while accompanied by his longtime big band, The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra.

Nipples, sharks and police protests: Inside the madness and mishaps of the Super Bowl half-time show
In just 12 seconds of fast-cut posing, strafed with stadium lights, Rihanna got more pulses racing than a full three hours of American football. The teaser clip posted online from rehearsals for Ri-Ri’s forthcoming half-time show at the Super Bowl Lvii might not have revealed much about her plans, beyond the likelihood of her performing in an outfit from the limited-edition Game Day collection from her own Savage X Fenty fashion line. But for her fans, this was last-second-touchdown stuff: the 2023 Super Bowl will mark her first live performance since the Grammys in 2018 and, considering the half-time show’s claim on the title of biggest pop show on Earth, it’s expected to be a comeback drop-kicked clean out of the park.
After all, over the past 30 years the half-time show has become renowned as the year’s greatest miniature musical extravaganza, the 12-minute stadium show-cum-Olympic Opening Ceremony you can construct in just six minutes.

Don Williams, who partnered with Andy Williams and their brothers, Dick and Bob, in a singing foursome that performed on the radio, in the movies and with Bing Crosby and Kay Thompson, has died. He was 100.
Williams died Friday of natural causes at his home in Branson, Missouri, his wife, Jeanne, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Born on Oct. 9, 1922, Don was the second oldest of the Wall Lake, Iowa-bred quartet. He and his brothers would work mornings on their own live radio show in Des Moines, Iowa, and then head off to school.
Doris Day knew them since they were kids. “Often I would go over to their house, and we would sing together,” she recalled after Andy Williams’ death in September 2012. “They asked me to join their group, but my vocal coach thought I should be out on my own.”

It's the most wonderful time of the year, or so Andy Williams may have you believe. But while everyone was getting ready to spend time with their families, buying presents, and decking various halls with boughs of holly, film critics were scrambling to catch up with all the movies they simply didn't have the time to see yet. Despite the pandemic's impact, this year was full of incredible cinematic selections, and I do mean full! By the end of the year, you're kind of forced to cut your losses and just recognize that no one can see everything ... despite their best efforts.
So while I probably would have included movies like "The Fabelmans" if I'd had the opportunity to safely see them in theaters, what I have seen will certainly pass muster. This year was hard for everyone and brutally so for me personally. Shocking deaths in the family, physical and emotional trauma,...

The soundtrack to A Christmas Story Christmas manages to be both seasonally appropriate and fun, effectively bringing the charm of the original movie into the 1970s with its era-appropriate songs. Set in 1973, A Christmas Story Christmas catches up with a now-adult Ralphie Parker, who is under pressure to deliver the perfect holiday for his family after the tragic death of The Old Man. Though the movie is aided by its returning cast members, the songs of the 2022 A Christmas Story sequel help update the franchise while capturing the energy of what is so beloved about the 1983 original.
The follow-up, which was released on HBO Max, is able to seamlessly transition A Christmas Story into a new time period thanks to its music. Predictably, the soundtrack of A Christmas Story Christmas includes a plethora of Christmas carols, ranging from traditional tracks to familiar holiday songs by popular artists of the time like the Jackson 5.

Just like many aging Tinseltown thespians and institutions over the years, the Hollywood sign is about to get another new face.
Thanks to 400 gallons of paint, to be precise.
In anticipation of the hillside landmark’s 100th anniversary in 2023, an eight-week long refurbishment of the sign is set to start on September 19, the Hollywood Sign Trust and paint retailer Sherwin-Williams announced today.
“The sign is the pride of Los Angeles, and we are excited for fans all around the world to see this makeover for a very special 100th anniversary,” said Hollywood Sign Trust boss Jeff Zarrinnam on Thursday. “The opportunity to partner again with Sherwin-Williams on this extensive project will help continue the legacy of the sign, a symbol of a place where magic is possible and where dreams can come true,” he added of the near perfectly timed endeavor between the Emmys and the Oscars.

Rolling Stone‘s interview series King for a Day features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and singers who had the difficult job of fronting major rock bands after the departure of an iconic vocalist. Some of them stayed in their bands for years, while others lasted just a few months. In the end, however, they all found out that replacement singers can themselves be replaced. This edition features Dave Coutts from the Stone Temple Pilots spinoff group Talk Show.
On Sept. 2, 1997, a new alt-rock band named Talk Show released their debut album.

Kirk Douglas and Rock Hudson can’t quite bring this all-star western fully to life, even with Robert Aldrich at the helm and a storyline that toys with (then) lurid, adult subject matter. Screen-written by Dalton Trumbo and filmed in Mexico, it perhaps packs too much edgy psychodrama into a simple cowboys & six-guns saga. Dorothy Malone and Carol Lynley give fine support and the locations are nice, as is Ernest Laszlo’s cinematography.

John Wayne, Robert Ryan and some thrilling color combat footage grace this Howard Hughes WW2 aviation epic, that’s famous for being the odd-title-out in the filmography of Nicholas Ray. Just how did the politically diverging Ray and Hughes get along so well? The Wac’s sensational Technicolor restoration does the real combat footage a big favor: minus scratches and dirt, it looks better than ever.

John Wayne plays a German sea captain in a film that goes out of its way to create a favorable image of our former enemy, with hardly a Nazi flag or even a German accent in sight. Wayne and his co-star Lana Turner are as Teutonic as Blondie and Dagwood, yet the film works as a basic adventure – we like the charismatic star, and the sea chase format guarantees extra interest.

Sunday Telegraph editor Mick Carroll is proving himself immune to shame and is taking his Dance Of Down Under idea to a new extreme despite vicious scorn on YouTube and bewilderment here at Mumbrella.
Carroll has had his gossip columnists Jonathon Moran and Elle Halliwell perform the dance on its website with choreographer Adam Williams, who devised the effort which hits an impressive number of cultural cliches.
Dr Mumbo now learns that the pair has spent the past few days ringing around celebrity agents trying to get them to have their clients join them at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair for a mass filming with around 100 punters (although Dr Mumbo has no idea where they’re dragging them in from).
Sadly they’ve had many knock-backs (including Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa), but Dr Mumbo understands they’ve locked in former X Factor contestant Johnny Ruffo, plus veteran stagers Kerri-Anne Kennereley and Charlotte Dawson.

1. Burl Ives, "Silver Bells"
Here's the problem with Burl Ives' Christmas tunes: I just want him to interrupt every recording by announcing, "I am an Oscar Winner, kids. I'm not just your f*cking grandpa with the pointy beard. I beat Lee J. Cobb and Gig Young. Suck on that sugar cube, Blitzen." Indeed, Rudolph's narrator scored a Supporting Actor trophy for 1958's The Big Country, and he wasn't the jolliest bastard you've ever seen in it. But here's the thing: Christmas is about bubbling-under rage, which I've decided that Burl has, and therefore "Silver Bells" is a definitive yuletide anthem. Score: 8
2. The Carpenters, "Merry Christmas Darling"
All right. It doesn't take a looped screening of the Carpenters' Christmas specials featuring the McNichols, John Denver, and Yuletide Anorexia to realize that Christmas meant everything to the Carpenters. Karen and Richard were nothing without their plasticine grins, that true indicator of the holiday spirit.

We've been threatened with a Videodrome remake for the last couple years. Now, they're going to make one and shove it in your overly-marketed, under-employed little faces.
Some douche named Adam Berg is going to direct the remake, written by Ehren Kruger (he's responsible for the shitpile Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, among other travesties), and it will be a "large-scale sci-fi action thriller" because someone at Universal is very very stupid and rich.
Apparently, instead of melty videotapes and dial-turning TVs that eat you, the new one will be all about "nano-technology." The original was about the fusion of technology and torture, body horror and pleasure and their ties to new forms of entertainment. The new version? A "large-scale action sci-fi thriller" probably starring Kristen Stewart. Will Blu-Rays melt in their hands? Will giant HD TVs turn liquidy as perfectly coiffed Kate Beckinsale slinks out of the screen in a leather catsuit,...

"Entertainment Weekly" has posted two bloody photos from Kimberly Peirce's "Carrie." The film is inspired by Brian De Palma's 1976 movie, and is more faithful to the chilling Stephen King novel. Chloë Grace Moretz plays bullied high school student Carrie, who uses her telekinetic powers to retaliate against her nasty classmates. Julianne Moore is her mother, Margaret White — a religious woman whose sense of humanity and affection for her daughter turns vicious and violent. Moretz spoke to the magazine about the famous scene at the prom where a bucket of pig's blood is dumped on her head. "We only have, like, four chances to get it right, because that stuff stains your hair." Carrie unleashes mayhem in theaters on March 15.

I do not envy Adam Berg. Many first-time feature directors are cutting their teeth on found footage films or remakes these days, simply because that's so much of what is being produced. It's a tough spot to be in. On the one hand, you get a guaranteed greenlight, and you know the studio is going to promote the movie because it's an investment for them. These remakes are about extending the copyright on something. They're about keeping intellectual property in circulation. They are expensive marketing campaigns to sell the original in a super-deluxe home video edition. They are business, pure...

Whether you adore the works of horror auteur David Cronenberg or are utterly perplexed by them, you must admit he's a filmmaker who puts a very distinctive stamp on all he touches. So much so that it's difficult to imagine any of his films virtually any other way. But Universal feels confident that they can make a commercially successful revamp of Videodrome, his original sci-fi body-horror feature that is often counted as quintessential Cronenberg. Word of this remake first arose back in 2009, but since then it seemed to have sunk into the abyss of Hollywood development. Now, it's re-emerged with Deadline reporting that Universal has hired heralded commercial director Adam Berg to helm. The Videodrome remake will be his feature directorial debut. While a remake of this film will strike many as absurd, Berg does seem a good fit for the film's unsettling aesthetic. Evidence lies in this chilling ad...

Adam Berg has been hired to helm Videodrome. The commercials director will lead a big-screen remake of the David Cronenberg classic for Universal Pictures, reports Deadline. The original movie starred James Woods as the CEO of a small cable company who begins pirating a mysterious, snuff-like show called Videodrome. The bizarre show begins to affect him with strange visions and mutations. Announced as early as 2009, the remake is being scripted by (more)...

Acclaimed commercials director Adam Berg is in talks to make his feature directorial debut on a remake of David Cronenberg's 1983 body horror meets media satire classic "Videodrome" at Universal Pictures says Deadline.
James Woods starred in the original about a cable TV programmer who tried to make his station relevant by programming 'Videodrome', a reality TV series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers.
He soon uncovers a political conspiracy tied to a malicious broadcast signal within the show that causes disturbing hallucinations and brain tumours in an effort to ideologically "purge" North America.
The film recently made it onto the Sight and Sound Poll's Top 250 films of all time list and is famous for its catchphrase "Long Live the New Flesh".
Ehren Kruger is penning the remake and will produce with Daniel Bobker.

News and Notes Considering 300: Battle of Artemisia is a prequel to 300, it's not a complete surprise that Gerard Butler won't be reprising his role of King Leonidas. Producer Bernie Goldman says there was a part for him and Lena Heady in the script, if he wanted it. "It's a different story. There's a small part for Lena. There's a small part for Gerry." Butler told MTV that "it wasn't really my thing," though he wouldn't say what specifically he didn't like about the new movie. - David Cronenberg's Videodrome is the latest '80s film to get the remake treatment. Little by little Hollywood fat cats are killing off the good name horror established for itself in the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s. Nowadays big studios are putting their money into high profile remakes of genre classics as opposed to getting behind filmmakers who want to bring unique stories to the table. Videodrome, David Cronenberg‘s classic slice of techno-horror surrealism is the latest for the chop.
For those who haven’t seen the film, Videodrome tells the story of Max Renn, the head of a Canadian TV studio which programmes sleazy material. He eventually comes across Videodrome, a videotape that contains seemingly real scenes of people being tortured and killed. Believing this is the future he seeks to have it programmed on his station. However, the Videodrome has some form of spiritual power which begins to cause hallucinations and control Renn’s mind, leading to a series of truly bizarre...

David Cronenberg's Videodrome is a fascinating film and one I'm sure I'll go back to continuously to explore again and again, but where so many hold a special place for the film, I can't say I'm one of them. However, the idea of a studio remaking it doesn't exactly make much sense and the Ehren Kruger script Universal is reportedly handing over to first time feature director Adam Berg isn't exactly a new one. I first reported on Kruger's script back in 2009 when, at the time, I hadn't seen Videodrome. I've since seen it three times in the last three years, which is to say, yeah, it's one worth going back to, but hardly the first property you'd think of in terms of remakes. To begin, Videodrome found most of its followers after its 1983 theatrical release where it managed only $2.1 million. That's not a lot. Adjust that gross for...

David Cronenberg can't get financing from Focus Features to make a sequel to Eastern Promises, but big brother studio Universal is pressing ahead with a remake of Cronenberg's seminal body-horror movie Videodrome, scripted by Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) and directed by Adam Berg, who has made commercials. Here comes the new flesh, same as the old flesh.

The first rumblings of a planned remake of David Cronenberg's Videodrome began to circulate all the way back in 2009, rumblings that most people tended to brush off at the time because, hey! It's Videodrome! And Videodrome is clearly too weird for a major studio to take interest in, right? And for the next couple years there was silence on the matter, encouraging people to believe that their initial response was correct. Well, no more.Universal have attached commercial director Adam Berg to direct the remake from a script by Ehren Kruger, who is also on board as a producer. There is no word who will replace original star James Woods. This will be Berg's feature debut but he has been in high demand for quite some...

Commercial director Adam Berg is in talks to direct his first feature film, which happens to be an unnecessary remake of David Cronenberg's 1983 film Videodrome. I'm sorry, but no one can make this movie like Cronenberg did.
The original twisted film starred James Woods as the head of Civic TV Channel 83, and to make his station relevant he airs a series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers called Videodrome. Of course they are going to change it up a bit. Universal's plan is to "modernize the concept, infusing it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller."
Berg's name might sounds familiar to you as he was at one point attached to direct the the Deadpool movie for Fox. That movie doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.
What do you all think about Berg possibly directing the new this Videodrome remake?...

Because everything needs to be remade, Deadline is reporting this afternoon that Universal has secured its team for a remake of David Cronenberg's Videodrome.
The site says Adam Berg (a commercials director) is going to take the helm. But let's just jump right to what makes our stomach churn: The plan is "to modernize the concept, infusing it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller." Ehren Kruger scripted the redo and is producing with Daniel Bobker.

Given that it was just a couple of weeks ago that the $125 million remake of "Total Recall" opened to only a few million dollars more than what Paul Verhoeven's original made in 1990, one would have thought that studios might be shying away from the idea of redos, especially of auteur-driven sci-fi movies from the 1980s and 1990s. Have they actually learned anything? Don't be ridiculous. The next one to through the remake sausage grinder is, of all things, a new take on David Cronenberg's "Videodrome," a film recently named by critics as the 202nd best of all time in the Sight & Sound poll. Universal Pictures have had the reworking in the pipeline since 2009, hiring 'Transformers 3 & 4' writer Ehren Kruger to pen a script, but unfortunately, they seem to be serious about the whole thing, as Deadline have revealed that the company has hired Swedish commercials and music video...

Universal remains intent on developing a remake of David Cronenberg's Videodrome, a project first rumored in 2009 but dismissed as hallucinatory visions that eventually caused a tumor. But like the TV series at the center of Cronenberg's dystopian film, the demand for programming that titillates without bothering to create new plots or characters has pushed the studio to keep at the script by Transformers: Dark Of The Moon screenwriter Ehren Kruger, with Universal now bringing in commercials director Adam Berg for the thematically appropriate extra sheen of empty artifice. As before, the plan is still to "modernize" Videodrome ...

Universal is moving forward with a remake of David Cronenberg’s cult classic Videodrome and is in talks with a director to take on the project. Looking back at the last time we did a story about the Videodrome remake Universal has on its plate, it's hard to believe it was over three years ago! Yes, things move slowly in Hollywood, but that's about to change because a director has been chosen.

Long live the new flesh eh? Deadline report that celebrated commercials director Adam Berg is in talks to helm a remake of the 1983 David Cronenberg-directed sci-fi flick for Universal Pictures. Ehren Kruger scripted the remake and is producing with partner Daniel Bobker. The original movie was a dark, disturbing tale about the head of a tv channel (James Woods) who tries to make his station relevant by programming Videodrome, a series that depicts sadistic scenes of torture and murder to transfix viewers. It was directed by David Cronenberg - who stirred up a bit of controversy here on Cbm recently - and has, like much of the director's work, a strong cult following. So this news probably won't sit too well with many fans, especially because Deadline also report that the plan is to "modernize the concept, infusing it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into...

Apparently Universal has been developing a remake of David Cronenberg’s 1983 conspiracy thriller “Videodrome” for a while now, with “Transformers” writer Ehren Kruger adapting and producing. Well of course they are. These days, the surprise isn’t that a studio is remaking a cult favorite, it’s when they’re not. Obviously, as a result, I haven’t been surprised very often these days, which is a crying shame, but what’re you gonna do, right? Though Universal has been developing a remake of David Cronenberg’s Videodrome since at least 2009, things got a step closer to reality (which seems like an odd word to use in regards to the movie) today with ads director Adam Berg scoring the job of directing.Back when it was first announced, all we knew was that Arlington Road / Transformers: Dark Of The Moon writer Ehren Kruger had been engaged to craft the new script, which would apparently update the film’s original premise to include nano-technology.Cronenberg’s trippy, bloody 1983 original saw James Woods as a sleazy cable TV boss who discovers a weird show called Videodrome. The pulsating signal begins to inflict him with visions and genetic mutations.Naturally, there will be the school of thought that Videodrome doesn’t really need to be remade and/or that Cronenberg himself followed up on the idea with eXistenZ, but...

At Mumbrella360 Vice Australia presented Brand Rolled, a night of the best brand-funded content on the web from around the world. Vice Australia director Michael Slonim argues going from ads to content is a difficult yet rewarding change, and offers a selection of the night’s curation.
Brands today should be thinking and acting like media, creating content that’s entertaining as hell and pulls in audiences.
But where should we look to for inspiration when most television, like most advertising, is boring, derivative and easily ignored?

As Americans, we grow up with a few seemingly inborn values (similar to Robocop's directives) ... bigger is better, faster is better and if one is good, several is great (sometimes referred to as 'The More The Merrier' Philosophy). Well, some of our UK brethren have obviously gotten on board with these ideals and applied them to horror. The result? Slasher House...a film with one girl and four killers. I don't like her chances.
Starring Eleanor James as the unfortunate lead character, Red, Slasher House plants our heroine right in the middle of an abandoned mental asylum. (How do these things keep turning up abandoned? We've really got to do some research here and get some more competent people running these nut houses. Please get me Amadeus Arkham and Drs. Harleen Quinzel and Jonathan Crane to handle this). To make things worse, the place isn't completely abandoned. Stalking...

We got an awesome first look at Tom Hardy as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises last week, and while it will certainly be a long time before we see the first trailer from the anticipated blockbuster sequel, we have a trailer for a different form of Batman entertainment. Starting in the United Kingdom this summer, Batman Live, a worldwide touring arena show will kick off, and we have the cool trailer for the promising show here. It's very reminiscent of that short film Carousel from Adam Berg we highlighted awhile back when he was rumored to direct Deadpool, and while it's a short tease, this looks like it could be a pretty sweet show. Here's the trailer for Batman Live (thanks to Ain't It Cool News): Based on an original story being created exclusively for the show, Batman Live is a theatrical extravaganza of thrilling stunts, acrobatic acts and illusions.

A cautionary tale and here's why the offer story is dangerous (and not something we love, but something we recognize is part of the game these days). It's seems that after a year or so of rumour and conjecture, 20th Century Fox is finally gearing up to deliver a Deadpool spinoff movie, revisiting the character played by Ryan Reynolds in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The new comes courtesy of The La Times' 24 Frames, who claim that two separate sources have anonymously confirmed Miller (who has served in a creative capacity on two previous X-Men films and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) will be directing the film, which still has no solid start date.

Visual Effects artist Tim Miller is to make his directing debut with 20th Century Fox's Deadpool spin-off.
Rhett Reese, who penned the screenplay with his Zombieland co-writer Paul Wernick, confirmed the reports via Twitter, saying: "It is true, Tim Miller will be directing Deadpool. He's the man for the job!"
Miller has worked on visual effects for such comic book adaptations as Daredevil, the first two X-Men films and, most recently, Scott Pilgrim vs The World.
Robert Rodriguez and Adam Berg had previously been linked to helming the Deadpool project.
Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role as the title character, also known as Wade Wilson. The wisecracking, sword-wielding mercenary was introduced to cinema audiences in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, though dramatic changes in climactic scenes upset hardcore fans and Fox is now promising to make the antihero far closer to the source material.
