In Amazon’s A League of Their Own TV show, the experiences of women in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League are just half of the story.

A scene in Penny Marshall’s 1992 film of the same name inspires the other half of the series, which debuted Aug. 12 on Prime Video. In the sequence, Rockford Peaches catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) fields a painfully fast throw from an unnamed Black woman (DeLisa Chinn-Tyler), who comes down from the stands to return a foul ball. It’s one of the movie’s most memorable moments because of what it alludes to beyond its brief screen time: the history of Black women in baseball.

On the heels of its 30th anniversary, “A League of Their Own” from director Penny Marshall has been reimagined for television in the streaming age by Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”) and Will Graham (“Mozart In The Jungle”). Taking inspiration from the 1992 screenplay by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, who in turn based their screenplay on a story by Kelly Candaele and Kim Wilson, the new Amazon Prime Video show seeks to make explicit aspects of history that were merely implied in the original film.

The baseball series debuts on Prime Video in less than a month, and Tuesday’s trailer revealed the first in-depth look at the challenges the women on the show will face.

A League of Their own is getting the binge treatment at Prime Video.

The streamer unveiled the first-look teaser for the highly anticipated series on Tuesday morning, and announced that the series will premiere all eight episodes exclusively on Prime Video on Friday, August 12.

It will launch in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Production has begun in Tasmania, Australia on “Deadloch,” a noir comedy that will be an Amazon original series.

The story is set in the once sleepy seaside hamlet of Deadloch and begins after a man’s dead body is found on the beach. Two female detectives are thrown together to solve the case, one fastidious, the other a more rough and ready type from out of town. Along with an over-eager junior they have to pool forces to solve the case while the town is putting on its annual crafts, culture and cooking festival.

The eight-part show was conceived by comedy duo Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan and will star Kate Box, Madeleine Sami “The Breaker Upperers”), Alicia Gardiner (“Wakefield”) and Nina Oyama (“Utopia”), as well as an ensemble cast.

“Deadloch” is to be directed between February and May by acclaimed Australian directors Ben Chessell, Gracie Otto and Beck Cole.

The Jazz Foundation of America will be presenting an online video concert, #TheNewGig, on May 14th to support artists through its Covid-19 Musicians’ Emergency Fund.

While Foxtel’s Lambs of God may well represent the pinnacle of Sarah Lambert’s 20-year career, the screenwriter/producer’s workload and reputation are set to reach new heights over the next two years.

The prolific Lambert is juggling four high-profile international TV series and two other projects. If they all get up, she may well have to clone herself.

First off, she has written the pilot of Traces, an 8-part drama based on a true crime case in Italy that has been transplanted to Australia. An examination of a miscarriage of justice, it’s being developed as a co-production between RevLover Films’ Martha Coleman and Lauren Edwards and Porchlight Films’ Vincent Sheehan and Liz Watts.

Currently she is tackling the pilot for The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart (working title) for Made Up Stories’ Bruna Papandrea, Jodi Matterson and Steve Hutensky.

Peter Frampton will release a new covers album, All Blues, on June 7th via UMe.
