Ryan Reynolds Shares Update on His John Candy Movie: 'He Was a Good Person When No One Was Watching'
Image
He might be best known for playing Wade Wilson/Deadpool in the Deadpoolfilm franchise, but since October 2022, Ryan Reynolds has been working on a documentary film on the life of the late actor-comedian John Candy. Reynolds is making the untitled doc with Colin Hanks under Reynolds’ Maximum Effort production company banner. Hanks' father, Tom Hanks, starred in 1984's Splash alongside Candy.

This week, per Deadline, Reynolds talked about the documentary in an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.“I get to meet heroes,” Reynolds told Colbert. “There was a group of eight to 10 people that were really generation-defining creators, and it’s wonderful to talk to storytellers about a beautiful man, who was a beautiful storyteller, who passed at 43, way too young,” he said.

Candy died in 1994 of a heart attack, but made his mark well before that in films like Spaceballs, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Uncle Buck, Home Alone,...

John Candy Remembered by 'Cool Runnings' Cast at '90s Con Reunion
Image
Fans of the 1993 cult classic Cool Runnings just received a burst of nostalgia as several cast members from the beloved John Candy film gathered for a heartwarming reunion. The movie, a fictionalized account of the Jamaican bobsled team’s unlikely journey to the 1988 Winter Olympics, is one of the most-loved sports comedies of the 90s. Decades later, the stars who brought that underdog story to life reunited at 90s Con in Hartford, Ct, on Friday.

When Cool Runnings arrived in cinemas in 1993, it seemed like just another comedy about a group of people who would attempt a sporting achievement against all the odds. However, the story of four Jamaican athletes—Derice, Sanka, Yul, and Junior—who competed as a bobsled team in the Calgary Olympics with the help of unorthodox and disgraced coach Irving Blitzer, played by Candy, became an uplifting movie that has transcended generations.

The cast reunion, some...

'A Very Sweet Man': John Candy Remembered by Cool Runnings Co-Stars 32 Years Later
Image
The Cool Runnings cast recalled working with John Candy in the movie, 32 years after the premiere. They also explained how Candy's performance added heart to the dramedy.

The Cool Runnings cast was impressed by John Candy's humility behind the scenes. Speaking to People on the film's 32nd anniversary, co-stars Leon Robinson, Doug E. Doug, Rawle D. Lewis, and Malik Yoba remembered Candy and his approach to the film. Yoba said Cool Runnings was initially written as a drama, before Candy joined the project. The screenplay was then reworked as a comedy, but Candy saw things differently; it all worked out in the end. "It was a serious movie for him," he said. "He lives in comedy and for him, he got to play a very serious role. This movie originally was a very serious movie. They turned it into a comedy."

Cool Runnings is based on the true story of Jamaica's first national bobsleigh team,...

The 15 Best '90s Kids' Movies Ranked
Image
Did movies for kids peak in the 1990s? It's entirely possible. We arrived at this question after sifting through piles of our old VHS tapes to produce a list of the best '90s kids' movies, noting the amount of high-quality entertainment we had to choose from. Make no mistake, this was a hard list to assemble and required more than a few heartbreaking sacrifices. Even cherished Walt Disney productions like "Mulan" and "Tarzan" were left on the outside looking in, which speaks volumes about the last great decade. "Beethoven?" Nope. "Rookie of the Year?" Nadda. "Angels in the Outfield?" Non. The Lindsey Lohan "Parent Trap?" Nein.

Thankfully, the films that made the final cut are genuinely excellent. So, don't get too mad if your favorite children's flicks are nowhere to be found. Chances are, we love them too but had to make room for those that were marginally better.

One of the most underrated ‘90s action dramas, and most underrated performances from Hollywood icon Sylvester Stallone is now available to stream on Prime Video. From the director behind Logan and featuring an all-star cast that includes Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, and Robert Patrick alongside Stallone, 1997’s Cop Land deserves to be seen by a much wider audience.

'Horrible': Empire Co-Creator Says Working on the Fox Series Was His 'Worst Experience'
Image
The acclaimed music drama, Empire, continues to enjoy its increased status as a cult classic thanks, in part, to co-creator Lee Daniels. However, while Daniels built Empire into a beloved show, he was crumbling behind the scenes, recalling his "horrible" experience working on the Fox series.

Speaking with The Film Stage, Daniels revealed why he decided to join the TV industry following a successful film career and whether he enjoyed working on Empire. Following success in the film business, including as a producer on Monster's Ball and the director of fellow Academy Award-winning film, Precious, Daniels did Empire because he wanted to see what it was like to "answer to suits" from a TV network. I dont like staying in the same lane just as a creative. When I got into television, I really just wanted to be able to answer to suits, Daniels said I wanted to know what that experience was like.

Everything To Know About Dick Wolf's New York Undercover Show
Image
New York Undercover was a groundbreaking police procedural in the 1990s that tackled sensitive topics and provided an authentic portrayal of diverse communities in New York City. The show resonated with Black audiences by offering authentic representation, complex lead characters, and addressing issues like racial profiling and police brutality. New York Undercover was different from other cop shows of its time due to its emphasis on personal lives, cultural authenticity, and the inclusion of hip-hop and R&b music. However, it was canceled due to low viewership and a drop in quality. A reboot is still uncertain but could be successful in today's era of diverse representation.

Dick Wolf is a name synonymous with groundbreaking crime procedural dramas, but one of his greatest projects, New York Undercover, has almost disappeared into obscurity. Wolf's formula of blending gritty realism with complex character development has led to a string of successful shows,...

The ‘90s Cop Show That Made Police Procedurals Cool
Image
Police procedurals have become a cool staple on television, but it wasn't always the case. New York Undercover, which graced the screens on Fox between '94 and '99, pioneered the stylish police procedurals as we know them now. Following two young undercover detectives, J.C. Williams (Malik Yoba), and Eddie Torres (Michael DeLorenzo), New York Undercover was like a pitch to you to become a cop. With a diverse cast ensemble and even more realistic storylines, the show was more relatable to a much wider audience. Coming on the heels of the Cold War when spying had ruled the world and shaped film and TV, the show reminded us of the ingenuity of undercover operatives. New York Undercover was also not afraid to tackle issues such as parenting, identity, racism, sexism, and drug abuse, which made the show more than just a police procedural but a social commentary too. Its refreshing...

Cool Runnings Star Reveals Heartbreaking Comment Made on Set by John Candy
Image
Fans of John Candy will fondly remember his performance in 1993's Cool Runnings, not realizing how much the beloved actor was struggling internally behind the scenes.

In honor of the film's 30th anniversary, director Jon Turteltaub joined the cast in sharing their memories of the classic film. That included stories about Candy, who died of a heart attack at age 43 just five months after the release of Cool Runnings. Looking back, Turteltaub noted of the late funnyman, "It’s a bit clichéd that the funny guy might not be the happy guy, but there’s a little truth to that. John was a fun, happy person, but if you got really deep, there was a lot of sadness and anger under there.”

Cool Runnings director Jon Turteltaub and the cast open up about the controversy surrounding Jamaican accents in the film. Turteltaub had battles with Disney boss Jeffrey Katzenberg over the characters' accents. The cast agreed to make an Americanized version of the film to ensure understanding for a global audience, and Cool Runnings was criticized for perpetuating caricatures.

Cool Runnings director Jon Turteltaub and the cast open up about the controversy surrounding the characters’ Jamaican accents. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and released in 1993, Cool Runnings was based on the true story of the first Jamaican national bobsleigh team at the 1988 Winter Olympics. The cast and crew of Disney’s beloved sports comedy, “Cool Runnings”, are opening up about the troubles they ran into with Disney upon making the 1993 film.

During a recent reunion, in honour of the film’s 30th anniversary this month, director Jon Turteltaub and the cast recalled battling with the media giant over the film’s Jamaican accents.

“Cool Runnings” — roughly based on the debut of the Jamaican national bobsleigh team at the 1988 Winter Olympics — initially got its start apart from Disney with a script that featured a lot of “drugs, racism and the characters were getting laid a lot,” actor Rawle D. Cool Runnings director fought with Disney over the Jamaican accents
Image
One of Disney’s most beloved sports movies is turning 30. 1993 saw the release of Cool Runnings, the movie that’s based on the story of the first Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. The film starred Leon, Doug E. Doug, Malik Yoba, Rawle D. Lewis and John Candy as their coach. The loosely adapted story was directed by Jon Turteltaub, who would also collaborate with Disney for the National Treasure franchise. Turteltaub and the cast recently unveiled some behind-the-scenes details of the movie in an interview with The Independent.

According to Variety, it was revealed that Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was the Chairman at Disney at the time, wanted the director to Americanize the Jamaican accents for a general audience. With Disney’s beloved sports comedy “Cool Runnings” celebrating its 30th anniversary this month, director Jon Turteltaub and the cast reunited for an interview with The Independent and revealed their battle against Disney over the film’s Jamaican accents. Cop Land's Casting Didn't Go The Way James Mangold Had Hoped
Image
One of the first things that come to mind about James Mangold's 1997 crime drama "Cop Land" is its stacked cast — and how some of them played against type. Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert De Niro were just the tip of the macho iceberg in a who's-who ensemble of stars and familiar character actors. There was also Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra, Noah Emmerich, and Malik Yoba -- the list goes on and on. Even smaller roles utilized notable Martin Scorsese alumni like Cathy Moriarty and Frank Vincent, and future "The Sopranos" stars Edie Falco and Tony Sirico (the latter of whom only appears in a surveillance photo). This was the movie that put "Rocky" and "Raging Bull" in the ring together and had Stallone gain 40 pounds to play a half-deaf sheriff in a New Jersey town populated by corrupt cops.

Yet for Mangold,...

Redmayne & Chastain in Official Trailer for 'The Good Nurse' Thriller
Image
"He's been killing people - without even touching them." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a mystery thriller titled The Good Nurse, from Danish filmmaker Tobias Lindholm. It's premiering at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival first this month, then will be streaming in October on Netflix. A gripping thriller based on true events (which is especially scary), The Good Nurse is directed by Academy Award nominee Tobias Lindholm (for Another Round), written by Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns, and stars Academy Award winners Jessica Chastain as Amy Loughren and Eddie Redmayne as Charles Cullen, as well as Nnamdi Asomugha, Noah Emmerich, Malik Yoba, Alix West Lefler, and Kim Dickens. What's going on? An infamous caregiver is implicated in the deaths of hundreds of hospital patients. What is the truth? What's really going on, why is he doing this? This looks especially eerie and unsettling, with such a dark performance by Redmayne.

The Good Nurse Trailer: Eddie Redmayne Might Be A Very Bad Nurse, Actually
Image
Netflix has a knack for getting a lot of very talented people together in movies that seemingly just wouldn't get made at a traditional studio anymore. Case in point, "The Good Nurse" is a movie that features two Oscar winners in the form of Jessica Chastain ("It Chapter Two") and Eddie Redmayne ("The Theory of Everything") front-and-center in a thriller that is based on true events.

As the title implies, they are nurses working at a hospital but, as it turns out, only one of them is good and the other might actually be very bad. For a movie with such a seemingly innocuous title, the body count certainly stacks up in a hurry here. Let's take a gander, shall we?

The Good Nurse Trailer Is Full Of Murder And Intrigue

Things don't take long to get a little twisted as Chastain's character Amy meets up with Redmayne's Charlie at a coffee shop.

180 not out! Great movies featuring unusual sports
Image
Films which centre around team sports have long been a staple of popular cinema. Often the sport in question is an integral part of the story being told, these films making good use of a sporting event as a way to actualise the drama. Escape to Victory is a strange and wonderful example of this, with its well known (and slightly ridiculous) football game which closes the film. Over the years we’ve seen films such as Raging Bull, The Color of Money and A League of Their Own all using the inherent passion and spectacle to their narrative advantage.

As can be seen in some of those examples already mentioned, real life has inspired many a sporting cinematic outing, with Fighting with My Family, the magnificent I, Tonya, Ron Howard’s Rush and Michael Mann’s Ali being fairly recent examples of this. We are fixated by the people behind the achievement,...
