Love stories can be found even in movies that are primarily about action. Martial arts movies might have offered audiences some of the most epic fights in cinema history, but they have also produced some of the greatest romance stories. The action genre often intertwines physical combat with emotional depth, with love and relationships playing a crucial role in the process. Interpersonal connections are more often than not the driving force behind the characters’ motivations, making them stand out as some of the key elements of the plot.
Romantic love, in particular, is a central emotional force in martial arts films, making the genre far more than just displays of impressive kick techniques you shouldn’t try at home. In these emotionally complex storylines that balance action and emotion, love is never just about passion — it is about the sacrifices and personal growth that come with it.

Hk cinema had a tendency to employ many people during a film production, but “The Swordsman” must be a unique case. King Hu, Ching Siu-Tung, Tsui Hark, Raymond Lee, Ann Hui and Andrew Kam are referred as directors and Wong Ying, Edward leung, Tai Foo-ho, Lam Kee-to, Lau Tai-muk and Kwan Man-leung as scriptwriters. Btw, this is not an omnibus, just a compact movie based on a novel by Louis Cha titled “The Smiling, Proud Wanderer”. Of course, there is a story here, since King Hu was originally credited as the director, but allegedly left the project midway, and the film was completed by a team led by producer Tsui Hark. Ann Hui was also part of the team, although uncredited, and since we tend to be completionists here at Amp, we decided to include “The Swordsman” in her project.

By the end of the first film, while carrying on his apprenticeship as an eunuch in the Palace, the quick-witted and cunning undercover agent for the Heaven and Earth Society, Wai Siu Bo (Stephen Chow) soon earned the trust of the Emperor, after foiling a couple of schemes by rivals who tried to overthrow the Qing Dynasty. Furthermore, the forever lusty Princess Jian Ning (Chingmy Yau) is more than keen to share her chamber with Wai, the “Duke of Deer Cauldron” the highest position which he finally achieved apart from fame and fortunes.

As modern action cinema becomes ever more beautified, it’s incredible to look back at who became stars and wonder if they would ever get the opportunity today. Sammo Hung is one in particular as he doesn’t “look” like a star but has the presence and talent that befits one of the legendary figures of the industry. If you wanted an example, just watch this feature as it remains one of the masterworks that probably doesn’t get as much recognition as it deserves.

Considering that it took up to five directors to finish filming the first “Swordsman” after King Hu left the project, it was indeed a miracle that it turned out to be a success and a trend setter for the many new wave wuxia movies to follow. This visually arresting sequel, again produced by Tsui Hark but now directed by Ching Siu Tung, it’s a different beast all together. However, the theme of swordsmen retiring from the jianghu (martial world) and live a peaceful life is still the main focus. The film went on to win William Cheung Suk Ping and Yu Ka On the Best Costume and Makeup Design award at the 12th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1993.

Good morning!
The movie Spring Breakers finally has a trailer and it appears the girls of the film are all pretty, uh, close.
The New York Times reviewed their experience at The Dalloway and here's their description of the clientele on Singles Night.
On a recent Thursday, the bar was packed with (mostly) women who were extremely on-trend: lots of vintage Madonna looks and an abundance of Working Girl glasses. There were also some sharply dressed “lesbros” (a k a gay men who hang with their lady-friends) congregating in a darker corner by the bar. A few straight voyeurs were on hand, somewhat obvious in their corporate attire.
I wonder if the writer was including himself in the latter category.
Anna Silk said she is recognized all over the world for her role in Lost Girl. Duh, she's an international babe!
