John Stevenson and Mike Osborne's 2008 film "Kung Fu Panda," on its most basic level, serves as a spoof of a certain type of martial arts film made in Hong Kong in the 1970s. Many of the tropes of martial arts cinema infiltrated American cinemas in the 1990s and 2000s thanks to the stateside releases of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong movies, the success of the wuxia film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and the constant bolstering of the genre by mega-fan Quentin Tarantino.
By 2008, so many American filmmakers had borrowed from Hong King cinema (including Tarantino himself with his "Kill Bill" movies), that even small children could recreate their tropes and clichés on the playground. Every kid could spot the characters: ancient wizened masters, a team of martial arts monks, and a feisty young comedic hotshot who seems ill-equipped for the asceticism of kung fu, but ultimately proves to be a champion.

Kung Fu Panda 4‘s limited premiere took place at The Grove in Los Angeles on March 3, where the cast and crew of the film made an appearance to promote the film. The two directors of the film, Mike Mitchell and Stephanie Ma-Stine, exuded confidence in their new film. Ma-Stine even went on to suggest that Po’s story will not end with the fourth film, hinting at the possibility of Kung Fu Panda 5. Fans have one valid condition before they root for the fifth film in the franchise.
Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)
Some fans on social media were highly skeptical about the idea of a fifth film. But many were willing to watch more Kung Fu Panda projects as long as the franchise kept the quality of the previous films and cared for the characters.

In the beginning, there was "Toy Story." Pixar's first feature film set the standard for CG animated movies in 1995, and each successive film built upon that framework, whether made by Pixar, DreamWorks, or any number of their competitors. The tools and pipelines used to make these movies became holy writs, and breaking from them was unthinkable. Yet there were those who challenged the status quo. 2008's "Kung Fu Panda" featured an introductory sequence in 2D, directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson. The staff of 2015's "The Peanuts Movie" worked hard to translate the charms of the original comic strip into beautifully textured CG. But "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" was more than just a challenger. Its release in 2018 was the animation equivalent of Martin Luther hammering his 95 Theses onto Pixar's door. There was no going back.
"The Mitchells vs the Machines" was tasked with following up on the most important animated film in recent memory.

During Guillermo del Toro’s time as an animation producer at DreamWorks, he earned a certain reputation around the studio. “Jeffrey Katzenberg called me ‘The Harbinger of Death’ because a lot of my solutions to a character conflict was to kill them.” del Toro recalled, with a laugh, during a recent interview with IndieWire. It was the early 2010s, when DreamWorks movies were starting to become darker and more daring, and del Toro wanted to push directors to try riskier, wilder things. “When I consulted on ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ they were debating what to do with the father character,” del Toro explained. “I said, ‘Kill him. That will give the entire movie a lot more gravitas.’” Likewise, “Puss in Boots” offed its villain, one of the heroes died halfway through “Rise of the Guardians”, and “Kung Fu Panda” included a panda massacre as a plot line.

The hardest part of putting together each season of “Love, Death + Robots” for series creator Tim Miller is deciding which stories will be showcased. “It’s not because it’s hard to find good ones, but because there’s so many good ones. It’s really hard to choose which ones are actually gonna go in the show,” he tells Gold Derby, along with supervising director Jennifer Yuh Nelson, during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). Nelson adds that the amount of stories to tell is matched by the amount of talent they have looking to work on one of the projects. “You have amazing directors in studio and there just aren’t enough stories or slots for everybody. That’s the hard part because you just want everybody to be able to do something.”

Actress Marlee Matlin, director Jason Reitman and producer Jason Blum are among the 12 film professionals who have been elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors for the first time, the Academy announced on Wednesday.
Where Academy elections have typically found incumbents winning in nearly all branches, this year’s was a step in a dramatic remaking of the board that will take place over a few years.
While all four of the incumbents who ran for re-election did win, stricter terms limits meant that existing governors could not run again in 11 of the 17 races, and the incumbents chose not to run in an additional two races.
The change was set in motion by new, stricter limits on that were put in place in 2020. Previously, they had to leave the board after serving three consecutive three-year terms, but could return after spending a year away.

Fresh off the first-ever Netflix is a Joke comedy festival, the streamer confirmed which performances will be available to view in the coming weeks, including tributes to late comedians such as Bob Saget and Robin Williams and the yet-to-be-announced date for Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias’s groundbreaking set at Dodger Stadium.
Featuring a wide range of events and stars, the festival also made headlines for some of its comedians’ jokes, such as Pete Davidson’s digs at Kanye West. But the biggest news of the fest was when Dave Chappelle was tackled on stage during his set at the Hollywood Bowl, with the attacker being charged with four misdemeanor counts. For its part, Netflix responded by saying, “We care deeply about the safety of creators and we strongly defend the right of stand-up comedians to perform on stage without fear of violence.” Chappelle’s four sold-out shows are not included in...

Volume 3 of the series, from executive producers Tim Miller and David Fincher, will span nine episodes. Some uncover ancient evil, while others explore a comedic apocalypse. The show will tell fantasy, horror and sci-fi stories across its third run.
In his first work directing animation, Fincher helms the “Bad Travelling” episode. Even though “Mindhunter” Season 3 is still indefinitely on hold, David Fincher makes his return to Netflix episodic directing — and his first time directing an animated project.

Fincher, who has served as an executive producer since Season 1, directed Episode 2, titled “Bad Travelling,” about a shark-hunting ship attacked by a giant crustacean.
“Mutiny, betrayal, and ventriloquism with a corpse… Welcome aboard the animation directing debut of David Fincher,” the official episode synopsis reads. Based on a short story by Neal Asher of the same name, the episode is penned by Andrew Kevin Walker with animation by Blur Studio.

On Tuesday, “The Power of the Dog” director Jane Campion made Oscar history as the first woman to receive two best director nominations.
Campion is nominated in the 2022 directing category opposite Steven Spielberg for “West Side Story,” Kenneth Branagh for “Belfast,” Paul Thomas Anderson for “Licorice Pizza” and Ryusuke Hamaguchi for “Drive My Car.” Her first Oscar nod for directing came in 1994 when she was nominated for “The Piano” at the 66th Academy Awards. She won the Oscar for original screenplay that year.
“It’s both sad but it’s also great that women are punching that glass ceiling out of the way. I really feel things are changing,” Campion told Variety of her directing nomination.
Exactly how much things are changing behind the camera with regard to gender and racial equity has been analyzed by Dr. Stacy Smith and the team at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative as they release their annual study.

In Season 2 of Neflix’s “Love, Death & Robots,” the adult animated anthology from executive producers David Fincher and Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) continued its embrace of survival and immortality in strange dystopian environments. However, there were eight shorts instead of 18 and a greater emphasis on philosophizing, with some directors stepping out of their comfort zones.
Indeed, the sci-fi anthology, produced by Blur Studio for Netflix, so impressed the TV Academy that it was awarded four juried prizes on Wednesday: Robert Valley, production designer (“Ice”); Patricio Betteo, background artist (“Ice”); Dan Gill, stop-motion animator (“All Through the House”); and Laurent Nicholas, character designer (“Automated Customer Service”).
“We tried to elevate the stories further and to give deeper explorations of some of these adult themes,” said supervising director Jennifer Yuh Nelson (“The Darkest Minds” and the “Kung Fu Panda”sequels). “So it was very much like a curating process to go from...

On Tuesday afternoon, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival streamed a candid, hour-long conversation between four of the key minds behind Netflix’s second season of “Love, Death & Robots.” Creator and executive producer Tim Miller, executive producer David Fincher, supervising director Jennifer Yuh Nelson (“Kung Fu Panda” 2 and 3) and visual effects supervisor Jerome Denjean from Blur Studio engaged in an unmoderated conversation about the adult animation series, from its origins to its upcoming third season.
“The way I felt is that there was not a lot of adult animation in the west, and particularly not in America, and particularly not at the budget levels that allowed for really high-end CG like what was going on at Pixar and DreamWorks for kids,” Miller recalled. “And we felt it was time to do that for adults.”

“Love, Death & Robots” doesn’t make a terrible amount of sense as a title. For one thing, it’s repetitive: part of the inherent appeal of fictional robots is that they feast on our uncomfortable relationship with death. We’re usually either afraid of robots that could possibly kill us or attracted by the implication of a robot incapable of dying. And that’s all even before addressing the idea that love is an emotion tied to caring about someone so much that you’re afraid to live without them.
So where does that leave Netflix’s anthology collection of animated shorts, each ostensibly drawing on at least one of that trio? “Love, Death & Robots,” debuting an eight-episode Season 2 over two years after its first, continues to be a vague, mystifying catch-all. Heralded around its premiere as reflecting the sensibilities of its two high-profile executive producers — David Fincher...

William Morris Endeavor agent Tanya Cohen, known as a rising star and champion of female directors, is leaving the agency to pursue a management career.
Cohen recently made partner, and has a roster that includes helmers Gabriela Cowperthwaite (“Blackfish”), Jennifer Yuh Nelson, (“Kung Fu Panda 2”) and comedy veteran Paula Pell.
She is said to be in early negotiations with one of several new management firms to have sprung up in recent months as both a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the waning standoff between the Writers Guild of America and the talent agencies.
Variety has also learned that motion picture and literary packaging agents Solco Schuit and Simon Faber are departing as a team — considering options that include a management path or producer roles.
Solco worked on teams for the likes of “Freaky” and “Happy Death Day” director Christopher Landon, comedian and actor Jimmy O. Yang, and “Honey Boy” director Alma Har’el.
