Joshua Zeman’s latest feature documentary “Checkpoint Zoo,” an inspiring story that unfolds in a war-torn part of the world, has wrapped principal photography. The film tells the story of the daring rescue of over 5,000 animals that were trapped in a wildlife park behind enemy lines during the early days of the Russian-Ukrainian War.

“The team of scientists and filmmakers take the audience on a wild search for this mysterious creature,” said Andrew Karpen, CEO of Bleecker Street. “They follow in the steps of the great intrepid explorers searching for nature’s wonders, but also a greater understanding of man’s place in the world and what we must do to ensure its survival.”

Bleecker Street recently released the “The World to Come,” a historical romance with Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby, as well as the Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci drama “Supernova” and the Julia Garner drama “The Assistant.

The Lightbox-produced series bowed on U.S. cable net Fuse earlier this year. Netflix has will launch it globally, including the U.S., as an original on Dec. 28.

The series is set in Humboldt County, California, where marijuana is the dominant local industry, and dozens of people have gone missing in the last few years – more than any other county in California.

“Murder Mountain” focuses on the disappearance of 29-year-old Garret Rodriguez in 2013. The investigation into his whereabouts, the producers said, exposes “a wild, lawless place.” The series shows Humboldt’s marijuana farms, both legal and illegal, and the farmers and dealers associated with the industry.

On A&E’s The Killing Season tonight, the team investigate the Daytona Beach serial killer — and end up uncovering a horrific threat involving truck-stop prostitutes across the country. Documentarians Joshua Zeman and Rachel Mills are in Florida as they probe the unsolved Daytona Beach case, in which three prostitutes and a fourth woman were killed between December 2005 and December 2007. The remains of five young women were found in the marshes alongside Gilgo Beach, a remote spit of land on the south shore of Long Island, between December 2010 and March 2011. Parts of five more bodies were discovered in the same area the following month. Detectives theorized the murders were the work of a serial killer but turned up no suspects. The cases went cold and stayed cold. Police were accused of obfuscation and corruption, charges that would later prove true.

The fall festival rush is upon us. Locarno is currently ramping up. Venice has released their line-up and Thom Powers and the Toronto International Film Festival team have dropped a bomb with a previously unannounced new feature from powerhouse docu-provocateur Michael Moore. It is truly a miracle that the production of a film such as Moore’s upcoming Where To Invade Next (see still above) managed to go completely undetected by the filmmaking community until it was literally announced to world premiere at one of the largest film festivals in the world. It’s been a surprisingly interesting month of moving and shaking in terms of doc development. Just a month after making his first public funding pitch at Toronto’s Hot Docs Forum, legendary doc filmmaker Frederick Wiseman took to Kickstarter to help cover the remaining expenses for his 40th feature film In Jackson Heights (see the film’s first trailer below). Unrelentingly rigorous in his determination to capture the American institutional landscape on film, his latest continues down this thematic rabbit hole, taking on the immensely diverse New York City neighborhood of Jackson Heights as his latest subject. According to the Kickstarter page, Wiseman is currently editing the 120 hours of rushes he shot with hopes of having the film ready for a fall festival premiere (my guess would be Tiff, where both National Gallery and At Berkeley made their North American debut), though he’s currently quite a ways away from his $75,000 goal.

Well folks, after a rather long and brutal winter (at least for me here in Buffalo), we are finally heading into the wonderful warmth of summer, but with that blast of sunshine and steamy humidity comes the mid-year drought of major film fests. After the Sheffield Doc/Fest concludes on June 10th and AFI Docs wraps on June 21st, we likely won’t see any major influx in our charts until Locarno, Venice, Telluride and Tiff announce their line-ups in rapid succession. In the meantime, we can look forward to the intriguing onslaught of films making their debut in Sheffield, including Brian Hill’s intriguing examination of Sweden’s most notorious serial killer, The Confessions of Thomas Quick, and Sean McAllister’s film for which he himself was jailed in the process of making, A Syrian Love Story, the only two films world premiering in the festival’s main competition.

It must be nice to have celebrity friends. Wanna make a documentary about the loneliest whale on the planet? Just ask Leonardo DiCaprio to fund it! Okay, technically, Adrian Grenier didn't ask his environmentally conscious friend for the cash (but we'd like to think someone made a call). Grenier, along with director/producer Joshua Zeman, recently set up a Kickstarter to raise money for 52: The Search for the Loneliest Whale, a documentary about a rare whale that communicates at a 52-hertz frequency no other whale in the world can understand. As of March 11, the two were about $22,000 short of their $300,000 goal and deadline. But Leo to the rescue! He made a last-minute pledge of $50,000, via his foundation, to make the film happen. In 1989, the U.S. Navy discovered a mysterious 52 hertz frequency on a series of underwater microphones that been used to track enemy submarines ever since the cold war. After much debate, an elite bio-acoustian named William Watkins determined that this unique sound was coming from a solitary whale who had been calling out at a frequency that no other whale could understand. It is believed that this whale has never once received a response, making him The Loneliest Whale in the World.

Watkins would spend the next 12 years tracking the whale, whom he nicknamed “52” for his unique 52hz call until his death in 2004. That same year, The New York Times published an article about the whale prompting an intense response among the thousands of people who identified with this creature’s lonely plight. However with Waktins’ death, no one was left to track 52, leaving the loneliest whale friendless once again... that is until now.

52: The Search for the Loneliest Whale is a feature length documentary that follows the expedition to once again, find 52. Overcome by the enduring reaction to 52, now known through social circles as the lonely whale, director Joshua Zeman and producers Adrian Grenier and Lucy Cooper felt a moral calling to explore this fascinating mystery. Assembling a team of marine scientists to embark on a deep-sea expedition, they are choosing to unite the lonely whale’s prolific community through Kickstarter—the internet’s home for crowdfunding creative projects.

The film will explore how one incredible whale’s experience of profound solitude has made us all more connected to the ocean—and to each other.
