“Grey’s Anatomy” alum Sarah Drew recently opened up on the “Call It What It Is” podcast about her departure from ABC’s long-running medical drama series in 2018. Drew, who played Dr. April Kepner for nine seasons beginning in 2009, was let go from the show after its 14th season along with Jessica Capshaw, who portrayed Dr. Arizona Robbins.

“We were unceremoniously let go in a way that felt mean and unjust, and, because of that, the outpouring of love was so enormous it was like you were sitting there watching people [eulogize you],” Drew said on an episode of the “Call It What It Is” podcast, co-hosted by her former “Grey’s Anatomy” co-stars Capshaw and Camilla Luddington.

After news broke in 2018 about her “Grey’s Anatomy” exit, Drew posted a statement on X, telling fans, “I know you’re sad. I’m sad too. I haven’t really had the time to process this information.

During an appearance on the Call It What It Is podcast, co-hosted by Drew’s former co-stars Capshaw and Camilla Luddington, Drew explained how she felt about leaving the show.

I had low expectations for Monster Summer. Based on the trailer, it comes across as a Goosebumps and Stranger Things wannabe. The movie has a cast with a few notable names past their primes in such minor roles that you wonder who cashed in a favor or two.

Then there is Mel Gibson, the controversial Hollywood legend, who elevates this adventure horror film into something worth the price of admission. Gibson’s performance single-handedly elevates Monster Summer, which could have been a cheap knockoff, into something substantive.

Not to mention, this is a family “horror” film with a surprising amount of heart.

Yes, even though we’re a few weeks into Fall the box office is still ruled by kid-friendly flicks about CGI-animated robots (top two on the charts last weekend). And this new release hopes to follow, though it’s actually a “kid-flick” about a group of teens starring a pack of young thespians (and a couple of older vets too). Plus they’re embarking on an adventure just perfect for spooky October (and no they don’t have a big cowardly pooch). Now the Little Rascals (or Our gang) trekked through many haunted abodes, but that theme didn’t really invade features until the 1980s with The Goonies and those underdogs in The Monster Squad (a cult fave). In the last couple of years, the Ghostbusters have included several youngsters, but there are no “proto-packs” around for the minors trying to survive a Monster Summer.

A genial juvenile adventure that’s equal parts “The Hardy Boys” and “Goosebumps,” “Monster Summer” has Mason Thames (the principal child captive in “The Black Phone”) in considerably less-disturbing peril as a Martha’s Vineyard resident who comes to suspect witchery afoot. David Henrie’s slick exercise in lite supernatural suspense is aimed at younger viewers, though their parents may also be diverted by the cast’s elder members, including Mel Gibson, Lorraine Bracco and Kevin James. It’s a fun movie that lands on the right side of “innocuous,” being pleasantly formulaic rather than simply bland. Now, Blu-ray.com has unveiled that the physical media label Kino Lorber will be releasing Brick on 4K Blu-ray. This new remastering is scheduled to hit retailers on October 15.

About three years ago, we heard that Lethal Weapon franchise star (and potential Lethal Weapon 5 director) Mel Gibson had signed on to star in a fantasy adventure / family horror film that was going by the title Boys of Summer. That project has since been given a new title, Monster Summer, and it’s set to reach theatres on October 4th. The marketing has now officially begun, as a trailer for Monster Summer has made its way online, and you can check it out in the embed above! The 2024 film Boneyard drew inspiration from a haunting true crime case in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Between 2001 and 2005, eleven women and girls went missing in the area. Tragically, their remains were discovered four to eight years later, in 2009, buried in an arid stretch of desert known as the West Mesa. The victims, aged 15 to 32, had been sexually assaulted and brutally murdered. Though police questioned persons of interest, this heinous serial killer remained at large.

Directed by Asif Akbar, Boneyard tells a fictionalized story based on these unsolved West Mesa murders. It brought together anecdotally a cast led by Mel Gibson as an experienced FBI profiler named Pete and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as the local police chief. Gibson delivered a seasoned, gritty performance, but Jackson struggled more in his substantial role.

The movie followed police detectives and federal agents racing to identify the perpetrator before any other lives could be lost. Yet...

You might expect a film that begins with Mel Gibson announcing, “The Bible says we should rejoice in our suffering,” to be a little more high-minded than “Boneyard.” But this trashy trawl through a fictionalized version of the “West Mesa Murders” — a still-unsolved southwestern crime spree in our century’s early years — is the kind of dubiously moralizing exploitation exercise that makes “Sound of Freedom” look like a noble class act by comparison.

Likewise “inspired by true events,” Asif Akbar’s movie alternates between lurid serial-killer suspense not far removed from the retro grindhouse ogling of concurrent “MaXXXine” and a convoluted procedural involving variably corrupt, conflicting investigators. Four screenwriters are credited, to results that feel very much like four screenplays shuffled to comprise one awkward narrative deck of cards — from which marquee name Gibson has been largely dealt out. Here we go again. In recent years, Mel Gibson’s found himself stuck in a never-ending series of Dtv-style action thrillers, similar to the kind of fare Bruce Willis churned out before his retirement. Along with his contemporaries like John Travolta, John Cusack and many others, Gibson seems totally stuck in a rut, with virtually all of these films (most of which he only has minor roles in) going totally unnoticed. Has anyone seen Panama, Agent Game, On the Line, Confidential Informant, Desperation Road, Dangerous or Force of Nature? There have been some bright spots, such as the solid Bandit (a movie he was proud of when I interviewed him) or Fatman, but for the most part, Gibson’s career as an actor in mainstream movies seems limited to this kind of fare, which is a shame.

Nevertheless, he’s still out there cranking out VOD movies, with Boneyard being the latest.

Cliff (Scoot McNairy) is a struggling salesman, with employers closing doors on him like there’s no tomorrow. Through a chance encounter, he reconnects with old friend Ricky (Kit Harington), who now is a drugs runner across Montana. With Cliff in dire straits, the two agree to team up, prompting even more danger than they could ever have imagined.

Without even getting into its nuances — or at least, finer details — Blood For Dust can be best summed up as an inoffensive movie that we’ve definitely seen before. However, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Harking back to the black comedy vibe of Fargo, merely replacing the comedy element with the Midwestern gritty violence of Yellowstone, the movie well knows what it is. Most importantly, it knows where it is.

You can tell they shot Blood for Dust outside. People’s cold breath hangs in the wintry air, and it’s not the kind of wispy CGI breath that never seems to move quite right. Half-melted snow clings to the streets and straw-yellow Montana hills. The film’s title and poster would blend right into a direct-to-video lineup, but director Rod Blackhurst brings surprising texture and craft to bear on the otherwise familiar proceedings of this ’90s-set noir.

In a rare lead role, dependable and charismatic character actor Scoot McNairy plays Cliff, a traveling salesman whose tired eyes give away his success on the job. Maybe he was persuasive once, but he’s now tough to imagine peddling anything to anyone, much less the defibrillators that he crams into the back of his station wagon alongside the dummy he uses to demonstrate them. Chanel hosted the 16th annual Tribeca Festival Artists Dinner at Balthazar on Monday, honoring the artists who have contributed original artwork to the festival’s award-winning filmmakers.

Colin Bates, who produced the Halle Berry thriller Kidnap and the Arnold Schwarzenegger zombie drama Maggie, is producing the hot indie with Vincent McDaniel.

The Right Stuff‘s astronauts have been grounded by mission control: Disney+ has cancelled the space drama after just one season, according to our sister site Deadline. Producers Warner Bros. Television are reportedly shopping the series to other networks, though, with TNT and HBO Max said to be in the mix.

Exclusive: Disney+ has opted not to order a second season of space race series The Right Stuff. The Mercury 7 period drama, starring Patrick J. Adams and Jake McDorman, originated at National Geographic before launching as a Disney+ original last October. It is Disney+’s first scripted series cancellation.

Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind The Right Stuff, is shopping it to other outlets, with WarnerMedia siblings TNT and HBO Max considered logical potential targets. I hear the options on the cast expire tomorrow, and Wbtv has asked for a two-week extension while the efforts to find a new home continue.

There is a major incentive for Wbtv and parent WarnerMedia to try and keep The Right Stuff going — in November, the series, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, was given $13.7 million to move from Florida to California for Season 2, the fourth-highest relocating incentive ever awarded under the Cfc program.

What’s worse than wearing white to a wedding? Well, if you’re one of the Mercury 7 wives, wearing a bold floral print to a photoshoot where all the other women have agreed to dress plainly.

That’s what happens in Episode 3 of Disney+ series “The Right Stuff,” when Scott Carpenter’s wife, Rene Carpenter (played by Jade Albany Pietrantonio), shows up the other gals. Imagine the side-eye just before the flash.

But did it really happen? Yes, the platinum blonde Mrs. Carpenter arrived at the wives’ Mercury space capsule photoshoot wearing a sleeveless red floral dress, breaking the dress-code rules, as the other women were dressed in their assigned solid colors: pink, yellow, blue and white.

The communication disorder would stay with Annie her whole life, but at age 53, she was able to greatly improve her speech via a three-week treatment course at Hollins Communications Research Institute in Roanoke, Virginia. This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Saturday, July 25. The highlights are below.

The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.

In June, Comic-Con International — the non-profit organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event, WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. — announced it was moving forward with the virtual event on the same dates. This time, however, the event is free and open to all.

The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22, Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24 — is being announced daily through Sunday.

NatGeo’s upcoming historical drama “The Right Stuff” has been moved over to Disney+, where it will debut this fall.

An adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s iconic, bestselling book of the same name, the scripted series stars Jake McDorman as Alan Shepard, Patrick J. Adams as John Glenn and Colin O’Donoghue as Gordo Cooper. The book tells the true story of Nasa’s Project Mercury and the crew known as the Mercury 7.
