After playing Ducky Mallard for nearly two decades, David McCallum knew it was time for a change. The legendary NCIS medical examiner stepped back, saying his character was becoming a little redundant.

Ducky had already passed on the chief medical examiner role to Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) back in 2018, but McCallum wasn’t ready to totally disappear.

Thanks to NCIS: Origins, characters killed in the perilous conditions braved by NCIS agents and their families can now reemerge. A new spinoff from NCIS will rewind the clock, traveling back in time in the shared NCIS universe. NCIS: Origins will hone in on the backstory of the quintessential original McRt character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs. It will focus on the period after his stay in the military and before he becomes the Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Major Case Response Team.

It's redemptive that the new series is in a rare position to give the deceased characters new life experiences.

The dreamy-eyed boy that we see in Landscape with Invisible Hand is the character of Adam Campbell, played by Asante Blackk. His character has been portrayed as that of a rebellious artist who resents the rules set by the Vuvvs through his paintings in a non-aggressive way. The very first conflict with the Vuvvs is identified when he looks at the clear sky to find a subject to paint but is disappointed because the Vuvvs are parking their floating sphere over their house, blocking his view. The movie is based on a science fiction novel written by M.T. Anderson, bringing us to terms with a futuristic view of our world in 2036. Every now and then a film comes along that manages to reinvigorate a genre and causes filmmakers to reevaluate exactly what a film is supposed to pass along to an audience. With the new science fiction piece called Landscape with Invisible Hand, filmmaker Cory Finley has done just that – created a genre piece that transcends the genre to become great art.

Several years into the occupation of Earth by aliens called the Vuvv – which initially held the promise of prosperity for all and marvelous technological advances, that didn’t exactly pan out – humanity has grown complacent and, in many ways, stagnant. One thing the Vuvv are fascinated with is the human capacity to love and will pay interested humans to allow them to experience it via lives-tream broadcasts that are the main form of entertainment for the creatures.

These broadcasts can lead to steady incomes and better lives for the humans that mount successful ones.

You don’t see too many science fiction comedy-dramas heading into movie theaters these days – or any days, quite frankly – so that alone is cause to celebrate the arrival of “Landscape With Invisible Hand,” the odd title of an intriguing film that opens today (Friday) in limited release, starring a cast of mostly unknowns with the exception of Tiffany Haddish in a prime co-starring role. Tiffany Haddish (The Aftermath) agrees to marriage with an alien in the final trailer for Landscape with Invisible Hand. Based on M.T. Anderson’s satirical sci-fi novel, the strange story is set in a time in which aliens have taken over Earth without wiping out the human population.

In addition to Tiffany Haddish, the R-rated film stars Asante Blackk (This Is Us) and Kylie Rogers (Home Before Dark). Cory Finley, Spirit Awards Best First Screenplay nominee for Thoroughbreds, adapted Anderson’s novel and directed the sci-fi dramedy.

Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner produced, with Brad Pitt, Gabby Shepard, David Kern, M.T. Anderson, Megan Ellison, and Tiffany Haddish executive producing.

As depicted in a new trailer, the upcoming Tiffany Haddish-starring film Landscape with Invisible Hand imagines a world in which an alien species called the Vuvv has taken over Earth and humans are just trying to get by. For Haddish’s Beth Campbell, that apparently means agreeing to take on one of the extraterrestrials as her “pretend husband” so it can be “immersed in the human culture.”

Thankfully for Haddish, her new alien spouse isn’t equipped for sex with humans, but her children understandably aren’t very happy about the situation. Her son Adam (Asante Blackk) responds to a request for a hug with disdain, saying, “That thing is not my dad.” And when Haddish says she believes that the Vuvv “have hearts,” Adam retorts, “I literally think they don’t have circulatory systems. Love is a purely human emotion that can’t be faked — such is the theme at the center of the first trailer for Cory Finley’s “Landscape With Invisible Hands,” released Tuesday.

The film is based on the book by M.T. Anderson and, per the official synopsis, it takes place years into a benevolent occupation of Earth by an alien species. “When 17-year-old artist Adam Campbell (Asante Blackk) and new girlfriend Chloe Marsh (Kylie Rogers) discover the Vuvv are particularly fascinated with human love and will pay for access to it, they decide to livestream their budding romance to make extra cash for themselves and their families. Life is good, for a while, until the flame of their teenage love fizzles out and they’re forced to make very different, absurdly life-altering sacrifices for their families.”

The trailer looks like a quirky romantic comedy, albeit with an alien invasion in the middle of it.

Cory Finley’s extremely welcome mission to make every conceivable kind of high school movie — at a time when few other serious filmmakers are bothering to make any kind of high school movie — continues with the young director’s third feature and first misstep. Like “Thoroughbreds” and “Bad Education” before it, “Landscape with Invisible Hand” leverages the ecology of American teenagedom into a satirical and/or breathtakingly sad class comedy that explores the value of empathy in capitalism. Unlike either of those two films, it’s full of slimy little aliens who look like a frozen supermarket turkey made out of tongue.

They’re called the Vuvv, and by the time this story begins in 2036, these squat pink colonizers have been holding Earth’s economy hostage for more than five years.

Landscape with Invisible Hand is a unique story of survival under economic occupation of the Vuvv, an extraterrestrial race who aim to dominate humanity in every way except violence. Written and directed by Cory Finley, the innovative, poignant film explores how humanity might handle an Earth-altering alien occupation and the resulting clash between class and commerce.

The background of Gibbs and Ducky's long-standing friendship was explored on NCIS Season 18 Episode 2.

The murder case that brought them together in 1980 was neatly tied into a modern-day death.

Even better, the 40-year-old case was that old TV trope, "the one that got away," for Gibbs and Ducky.

Gibbs has always been "boss" to his younger agents, from Tony, Kate, and McGee in the beginning and to Torres and Bishop now.

But the friendship between Gibbs and Ducky has been a prominent part of the NCIS tapestry from the start.

Ducky has always been the one who has tempered Gibbs' impulses. And Gibbs is the one who punctures Ducky's scholarliness.

The flashbacks from 1980 proved that it's always been that way.

Young Marine Gibbs had made a hasty life choice, while young Ducky was running away from a sidetracked medical career.

CBS’ NCIS opens Season 18 — and inches closer to Episode 400 — this Tuesday at 8/7c, with a narrative twist that will transport us and Gibbs one year into the past.

In the season premiere, which pretty quickly flashes back to this time last year (and stays there), Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) and Fornell (returning guest star Joe Spano) attempt to track down the leader of a ring who supplied drugs to Fornell’s daughter, nearly killing her in the Season 16 finale. Meanwhile, the team back home deals with the case of a missing cadaver.

Great News got bad news from its network today. NBC has canceled the workplace/family comedy starring Briga Heelan and Andrea Martin after two seasons.

Created by 30 Rock alumna Tracey Wigfield and exec produced by 30 Rock creator Tina Fey, the series had a modestly rated run in midseason 2017. The comedy clinched a renewal, largely based on Fey’s clout at NBCUniversal, with help from largely positive reviews. With Fey stepping in for a guest arc to help jump-start the show, Great News was given a plum Season 2 slot behind Will & Grace on Thursday but did not show improvement and did not get a back order.

The comedy’s 13-episode sophomore run ended in January.

The comedy series is set in the world of television news, centering around an up-and-coming news producer, played by Briga Heelan, who finds herself dealing with a new intern — her mother, played by Andrea Martin. The series also starred Adam Campbell, Nicole Richie, Horatio Sanz, Tracey Wigfield, and John Michael Higgins. Executive producer Tina Fey also appeared in Season 2.

The show was renewed last year despite lackluster ratings for its first season. Season 1 averaged a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.4 million viewers in Live+Same Day, with Season 2 dropping to a 0.7 and 3 million.

This Thursday, the season 24 Dancing with the Stars champion will return to the TV screen for his guest-starring role as Nicole Richie‘s on-camera fiancé, suspended NFL player Carvell, on NBC’s Great News.

In a People exclusive sneak peek at the episode, Carvell makes a visit with Richie’s Portia Scott-Griffith to the Mmn newsroom, where he lifts Greg Walsh (Adam Campbell) 100 times in front of the onlooking staff.

“I’m sorry, who is this?” Katie Wendelson (Briga Heelan) inquires as she enters the office.

“My fiancé, Carvell,” explains Portia.

As a zany workplace comedy focused on the production of a live TV show, “Great News” has always been just a few degrees removed from “30 Rock.” Creator Tracy Wigfield came up the ranks through Tina Fey’s classic NBC sitcom, so it’s only fitting that her Fey-produced debut features a few similarities to a show Wigfield produced, wrote, and even cameo-d in. (She also co-stars in “Great News,” as Beth, the rather intense meteorologist).

After a critically approved but less-than-buzzy first season, Wigfield & Co. are leaning into the likeness: Tina Fey has joined the ensemble cast for seven episodes; series lead Katie Wendelson (Briga Heelan) is shifting into a mentor-mentee relationship with her new boss (played by Fey); the show is re-focusing on sharper topical storylines, and Chris Parnell, a “30 Rock” favorite as Dr. Leo Spaceman, even drops by for a guest spot in Episode 2.

Fey is an executive producer on the NBC comedy, and it was announced in May that she would have a guest arc in Season 2 for seven episodes. “She’s playing the new boss, Diana St. Tropez,” series creator Tracey Wigfield said at the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday. “She’s sort of Sheryl Sandberg on steroids” and is a woman who “knows exactly how to have it all.”

In the overcrowded TV landscape, it’s easy to fall behind on even favorite shows. This past spring has been particularly overcrowded with must-see series jockeying for awards attention.

But now that the official season has come to a close, that gives some breathing room to check out other series that premiered over the past season. For one reason or another, these shows may have been overlooked or maybe started off on the wrong foot and lost viewers’ attention. It happens.
