I love the exploitation output of the ‘70s. Those gritty pictures hold a special place in my heart, and I know I’m not alone in my appreciation. Plenty of movie lovers share a similar admiration for these edgy offerings. Perhaps it’s the way many of these efforts eschewed conventional hero and villain roles, blurring the lines between good and evil. Or, maybe it’s the over-the-top nature of these flicks.

No matter the reason, these films have a loyal cult following, with many contemporary filmmakers harkening back to exploitation fare with their output. Hell, Quentin Tarantino has made a successful career out of it. It’s great fun to see filmmakers meld modern cinematic techniques with the gritty and unflinching aesthetic that permeated these cult classics of yesteryear.

The 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, presented by Rogers, is scheduled to take place from September 4th through the 14th, and today the festival (known as TIFF) announced this year’s Centrepiece programme, their global showcase of compelling cinema from around the world. As a press release notes, “his year, there are 55 titles from filmmakers representing nearly fifty countries including Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chad, Colombia, Côte d’Ivoire, France, Germany, Iraq, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Poland, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, reflecting TIFF’s commitment to global cinema. The Toronto International Film Festival has selected 55 movies for its Centrepiece programme of the 50th fest, movies which are a “global showcase of compelling cinema from around the world” per this Am’s release. TIFF, presented by Rogers, runs from Sept. 4-14.

Titles from close to 50 countries including Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chad, Colombia, Côte d’Ivoire, France, Germany, Iraq, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Poland, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand are reflected in the curation.

Those filmmakers with works in this part of the lineup, and that also includes North American premieres, are Hubert Davis, Mathieu Denis, Hasan Hadi, Chie Hayakawa, Anders Thomas Jensen, Jan Komasa, Richard Linklater, Sergei Loznitsa, Pietro Marcello, Christian Petzold, Potsy Poncirol and Álvaro Olmos Torrico.

Centrepiece has 19 world premieres including:

Blood Lines, Gail Maurice’s sophomore feature, a pastoral drama of family and reconnection.

Carolina Caroline, directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier, an outlaw romance starring Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner.

Toronto International Film Festival announced the lineup for its Centerpiece program on Tuesday, spotlighting 55 total films from nearly 50 countries. “Blue Moon” from director Richard Linklater, a collaboration between the U.S. and Ireland, will have its North American premiere in the largely international section of the festival.

Of the 55 films screening in the Centerpiece program, 51 represent countries outside of the U.S. Some are collaborations with the U.S., while most are entirely international productions. Likewise, only six films are sole productions of Canada, with one co-production between Canada and Hungary.

18 of the films present in the section will have their world premieres at TIFF. These include “Good Boy,” starring Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough; Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner “Carolina Caroline,” from director Adam Carter Rehmeier, who previously made “Dinner in America” and “Snack Shack”; and “Wasteman,” the debut feature from Cal McMau starring David Jonsson from “Alien: Romulus” and “Industry.

Horror fans are smiling. This past week, Netflix added to its catalog a horror movie that was a standout in movie theaters, and subscribers had been dying to watch it or give it a second viewing. "Smallville" ran for 10 seasons, but its impact can't be measured only by how long it stayed on the air. The CW's Arrowverse doesn't exist without "Smallville." Now, "Arrow" did not share a continuity with "Smallville" and it recast its Oliver Queen. But still, even without "Arrow" being a proper "Smallville" spin-off, The CW greenlighting a Green Arrow show clearly happened because "Smallville" had introduced the character to their audience.

But there could've been a Green Arrow-led TV series much sooner, one starring Justin Hartley. During "Smallville" season 6, writer Steven DeKnight was working on a Justice League spin-off.

Beginning in season 4 of "Smallville," Clark Kent (Tom Welling) slowly begins meeting other DC superheroes. In "Run," it's Bart Allen/Impulse (Kyle Gallner). Season 5 had Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Alan Ritchson) in "Aqua" and then Victor Stone/Cyborg (Lee Thompson Young) in, well, "Cyborg." Then season 6 brought in Green Arrow (Hartley) as a recurring character.

Well, that was fast. A few days ago, Deadline reported a rumor that Strange Darling director Jt Mollner was potentially circling a new entry in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise alongside producer Roy Lee.

But on Saturday, Mollner took to X (formerly Twitter) to suggest that the rumor isn't true, saying, "Don't believe everything you read."

The initial Deadline report also suggested that Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell might be interested in reading a script for Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which would be great casting.

Starting in 1974 with Tobe Hooper's classic, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise has spanned nine movies, novels, video games, and plenty of merchandise. There’s just something about two horror icons working together that fills our hearts with glee. While their upcoming pairing may not be a guts-and-bloods-filled slasher (hopefully in the future!), we’re still stoked to see what Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) and Kyle Gallner (Strange Darling) have in store for us when Adam Carter Rehmeier’s (Dinner in America) feature, Carolina Caroline, eventually arrives in theaters. In the romantic crime drama, which also features performances from Kyra Sedgwick (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Jon Gries (The White Lotus), Gallner and Weaving star as a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde — bending all the rules and making the world their own while conning folks out of money along the way.

Sensitive viewers need trigger warnings before watching a movie. This is especially true when it comes to the hair-raising thrillers on this list. These films are tough watches due to their graphic scenes and intense subject matter. It takes some mental preparation to be able to handle them.

Most cinephiles know that Requiem for a Dream, Se7en, and The Silence of the Lambs are psychologically disturbing. However, there are many lesser-seen thrillers that may leave viewers scarred for life. Mentally prepare before watching these movies.

Last year, Stephen King was among the filmgoers who wound up impressed after watching the harrowing movie Strange Darling. Now, Paramount+ subscribers with the Showtime add-on have a chance to check out the film for themselves on streaming if they missed it in theaters.

As of March 1, Strange Darling is available for streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime. After a premiere at Fantastic Fest in 2023, the film had its wide release in the United States on Aug. 23, 2024. The film drew very high praise from critics, and it holds a score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even ahead of its release, King shared how he caught the movie early and thought it was a "really terrific" watch.

Magenta Light Studios has secured the U.S. distribution rights for “Deep Water,” a new thriller directed by Renny Harlin, known for his work on “The Strangers” trilogy. The film, starring Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley, comes from Arclight Films and is set for a theatrical release later this year.

Exclusive: Magenta Light Studios, the recently announced production and distribution company of Crash producer Bob Yari, has acquired domestic rights from Arclight Films to Deep Water, a new thriller directed by Renny Harlin (The Strangers trilogy), which stars Aaron Eckhart (Sully) and Ben Kingsley (Gandhi).

There’s no arguing that last year was incredibly wonderful for genre fans, and, at the top of that entertainment list, you’d find Finn’s follow-up feature. In the 2010s, the success of Arrow resulted in a Flash spinoff series and eventually the entire Arrowverse. Despite being its spiritual successor, Smallvillenever went down this path. However, it wasn't for a lack of trying, and as recently as two years ago, there was still interest in reviving the beloved Superman series.

Smallville was a smash hit that lasted 10 seasons, but none of its potential spinoffs even got a single season. Only one of the conceptualized spinoffs even had a pilot produced, even after the CW drama went out of its way to include multiple backdoor pilots. Every proposed spinoff would have starred at least one iconic DC hero, and with fans having only recently learned about some of them, it's possible there are still pitches that haven't been unveiled.

Demons have haunted humanity's tales since the dawn of time, with different parts of the world coming up with uniquely nightmarish monsters to be afraid of. Since the era of filmmaking, however, stories of demon possession have become a part of global pop culture. One of the most recent additions to this subgenre of horror movies is The Pope's Exorcist, available to stream on Netflix. Though a promising story based on a real exorcist, the movie failed to bring anything new to the genre.

However, there are some impactful horror movies with a demon as the villain. Some of these are icons of the genre, whereas others haven't received the credit they deserve. The majority of these demons have chilling physical forms, terrifying origin stories, and shocking abilities that make them the scariest demonic forces in horror. That said, even those invisible to the naked eye are capable of terrifying the bravest viewers.

She alibis for him, and they start an improbable relationship … navigating both their dysfunctional families and the discovery that Patty is a groupie of John Q. These two are about to make beautiful music together (literally).

With star Mason Gooding recently teasing Neve Campbell's return for Scream VII, the overarching continuity of the slasher movie universe is beginning to take shape. The popular horror franchise created by Wes Craven in 1996 remained confined to the California suburbs of Woodsboro during the first five installments before branching out to New York City in Scream VI, a reinvigorating departure expected to continue when Scream 7 is released in 2026.

In addition to the coastal change, series mainstay Neve Campbell was noticeably absent from Scream VI due to contract disagreements. Then, Melissa Barrera, was notoriously fired from the franchise following her pro-Palestinian support after Scream IV was released, prompting Campbell's return for Scream 7. Given all the moving parts, casting changes, new settings, and the like, it's worth delineating how Scream V and Scream VI relate to each other narratively and whether the former must be seen to comprehend the latter.

The original Smile became a sleeper hit for writer/director Parker Finn in 2022, so it’s no surprise that the film has generated a sequel just two years later, especially given its obvious franchise potential. It’s particularly gratifying to find Finn back in both the writer’s and the director’s chairs, because he’s surely one of the finest jump scare orchestrators in the business.

Smile 2 picks up six days after the events of the first movie, as desperate cop Joel (a briefly returning Kyle Gallner) tries and fails to get rid of the cursed entity that infects each host and makes them see grotesquely grinning figures, before eventually killing themselves, while also wearing a monstrous smile.

2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out, it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 18 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

The ending of Parker Finn's Smile 2 was a bit of a shock to the audiences who watched the movie and the audience in the actual film. The brutal ending seems to inevitably doom the future of the horror franchise. The ending sequence is bold and daring regarding where it takes the franchise, but Smile 2 and its predecessor subtly present a loophole that could potentially save the next installment from the movie's shocking ending.

Just as Smile did, Smile 2 reveals that a portion of the story took place inside the protagonist's fractured mind. This time around, it's pop star Skye Riley's (Naomi Scott) haunted mind. Nevertheless, only the last ten minutes of Smile take place inside Rose's (Sosie Bacon) mind, but it seems a sizable portion of Smile 2 takes place inside Skye's head.
