Richard Osman may be turning his hit novel The Thursday Murder Club into a Netflix feature, but it has not stopped him from roasting the streamer’s chief executive.
During a jolly curtain closer at the Rts London Convention, Osman and his The Rest Is Entertainment podcast co-host Marina Hyde, cast a satirical eye over the day’s speakers.
Osman poked fun at comments made by Ted Sarandos during his opening keynote, in which the Netflix co-ceo shared the secrets of streaming success to an audience of British television luminaries.
Sarandos added that “there’s no reason we couldn’t take 25%” audience share in the UK, which would more than double Netflix’s current viewership of 10%.
Lacing his comments with sarcasm, Osman joked: “We’ve all been in the business a long time and, by and large, we don’t really know what we’re doing. He knows how to...

Murder mystery adaptation The Thursday Murder Club has added yet more names to its cast, including the great Richard E Grant.
Whether The Thursday Murder Club turns out to be good, bad or indifferent, there’s no doubting the strength of its cast. Among the stars already announced, we can now add Withnail himself, Richard E Grant, and veteran British actor Paul Freeman, whose signature roles include Belloq in Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
The murder mystery adaptation’s other new additions, according to Deadline, are Tom Ellis, Geoff Bell, Sarah Niles and Ingrid Oliver – the latter perhaps best known as recurring character Petronella Osgood in Doctor Who. Oliver also happens to be the spouse of Richard Osman, the author of the original Murder Club novel.
Directed by Chris Columbus and produced by Amblin, The Thursday Murder Club sees a bunch of crime-solving retirement home residents investigate the suspicious death of a local property developer.

If you’re a screen actor right now, there are two murder-mystery ensembles you probably want to be a part of. On the one hand, you have Rian Johnson assembling a stellar cast for his next Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man. And then there’s the adaptation of Richard Osman’s hit novel The Thursday Murder Club, coming from writer-director Chris Columbus with the might of Amblin behind it – and boasting, as its central quartet, Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie. Now, that cast has expanded with multiple new additions, since the film is expected to begin shooting before the end of June.
Added to the cast now are the likes of Doctor Who legend David Tennant, The Rise Of Skywalker’s Naomi Ackie, and Rogue One’s Daniel Mays, plus Jonathan Pryce and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. The five additions have been confirmed by Netflix, though...

Back in 2020, it was announced that Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again director Ol Parker would be following that film up by taking the helm of The Thursday Murder Club, an adaptation of the debut novel by Richard Osman (creator and co-presenter of the BBC quiz show Pointless), for Amblin. Given that Parker’s involvement was announced just days before the pandemic lockdowns, it’s not surprising to hear that iteration of the project didn’t hold together… but The Thursday Murder Club is still moving forward. A couple months ago, word came out that Pierce Brosnan (GoldenEye), Helen Mirren (The Queen), and Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3) were being eyed for lead roles in the film, which is now coming our way from Home Alone and Harry Potter director Chris Columbus. Now Deadline confirms that Brosnan, Mirren, and Kingsley are on board to star in the film alongside Celia Imrie...

The adaptation of Richard Osman’s murder mystery novel The Thursday Murder Club has added David Tennant and other big names to its starry cast.
David Tennant is among the increasingly broad and distinctly British cast of The Thursday Murder Club, writer-director Chris Columbus’ adaptation of Richard Osman’s best-selling novel.
The mystery thriller, about the crime-solving residents at a posh retirement home, will have a core cast of Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie, as reported last month.
Surrounding them, though, is Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays and Henry-Lloyd Hughes – as well as the aforementioned former Doctor, David Tennant.
News of the casting has emerged via Deadline, which has also shared a quote from Osman, taken from The Rest Is Entertainment Podcast, in which he enthused that it’s “the greatest British cast assembled since the [Harry Potter] movies.”
Osman clearly hasn’t seen Sex Lives Of The Potato Men.

Michael Douglas has starred in some of the most iconic erotic thrillers ever made, from “Basic Instinct” to “Fatal Attraction,” so he knows a thing or two about crafting a memorable movie sex scene. In a new interview with The Telegraph, the actor gave his honest opinion about intimacy coordinators becoming the new normal in Hollywood when it comes to filming intimate moments on set.
“I’m past the age where I’ve got to worry about that. But it’s interesting with all the intimacy coordinators,” Douglas said when the topic of sex scenes came up during the interview. “It feels like executives taking control away from filmmakers — but there have been some terrible faux pas and harassment.”
“Sex scenes are like fight scenes, it’s all choreographed,” Douglas continued. “In my experience, you take responsibility as the man to make sure the woman is comfortable, you talk it through.

Michael Douglas appeared on “The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham” to talk about his new Apple TV+ series, “Franklin” – as well as Benjamin Franklin’s famous essay on flatulence (“Fart Proudly”). Check out his full interview during the weekday show on Radio Andy at 2pm Et and on the SiriusXM app with a subscription and free trial.
In the premiere of the biographical drama, Franklin, played by Douglas, passes gas. The 79-year-old Oscar winner told Jess and Julia that he had the founding father’s fart added to the script.
“That was my addition to the script,” Douglas said. “Because I had read this book – I mean, we did get a couple of criticisms on the show about, uh, they tried to show [Benjamin Franklin] farting. And I said, ‘Well, I’m sending these critics who brought this up this book on Franklin. This is ‘Fart Proudly,’ Ok? So you learn about this.

Daniel Mays remembers Michael Douglas and Timothy Van Patten, the respectively star and director of new Apple TV drama Franklin, bursting into song whenever he appeared on set.
It came about because during the Franklin shoot in Paris, director Nicholas Hytner asked Mays to star at London’s Bridge Theatre as good old reliable Nathan Detroit in an immersive production of the classic Broadway fable Guys & Dolls by Frank Loesser, Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling.
Upon hearing this news, Douglas insisted, ”You’re doing it, Danny — no question about it.”
The adaption of Damon Runyon’s tales was Van Patten’s father’s favorite musical, “so then within the hour, more like a whole bloody second, every time I came on set, they kept playing ‘The Oldest Established [Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York], and Michael and Noah Jupe would join in.”
Even the French crew got in the swing of it.

Plot: In December 1776, Benjamin Franklin is world famous for his electrical experiments. But his passion and power are put to the test when he embarks on a secret mission to France—with the fate of American independence hanging in the balance.
Review: Of all the television and big screen depictions of the Revolutionary War and the early days of the United States, few have focused specifically on Benjamin Franklin. The scientist, inventor, scholar, and dignitary has been a key character in many projects, notably played by Tom Wilkinson in HBO’s John Adams and by Howard De Silva in the musical 1776, but always as a supporting player. Despite being one of the Founding Fathers and having his iconic visage gracing the one hundred dollar bill, the first narrative production centered on his life is just now being released. When he arrived in France in 1776, Benjamin Franklin had a sort of global fame that’s hard to completely fathom, given a world of slow-traveling news in which “social media” took the form of arduously printed and even more arduously distributed pamphlets. He’d been a diplomat, journalist, publisher and prolific inventor, but he was more widely known for semi-apocryphal things like “inventing” electricity, as well as his mastery of glib wisdom we’d call “sound bites” today.
Franklin’s mission, undertaken with no official governmental mandate, was to enlist France’s support — money, supplies, ships and soldiers — in the burgeoning war for American independence. His celebrity, particularly its more frivolous aspects (matched with an international perception of frivolous “Americans”), was both a boon and a disservice to his cause. It’s as if we sent MrBeast to negotiate peace in the Middle East, if MrBeast suffered from gout and...

Benjamin Franklin’s diplomatic mission to France during the American Revolution is front and center in the Apple + TV series Franklin, and the series star and executive producer Michael Douglas hit the Croisette in Cannes to talk up the show ahead of its world premiere tonight at the Canneseries festival.
Douglas told a packed room of reporters at the Barriere Le Majestic hotel that Cannes was the natural choice to premiere the show that makes its global streaming premiere on Apple on Friday, April 12.
“This is where our project is based. The story is about Benjamin Franklin coming to France to save America,” said Douglas. “We spent 165 shooting days in Paris and around France in 2022, and not only is it based on Franklin coming here in 1776/7, but we filmed it all in France, and it’s the least we can do to come back here to premiere it.”
Douglas is Cannes regular.

It’s powdered wigs on parade in the new Franklin trailer, starring Michael Douglas as the calculating Newton of Electricity, Benjamin Franklin! As someone who performed miserably in history class throughout his schooling career, I was sure Apple’s upcoming limited series would not be to my liking. However, Michael Douglas transforms Benjamin Franklin into a charismatic, cryptic, and conniving figure. This portrayal is the jolt I needed to get interested in this fascinating television event.
Based upon A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America by Pulitzer Prize winner Stacy Schiff, the series will “explore the thrilling story of one of the greatest gambles of Benjamin Franklin’s career. At age 70, without any diplomatic training, Franklin convinced France – an absolute monarchy – to underwrite America’s experiment in democracy. By virtue of his fame, charisma, and ingenuity, Franklin outmaneuvered British spies, French informers, and hostile colleagues, all while...

On Wednesday, Apple TV+ revealed the trailer for “Franklin,” a limited series starring Oscar and Emmy winner Michael Douglas as Benjamin Franklin. The historical drama premieres on April 12.
The series is set at a pivotal moment in the founding father’s life. He’s in France in 1776, trying to secure the court of Louis XVI’s support for the revolution. There are untrustworthy people all around him, so it’s a dangerous diplomatic chess game he has to play. The series, which is based on historical biographer Stacy Schiff’s book “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America,” presents Franklin’s story as a kind of political thriller.
In addition to Douglas, who also executive produces, the cast includes Noah Jupe (“A Quiet Place”) as Temple Franklin, Benjamin’s teenage grandson who served as his secretary during the diplomatic mission; Thibault de Montalembert (“Call My Agent!”) as...
