You would think that if you gathered all of the most beloved, history-changing writers and cast members from five decades of “Saturday Night Live,” you would be left with the best episode of the show to ever air. And you would be wrong.

True to its history, the “SNL” 50th anniversary special was just like every other episode of the long-running NBC show — some highs, some lows, some unforgettable moments, some that are best forgotten.

The “SNL50” special served as a reminder of just how difficult it is to write a live comedy show no matter your age or net worth. But there were some gems that rose to the top. Out of NBC’s 3-hour special, here is the cream of the comedic crop.

“Saturday Night Live” alumni spanning across five decades of sketch comedy teamed up for “SNL50: The Anniversary Special.” The highly anticipated celebration of the series’ lasting achievement brought together a huge crew of comedy legends who got their start on the NBC staple, along with a crowd full of film, music, TV and sports stars alike.

“SNL” superstars Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy and Tina Fey, among others, all returned home to celebrate the show’s legacy for the three-hour anniversary special, which also featured cast members from the current season, original cast members from 1975, as well as fan-favorite “SNL” hosts and musical guests like Tom Hanks and Sabrina Carpenter.

Adam Sandler performed a song that paid tribute to Saturday Night Live’s 50 years on the air during Sunday night’s anniversary special, but not before he was introduced by retired Hollywood veteran Jack Nicholson.

Nicholson introduced the Grown Ups actor before he began his referential track, where he highlighted infamous SNL moments, pondered when Lorne Michaels will retire and quipped about “finding out your favorite musician is antisemitic.”

Sandler kicked off his performance saying, “everyone in this room has something in common,” pointing out that “all of our lives were changed by the show” before poking fun at some lighthearted moments. He questioned who would “take over the show when Lorne retires” in his lyrics before he appeared to joke that Speedy Rosenthal, a longtime member of SNL’s music department, would be the one to take over Michaels’ spot.

The SNL50: The Anniversary Special on Sunday brought back Kate McKinnon’s signature Colleen Rafferty alien abductee character in a special edition of the popular recurring sketch “Close Encounter” with a surprise appearance by Meryl Streep as her mom, Mrs. Rafferty. It marked the Oscar winner’s first time on the SNL stage.

In addition to McKinnon, also back was SNL alumna Aidy Bryant as one of two specialists interviewing a trio, including Rafferty, who all claimed that they had been abducted by aliens. This time, the other two were played by Pedro Pascal and Woody Harrelson, with Jon Hamm as a Space Force general conducting the interview alongside Bryant.

Rafferty acknowledged her repeat abductions, all of which somehow involved her only being dressed from the waste up. “Only other place I have been pant-less five times is Six Flags,” she deadpanned.

“SNL50” delivered another Kate McKinnon-led alien abduction sketch, with some especially big names making a surprise appearance, including Meryl Streep, who showed up as McKinnon’s similarly filthy-mouthed mother.

“We are eager to talk to you as you have all experienced a verified alien abduction,” a government official played by Aidy Bryant asked a disheveled McKinnon, Pedro Pascal and Woody Harrelson as they were joined by a fellow Pentagon employee, played by Jon Hamm. “Let’s start with how you were all brought aboard the spacecraft,” Hamm said.

“This beam of light appeared from the bottom of the ship, lifting me up like a soft hand,” Pascal said, with Harrelson adding, “we met these two beautiful, glowing aliens who took our hands and said, ‘welcome’ — I’ve never felt so safe.”

At the Pentagon, Miss Rafferty, along with Pascal’s and Harrelson’s characters all recount their abductions, trying to convince their military interrogators, played by Hamm and Bryant. Miss Rafferty goes into great detail about her “unkempt private area,” as she uses Pascal and Harrelson to demonstrate her abduction. At that point, Streep’s Miss Rafferty appears, apologizing for her lateness: “My No. 1 turned into a No. 3,” and “us Rafferty gals always attracted the freaks,” which indeed attracts Pascal’s mulleted dirtbag character.

The three-time Oscar winner made her first-ever appearance on Saturday Night Live during the 50th anniversary special on Sunday night. She popped up as Colleen Rafferty Sr., the mother of Kate McKinnon‘s iconic character who frequently gets abducted by aliens. Pedro Pascal and Woody Harrelson played their co-abductees, while Jon Hamm and Aidy Bryant interviewed them all as Pentagon officials.

“Us Rafferty gals, we always attracted the freaks,” Streep declared during SNL50. “For years I thought Colleen’s father was part alien, but it turns out he was just uncircumcised.”

The long-awaited cameo moment happened around the 30-minute mark of the three-hour extravaganza. Five-time host Emma Stone (who made waves on the red carpet with her popcorn ballgown) got interrupted by Sally as she was about to cut to a tribute of the show’s best physical comedy moments.

Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon kicked off Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special with a touching duet.

The Grammy winners introduced each other before they opened the NBC broadcast by performing Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound.” Simon pointed out that he performed the same track on SNL in 1976 with George Harrison, while Carpenter joked that neither she nor her parents were born at the time.

After they concluded their performance, Carpenter and Simon kicked off the special by reciting SNL‘s signature catchphrase, “Live From New York, it’s Saturday night,” despite the special airing on Sunday. From there, Steve Martin appeared to deliver the monologue.

Despite the late-night sketch comedy series’ five decades of groundbreaking male and female-led comedy, only six women have achieved this milestone.

What is the ‘SNL’ Five-Timers Club?

The SNL Five-Timers Club is an exclusive group of celebrities who have hosted the show at least five times. A 1990 sketch featuring Tom Hanks officially introduced the club. Subsequent sketches humorously portray the group as a secret society with a luxurious lounge, special robes, and elite membership.

Five-Timers always receive the club’s coveted jacket. Thus, when a host reaches their fifth hosting gig, past members often make surprise appearances to welcome them.

Cher performed “If I Could Turn Back Time” at SNL50: The Homecoming Concert with a costume harking back to her original music video wardrobe from the 1989 single.

The song was controversial at the time. The music video was shot on board the battleship USS Missouri and portrays Cher performing for the ship’s crew, wearing a leather thong while straddling a cannon. The song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It was written by Diane Warren, the songwriter behind 16 Oscar-nominated hits including “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith, “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion, and “The Journey” by H.E.R.

NBC’s months-long commemoration of the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live” is finally reaching its apex. The network welcomed hundreds of stars to Radio City Music Fall on Friday evening for “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert,” a kick-off for the weekend that will finish with the 50th anniversary special airing on NBC on, ironically, Sunday evening.

Among the celebrities spotted at Radio City Music Hall on Friday night, the invitees included Tom Hanks, Jason Momoa, Peyton Manning, Josh Gad, Ray Romano, Seth Rogen, Edward Norton, Judd Apatow, Jack McBrayer, Willie Geist, Al Roker, Phil Rosenthal, Savannah Guthrie, Jerry Seinfeld, Lester Holt, Keegan-Michael Key, Billy Crystal, Jim Gaffigan, Woody Harrelson, Natasha Lyonne, James Franco and Jon Hamm. “SNL” alum were in attendance too, including Adam Sandler, John Mulaney, Molly Shannon, Kevin Nealon, Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers and Punkie Johnson. “SNL” head Lorne Michaels could be seen rushing through the lobby before the show as well.

Disney pushed the opening of “Elio,” the studio’s upcoming Pixar film, by a week, while unveiling the release dates of Sam Raimi’s “Send Help” and James L. Brooks’ “Ella McCay.”

“Elio,” an animated science fiction adventure film, will debut on June 20. It was originally slated to open on June 13. That means it will no longer go head-to-head with Universal and DreamWorks’ live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon,” which could have cannibalized its core audience of kids and families. In its new date, it will face off against Sony’s “28 Years Later,” a zombie thriller that is pitched at older moviegoers.

Those are also the crowds that will be turning up for “Send Help” and “Ella McCay,” both of which will be released by 20th Century Studios. “Send Help,” a horror film with Rachel McAdams, Chris Pang, Dylan O’Brien, and Dennis Haysbert, will open on Jan.

Disney just shifted this summer’s Pixar movie Elio by one week from June 13 to June 20.

Typically, the June Pixar movies go out during Father’s Day weekend, but Disney is going a week later with this one.

Elio moves away from being head-to-head with Universal/DreamWorks’ live-action take of How to Train Your Dragon on June 13, and instead will go head-to-head with the adult skewing zombie title 28 Years Later on June 20.

In addition, the date shift for Elio creates space in Disney’s summer slate, giving Lilo & Stitch (5/23) more room to play, with the Pixar title still ahead of anticipated blockbuster The Fantastic Four: First Steps (7/25). Elio will be the only animated release in the wide gap between Looney Tunes (3/14) and Smurfs (7/18).

HBO’s True Detective has always been a fascinating beast, with equal parts brilliance and frustration. There has been a lot of great TV recently, but we’re still thinking about the finale of True Detective: Night Country from last year. Thankfully, the series was quickly renewed for another season, but we’re still facing a bit of a wait.

HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film Francesca Orsi has been chatting about HBO’s upcoming TV shows at the premiere of White Lotus season 3 and made mention of True Detective. The anthology series’ fifth season is set to go into production in a few months time, and Orsi said we can expect the new season in 2027, as reported by Deadline. Casting has not yet been announced, but Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all episodes of season 4 is on board.

Old friends are sometimes the best (and funniest) friends. At least it looked that way Wednesday night when Jimmy Fallon welcomed a trio of his Saturday Night Live peers to the Studio 6B set of The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in New York for some skits, laughs and shared memories.

The reunion was for good reason. The alums gathered just days ahead of the much anticipated SNL50: The Anniversary Special airing in primetime on NBC and Peacock on Sunday. And they showed off some of the skills they honed during their respective runs on the iconic sketch show by participating in a “Tonight Show Joke Off,” a riff on SNL’s “Weekend Update” segment during which they battled it out for the best punchlines.

Fey and Poehler, who have a Restless Leg tour scheduled for spring and summer, then stuck around to join Fallon in the chairs for a chat about the upcoming special.

Amelia Dimoldenberg, the creator and host of the viral chat show, has been booked to be the star correspondent for the SNL50: Red Carpet Livestream. It will air across all SNL social and digital platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok from 7-8 p.m. Et on Sunday, Feb. 16 ahead of the milestone SNL50: The Anniversary Special in primetime on NBC and Peacock.

The network will air the inaugural episode of SNL — then called NBC’s Saturday Night — at 11:30 p.m. Et/Pt Feb. 15, a night before the primetime 50th anniversary special. Additionally, NBC will rebroadcast the documentary Ladies and Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music in primetime on Feb. 15.

The first SNL, which aired on Oct. 11, 1975, was hosted by George Carlin and featured musical performances from Billy Preston and Janice Ian along with sketches by the show’s original cast: Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman and Gilda Radner.
