Is God Is has landed an early summer release date from Orion Pictures, a division of Amazon MGM Studios.
Playwright Aleshea Harris is directing the big screen adaptation of her acclaimed, award-winning stage play of the same name will open in cinemas May 15, 2026. That’s just around the time of the Cannes Film Festival, although there’s no word yet as to whether the movie will make an awards play, although Orion is known as a home for prestige fare.
Is God Is marks Harris’ feature directorial debut, and stars Kara Young (Virgo) and Mallori Johnson (Kindred) as twin African-American sisters who were burned badly as babies in a fire that left them with permanent, disfiguring scars. Now 21 years old, they embark on an epic quest for revenge and, and along the way, confront a charged family history that will push them to extraordinary lengths.

Jesse Plemons is gearing up for a reunion with filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and his Kinds of Kindness co-star Emma Stonein Bugonia, set to buzz into cinemas this fall. As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview event, we’re excited to share a never-before-seen image from the production that puts the two leading actors in the same frame. This time around, they’ll be playing enemies — although Stone’s character has absolutely no idea that she’s made a dangerous nemesis in Plemons’ Teddy. The film, which also features supporting performances from Alicia Silverstone (Clueless), Stavros Halkias (Let’s Start a Cult) and newcomer Aidan Delbis, serves as an English-language remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 feature, Save the Green Planet! and already looks like it has all the makings of another hit from the director of The Favourite and Poor Things.

Cameron Crowe’s beloved coming-of-age rock drama Almost Famous has officially landed on Pluto TV this August — and if you’ve never seen it, or it’s been a while since your last tour with Stillwater, there’s no better time to hop on the bus. Released in 2000, Almost Famous is widely regarded as one of the greatest music films ever made. Based on Crowe’s own teenage years as a journalist for Rolling Stone, the movie follows 15-year-old William Miller (played by a wide-eyed Patrick Fugit) as he gets the assignment of a lifetime: to hit the road with a rising rock band in the early 1970s and write about it. The result is a brilliantly heartfelt, hilarious, and regularly heartbreaking look at fame, fandom, and the bittersweet nature of growing up.

Elle Fanning said she was a fan of the character Effie Trinket before she cast to take on the role in the next “Hunger Games” film. Fanning has fans of her own to thank for getting to play the part.
The actress, who will soon star in “Predator: Badlands,” sat down with “Badlands” director Dan Trachtenberg and co-star Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi for an interview at San Diego Comic-Con. At the end of the interview, panel moderator Josh Horowitz turned the conversation to “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” congratulating Fanning on what he called “perfect casting.”
“I think fans kind of made this happen in a way,” Fanning said. “The studio said, like, they were getting kind of hounded online, being like ‘Elle needs to play Effie,’ and they were like, ‘Ok.'”

Sometimes studios just can’t fight the power of fan casting. In-demand star Elle Fanning recently confirmed that she joined prequel film “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” in part due to fans online.
“I think fans made this happen in a way,” Fanning told MTV in the below video. “The studio [Lionsgate] said they were getting kind of hounded online, like, ‘Elle needs to play Effie.'”
Fanning was announced to be playing Effie Trinket on May 20; the character was originally brought to the screen by Elizabeth Banks, whom Fanning said that she “loves.”
Fanning added to Et that Effie is her “favorite character” because of “how great” Banks’ performance is. According to Fanning, Banks also congratulated her on being cast in the role. “She sent me flowers that were beautiful, saying, ‘The odds are ever in your favor,'” Fanning said, continuing that she really does want...

Billy Bob Thornton has built a long career playing memorable characters. From his Oscar-winning role in “Sling Blade” to the grumpy St. Nick in “Bad Santa,” he is known for taking on unique parts. His work in films like “A Simple Plan” and “Monster’s Ball” has made him a respected actor in Hollywood.
Many successful actors have stories about the major roles they almost played. These “what if” moments are common in the film industry. An actor’s choice to turn down a part can change their career and lead to another actor’s big break. Thornton recently shared his own stories about two blockbuster movies he decided not to do.
During an appearance on a podcast, Thornton revealed he was offered the chance to play two major villains in huge film franchises. He turned down the part of the Green Goblin in the first “Spider-Man” movie and the role...

Hollywood history is full of “what if” scenarios, with actors famously turning down roles that later became iconic. Decisions to pass on a major film can happen for many reasons, from scheduling conflicts to creative differences. For actor Billy Bob Thornton, who has built a career on playing a wide range of memorable characters, the reasons for declining certain high-profile parts can be surprisingly straightforward and quite amusing.
Thornton is known for his versatility, taking on roles from the foul-mouthed star of “Bad Santa” to an Oscar-nominated part in the thriller “A Simple Plan”. He even won an Academy Award for writing the screenplay for “Sling Blade,” in which he also starred. His career choices often lean towards the unpredictable, a tendency that is clearly reflected in the roles he chooses to accept and, perhaps more interestingly, the ones he chooses to reject. His decisions offer a glimpse into the...

An actor of such magnetism, gravitas, style, charisma, and raw talent that people around the world are convinced that he's literally them (you're all delusional –- he's literally me), Ryan Gosling might just be the most beloved actor working in Hollywood right now. The coming years are set to be momentous for the Canadian former child star, who has gone from performing with Britney Spears on "The Mickey Mouse Club" to leading such highly-anticipated projects as Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's sci-fi thriller "Project Hail Mary" and Shawn Levy's "Star Wars: Starfighter" film.
Either movie could be yet another hit for Gosling, adding to a list of incredible projects so long it was hard to pick just 15 to talk about. Even so, we've painstakingly sifted through indie dramas, cult classics, overlooked box office duds, and more than a few major blockbusters to rank the best Ryan Gosling films of all time.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, begins today, July 1. Netflix is bringing the first five Mission: Impossible movies to the platform, giving longtime fans and new recruits a chance to binge the evolution of Tom Cruise’s legendary Imf agent, Ethan Hunt. From wire-hanging espionage to death-defying stunts atop skyscrapers and airplanes, this drop is the perfect lead-up to the recently released (and possibly final) installment: Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The lineup includes:
Mission: Impossible (1996) – Brian De Palma’s slick and twisty original where Ethan Hunt is framed and betrayed in classic '90s spy fashion. Mission: Impossible II (2000) – John Woo dials everything up with slow-motion gunplay, leather jackets, and a motorcycle joust. Mission: Impossible III (2006) – J.J. Abrams introduces emotional stakes and one of the series’ most menacing villains, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) – The Burj Khalifa sequence redefined Cruise’s stunt game and relaunched the franchise.

This July, Tom Cruise fans are getting an Independence Day blow—but not the Will Smith kind. On July 1, Prime Video is pulling the plug on not one, not two, but six of Cruise’s most iconic titles—including the one that landed him his first Oscar nomination, the one that gave us shirtless volleyball and high-altitude melodrama, and the first four chapters of a franchise that turned him into an unstoppable stunt machine. If you were planning to celebrate America’s birthday by watching Born on the Fourth of July, Top Gun, or revisiting Ethan Hunt’s first impossible missions, you’ve got about 48 hours to hit play before they vanish from Prime’s library.

Tom Cruise has been one of the biggest names in action movies for years, largely thanks to his role as Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible series. The franchise, which began in 1996, has grown into one of Hollywood’s most popular action franchises.
While the newer Mission: Impossible films get a lot of attention, one earlier movie in the series often doesn’t get the credit it deserves: Mission: Impossible III. This 2006 film is now available to watch for free on Pluto TV as of May 2025, giving fans a chance to revisit it or discover it for the first time.
In Mission: Impossible III, Ethan Hunt faces a dangerous villain named Owen Davian, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. The movie adds more personal stakes for Hunt, focusing on his efforts to save his fiancée Julia. This emotional depth was new for the series and helped make the story more engaging.

Tom Cruise has made a name for himself as one of Hollywood’s top action stars, and his Mission: Impossible movies are a big reason why. Since taking on the role of Ethan Hunt in 1996, Cruise has turned the franchise into one of the most successful action series of all time.
While some of the later movies have received huge praise, one earlier entry often gets overlooked, but now it’s making a comeback.
Mission: Impossible III is now available to stream for free on Pluto TV as of May 2025. This might be the perfect time to revisit the film, which many fans believe doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.

An underrated 2000s action movie from Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible series is available to stream for free. Since first slipping into Ethan Hunt's shoes back in 1996, Tom Cruise's stock as an action movie star has seen a monumental rise. From Minority Report to the Jack Reacher movies, Cruise has sprinted his way through a plethora of action flicks during his decorated onscreen career, but Mission: Impossible will always be the high-octane, thrill-a-minute franchise he's known best for.
With eight Mission: Impossible movies released across the span of almost 30 years, Ethan Hunt has enjoyed plenty of highlights, but the series noticeably kicked up a gear with Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol in 2011. That movie sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the hot streak continued for the next three entries, peaking with Mission: Impossible - Fallout's staggering 98% Tomatometer score. The stance of most admirers toward the third “Mission: Impossible” film feels oddly liminal. It’s as if the film merely exists—just another cog in the relentless engine of Ethan Hunt’s spy saga. And honestly, it’s not hard to see why. The film operates within the familiar mechanics of the first two entries. Neither the espionage nor the seduction has the same bite or spectacle, and the teamwork often feels more like a patch job holding together the storm of narrative twists. It also carries a deeply un-American, mainstream-spectacle sin: the plot is, unmistakably, driven by love. Which, let’s be real, is not what a Tom Cruise big-screen banger is usually sold on—especially not when we’re in the mood for chaos.
Yet, for a feature-length directorial debut, this film is everything a cautious first-timer could ask for. J.J. Abrams doesn’t go fully rogue with his vision,...

Films have a magical ability to transport us across worlds and time when done right. While fictional tales have their own magic, some stories are so extraordinary, so deeply human, that they deserve to be told on the silver screen.
Such biographical dramas, rooted in real-life events, have the rare power to not only captivate and entertain but also to educate and inspire. These films peel away the layers of history and paint a picture of the triumphs, struggles, and complexities of some of the most remarkable individuals who helped shape the world and occasionally, and made it a better place.
From tales of heroism in the face of unimaginable horrors and adversities to stories of quiet resilience, Hollywood has no shortage of biographical dramas that resonate. Although there are times when the creative flair takes over and adds a bit of dramatic flourish to create a story worthy of cinematic appeal,...

One of the best parts about a new release is the press tours and the information about movies new and old that are often revealed. These tours always tend to consist of behind-the-scenes stories, actors talking about their characters, their filming experience, and even fun facts about the stars in general. While Mission: Impossible —The Final Reckoning is Tom Cruise's eighth and final Mission: Impossible franchise, it's nothing short of the thrilling action fans love. To promote the movie, which is already one of the highest-grossing films of 2025 so far, Cruise embarked on a major press tour sharing fun facts about the movie itself and even about past projects.

What makes a movie hard to watch? A mixture of unpleasant imagery and taboo storytelling? No matter the answer, the fact that a movie is disturbing or difficult to endure doesn’t mean it isn’t without its qualities. Some of the most disturbing movies of all time are great works of art from auteur visionaries.
I hope you’ve got a strong stomach, because these are the 10 most disturbing movies that are hard to watch, but are actually great.
1. Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975) Directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini
Described by some as “irredeemably depraved,” Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom is the last film directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, released three weeks after his tragic murder. Set in the World War II era, the film follows four libertines who kidnap eighteen teenagers and subject them to four months of unimaginable torture. It’s not a fun time at the movies,...

The 1990s are having a moment, a quarter of a century (yikes!?) since we welcomed the new millennium. Maybe it's merely millennials sipping the sweet nectar of nostalgia, "kids these days" having an archaeological-like fascination with the past, or our collective desire to remember the last time the world wasn't constantly ending (except on the big screen). Whatever the reason, it's also worth noting the '90s were also a terrific time for movies.
It was the last decade before Hollywood completely sold its soul to serialized slop. Sure, the film industry has long fawned at the feet of franchises, but get this: in the '90s, only a handful of sequels led the end-of-year box office, while Best Picture-winners even topped the domestic box office twice. Beyond the box office, the decade saw the apex of the indie film movement, "grown up" movies still being made for theaters, and...

With Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning lighting up IMAX screens and charging toward box office dominance, there’s more hype than ever around Tom Cruise’s death-defying spy franchise. But in a twist, it’s 2006’s Mission: Impossible III that’s having a streaming resurgence. According to FlixPatrol, the J.J. Abrams-directed installment is currently sitting at #10 in the U.S. on Paramount+, and there’s a very good reason why.
Sure, M:i III has all the explosive stunts you’d expect from an Ethan Hunt adventure — but what makes it special is the villain. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Owen Davian remains the gold standard for antagonists in this franchise. In fact, M:i III may be the only entry where the villain is just as compelling as Cruise’s indestructible Imf agent, his impeccable stuntwork, and his endless, relentless running. Oh god, the running.
The third film arrived at a pivotal moment for the franchise.

Though Tom Cruise may be recognized for more action-packed titles, his best performance is arguably in the 1999 drama, Magnolia. As it turns out, Cruise improvised his character, Frank T.J. Mackey's X-rated rant.
Speaking at the British Film Institute, while promoting Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Cruise discussed his portrayal of Mackey, a misogynistic dating guru who teaches desperate men how to deal with women who challenge their masculinity. Cruise recalled the seminar scene in Magnolia, where Mackey uttered the infamous "respect the c**k" and "tame the c**t" lines that resonated with his audience.
According to the Hollywood legend, he invited director Thomas David Anderson to his home screening room for a performance, presenting a different version of Mackey than Anderson imagined. "And I lit it … and I had the whole music, and I basically wrote the opening monologue... my version. [Anderson was] like, 'What the f**k?’ I was like,...

After nearly two decades of speculation, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning finally revealed the true nature of the enigmatic "Rabbit's Foot" that drove the plot of 2006's Mission: Impossible III. While this has been a long-standing mystery within the franchise, an answer was finally provided in this curtain call.
What fans long assumed was simply a convenient MacGuffin turns out to have been a crucial piece of the franchise's overarching mythology and the key to understanding the Entity's origins. In Mission: Impossible III, the Rabbit's Foot was the film's central mystery object. Villain Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman) desperately wanted it. Ethan Hunt's team needed to retrieve it, but audiences were never told what it was beyond some dangerous bioweapon. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is now in theaters worldwide (read more about the array of popcorn buckets accompanying the film).

Sometimes the scariest performances aren’t the loudest explosions or the tallest buildings leapt in a single bound; they’re the ones whispered through clenched teeth, trembling hands, and eyes brimming with grief. And we stand by it. Because no mission, impossible or otherwise, comes close to what Tom Cruise gave us in Magnolia.
Forget gadgets, helicopters, or dangling from ceilings. Forget Ethan Hunt. The real enigma was Frank T.J. Mackey: a swaggering misogynist whose armor cracked on screen, exposing a pulse-quickening truth. It was so unvarnished that it reportedly brought the late Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman to tears.

Update: This story was originally published May 23, 2005; it was updated on May 27, 2025 with the addition of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.
For nearly three decades, Tom Cruise has been leading the Impossible Mission Force, but that chapter is coming to a close this week with Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. There may be Mission: Impossible movies in the future, but Cruise swears it's his last ride as Ethan Hunt.
Cruise originated the role in 1996's Mission: Impossible movie, which was based on the 1960s TV series of the same name. That first film had more overt ties to the show, but as the cinematic series continued, the films gradually became their own thing. Now, the franchise is synonymous with some of the best action movies ever made.

The last two installments of Mission Impossible already had an extra sense of weightage. Previously titled “Dead Reckoning – Part 2” (2025), it would later be retitled as the “Final Reckoning”, due to director and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, screenwriter Erik Jendersen and of course star Tom Cruise’s attempt to encapsulate thirty years of this franchise by connecting all the films (almost all of them) and provide a suitable coda. Needless to say, it is a ton and a half both in terms of runtime and ambition, and thus majorly flawed, but no less enjoyable.

The "Mission: Impossible" films began in 1996 when Brian De Palma helmed the first movie, which was based on the television series of the same name. The project starred Tom Cruise as Imf agent Ethan Hunt, and wit as a huge success. Now, the franchise is still thriving nearly 30 years later. Each movie features Hunt taking on outrageous assignments to save the world, and he's battled many industrious villains along the way.
The eighth installment, "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning," received a mixed review from /Film, and it could mark the franchise's end for Cruise. In the 2025 feature, Hunt continues to fight against The Entity, an all-knowing and self-aware AI that's set on world domination. While The Entity is technically the most powerful villain Ethan has faced, it's not necessarily the best. Each installment has multiple bad guys, and some are more memorable than others. From former Imf agents to arms dealers,...

In collaboration with Los Angeles’ American Cinematheque, New York’s Paris Theater will be presenting the second annual “Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair” from June 8 to June 14. This beloved film series embraces the darker side of cinema with empathy, introspection, and unflinching honesty.
The series features a stellar lineup of special guests for post-screening conversations:
Kathleen Turner will be present for a screening of the dark comedy “The War of the Roses” (1989), which has recently been remade by Jay Roach starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. John Turturro discusses “Miller’s Crossing” (1990), one of his standout collaborations with the Coen Brothers. Writer/Director Kenneth Lonergan returns to the Paris for a Q&a following “Manchester by the Sea” (2016), starring Academy Award-winner Casey Affleck and Lucas Hedges. Hot off their success with “The Brutalist,” Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold, joined by actor Daniel London, will discuss their work on “Vox Lux” (2018). Closing the series,...

This article contains spoilers for "Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning."
It's a pastime that occurs in cinephile and fandom circles every time a new installment of a beloved franchise is released: the ranking. With "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning" premiering in theaters this month, the debate has been raging online about "M:i" series rankings, for where some franchises have a more obvious pick of unimpeachable installments, the "Mission" films have maintained a high degree of quality entertainment. This means that there's not a clear contender for the top spot, as everything from "Fallout" to the original "Mission: Impossible" to "Ghost Protocol" have been vying for the gold.
There is, however, a consensus on the two films which appear at the bottom of most fans' lists. The first is John Woo's eternally maligned "Mission: Impossible 2." The second is J.J. Abrams' "Mission: Impossible III," a movie which...

New Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping Cast Revealed(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Lionsgate just dropped a major casting bomb for the Hunger Games prequel, and it’s one hell of a lineup. Based on Suzanne Collins’ March 2025 novel, Sunrise on the Reaping hits theaters on November 20, 2026. This time, we’re heading back more than 20 years before Katniss’ rebellion to follow a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy—yes, that Haymitch, long before he was the bitter, boozy mentor with a death glare and a flask.
Australian breakout Joseph Zada will step into the younger Haymitch’s shoes. You might’ve caught him in Total Control or Invisible Boys, but now he’s taking on the 50th Hunger Games (aka the Second Quarter Quell) with more heart and heartbreak than we’ve ever seen from the character. The twist? He’s sober, smitten, and politically aware.
Speaking of smitten — enter Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird,...

Original Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks expresses enthusiasm for the casting of a returning character in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. After five previous movies, the world of Suzanne Collins' beloved young adult book franchise is now set to return to the big screen once more with a new film from director Francis Lawrence. Based on Collins' novel of the same name, the Sunrise on the Reaping story follows Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada) as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games, with Elle Fanning recently confirmed to be playing the returning Effie Trinket.
In a recent interview with People at the premiere of The Better Sister, Banks reacts to the news that Fanning will be playing Effie in Sunrise on the Reaping.
