Iranian-French performer Golshifteh Farahani accepted Locarno Film Festival’s Excellence Award Davide Campari on Wednesday night during the 78th edition’s opening ceremony in Switzerland, a celebration that set a reflective tone for the ten-day event. The honor, presented on the Piazza Grande, recognizes careers that shape contemporary cinema; recent laureates include Mélanie Laurent and Ethan Hawke.
In an emotional address Farahani called cinema “a refuge in this dark world,” dedicating the prize to “everyone searching for light,” and evoking the destruction still unfolding in Gaza. Festival artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro praised her “charismatic and multifaceted” work, saying her performances “leave a deep mark on the eyes and hearts of film lovers.”
The Tehran-born actor first broke through at 14 in Dariush Mehrjui’s The Pear Tree and later appeared in titles ranging from Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies to Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson. Exiled since 2008 after clashing with Iranian authorities,...

George Clooney’s “Jay Kelly,” Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value” and Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” have been added to the New York Film Festival lineup.
This year’s main slate will showcase 34 films, including Cannes prizewinners, Sundance darlings and Venice premieres.

Cate Blanchett has cemented her acting prowess across genres and mediums. She's played Hela in Thor: Ragnarok and the iconic Galadriel in Lord of the Rings, and appeared in the Oceans franchise, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and TV series like Disclaimer. Fans have watched and loved her in every role. One can always rest assured, Blanchett will bring something new to the screen. Among her critically acclaimed performances is Todd Field’s psychological drama Tár, which has found a new streaming home.
Per ComicBook, three years after its initial release and award run, Tár will be available to stream on Peacock. The movie is a hard-hitting one, like all other Field movies, with its thought-provoking themes of power dynamics, authority, and abuse. Filmmakers including Robert Greene, Joshua Oppenheimer, Sarah Friedland, Radu Jude, Levan Akin, and Miguel Gomes are among the more than 35 who have signed an open letter from Film Workers for Palestine calling on indie distributor Mubi to part ways with investor Sequoia Capital.

The New York Film Festival has set Bradley Cooper’s Is This Thing On? as the closing night selection of its 63rd edition.
The Searchlight Pictures film stars Will Arnett and Laura Dern as Alex and Tess Novak, whose marriage has reached an impasse. With amicable sorrow, the couple—parents of two young boys—mutually agree to split up. But their separation leads to unpredictable midlife self-reckonings, most dramatically in Alex’s wild career pivot to become a confessional stand-up comedian in New York City’s West Village, where he finds new direction and camaraderie.
The screenplay by Cooper, Arnett, and Mark Chappell is inspired by British comedian John Bishop.
Is This Thing On?, following A Star Is Born and Maestro (NYFF61), “confirms his dexterity for representing the complexities of human relationships, constructing a film that is both lacerating and sweet-souled, funny and tender,”says NYFF.

“Is This Thing On?,” Bradley Cooper’s third directorial feature after “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” is set to close the New York Film Festival. The dramedy’s world premiere is set for Alice Tully Hall on Friday, October 10 — meaning it will skip festivals such as Toronto and Telluride and head straight for NYFF. IndieWire understands the film was not finished in time to submit for other festivals, including Venice. Cooper’s “Maestro” previously played the New York Film Festival in 2023.
Cooper also co-wrote the script, here with Mark Chappell (“See How They Run”) and the film’s star, Will Arnett. “Is This Thing On?” centers on a New York City comedian’s midlife crisis, and it’s inspired by the true story of British comedian John Bishop, who also executive-produces the Searchlight Pictures release. It co-stars Laura Dern, Ciaran Hinds, Sean Hayes, Peyton Manning(!), Amy Sedaris, and Cooper himself.

It's going to be a smashing time in Venice this year. The Venice Film Festival has unveiled the full lineup for its 82nd edition and the annual event will serve as the launching pad for Dwayne Johnson's Oscar campaign. The WWE star-turned-leading man plans to be front and center on the Lido with the competition entry The Smashing Machine from director Benny Safdie. Based on the life of Mma fighter Mark Kerr, the film reunites Johnson with his Jungle Cruise costar, Emily Blunt, and hopes to succeed in the awards race where A24's last sports picture — 2023's The Iron Claw — fell short.
But Johnson is stepping into the ring with some heavy-hitters in the Best Actor race, including George Clooney and Oscar Isaac. Both stars will be in Venice for their respective Netflix productions, Jay Kelly and Frankenstein, which hail from directors with proven awards track records. Clooney...

Jim Jarmusch is keeping it all in the family. The auteur reunites with a slew of his frequent collaborators for “Father Mother Sister Brother,” set to be released by Mubi. The film will first premiere at the 2025 Venice Film Festival in competition, Jarmusch’s first time in that section. The Cannes perennial premiered “Coffee and Cigarettes” out of competition in Venice in 2003.
“Father Mother Sister Brother” is designed as a triptych, with the trio of stories all concerning the relationships between adult children, “their somewhat distant parent (or parents),” per the film’s synopsis, and each other. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present, and each in a different country: “Father” is set in the Northeast U.S., “Mother” is in Dublin, Ireland, and “Sister Brother” is in Paris, France. Per any Jarmusch film, it’s a character study that blends melancholy and comedy.

Alberto Barbera presided over a lengthy press conference Tuesday morning, when he announced the stacked lineup for this year’s Venice Film Festival, which runs August 27-September 6.
The lineup is expansive, with big names and arthouse darlings sprinkled across the festival’s strands, even including the shorts program.
High-profile titles include Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny. Roberts leads the cast as a college professor who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star student (Edebiri) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Garfield), and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come into the light. The film will screen Out of Competition on Guadagnino and Amazon MGM Studios’ request, Barbera explained during the presser.

Oscar season starts here.
With its 2025 line-up, announced Tuesday, the Venice Film Festival has (again) taken the award season pole position, with a program packed with a frankly absurd number of must-see movies.
Among the hot awards titles heading to the Lido are Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, from A24, featuring Dwayne Johnson as two‑time UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife Dawn; Luca Guadagnino’s #MeToo–inspired thriller After the Hunt, for Amazon MGM Studios, starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri, will premiere out of competition; and Guillermo del Toro’s dark reimagining of Frankenstein, featuring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth, a Netflix production.
This will mark the Venice festival debut for both Roberts and Johnson.
Netflix, which sat out Vence last year, is back in force for 2025. Alongside Frankenstein, the streamer has Noah Baumbach’s comedy‑drama Jay Kelly,...
