During the early 2000’s, horror was on a mission to shake things up and keep audiences on the edge of their seats—literally. Gone were the days of predictable slasher flicks; this was an era where psychological scares, supernatural thrills, and mind-bending twists took center stage. In 2002, a film called Darkness decided to challenge its viewers with just that. Perhaps your house was a little too quiet or your lights flickered just a bit too often, or maybe your house was home to a cult practicing satanic rituals? This creepy flick stars Anna Paquin, who moves into a seemingly charming countryside home with her family—except this house has more than just creaky floors and drafty windows. It’s practically the poster child for “homes you definitely shouldn’t buy,” with a dark past that’s more twisted than a haunted house ride. As the shadows grow longer and the walls seem to close in,...

Sci-fi movies make up one of Hollywood's biggest markets, and there are many exciting releases to look forward to in 2024. The best sci-fi movies allow viewers to explore vast and imaginative worlds, providing a sense of escapism. 2023 saw several successful sci-fi movies debut, from franchise installments like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to the original film The Creator. 2024 has already had an upward trend for the genre, with far more releases slated.
2024 will or has already seen book adaptations, video game adaptations, original sci-fi films, and the return of major franchises like Alien, Planet of the Apes, Godzilla, and Mad Max. These movies are set to be directed by some of the best talent in the film industry, including Denis Villeneuve. However, many 2024 movies have been delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. While many of 2024's films ended up set, several were pushed back again. Nevertheless, 2024's sci-fi lineup...

Nine Perfect Strangers season 2 is in the works, and it already looks like the show has begun recruiting some talented stars. Season 1 is an adaption of the novel of the same name by Lianne Moriarity, whose other work, Big Little Lies, was also adapted by showrunner David E. Kelly and starred Nicole Kidman in the lead role. The plot for season 1 followed a group of strangers, escaping their lives and attempting to find inner peace at Tranquilliam House, an unorthodox wellness center overseen by an equally unorthodox founder Masha, (portrayed by Kidman).
At the time, Nine Perfect Strangers proved to be a hit with viewers, with its premiere making history as one of Hulus most-watched original series ever and its cast receiving much praise. Though season 1 of Nine Perfect Strangers was a massive hit for the streamer, the fate of the show beyond it's debut outing was never certain. Since...

John Wayne was a humbled man early in the 1960s. His passion project, "The Alamo," had fallen well short of box office expectations in 1961. An epic Western about the siege of the basement-less San Antonio mission, Wayne directed the film and took its failure personally. He didn't need a hit; even at his lowest point in the 1970s, a Wayne picture at a certain budget level was an automatic greenlight. Still, Wayne was a prideful man who actively tended to his legacy; he was mindful of his fan base, and sought their approval. So Wayne came charging out of his corner in 1962, and knocked out every last naysayer with Howard Hawks' "Hatari!," "How the West Was Won," "The Longest Day" and John Ford's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."
The Ford movie could've been Wayne's Western swan song, but a rifle-toting Wayne astride a horse still held commercial appeal,...

“One Life” is a movie starring Anthony Hopkins and John Flynn. With Helena Bonham Carter, Romola Garai and Lena Olin.
A profoundly emotional true story, “One Life,” is now streaming on Prime Video. The film showcases two towering pillars of excellence: the unparalleled performance of two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins and the hallmark quality of a BBC production, which invariably signifies top-tier craftsmanship.
The narrative of “One Life” inevitably draws comparisons to Steven Spielberg’s iconic “Schindler’s List” (1993). Spielberg’s film told the harrowing tale of a German industrialist who saved hundreds of Jewish children from certain death. Similarly, this film is set in Prague during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, accompanied by evocative piano music reminiscent of John Williams’ unforgettable score.
Does this diminish the film’s impact? While it certainly doesn’t detract from the authenticity of the true story it depicts, it does invite scrutiny regarding its storytelling approach.

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck have both won Oscars for Massachusetts-set movies; Damon for writing “Good Will Hunting” with Casey’s brother Ben, and Casey for acting in the tragic drama “Manchester by the Sea.” Damon and the Afflecks’ latest Boston-set team-up, heist comedy “The Instigators,” is unlikely to win them any additional gold, but it’s a fun ride nevertheless.
Damon — reuniting with his “Bourne Identity” director Doug Liman — stars as Rory, a financially strapped middle-aged man who decides to give heisting a shot. He teams up with Cobby for some scores, and then gets his therapist Donna (Academy Award nominee Hong Chau) involved against her will. How does that make her feel? Not good! The cast also includes heavy hitters like Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Rob Gronkowski. Yes, this movie is so Boston that Gronk is in it. “The Instigators” is now...

Frustrating plot twists in movies can impact enjoyment, with some being brilliant and unexpected while others fall short. Unnecessary and overly complicated twists can detract from character development and story coherence in great movies. Some plot twists, like the ones in Remember Me and Now You See Me, were disappointing and lacked proper setup or execution.
Frustrating plot twists in movies have continued to irritate many years after their initial release, but some stand out more than others. The biggest plot twists in movies were brilliant because they were so unexpected and left audiences mindblown, but other titles werent as successful. The pressure to provide such a shocking moment has even resulted in backtracking, and some films thankfully canceled their plot twists.

If you thought season one of Hulu’s limited series Nine Perfect Strangers gave a new definition of locked up, there’s going to be plenty of cabin fever come season 2.
We caught up with the series star and EP Nicole Kidman last night on the red carpet for her AFI Life Achievement Award to ask how the next season is coming along.
“Swiss Alps And Crazy! Hold on tight!” exclaimed Kidman. She was talking about the series’ setting which switches up from the Tranquillum House retreat in the fictional town of Cabrillo, CA to the Swiss Alps. Kidman plays the wellness resort’s founder Masha Dmitrichenko who has it out for her guests by dispensing to them a psychoactive drug, namely Psilocybin. Masha is arrested, cradling her hallucinated late daughter in her arms. However, she appears to have beaten the rap as the Tranquillum House guests covered for her illegal actions during police interviews.

Anthony Hopkins as Nicholas Winton in One Life. Courtesy of Bleecker Street
The moving One Life throws a spotlight on a British man, Nicholas Winton, who has been called the “British Schindler,” saved far more than one life in the early days of WWII. Anthony Hopkins plays the older Nicholas Winton, who in 1938 had organized a kindertransport, an effort to get hundreds of children, mostly Jewish, out of Prague ahead of the Nazis, but whose heroic efforts were not widely known or recognized until 1988, when he appeared on a popular British TV talk show.
The children and their families had fled to Prague after Hitler seized the Sudetenland, a German-speaking area in the north of the then Czechoslovakia, in 1938, the beginning of Hitler’s plan for conquest. In the infamous appeasement of Hitler, European countries, including Britain, had agreed to Hitler’s demands and ceded the Sudetenland to Germany, with a false promise of peace.

By now the inspiring story of Sir Nicholas Winton and the 669 children he saved from near certain death at the hand of the Nazis on the eve of World War II in Europe has been well told in books, documentaries, television programs, a 60 Minutes segment, and many other ways. Even a myth of sorts has been created around this heroic man that isn’t quite the whole truth, but nevertheless Nicky, as he was known, was indeed a hero. He also kept his story secret for 50 years until a BBC show called That’s Life uncovered it and became a sensation in England in the late 80’s. Winton never felt he kept his efforts a half century earlier “secret”, instead he “just never talked about it”.

After two weeks of moviegoers returning to theaters in force, we’re back to a weekend with a number of lower-key releases just hoping to make any sort of mark against the two big movies. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This weekend will once again be about “Kung Fu Panda 4” vs. “Dune: Part Two,” although it’s likely to be a second weekend with the animated movie dominating, with both of them remaining in over 4,000 theaters.
Opening in 2,850 theaters, the biggest new wide release of the weekend is the Mark Wahlberg drama “Arthur the King,” based on the true story of Mikael Lindnord (renamed “Michael Light” for the movie), an outdoors endurance racer who puts together a team to cross the Dominican Republic. That team also includes actors Simu Liu (“Barbie”), Nathalie Emmanuel (the “Fast and Furious” movies) and Ali Suliman (“Lone Survivor”), and along the way,...

The juxtaposition at the core of director James Hawes’s frustratingly staid One Life is between the gravity and urgency of Nicholas Winton’s Kindertransport rescue movement, which began almost a year before the start of World War II, and the man’s relative obscurity in 1987 living in Maidenhead, England. Winton helped to save 669 children in Prague from the horrors of the Holocaust, so Hawes’s film constitutes an attempt at immortalizing an unsung hero. But given the profound lack of risk that it takes in depicting Winton’s heroic efforts, One Life seems ironically destined to also fade into obscurity.

Adam Sandler's Spaceman diverged drastically from Spaceman of Bohemia, offering a different and relationship-centered narrative. Swedish director Johan Renck focused on romance, omitting the political themes, and introduced a South Korean mission for a less bleak ending. Changes like Jakub's Russian rescue and The Shoe Man's absence altered the plot and character motivations, leading to mixed reviews.
Warning! Spoilers for Netflix's Spaceman and Jaroslav Kalfař's Spaceman of Bohemia.
Adam Sandler's latest film, Spaceman, made some drastic departures from its source material, resulting in a mixed critical response. Based on the 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia, written by Jaroslav Kalfař, the Netflix film played fast and loose with its adaptation. Striving to add another more dramatic feather to Adam Sandler's cap, branching the beloved comedian further out into more thoughtful roles, Spaceman's all-star cast of distinguished performers wound up telling a remarkably different story from the original book.

Plot: An astronaut realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth.
Desperate to fix things with his wife, he is helped by a mysterious ancient creature he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship.

For those who are fans of the comedic Adam Sandler, the Adam Sandler we all know… this movie is not for you. It’s not a comedy and you won’t recognize the easygoing character that has made the American actor so famous.
Here we have a man who goes crazy in space, after six months of isolation, and starts seeing a spider. His visions become more and more overwhelming, and introspection, space, and nothingness take over a consciousness that begins to reflect on itself.

If a certain kind of sci-fi film is anything to go on, what humanity is most likely to discover, as we venture out on our second space race, is some aspect of ourselves. In Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey falls into a black hole only to find a multidimensional mirror into his own failures as a father. In James Gray’s Ad Astra, Brad Pitt goes to Jupiter and beyond to find peace with his dad. As far back as Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris, an alien planet manifests the memories of the astronauts who discover it. Even the cosmic trip of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey stages a return to origins of sorts.

For a time, it seemed like an auteur war was about to break out over Adam Sandler, with some of America’s most revered directors vying to find the right role for the comedian. It was rumored, but never confirmed, that Quentin Tarantino imagined him a key role while writing Inglourious Basterds, although this might have been wishful thinking from critics who saw the talented Sandler heading in the same direction as John Travolta until Pulp Fiction saved him from a lifetime of Look Who’s Talking movies. In the end, Paul Thomas Anderson got there first, with Punch Drunk Love (2002), although the glow of a bona fide arthouse hit didn’t last long, and Jack and Jill still happened less than ten years later.

Adam Sandler was faced with a new challenge on the set of his upcoming Netflix film “Spaceman”: using wires to appear like an astronaut floating in space. At the film’s Berlin Film Festival press conference on Wednesday, Sandler cheekily reflected on the experience, saying the “wires hurt me.”
“The wires were tough because my body’s not the most flexible body. The wires hurt me, they dug into me. The stuntmen who would wire me up every day, I would say ‘that hurts’ and they didn’t believe me,” Sandler said as the room erupted in laughter. “But we did it as a team. [Director] Johan [Renck] would say, ‘You don’t look like you’re floating, what are you doing?’ And then I would say, ‘Well, what should we do?’ And then they’d wire Johan up and he’d be like, ‘More like this!'”

Prime Video’s new romantic comedy Upgraded ends with Ana (Camila Mendes) and Will (Archie Renaux) reuniting in New York after both of their professional lives massively changed. Toward the end of Upgraded, Ana’s "white lie" is exposed by her coworkers, which leads not only to her getting fired by Claire but also to her relationship with Will falling apart. Between the loss of her job and the fallout with Will, it seemed like Ana’s time in London would end on a sad note. Fortunately, things eventually worked out for her in the new Prime Video movie.

"Upgraded" is a well-received rom-com that tells an important story about recognizing one's worth and the challenges women face in achieving success. Camila Mendes stars as Ana, an intern at a New York auction house who dreams of owning an art gallery. Other cast members include Archie Renaux, Marisa Tomei, and Lena Olin.
Romantic comedies are making a comeback in the 2020s, including Upgraded, which stars Riverdale's Camila Mendes and multiple other talented actors and actresses. The 2024 film, directed by Carlson Young and written by Christine Lenig, Justin Matthews, and Luke Spencer Roberts, revolves around an intern working at an upscale New York auction house who dreams of owning an art gallery one day. However, she gets into trouble when she pretends to be her boss while talking to a handsome man on a flight to London, where the auction house director has invited her on a work trip.

One Life is heading to DVD and Blu-ray in the UK this March in the UK: details of the physical media release are right here.
The first cinema release of the year, and it was a good one: that’d be One Life, the dramatic retelling of the story of the late Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton.
Played by both Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Flynn in the movie, the film earned strong reviews, and solid box office too. Directed by James Hawes – his feature directorial debut too – the movie also featured turns from Lena Olin, Romola Garai, Alex Sharp, Marthe Keller, Jonathan Pryce and Helena Bonham Carter.
Now, with its cinema run pretty much done, we get news of its home release.
Warner Bros will first of all be making the film available to buy and rent digitally from next week, on 19th February.
Then, for those after the physical media release,...
