The Acorn TV exclusive cozy mystery series Darby and Joan returned for its long-awaited second season in late 2024, but will the show get a third season soon? Debuting back in 2022 (and created by Phillip Gwynne and Glenys Rowe), the series concerns a recent widow named Joan (Greta Scacchi) who goes on a soul-searching trip to Australia following the death of her husband. While on her expedition, she runs across former detective Jack Darby (Bryan Brown), and the unlikely duo soon find themselves on the trail of intriguing mysteries as they explore the countryside, and their own pasts, together.
While it's not the only mystery series on the underrated streaming service, Acorn TV, Darby and Joan is unique because it's as much about the weekly mysteries as it is about the main characters. Season 1 put the focus on Joan's search for answers regarding her late husband, and with that story largely wrapped,...

Stephen King‘s short story Autopsy Room Four was first published in the 1997 collection Six Stories – which, fitting for the title, did indeed contain six stories. That book was limited to just 1100 copies, but thankfully King ended up putting all six of the stories into different collections over the years. Autopsy Room Four was also included in the 1997 anthology Robert Bloch’s Psychos before making its way into the 2002 King collection Everything’s Eventual. In 2006, the story was adapted for the screen as an episode of the TNT King mini-series Nightmares and Dreamscapes… and now, Deadline reports that a feature film adaptation is in the works.
King has given the greenlight for the new adaptation, which is being produced by Jon Levin, who was previously an executive producer on Netflix’s King adaptation In the Tall Grass. The film will be written and directed by Ranjeet S. Marwa, whose credits include Ballistic,...

There is something indelibly appealing about Greek mythology movies, from classics like Spartacus to more recent fare like Troy (2004). Incorporating imaginative elements into the sincerity of religion, they are magical realism of the highest order, wherein humans coexist with monsters. The gods were as flawed as humans, making them relatable. They were vain and vengeful, inviting convoluted and operatic drama. Further, Angient Greek civilization was a highpoint of ancient civilization. Their grandiose stories and lives will perpetuate them in eternity - a point proven by how epic in scale so many timeless movies based on Ancient Greek myths are.
Many modern storytelling tropes can be traced to ancient Greek mythology; from the epic journey of Odysseus to the fable of Orpheus and Eurydice, themes of tragedy, triumph, love, and loss are common in these ancient tales. They've proven to be fertile grounds for Hollywood. Not every big-budget interpretation of Greek mythology has succeeded,...

Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey are foundational works of Western literature, yet they are seldom adapted for the screen today. The Iliad was last made into a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster in 2004’s “Troy.” But you must go back to 1954 to find an equivalent for The Odyssey in “Ulysses” starring Kirk Douglas. Since then, The Odyssey has had some notable television adaptations: 1968’s Italian production “Odissea” (with Bekim Fehmiu and Irene Papas), 1997’s American production “The Odyssey” and 2013’s French production “Odysseus”.

Plot: Acclaimed journalist Catherine Ravenscroft built her reputation revealing the misdeeds and transgressions of others. When she receives a novel from an unknown author, she is horrified to realize she is now the main character in a story that exposes her darkest secrets. As Catherine races to uncover the writer’s true identity, she is forced to confront her past before it destroys both her own life and her relationships with her husband Robert and their son Nicholas.
Review: Grief can make someone do terrible things, with revenge at the top of the list. While vengeance in the form of violent retribution has made for more entertaining cinematic experiences, there is something to be said for subtly destroying an adversary through slow, psychological torture. Alfonso Cuaron’s series Disclaimer is a brutal examination of the fallout of bad choices and how getting away with something can come back to haunt you decades later.

We are a country obsessed with reboots. Refashioning tired narratives into something that ideally becomes new in its retelling. Or, perhaps, just makes studio executives more money. We after all must endure an endless return of Marvel and DC characters, adaptations of adaptations, until everything feels like a shitty copy of a copy, rasterized, and remade until the sign and signifier barely have any resemblance.
But which stories do we reboot and why? Which narratives deserve a second look? And of all of them, and in this economy, why was it Presumed Innocent,...

Apple renews Presumed Innocent for Season 2 after the Jake Gyllenhaal-led thriller climbs the charts
Apple TV+ is so thrilled with the performance of its new legal drama Presumed Innocent that it is renewing the Jake Gyllenhaal-led thriller for another season. Some creative forces behind the first season, David E. Kelly, J.J. Abrams, and Gyllenhaal, return as executive producers for Presumed Innocent Season 2, with author Scott Turow co-executive producing. Wait. Isn’t Presumed Innocent a one-and-done story? Not when money is waiting in the wings, my friends!
Presumed Innocent debuted on Apple TV+ one month ago and has been tearing up the charts since then. It’s the most-viewed drama ever on Apple TV+, with the final two episodes arriving on July 17 and July 24. While the story of Gyllenhaal’s Rusty Sabich and Ruth Negga’s Barbara Sabitch is concluded, Presumed Innocent Season 2 will revolve “around a suspenseful, brand new case.” Apple won’t reveal casting for some time, though it’s possible characters...

Attorney-turned-selling novelist Scott Turow made the cover of Time magazine the summer of 1990 describing him as the “Bard of the Litigious Age.” And 34 years later, the 75-year-old still is. Over the past four decades, Turow has written 13 works of fiction which have been translated into 40 languages and have sold more than 30 million copies. Several have been transformed into miniseries and TV movies.
In fact, Hollywood filmmakers were salivating in 1987 for the rights to Turow’s first novel, “Presumed Innocent,” a clever, sexy murder mystery with twists and turns that would baffle even Columbo, about a prosecutor accused of murdering the attractive colleague with whom he had been romantically involved “It began a sort of Hollywood frenzy,” Turow told me in a 1992 L.A. Times interview. “It was one weekend’s madness.” And for good reason, the novel spent 44 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list and another five months on the paperback charts.

Presumed Innocent, a novel published in 1987 by lawyer-turned-author Scott Turow, came from a specific era of popular fiction about the law, which prefigured John Grisham's massive run not long after.
Grisham's novels featured heroic lawyers against mobsters, Klansmen, and other bad guys.
Turow's most popular novel, on the other hand, was the much less heroic story of a prosecuting attorney accused of murdering a fellow lawyer, a woman with whom he had an extramarital affair.
Just as Grisham's novels The Firm, A Time to Kill, and The Pelican Brief drew considerable interest from Hollywood, Turow's novel Presumed Innocent was made into a movie in 1990, directed by Alan J. Pakula (All the President's Men).

Apple TV+ has now released the new tense trailer for Presumed Innocent, the limited series coming to the streaming service courtesy of David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams. The legal drama has Jake Gyllenhaal in for the fight of his life as he defends himself from allegations of murdering a peer with whom he shared a complicated entanglement. It doesn’t look good for Gyllenhaal’s character, as a plethora of evidence is working against him, and he can only continually profess his innocence.
The official synopsis reads,
“Gyllenhaal is set to star as Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor whose world is upended when a close colleague is murdered — and the evidence begins to point to Rusty himself. The role would be his first ongoing part in a TV series. Presumed Innocent was previously adapted for a 1990 feature film that starred Harrison Ford as Sabich, along with Bonnie Bedelia and Raul Julia.

In Apple TV+’s upcoming limited series, Jake Gyllenhaal hopes to be Presumed Innocent and not proven guilty.
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Scott Turow — which of course previously begat the 1990 Harrison Ford/Greta Scacchi/Bonnie Bedelia film — the eight-episode series covers a horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (played by Gyllenhaal) is suspected of the crime. “The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together,” reads its official description.

Mike Figgis has been shooting a behind-the-scenes documentary for the past 18 months about the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. It’s called Megadoc.
Figgis told me Monday that it’s been edited but there’s allowance for the fact that the film played in competition here at the Cannes Film Festival. He recorded an interview with the cinema titan the other day.
Figgis, who was introduced into the Coppola clan back in the mid 1990s after directing Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas, told me that the documentary is “very much a fly-on-the-wall” and also features conversations with various cast members — Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Dustin Hoffman, Shia Labeouf — and Coppola’s wife Eleanor Coppola, who shot the footage and directed her own study of her husband’s work for the acclaimed Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, about the making of 1979s Apocalypse Now.

Order in the court! The Apple TV+ series Presumed Innocent, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga, will arrive on the streaming platform earlier than anticipated. Previously scheduled for its premiere on June 14, the courtroom thriller comes to Apple TV+ on June 12. Inspired by the Alan J. Pakula-directed thriller of the same name, the original film starred Harrison Ford, Raul Julia, and Greta Scacchi. The newest version of Presumed Innocent hails from David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams, with Gyllenhaal and Negga commanding the drama.
Presumed Innocent revolves around a vicious murder that sends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorneys’ office reeling when one of their representatives becomes a suspect in the crime. Veteran British actor known for his many and varied film, TV and stage roles in a career that spanned more than 70 years
There was something grand, large, embracing about the actor Joss Ackland, who has died aged 95. He was a fixture in British films for several decades and a stalwart of the Old Vic, the Royal Shakespeare Company – he played Falstaff in the opening RSC production of Henry IV, Parts One and Two, in the new Barbican Centre in 1982 – and the West End stage.
He appeared in more than 100 films, and countless TV plays and series, usually, in later years, white-haired and bearded, but always with energy and force, whether as the cuckolded husband, Jock Delves Broughton, in Michael Radford’s White Mischief (1987) with Greta Scacchi and Charles Dance, or as the drug-running heavy in Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.

There’s often been unfair snobbery about the films of Merchant Ivory, the production banner founded in 1961 by producer Ismail Merchant and director James Ivory, which gives Stephen Soucy’s entertaining documentary study its title. The British costume drama was widely considered a wheezing genre — fusty, middlebrow and too calcified in its literary sources to acquire much cinematic vitality — when A Room with a View came along in 1986 and became a global art-house crossover hit. At their best, notably in Howards End and Remains of the Day, Merchant Ivory’s films stand the test of time as influential works that removed the starch from the stodgy period piece.
Contemporaries reductively dismissed their output as “Laura Ashley filmmaking,” referencing the design firm known for its pretty Romantic Victorian inspirations. But Merchant Ivory did more than anyone from the mid-1980s to the early ‘90s to popularize and legitimize the thematically and emotionally rich costume drama.

The actor on 80s stardom, growing Tuscan veg in Sussex and why theatre remains her sacred space

Evan Peters and his “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” co-star Niecy Nash-Betts are currently the odds-on favorites to take home the Emmys for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress, respectively. If both prevail in January, “Dahmer” will join a very small group of programs that have bagged both prizes.
Since the limited series/TV movie supporting acting categories were created in 1975, only four programs have won both awards. The first to do it was the telefilm “The Promise” (1986), which racked up victories for James Woods in lead and Piper Laurie in supporting. It was followed by another TV movie, 1996’s “Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny” (Alan Rickman and Greta Scacchi), and the two-part miniseries “George Wallace” in 1998 (Gary Sinise and Mare Winningham).

At the beginning of the film, Sarah's father passes away which causes Sarah and Mia grief. The Australian psychological horror movie Run Rabbit Run features a cast of recognizable names led by Succession star Sarah Snook. Premiering at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival before landing on Netflix, Run Rabbit Run centers on a fertility doctor who must cope with her daughter's sudden obsession with the past. Following in the footsteps of other notable Aussie horror films like The Babadook, Run Rabbit Run puts the trauma of motherhood at the forefront of the story and delivers chills that are sometimes supernatural, and sometimes psychological. Embodying the modern "elevated horror" genre, Run Rabbit Run offers a terrifying feast for the senses.

Sarah Snook is stuck in a twisted game of hide and seek with the daughter she thought she knew.
The “Succession” actress leads Daina Reid’s feature directorial debut “Run Rabbit Run,” which premiered at 2023 Sundance. Snook plays Sarah, a mother and fertility doctor whose own daughter Mia’s behavior drastically becomes more and more unhinged upon her seventh birthday. A surprise pet rabbit present unlocks Mia’s (Lily Latorre) memories of a supposed past life, and sending Sarah down a rabbit hole of horror.
Damon Herriman and Greta Scacchi also star.
Director Reid has previously helmed episodes of “The Shining Girls” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” both starring Elisabeth Moss who was once attached to “Run Rabbit Run.” The script is penned by Australian novelist Hannah Kent, with an original idea developed by Carver Films. Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw of Carver serve as producers, with Snook executive producing along with director Reid.

"You don't like me. You make me hide and hide." Netflix has revealed their official trailer for an indie horror film titled Run Rabbit Run, which first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It received mixed reviews, despite being one of the most talked about horror films premiering in the Midnight section of the festival. Sarah Snook plays a fertility doctor who believes firmly in life and death, but after noticing the strange behavior of her young daughter, must challenge her own values and confront a ghost from her past. Seems like it will have some scary twists. Described as a "exquisitely fine-tuned psychological thriller, elegantly incorporating unsettling visual and aural cues to signal how destabilized Sarah’s world has become." Also starring Lily Latorre, Damon Herriman, and Greta Scacchi. Alas this trailer doesn't make this look any better than the mixed reviews I heard from Sundance,...

Following a premiere at Sundance 2023, where Netflix picked up the psychological horror film for an undisclosed sum, the streaming service has set a June 28 release date and unveiled the first trailer for "Run Rabbit Run." With Sarah Snook ("Succession") in the lead, Australian director Daina Reid's second feature film is about a single mother and fertility doctor named Sarah (Snook) who is shaken by her 7-year-old daughter Mia's (Lily Latorre) strange behavior and "inexplicable memories of a past identity."
The connection, as the "Run Rabbit Run" trailer reveals, is Sarah's late sister Alice who had an interest in wild rabbits and went missing when she was just seven years old. Mia turns out to have both things in common with Alice when she takes a liking to a rabbit that appears on their doorstep. You know where this is going, right? Mia believes she's Alice and seemingly begins turning on her mother,...
