During the back half of the 1980s, there was this glamorous, extravagantly talented actor who kept turning up in exploitation movies and pumping them full of an erotic verve they generally didn't deserve. There were any number of beautiful, desirable ladies who could provide the va-va-voom films like "King Solomon's Mines," "Above the Law," and "Action Jackson" required, but the path to stardom has always been different for women, so here was Sharon Stone blowing everyone else who shared a frame with her straight off the screen.
It took no less a cinematic genius than Paul Verhoeven to realize that Stone had supernova star power. After a test run in "Total Recall," he unleashed her on filmgoers the world over with the most stylishly sleazy studio movie ever made in "Basic Instinct." Every now and then, a film studio surprises you, and with The Jolly Monkey, Asylum Pictures delivers one of its most unexpected entries to date. Known primarily for mockbusters, over-the-top disaster flicks and SyFy-esque creature features, the studio takes a sharp left turn into the realm of backwoods slasher horror. The result is a flawed but undeniably compelling entry in the genre, one that punches above its weight and plays with familiar tropes in surprisingly effective ways.
The plot centres on a cursed, long-abandoned roadside establishment: the Jolly Monkey Motel. Forty years prior, entire families mysteriously vanished while staying there. Now, the descendants of the original owners, chief among them the Blythe and Williams families, reunite at the site to decide its future.

Benedict Cumberbatch called Hollywood a “grossly wasteful industry” during an interview on “Ruthie’s Table 4” podcast. The Oscar nominee is no stranger to massive studio productions given his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Cumberbatch loves undergoing a “body transformation” for his work, he also says “it’s horrific eating beyond your appetite.”
“Going back to responsibility and resourcefulness and sustainability, it’s just like, ‘What am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I’m eating,'” Cumberbatch said, noting he would eat five meals a day while getting into Doctor Strange shape, in addition to snacks like boiled eggs, almonds and cheese in between meals.
“It’s a grossly wasteful industry,” he continued. “Think about set builds that aren’t recycled, think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy. The amount of wattage you need...

She's done action, comedy, drama, sci-fi, thrillers — and won an Oscar along the way (and been nominated for a second). So defining Geena Davis' career in a word or two isn't the simplest of tasks. But that's exactly how she likes it. "I'm very fortunate that I've been able to be in every kind of genre and style of movie," she says. "I've never been typecast, which is just fantastic. I'm so lucky."
So what is it that makes her say yes to a given script?
"I only figured it out after I'd been in the business for a little while, and it was that I wanted to play a character," Davis tells Gold Derby. "I was drawn to characters who were in charge of their own fate, who steered their own life. And I thought at first, 'Oh, I just don't like female characters who don't seem to get to do much,...

Gordon Gekko has (mostly) left the building. Michael Douglas made headlines over the weekend when he announced the he would be stepping back from acting during an appearance at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic.
"I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop," said the veteran actor and producer, who last appeared onscreen in 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. "I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intentions of going back."
At the same time, Douglas acknowledged that — just like Sean Connery — he's going to be careful about never saying never again. "I say I’m not retired because if something special came up, I’d go back, but otherwise, no."

As humans, there are a lot of ways we try to cope after someone ends a relationship with us. Some of us eat entire pints of ice cream, while others spend their time at the gym or trying on new clothes. Some of us simply listen to Taylor Swift's entire discography on repeat. However, few things can take you out of those repetitive patterns of heartbreak like a good, relatable film about love lost or taken away.
From serious, Oscar-bait dramas to laugh-out-loud-funny rom-coms, plenty of films perfectly capture the universal experience of going through a break-up, whether you're an adult struggling with a family-splitting divorce or a teenager experiencing your first crushing heartbreak. These 15 films might have happy endings, bittersweet endings, or just plain sad endings, but they might in some way offer comfort for those who are currently going through the summer without another person by their side.

There's long been a divide between what's popular with general audiences and what's popular with the Academy Award voters. Popular, beloved directors like Alfred Hitchcock famously never won an Oscar, for instance, just as actor Samuel L. Jackson has never won one despite starring in seemingly every big movie ever. One particularly fun example of this phenomenon came with Kurt Russell's 1984 movie "Swing Shift," a box office bomb that grossed $6.6 million on a $15 million budget.
Why did it bomb? The general consensus was that the movie failed to live up to its promising premise. The movie was about the labor shortage during WWII, where women found unexpected power in the workforce before being pushed back into traditional roles the moment the war was over. The movie captured the feeling of the time period well and featured a few hard-hitting moments, but it didn't nail it in the way that...

John Huston directed some of the best movies in film history. From his pathbreaking noirs like The Maltese Falcon and The Asphalt Jungle to The African Queen or The Man Who Would Be King, Huston was nominated for 14 Oscars, winning two for The Treasure of Sierra Madre. Huston directed his final film, The Dead, while ill with emphysema, and died months before the film’s release. His penultimate film, the black comedy organized crime film Prizzi’s Honor, was easily one of his best — and that’s saying something.
Based on Richard Condon’s 1982 novel, Prizzi’s Honor was released 40 years ago, on June 14, 1985. The film centers Charley Partanna (Jack Nicholson), a mob hitman for the Prizzi family, who falls for Irene Walker (Kathleen Turner). The two become romantically entangled before the situation gets messy: he discovers Walker was married to a man Charley killed for stealing from the mob. That’s...

Andy Serkis is heading back to Middle-earth, and this time he’s not just voicing and motion-capturing the most iconic CGI creature in cinema — he’s directing too. While promoting his long-gestating animated adaptation of Animal Farm at the Annecy Animation Festival in France, Serkis sat down with Collider’s Steve Weintraub and offered fans an exciting update on his upcoming Lord of the Rings spin-off centered on the artist formerly known as Smeagol in The Hunt for Gollum. Diving into the development of the movie, Serkis opened up by saying:
“We're very early on in the process. We've been talking about the film over the course of the last year. We’re about to start a period of prep in the next few months or so. We will be shooting in the early to mid-part of next year, I guess, and then it'll be as long as it takes to shoot,...

George Orwell had a unique talent for predicting the future in his books, notably 1984, but now seeing director Andy Serkis’ new animated take on Orwell’s 1945 all-too-predictive allegory and satirical story, Animal Farm, he seems more like a Nostradamus than ever. With a screenplay, alternately funny and frighteningly perceptive by Nicholas Stoller, this gorgeously animated version is not outwardly trying to be political but nevertheless is uncannily meeting its time and proving to be a little too close for comfort to America’s drift toward authoritarianism.
How did Orwell know this little parable he meant to mirror the 1917 Russian revolution, read by school kids for decades, could become so relevant in 2025, and for that matter how did these filmmakers and Serkis know? He started his quest to bring this new version to the screen at least as far back to 2013, three years before Donald Trump was elected for his first term,...

Andy Serkis's upcoming animated project has been cooking for over a decade at this point. With the release date just around the corner, Animal Farm has finally shared a sneak peek of what audiences can expect from director Serkis's genre-swapping adaptation of George Orwell's 1945 novella of the same name. While Orwell's original political allegory is more akin to the mo-cap actor's famous Planet of the Apesfilms, Serkis is pivoting to a more light-hearted and family-friendly version of the wartime tale. From the release of the poster, audiences could tell that the story would be a much more optimistic retelling. The newly released clip of a scene between a porky Napoleon, voiced by Seth Rogen, and a young and impressionable pig named Lucky, voiced by Gaten Matarazzo, tells audiences all they need to know about the upcoming animated comedy.

Seth Rogen does not have high expectations for Kieran Culkin in the first footage from Andy Serkis’ animated feature Animal Farm.
Serkis directed the adaptation of George Orwell’s 1945 novella of the same name that focuses on a group of animals rising up against their owners. Animal Farm premieres this month at the Annecy Animation Festival and does not yet have a domestic release plan.
Rogen and Culkin lead the extensive cast that also includes Gaten Matarazzo, Glenn Close, Laverne Cox, Steve Buscemi, Woody Harrelson, Jim Parsons, Kathleen Turner, Iman Vellani and Serkis.
The footage shows pig Napoleon (Rogen) bonding with impressionable Lucky (Matarazzo) when Squealer also tries to connect with them. “Please remove yourself from this,” Rogen warns Culkin. “We’re trying to have a father-son moment.”

Ahead of its premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Monday, the first footage from Andy Serkis's hotly anticipated animated adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm has been revealed. Variety exclusively shared the clip from Aniventure, which centers on Seth Rogen's Napoleon, who has a heartfelt conversation with Gaten Matarazzo's young pig Lucky, albeit with a brief interruption from Squealer, played by recent Oscar winner Kieran Culkin. It's a brief look at the pigs taking a moment to reflect in the aftermath of the animal rebellion on the farm, albeit with a more humorous, colorful, and family-friendly spin than the original novel. However, there are hints of the harrowing events to come as Napoleon hints that maybe not all animals are equal.

In 1981, Harrison Ford traded in the galaxy that is far far away for a fedora and whip to help him swing through the 1930s as Indiana Jones. He first appears in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which includes some of the coolest moments in the "Indiana Jones" franchise. It was the beginning of a new era for Ford that lasted well into the 2020s, and the franchise's success is not just based on action alone. It's about telling stories that connect the past to the present while the mission focuses on finding a way to save the future. Yes, Indiana can be arrogant and all-knowing, but he is always focused on saving artifacts that are essential in telling the story of humankind.

Andy Serkis has unveiled the voice cast for his animated adaptation of the classic George Orwell allegory “Animal Farm.” It’s a film that Serkis has wanted to direct for over a decade, and it’s finally becoming a reality.
The cast of the film includes Seth Rogen (“The Studio”), Gaten Matarazzo (“Stranger Things”), Steve Buscemi (“Boardwalk Empire”), Glenn Close (“Fatal Attraction”), Laverne Cox (“Orange is the New Black”), Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), Woody Harrelson (“True Detective”), Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”), Andy Serkis, Kathleen Turner (“Peggy Sue Got Married”), and Iman Vellani (“Ms. Marvel”).
A classic novella first published in 1945, “Animal Farm” is a satirical political allegory about anthropomorphized animals who rebel against their human farmer owners in the hopes of creating a new society, but the story shows how new challenges can emerge and that revolution is just the beginning. Rogen leads the cast as the cunning pig named Napoleon.

Baltimore native John Waters is filmdom’s pencil-mustached titan of trash who has spent a lifetime of dumpster-diving into a vat of bad taste, sleaze, kinky gross-outs, over-the-top camp, maudlin melodramatics, sick jokes, taboo sexuality, vulgarity and bizarre personalities. At least he has a fabulous sense of humor. The director is a New York University film school dropout who instead became a scholar of transgressive, envelope-shredding cinema, influenced by the directorial likes of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Federico Fellini, William Castle, Douglas Sirk and Ingmar Bergman. Early on, Waters assembled a stock company of players from suburban Baltimore who he would the Dreamlanders, including Mink Stole and Edith Massey.
But Waters would find his true muse and favorite leading lady in his childhood friend, Glenn Milstead, a drag queen whose alter-ego was known as Divine. When Milstead died at age 42 from an enlarged heart in 1988, Waters' output went more mainstream, with...

Upcoming comedy The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as a warring couple, arrives in August. Have a trailer:
On paper, everything about Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses looks to be in order. You get Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as the unhappy couple, delivering withering put-downs in a steadily escalating conflict that gets rather out of hand.
Plus, it has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara. This doesn’t look like it will have the frisson of the Danny DeVito film that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, though. The original War Of The Roses was a continuation of the chemistry the duo perfected in 1984’s Romancing The Stone and the following year’s sequel, The Jewel Of The Nile.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman play a picture-perfect married couple who descend into a bitter cat-and-dog divorce battle in the trailer for The Roses, director Jay Roach’s dark comedy.
Cumberbatch is Theo, whose career nosedives while Ivy (Colman) sees her ambitions take off just as their increasingly competitive and resentful marriage leads to a bracingly nasty divorce battle to divide up what they own.
“Things are getting a little hand,” a deadpanning Theo tells a menacingly angry Ivy at one point in the trailer, as she points a pistol in his direction.
Amid screaming matches and food fights, Theo and Ivy fight to the finish in the reimagining of the 1989 classic film The War of the Roses, which was based on the novel by Warren Adler and had Danny DeVito directing leads Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman have a not-so-cordial split in the first trailer for The Roses, the forthcoming remake of The War of the Roses.
Jay Roach directed the new movie from a script by Tony McNamara. Hitting theaters Aug. 29 from Searchlight Pictures, the project’s cast includes Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, Belinda Bromilow and Kate McKinnon.
The ribald footage shared at CinemaCon shows Cumberbatch and Colman as a happy couple who quickly fall apart — and seem to have fun doing just that. “I suppose sometimes I do hate you,” Cumberbatch says to Colman in the trailer before clarifying, “Sporadic hatred.”
As things sour, Colman’s character quips about her hubby, “Sometimes he’s got his cock in me, and I can’t really tell.” Soon, Cumberbatch gets an unwelcome surprise while he’s soaking in the bath tub.

Big changes might be coming to the Tardis. Word on the street is that Ncuti Gatwa, the current Doctor in ‘Doctor Who,’ could be stepping away after his second series. Industry insider DanielRPK dropped this bombshell on his Patreon, claiming Gatwa’s got his sights set on a bigger prize—Hollywood. If true, it’s a bold shift for the actor who’s only just started wielding the sonic screwdriver.
Gatwa took over as the Fifteenth Doctor in 2023, following Jodie Whittaker’s exit. His first full series aired last year, and I’ve got to say, he brought a fresh energy to the role. Benedict Cumberbatch remains as busy as ever these days, with no less than three movies premiering in 2025. The Roses is a remake of War Of The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s arriving this very summer.
While we often roll our eyes at Hollywood’s lack of originality and continued reliance on remakes, we’re looking forward to Fox Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses.
It has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara, who imbued both of those films humour that ranged from slapstick to biting to outright shocking.
Also, this is an anglicised take on the Danny DeVito film that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in a continuation of the love-hate onscreen pairing the duo perfected in 1984’s Romancing The Stone and its sequel, 1985’s The Jewel Of The Nile.

The official synopsis for The Roses reads: “Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.” The film also stars Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, Belinda Bromilow, and Kate McKinnon.
