Robert Eggers has claimed the idea of making a contemporary movie makes him "ill".The 41-year-old filmmaker, whose previous works have covered New England in the 1630s and 1890s, with 'The Witch' and 'The Lighthouse' respectively, the Viking era with 'The Northman' and 1830s Transylvania with latest offering 'Nosferatu', can't bear the idea of having to film modern inventions such as cars and mobile phones. He told Rotten Tomatoes: “The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill. “And the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. And to make a contemporary story you have to photograph a cellphone — it’s just how life is — so no.”The filmmaker admitted he is unlikely to stray beyond World War II - which took place between 1939 and 1945 - for a future project.Asked if there's a specific time period "ceiling" he would travel to,...

Stephen King's authorial brand might be the farthest from romance writing, but the king of horror has written about romance to great effect. One of King's most gutwrenching works, "Lisey's Story," is inspired by deeply personal circumstances. It revolves around the titular Lisey who mourns the death of her husband while revisiting their intense, complex relationship. This is a story about a dead writer who is only valued by the world for his literary contributions, with Lisey being the only person capable of piecing together the complete picture of the man he was. Although a romance, the book ventures into the dark, surreal recesses of the psyche, along with the real threat of parasocial relationships taken a step too far.
The romance element in King's novels is not always this twisted or bittersweet in flavor. In fact, "11/22/63" — a quasi-historical time-travel fantasy that takes some wild swings — presents its central...

Robert Eggers is one of the few directors left in Hollywood making a name for themselves under the old auteur model, where people become interested in their movies because they made them, not because they're tied to some already-established IP. Between The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman and now Nosferatu, Eggers has forged his own path and actually succeeded. It's pretty much him and Christopher Nolan holding that particular fort.
And Eggers will continue to blaze new trails with a new movie called Werwulf. He's already covered witches and vampires, so this seems like the next natural step. But Deadline reports that he's signed on to make a sequel to Labyrinth, the 1986 dark fantasy movie starring Jennifer Connelly, David Bowie, and a bunch of Jim Henson puppets.

Robert Eggers has teased he might be working on a new ‘Labyrinth’ movie.Reports the ‘Nosferatu’ director, 41, was set to helm a sequel to the 1986 fantasy cult classic first began to surface earlier this week, and Eggers has not denied the speculation, instead saying he “always [has] a ton of things in development”.When asked about the ‘Labyrinth’ rumours by ComicBook.com, Eggers said: “The thing is, I always have a ton of things in development because you need to survive this industry, and you don’t know what is going to hit next. But I definitely want the next film I make to be an original movie.” Deadline has since reported Eggers is indeed set to direct a new ‘Labyrinth’ film for TriStar Pictures, which the outlet claims will be a sequel instead of a remake of Jim Henson’s original movie. While plot details about the movie are currently unknown,...

Jeff Sneider recently reported that Nosferatu director Robert Eggers was set to helm a new Labyrinth movie, and while some were quick to dismiss the rumor, it's now been confirmed.
Back in 2020, we got word that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson had signed on to helm a sequel to Jim Henson's fantasy classic for Sony-owned studio TriStar Pictures. Updates have pretty much been non-existent since, and we had heard that another filmmaker was being sought for the project - we just didn't expect it to be Eggers!
According to Deadline, Eggers is also set to write the project with frequent collaborator Sjón for TriStar. Producers will include Lisa Henson, Chris Columbus, and Eleanor Columbus, while Brian Henson will executive produce.

Robert Eggers will tackle the long awaited Labyrinth 2, and it’s now been announced. A bit more information here.
It’s been an exciting week for Robert Eggers. His remake of Nosferatu has been hugely successful, and it was recently confirmed that his next film will be Werwulf, due out at the end of 2026. Even got through the spell checker, that.
But there’s more! According to Deadline, the filmmaker has closed a deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth film for TriStar Pictures.
The original Labyrinth is a much loved cult classic from 1986. It saw the great Jim Henson direct from a screenplay by Monty Python member Terry Jones.
The story follows sixteen year old Sarah, played by Jennifer Connelly, who must navigate a treacherous maze in order to save her baby brother from The Goblin King, Jareth, played by David Bowie. Throughout her journey, Sarah encounters...

Thanks to Robert Eggers' vampire film "Nosferatu" and Coralie Fargeat's "The Substance," horror had a surprisingly strong showing at the 2025 Oscar nominations. But instead of resting on his laurels and high-fiving Bill Skarsgård for delivering a gruesomely fresh take on the horror icon Count Orlok, Eggers has already set his sights on a new movie, the excellently-named 13th century werewolf tale "Werwulf." Oh, and if that wasn't enough to keep him working for a while, Deadline reports that he's also now closed a deal with TriStar pictures to co-write and direct a sequel to "Labyrinth."
The original 1986 "Labyrinth" is a marvel. The Jim Henson movie rolls out amazing sights and sounds as it tells us about Sarah's (Jennifer Connelly) quest to retrieve her brother (Toby Froud) from the clutches of Jareth the Goblin King. It's a creature fest, musical, fantasy film, and a bona fide classic -- and since Eggers...

He's conquered the realms of witches (The Witch), vampires (Nosferatu), and very soon will have taken a 13th century set stab at werewolves too (Werwulf), but emerging master of the macabre Robert Eggers has already decided where his watchful eye will be cast next — and we'll bet it's not somewhere you had on your Eggers bingo card. Hot on the heels of scoring four Oscar nominations for his take on F.W. Murnau's Gothic chiller Nosferatu, Deadline is reporting that Eggers has closed a deal to write and direct a sequel to Jim Henson's 1986 dark fantasy Labyrinth at TriStar.
According to Deadline, the film — which is explicitly stated to be a sequel to rather than a remake of the cult Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie starring classic — is being penned by Eggers alongside Icelandic poet Sjón, his co-writer on both The Northman and the upcoming Werwulf. Robert Eggers reminds me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power to finally, at long last, bring a sequel to Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth into the world! A day after announcing his Werwulf film project for Focus Features and Nosferatu coming to digital platforms, Robert Eggers confirms he’s writing and directing a Labyrinth sequel for TriStar Pictures. “Nosferatu” director Robert Eggers is set to write and direct the sequel to Jim Henson’s the 1986 cult fantasy movie “Labyrinth” for TriStar Pictures, Variety has confirmed.
Eggers is writing the project with his writing partner Sjón, while Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus are producing alongside Lisa Henson. Brian Henson is executive producing.
The sequel originally had Scott Derrickson set to direct. When asked about the status of the project for TriStar Pictures and Jim Henson Pictures in 2023, Derrickson admitted it was “a tough nut to crack” and apparently exited after that. Did movies for kids peak in the 1990s? It's entirely possible. We arrived at this question after sifting through piles of our old VHS tapes to produce a list of the best '90s kids' movies, noting the amount of high-quality entertainment we had to choose from. Make no mistake, this was a hard list to assemble and required more than a few heartbreaking sacrifices. Even cherished Walt Disney productions like "Mulan" and "Tarzan" were left on the outside looking in, which speaks volumes about the last great decade. "Beethoven?" Nope. "Rookie of the Year?" Nadda. "Angels in the Outfield?" Non. The Lindsey Lohan "Parent Trap?" Nein.
Thankfully, the films that made the final cut are genuinely excellent. So, don't get too mad if your favorite children's flicks are nowhere to be found. Chances are, we love them too but had to make room for those that were marginally better.

Some of the most powerful films ever made have been inspired by real-life events, bringing true stories to the big screen in unforgettable ways. Whether they are trying to capture moments of triumph or tragedy, well-made movies based on a true story more often than not grip audiences, spark conversation, and have an everlasting impact.
While they may not always be the most historically accurate movies, these titles have a way of making real-life feel more vivid with their masterful storytelling, emotional depth, and cinematic brilliance. What ultimately makes a movie based on a true story great is it can properly capture the emotions behind the stories. Whether it’s the haunting journey depicted in 12 Years a Slave or the riveting rise-and-fall narrative of Goodfellas, some of them continue to be hailed as the best movies of all time, securing their place as timeless gems in the world of cinema.

Two-time Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou revealed he still struggles to “make a living” in Hollywood despite receiving critical acclaim and awards attention for films big and small.

Selena Gomez's chances at earning her first acting nomination at the Oscars could now be ruined. Although she is perhaps best known as a pop star and businesswoman, Gomez has also been an actor since she was a child. After being cast on Barney & Friends in the early 2000s, she went on to play roles in a variety of prominent film and television projects, including Wizards of Waverly Place, Only Murders in the Building, Hotel Transylvania, and Spring Breakers.
However, she delivered one of her best performances yet after joining the Emilia Pérez cast. The 2024 Jacques Audiard musical, which also stars Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón, sees Gomez playing the wife of a Mexican cartel leader. 2026 will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the musical fantasy film Labyrinth… and if all goes well, we might be able to celebrate the anniversary with a new film that’s set in the world of the original film. Cruise pushed Paramount to keep the flick out of streaming’s clutches, waiting for theaters to return. It landed harder than a fighter jet when it finally hit in May 2022. Nearly $1.5 billion worldwide later, it became Cruise’s most prominent film ever.
Spielberg’s praise isn’t just fanboying—it’s facts. Hollywood was on shaky ground post-pandemic, with theaters struggling and studios betting on streaming. Then Maverick came in hot, reminding everyone why the big screen still matters.

A lot of people regard Jim Henson’s Labyrinth as an untouchable 80s classic and feel it could never be made today. I guess Sony is going to try. According to some outside reports, Sony has hired Robert Eggers, the man behind the recent Nosferatu movie, to look into developing a Labyrinth remake. Since this guy’s bread and butter is the grungy horror genre (he also made The Witch and The Northman), there’s reason to hope he won’t sand the edges down, however, remakes rarely turn out as good as the originals. The original Labyrinth is about Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), who has a new baby brother she hates. She’s been saddled with babysitting him and she hates that too! She despises him so much she wishes the goblins would take him away. Upon saying those words, Jareth The Goblin King whooshes through her window to do just that.

Robert Eggers'... Labyrinth?
Back in 2020, we got word that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson had signed on to helm a sequel to Jim Henson's fantasy classic for Sony-owned studio TriStar Pictures.
Updates have pretty much been non-existent since, and we're now hearing that another filmmaker is set to direct the project.
Whether the movie is still being developed as a direct sequel or a remake/reboot/reimagining is not clear, but Jeff Sneider is reporting that none other than Robert Eggers is set to write and direct a new Labyrinth film for Sony and the Jim Henson Company.
This may not seem like the type of project Eggers would be interested in, but the original Labyrinth does have some horror elements, and there's always a chance the studio has given him a bit of leeway to take the story in a slightly darker direction.

On the face of it, Lucy does not seem like the kind of person who would go on a spiritual retreat. She’d probably agree with that herself. But she’d like to be, and so she struggles through the enforced silences and the sharing sessions, hoping to attain a kind of enlightenment she doesn’t really believe in. An embittered former teen actor, played by Jennifer Connelly with the scorched, brittle air of one steadily checking out of polite society, her thorny aura is an ill fit for the expensive Oregon sanctuary she’s signed up for, all hushed meditation and touchy-feely trust exercises, and this energy-based conflict gives Alice Englert’s strange, alluring satirical drama “Bad Behaviour” an immediate pull of intrigue — vibes so discordantly violent, one feels they have to give way to something physical and drastic.

The science fiction genre had a banner year in 2024 and it’s time to look back on the best of the best.
This year brought us a handful of new “Star Wars” shows that took the canon to new eras, a devastating finale to Netflix’s beloved animated series “Arcane” and reintroduced fans to the classic X-Men in “X-Men ’97.” It was an embarrassment of riches for fans of the genre.
These are the nine best sci-fi TV shows that made their mark on the year.

There have been plenty of good-to-great reboots of beloved series in the past few years. But there’s something about “X-Men ’97,” perhaps owing to its animated origins, that feels as though these new episodes are picking up right where the beloved 1990s show left off. And that’s no easy feat. While the animation has definitely improved,...

Pretty Woman’s lead role went to various actresses before Julia Roberts ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
After this, Julia Roberts snagged the role to launch her to global fame. It was a classic mix of talent, timing, and, let’s be honest, some seriously quirky Hollywood decisions.
Let’s start with Molly Ringwald. The teen queen of the 1980s turned down Vivian because she felt “something icky about it.” She candidly told The Guardian that even back then, she sensed a story vibe that just didn’t sit right. Ringwald’s hesitation paved the way for others to test their luck—and face similar hurdles.
So who else tried to snag the role of Vivian? Let’s just say Disney and Garry Marshall, the director behind Pretty Woman, had some ambitious picks. Karen Allen was first in the mix. Then came Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, and even Diane Lane. But each time,...

Kelly McGillis didn't return for Top Gun: Maverick, and many wondered why Charlie wasn't in Top Gun 2 when she was Maverick's love interest in the first movie. Charlie was hesitant to start a romance with Maverick, but attraction between them was just too strong. Despite their mutual admiration, Goose's tragic death and Charlie's job caused their brief split, but Top Gun's ending ultimately saw them getting back together, hinting at a long-term future. This is why there being no Kelly McGillis Top Gun: Maverick appearance, and Mitchell with a new love interest in Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly), raised eyebrows.
Top Gun: Maverick picks up Maverick's story years after the original. The movie has Maverick forced to confront aspects of his past with the arrival of Rooster (Miles Teller), the son of his former co-pilot Goose (Anthony Edwards). In fact, even his new love interest Penny was mentioned in the original Top Gun.

There are some movie sequels which elicit groans when they are announced, but not all of these sequels turn out as poorly as expected. As Hollywood has accelerated the trend of producing sequels to beloved movies, many people have grown tired of seeing a lack of originality. When some recent sequels were announced, they were immediately dismissed as unwarranted cash-grabs, although there have been a few surprises.
Legacy sequels tend to come under more intense scrutiny than most other sequels, since fans of the original movies sometimes feel that their favorites are being tampered with. Other surprising sequels in recent years have been those that massively surpassed audience expectations by taking a huge step-up in quality from the movies that came before them. Sequels are generally derided, but they can be just as worthy as any movie if they are executed with care and passion.

With so much going on in Dark Matter season 1, it can be difficult to miss some of the alterations and additions made to the 2016 novel of the same name, but season 2 of the Apple TV+ adaptation can excitingly build on one of the most interesting tweaks made to the other realities in Blake Crouch's source material. Although some Dark Matter book changes take the form of completely new storylines and characters, others are simply augmenting what's already there. The story's premise allows for even further exploration of one tweak in particular.
According to Screen, Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly are returning to the Dark Matter season 2 cast. This isn't completely surprising, but the ending of Dark Matter season 1 brought their story to a pretty satisfying conclusion, so how their arcs will be continued becomes incredibly compelling. Jennifer Connelly started acting at age 12 will a small part in Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon A Time In America” (1984). She achieved mainstream success in Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth” (1985), and shortly after graduated to more adult roles. However, due to her stunning looks she was often relegated to play either the hero’s girlfriend or the main character’s mistress.
She wouldn’t receive widespread critical recognition until “Requiem For A Dream” (2000) and “A Beautiful Mind” (2001), the latter of which would earn her an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress. While Connelly is still often called upon to play the romantic interest, she has proven herself to be talented and versatile enough to make those characters more complicated.

When James Cameron’s Alita: Battle Angel hit theaters in 2019, it brought Yukito Kishiro’s beloved manga to life in a dazzlingly ambitious way. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by Cameron, the film delivered a high-octane, cyberpunk adventure, complete with cutting-edge visuals and a story that fans fell in love with. Fans especially loved Rosa Salazar's portrayal of Alita, a cyborg getting through the dangerous Iron City, and the story left audiences hungry for more. But, five years later, the long-awaited sequel remains a "what if".
Despite its moderate box office success, Alita: Battle Angel has found a new surge in popularity on Netflix, where it climbed to the platform’s Global Top 10 charts in November 2024. The renewed interest shows that Alita's story still has many fans who love it. But with no concrete sequel plans on the horizon, fans are left wondering why Hollywood's best anime adaptation remains incomplete.

A James Cameron-produced $405 million action movie has landed on Netflix's global chart five years later. Cameron is one of the most commercially successful filmmakers of all time, having written and directed Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic three of the top five highest-grossing films of all time. Collectively, James Cameron's movies have made over $8 billion worldwide, making him the second-highest-grossing director of all time behind Steven Spielberg, though Cameron has only directed 13 movies to Spielberg's 34.
Cameron occasionally produces and pens projects that he doesn't direct. As the co-writer and director of The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Cameron produced and co-wrote the story for 2019's Terminator: Dark Fate. During the 1990s, Cameron produced the projects Point Break and Strange Days, which were directed by his ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow. Children's live-action fantasy movies are some of the most popular within the genre among audiences of all ages. Just because a film is meant for kids doesn't mean it won't connect with adults or prove to be a classic in the decades to come. Darker themes and elements are a key part of any children's story, and many of these films are so highly rated and well remembered because they take kids and their opinions seriously. Incorporating scary moments and more mature themes within a safe story is a great way to connect with younger audiences and convey deeper messages.
Despite it being considered a more kid-friendly genre, there are plenty of animated movies that are pretty dark, demonstrating how versatile the medium is. Similarly, live-action can prove to be just as magical and immersive as animation, creating innovative sets and creatures with practical movie sets that aren't CGI. While...

As we move closer to the end of 2024, now is the perfect time to look back at some of the worst shows of the year. It has been a fruitful year for TV watchers, particularly those who prefer to stream their series. We’ve seen an interesting mix of new shows and the anticipated return of old favorites. Still, this doesn’t mean they have all been winners.
Before we share which shows have been the most disappointing, let’s give recognition to some of the many series we’ve enjoyed the most. At the top of my list, I have Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, Prime Video’s Fallout, and Hulu’s The Bear season 3. I know Netflix’s Baby Reindeer also received a lot of attention, as well as the returning Prime Video favorite, The Boys with season 4. Which shows have made it to your favorites list so far?...

Image Source: Walt Disney Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was born, Disney had high hopes for its own comic book movie, 1991’s The Rocketeer. While the critics gave it good reviews, audiences weren’t nearly as enthusiastic. Disney had envisioned The Rocketeer as a franchise, but plans for a sequel were dropped after the film was a box office failure. Still, as with several underappreciated films from that era, home video and streaming have helped it resurface as a cult classic. Jennifer Connelly, who starred alongside Billy Campbell and Timothy Dalton, told us that when the film was first released, most of the special effects were practical effects something she had never seen before. AMC Networks — the company behind such cable channel brands as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV, as well as such streaming services as AMC+, Acorn TV and horror streamer Shudder — reported a 10 percent drop in third-quarter U.S. advertising revenue to $133 million on Friday. It cited “linear ratings declines and a challenging ad market, partly offset by digital and advanced advertising revenue growth.”
Quarterly affiliate revenue decreased 13 percent to $164 million, “primarily due to basic subscriber declines.”
After returning to streaming subscriber growth in the third quarter of last year after two quarters of declines, the company added around 200,000 users in the latest quarter to end September with a total of 11.8 million subs, compared with 11.6 million as of the end of June.

Since Netflix shook up the film and series world, tons of other streaming options have popped up. Over time, they’ve all developed their own original content, which has helped each platform stand out. The problem is that Apple TV+ seems to have dropped the ball here. Sure, creating original shows is great, but they still need to be promoted.
