Alison Brie says she has a “problem” with the current era of the Scream franchise, arguing that “too many people live,” and joking that the “core four needs to die.” In a recent podcast appearance, the Scream 4 alum added that she would happily return for the next film despite her character’s demise, quipping, “Where’s my role in Scream 7?” Her husband and collaborator Dave Franco suggested the series’ loosened rules could allow a comeback via dream or flashback.
Brie also revisited one recent creative choice, calling the death of longtime favorite Dewey a “mistake,” while noting that her affection for the original trio remains intact. The actor played publicist Rebecca Walters in 2011’s Scream 4, the last entry directed by Wes Craven, and her commentary arrives amid renewed fan debate over how aggressively the modern installments dispatch or protect major characters.

In the world of horror cinema, there are few movies as influential as Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street. Released in 1984, the film helped revitalize the slasher genre by introducing fans to a new kind of villain who wasn't shackled to the restraints of reality, but could kill people in their dreams. As with most horror hits of the time, it helped spawn an entire franchise that lasted well into the 90s, and now, for the first time ever, the entire series is being presented theatrically in stunning 4K thanks to Alamo Drafthouse.
The new remastered theatrical releases will kick off on August 29th at Alamo Drafthouse locations across the country with the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, and run straight through to the end of September with Wes Craven's New Nightmare rounding out the event. Cillian Murphy is now more than two years removed from his Oscar-winning performance in Oppenheimer, but one of his movies that’s more than 20 years old just got a disappointing streaming update. Murphy stars alongside Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and Brian Cox (Succession) in Red Eye, the 2005 psychological thriller following a woman who accidentally befriends a terrorist on her flight who forces her to help him assassinate the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. Red Eye has been streaming on Netflix for the last few months, but the streamer has confirmed that the last day to watch the film will be on August 31. Red Eye earned an 80% from critics and 64% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and the film grossed $96 million at the box office against a $36 million budget.

Just six short years ago, James Gunn and his friends made a movie about an evil version of teenage Superman. Not Bizarro Superman or Ultraman. An unofficial, deranged, and horrifying version that killed his own parents and wanted to destroy the earth with pure teenage angst. Who instead of saving squirrels, watched girls in their bedrooms late at night. Oh, and exploded lightbulb shards into a waitress’s eyeball before ripping apart her insides and placing them in his spaceship clubhouse for his parents to find. The same guy who is now the co-running the entire DC Universe and director of the colorful, happy Superman of 2025 once spearheaded the effort to create the antithesis to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in a completely different way. It’s awesome that the powers that be let this meta-movie exist at all. That Sony allowed Gunn and company to make a hard-r,...

Stephen King, while a widely celebrated master of horror, sometimes has wonky taste in movies. He infamously dislikes Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of "The Shining," feeling it takes too many liberties with his source novel, among other things. This is, of course, fair ("The Shining" was King's idea to begin with), but he does tend to overlook how masterfully crafted Kubrick's film is and how the alterations don't make it any less scary. King has also commented on his favorite movies several times over the years and has listed a few legit classics -- like "Paths of Glory," "Dr. Strangelove," and "Les Diaboliques" -- along with stuff like the middling Gerard Butler thriller "Plane." He's even praised the 2009 remake of "The Last House on the Left" over Wes Craven's original film. King certainly enjoys keeping us on our toes.

Hollywood is currently in love with legacy sequels that come decades after the original. What’s up with that?
We already knew Hollywood loved its sequels. Just look at how many Iron Mans, Nightmare On Elms Streets and Godzillas there are. We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to our favourite characters.
Especially now. Hollywood has fallen in love with a different kind of sequel; the legacy sequel or the – ready for this? – legasequel. These sequels come sometimes 20 or 30 years after their predecessor and try to recreate the magic all over again. Some succeed better than others. They’re designed to reboot a franchise as much as continue it, bringing it to the promised land of a new audience.
It’s hard to say which film specifically started the trend, but it’s certainly not a new phenomenon. Psycho got its sequel in the 80s, over 20 years after Alfred Hitchcock...

I’m going to need you to stay with me here, okay? Jordan Peele fundamentally changed the horror genre when his debut Get Out was released in 2017. Beyond being a box office success (and critical hit), Get Out was also the rare horror movie to not only be represented at the Academy Awards but actually win. Congrats to Jordan Peele, the first Black man to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Seriously, that’s no small feat. Somewhat unfairly, Peele’s faced enormous pressure since then. With such a staggering debut—especially as a Black horror filmmaker—Peele’s been tasked with maintaining that same level of quality, even if that innately subjective metric is impossible to meet.
Of course, Peele’s directorial debut was anything but a fluke. Come on, Nope is a generational achievement. If it’s been a beat, watch it again. It’s staggeringly good.

Scream 4 alum, Alison Brie, is sharing her thoughts on the revived franchise.
While couple Brie and Dave Franco were promoting their horror film, Together, they appeared on the Shut Up Evan Podcast and Scream was brought up. Brie portrayed Rebecca Walters, Sidney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) assistant in the 2011 film, which was the last Scream film directed by horror legend Wes Craven, before he died in 2015.
Franco noted, “I feel like with new Scream rules, even though she dies brutally, we could bring her back,” to which Brie responded, “Yeah, where’s my role in Scream 7?”
Indeed, the slasher franchise has famously brought back characters in hallucination sequences like Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis in Scream (2022). Notably, Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher, David Arquette’s Dewey Riley and Scott Foley’s Roman Bridger, who all died in previous films, will return for the seventh installment.

The Premiere is a mockumentary about a documentary about making a musical about a movie. More specifically, it’s about staging a musical based on Wes Craven‘s Scream.
Confused? Watch the trailer below, then check out the film when it hits VOD on August 19 via Tribeca Films.
It follows a narcissistic theater producer creating a documentary about his journey to stage a musical version of his favorite movie, Scream. Along the way, he clashes with quirky characters played by real-life Hamptons locals, to awkward and outrageous results.
Drawing inspiration from cringe comedy classics and crafted largely through improvisation, The Premiere is described as “a keen satire about the Hamptons with a biting love letter to the community at its core.”
Christopher Bouckoms and Sam Pezzullo write, direct, and produce in their feature debut.

Freddy’s back! Well, sort of. Today, we finally witnessed the unveiling of the long-awaited, brand-new 4K Blu-ray collection of the first seven films from the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, courtesy of Warner Bros. (excluding the remake—which is fine). Leaks around the web had given some hints as to what to expect with the set. Those details are now official. Below you’ll find everything you need to know about the collection, along with an announcement trailer.
If you’re a Freddy Krueger fan like me, you’ve been begging for something—anything-in the Nightmare world since that critically panned remake dropped fifteen years ago. So, the franchise finally coming to 4K Uhd for the first time is certainly a dream come true. At the very least, it’s a release that is long overdue.
You cannot overstate the impact of Freddy Krueger and the A Nightmare on Elm Street films.

Last year, Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Wes Craven-directed classic A Nightmare on Elm Street by giving the film a 4K Uhd release. Soon after that, fans started hearing rumblings that they’re planning to follow up that release with a Nightmare on Elm Street franchise 4K Uhd box set, with A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge director Jack Sholder and Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare director Rachel Talalay both confirmed they were working on regrading and remastering their films. Now, details on the box set have been revealed by our friends at Bloody Disgusting! The A Nightmare on Elm Street 4K franchise box set is scheduled to be released on September 30th and it’s available for pre-order at This Link.
What’s interesting is that this remains a seven-film box set, just like when the films were first released on DVD.

In celebration of the A Nightmare on Elm Street 4K Uhd box set, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge director Jack Sholder chatted with Bloody Disgusting about his notorious sequel, its legacy after 40 years, and the new 4K restoration.
“Wes Craven was supposed to direct it, and he dropped out about six weeks before the start of production. The train was going down the track when New Line asked me if I would do it,” Sholder recalls.
“There wasn’t a whole lot of time to really think about legacy or anything other than how the hell am I gonna get this movie made in six weeks with, like, a hundred special effects, none of which I knew how to do, and a whole bunch of other things.

The leadership shuffle at Paramount ahead of its merger at Skydance continues as Mike Ireland is departing after nearly five years at the studio, including four as head of its motion picture group.
Insiders at Paramount say Ireland will stay at the studio in a consulting role during the transition and is considering a producing deal.
His exit comes a day after Skydance announced its new leadership team, with its features and sports president Don Granger serving as head of the motion picture group and reporting to new studio co-chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein. Jt Mollner, director of last year’s Strange Darling and writer of this year’s Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk, is shooting his shot over on Twitter. And it’s one hell of a shot.
Mollner tweets, “I’ve written something for Meryl Streep.”
And yes, it’s a horror movie…
“It’s a nasty, passionate horror role like nothing she’s ever played,” Mollner continues. “She’s our greatest living actor, so I know it’s a long shot, but damn would it be cool if she said yes.”
A three-time Oscar winner, Meryl Streep is known as one of the all-time greatest actors, but she hasn’t been seen anywhere near the horror genre since Robert Zemeckis’ comedy-horror Death Becomes Her back in 1992. Streep did work with Wes Craven back in 1999 on Music of the Heart, the rare film in Craven’s filmography that was far outside the horror genre.

John Gulager's 2005 goopy horror/comedy flick "Feast" was the resulting film wrought by season three of "Project Greenlight." For those unfamiliar with "Project Greenlight," it was a documentary series on HBO (previously on Bravo in 2005) overseen by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Each season, the two stars would host a screenwriting competition, seeking the best scripts they could find from amateur or unproven authors. The winner would then see their script made into a feature film. Sometimes the writer would direct their own film, sometimes a first-time filmmaker would be paired with the screenplay. "Project Greenlight" then followed the filmmaking process, from casting through final editing, detailing the way a low-budget film is made. The finished movies each got limited theatrical runs.
The idea behind "Project Greenlight" was to offer aspiring filmmakers their "big break," adding new voices to the filmmaking community. It's a neat idea, although the films...

As a former theater kid, any movie about community or local theater often skyrockets to the top of my watchlist. Such is the case with Christopher Bouckoms and

It would seem as if Wes Craven didn’t have any downtime back in the 1980s. If he wasn’t actively making a movie, then he was writing the script for his next one. And if Craven’s work wasn’t found on the big screen, there was a good chance he had briefly pivoted to the small screen. Yet it was that waiting period for A Nightmare on Elm Street that led to Craven agreeing to make The Hills Have Eyes Part II. Getting financing for Elm Street was proving to be a hassle, and plans for a Craven-helmed adaptation of V. C. Andrews’ Flowers in the Attic had also fallen through at Universal. So, in an effort to stay busy, and knowing the project would be funded from the get-go, Craven began shooting what many now consider to be his worst movie.
Success means sequels in the movie biz.

I love rewatching my favorite films time and again. There are a number of my faves that I’ve easily seen over 100 times. That’s one of the many reasons why I have a sizable physical media collection. I take comfort in knowing that when the urge strikes, I will have all of my familiar favorites available at my fingertips.
My Dread Central colleague Chad Collins is a thoughtful chap and a fellow physical media enthusiast who also enjoys revisiting his favorite films with a certain regularity. A few months back, Chad penned a piece celebrating one of his favorite slasher films as the “most rewatchable horror movie ever made.” As it turns out, that very picture is now available to stream on HBO Max!

Slashers aren’t my personal favorite sub-genre—they’re high up there—but I do consider them to be perhaps the most significant of the horror family for one particular reason…at one point or another, just about every teenager encounters them. Everything from Halloween or A Nightmare on Elm Street to more recent fare such as the Fear Street trilogy, these films about teens confronting sex, drugs and death, they speak to a pivotal moment in our lives that allows them to resonate during a crucial age. Of course, it helps that they also tend to be pretty damn fun.
Every generation has that handful of slasher films that were important to them. I grew up in the 90s, so the big one for me was Scream, Wes Craven’s brilliant meta movie that managed to be scary while poking fun at the formulaic tropes that had developed over the years.

Werewolf movies are hard to get right. The creature design and transformation sequences are crucial to the success of these films, yet both are notoriously expensive to render. As such, there are a handful of classic lycanthrope pictures that we keep going back to, but few recent efforts seem to stand the test of time.
With that said, there are at least a handful of contemporary werewolf films that get more right than wrong. At least one such example seems to have flown largely under the radar thanks to a lackluster showing at the box office.
I’m talking about The Cursed. The film, which sometimes gets mistaken for Wes Craven’s Cursed, plays out like this: In 19th-century France, a man arrives in a remote country village to investigate an attack by a wild animal. However, he soon discovers a much deeper and sinister force that has the manor...

One major sequel to a classic comedy leads this list, but there’s plenty more to stream beyond the Sandler-verse.
Netflix’s long-running deal with Adam Sandler is finally starting to pay off in a big way. With the massive release of “Happy Gilmore 2,” the streamer has gone all-in on Sandler nostalgia, and I’m all here for it. The original “Happy Gilmore” would’ve landed on this list too, but it’s getting pulled on July 31st. Still, Sandler shows up more than once below, and he’s not the only reason to hit play. This list has a little bit of everything: horror, thrillers, action, and comedy — the kind of lineup that reminds you why Netflix is the biggest dog in the streaming world. So, here are the top seven movies streaming on Netflix right now.

How deeply "Together" gets under your skin likely correlates with your relationship status. For the single, it's an outlandish, absurd romp with characters seemingly being punished by an otherworldly threat for the crime of being a little co-dependent. It's literally messy, it's twisted, and it's oddly delightful — kind of like a first date you're relieved never turned into a second, but which makes for a great story to tell at parties. If you're in a new relationship, it feels like a cautionary tale about the dangers of codependency, but if you're someone who has been in a committed relationship, "Together" is disgustingly romantic. One of the best-reviewed horror films of 2025, writer/director Michael Shanks' "Together" wisely elected to cast Alison Brie and Dave Franco — a real-life couple — to play the couple at the center of its story.

Before he won an Oscar for playing the father of the atomic bomb in Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy was tormenting Rachel McAdams on a red-eye flight to Miami. Two decades later, that nightmare fuel of a thriller – Wes Craven’s Red Eye – is enjoying a major resurgence. The 2005 film has been climbing Netflix’s viewership charts and will now join Paramount+ on August 1. With an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Red Eye remains one of the tightest and most stylish thrillers of the mid-2000s. Produced on a modest $25 million budget and grossing nearly $100 million globally, the movie was directed by horror legend Wes Craven, best known for A Nightmare on Elm Streetand Scream. Red Eye was a rare venture outside the horror genre for Craven, who only made two more films before his death in 2015.

Kane Hodder, the icon responsible for giving life to Friday the 13th's slasher killer Jason Voorhees on numerous occasions, has revealed again that he almost played yet another very important character in horror cinema. Hodder is no stranger to the horror game outside the Friday the 13th franchise, having played characters such as Victor Crowley in the Hatchet film series, as well as Leatherface of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame during stunt work. However, he has confirmed once again what he has addressed in the past: Hodder almost gave life to none other than A Nightmare on Elm Street''s Freddy Krueger.
As reported by Bloody Disgusting, Hodder was on the podcast Talks From the Crypt, where he spoke about his long career in horror. Hodder's early career was in stunt work, and during a demonstration that went horribly wrong, Hodder was left with burns all over his body. However,...

Few people have done more to lead comic books from cinematic punchline to box-office dominance than Michael E. Uslan, who spent a decade trying to sell Hollywood on a dark, serious version of Batman. For the producer and Warner Bros., the eventual reward was Tim Burton’s 1989 hit “Batman,” followed by producing credits on dozens of Dark Knight projects over the last 35 years.
Uslan’s perspective thus seems particularly relevant at a pivotal moment for the superhero movie, which is seeking a resurgence behind “Superman” and “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” with the promising opening for the former suggesting the process might be at least partway there. The longtime producer, after all, has seen his fair share of boom and bust periods for the genre.

Universal and Blumhouse are making the dreams of Scream fans everywhere come true today by announcing that Skeet Ulrich will reteam with his on-screen bestie, Matthew Lillard, for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. The news comes on the morning of the movie’s big panel at Sdcc and was paired with the official trailer debut, so we can’t wait to see what other tricks and treats they have in store for those in attendance at the yearly gathering. The announcement marks a major horror icon reunion, as Ulrich and Lillard previously appeared alongside one another in Wes Craven’s 1996 feature, Scream — the movie that would start a franchise. As of right now, it isn’t clear which character Ulrich will be joining as, but perhaps we’ll find out more later today.
The big reveal comes after months of speculation that Ulrich would appear in the eagerly-anticipated sequel in one way or another.

I’m not usually a horror movie guy, but I can handle a good slasher. Over the weekend, I watched the reboot “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and it totally scratched that itch. It’s not reinventing the genre or anything, but it’s a campy, violent, nostalgic ride that kept me guessing right up to the last scene. It got me thinking about how fun a great slasher can be when you’re in the right mood. The year was 1983. Kane Hodder was stunt doubling for John Bloom as The Reaper in Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes Part II. It was one year before Craven would alter the course of horror history with A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Craven had no idea that Hodder was about to change horror history in his own right, taking over the role of Jason Voorhees just five years later in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. He also had no idea that his latest creation was going to become a icon, but he at least had high hopes for the demonic Freddy Krueger.

Another week, another disappointing result for a horror sequel at the 2025 summer box office. Blumhouse and Universal Pictures recently had to suffer the misfire that was "M3GAN 2.0," which isn't going to make a third of what the original "M3GAN" did. But while it's not nearly as bad in the early going for Sony Pictures, the studio's "I Know What You Did Last Summer" legacy sequel opened in theaters over the weekend and, sad to say, it fell pretty far short of expectations as well.
"I Know What You Did Last Summer" opened to an estimated $13 million domestically over the weekend, coupled with $11.6 million overseas. That gives it a $24.6 million global start against a reported $18 million budget. That's by no means a disaster but considering that pre-release estimates had "Last Summer" taking in between $16 and $25 million in North America, that's a disappointment. The re-introduction of the once-popular '90s slasher...

In a surprising turn of events, the third week of July has resurrected Cillian Murphy‘s 20-year-old thriller, Red Eye, and propelled it to the Netflix Top 10 (via Tudum). Known for its bizarre and divisive plot, the psychological thriller has always been a polarizing talking point among Murphy’s fans. It is either considered a masterful work of edge-of-the-seat thrill or a clichéd delivery of cringeworthy plots and character arcs.
But Netflix is not exactly known to be niche about its taste in films (re: The Old Guard 2). As such, it is stranger still to see a brilliant work of storytelling from the talented Tina Fey get a premium spot as an original on the streaming platform. Starring a diverse cast of talented, award-winning actors, The Four Seasons is a breath of fresh air among other run-of-the-mill shows and films.

A couple weeks ago I completely blew somebody’s mind. We were talking about popular zombie movies and I mentioned that before Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later” was an unexpected hit in 2002, the zombie genre was considered, ironically, kinda dead. Sure, we got a zombie movie every once in a while, but outside of the hardcore horror fanbase, the walking dead wasn’t a concept most people cared about or took very seriously. This younger person found that concept hard to fathom. They had literally never known a world when zombies weren’t popular. It just goes to show you: One hit film really can revive a whole genre, and for generations to come.
The same holds true for slasher movies. After John Carpenter’s “Halloween” defined the genre in 1978 — it’s a stretch to say Carpenter “invented it” but he certainly codified the easy-to-copy, very successful formula — slashers...

When it comes to classic horror franchises, few are as iconic and timeless as A Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy has been the ghoul, the playful demon, the jokester, and the sadistic maniac. But for most viewers, he's the slasher killer that we can't help but cheer for whenever he does his usual stuff. Well, as it turns out, now we have something more to cheer about: Freddy is set to receive an awesome 4K release that'll bring your nightmares to life.

Fans are finally discovering an underrated horror movie from 2009, as it has become a streaming hit on HBO Max, 16 years after its initial release. While the merits of streaming services remain a debatable topic of discussion, there is no doubt that they offer a unique opportunity for older movies that fans may have missed the first time around.
When it comes to streaming services like HBO Max, the approach is a bit different because it is a service owned by a studio that prioritizes its own releases above almost all others when adding titles to the platform. However, this specific horror movie is a Universal Pictures release, which makes its success on HBO Max more impressive.

The Last House on the Left has entered HBO's streaming charts, drawing new audiences to the 2009 horror remake. The film is not for the squeamish, but fans of violent, explicit revenge movies will find it cathartic.
2009's The Last House on the Left is HBO's tenth most-streamed movie as of Jul. 18, per FlixPatrol this week. A remake of Wes Craven's 1972 revenge flick, The Last House on the Left followed the original's story beats; it also doubled down on the graphic violence. The film received mixed reviews but was a modest commercial success, grossing $46 million against a $15 million budget. It still ranks as one of the best horror remakes, despite its (gratuitous) depiction of torture and sexual violence.
Craven agreed to produce the remake if it improved on the original's pacing and scope. A bigger budget also allowed for more creative leeway, including bringing director Dennis Iliadis onboard. The film...

With the I Know What You Did Last Summer remake in cinemas, a tongue-in-cheek look at how much effort slasher killers put into their outfits – with a trophy for first place.
There’s an episode of Peppa Pig where all the parents completely forget to make a Halloween costume for their offspring, and so numerous little cartoon animals show up to a spook-themed party dressed almost identically. With a few winds of toilet roll, you have the ultimate low-effort outfit: an instant Egyptian mummy.
It’s a sad fact that many of horror cinema’s most prolific slasher killers are similarly slapdash in their clothing choices. They may have their victims fleeing in terror, but their sartorial efforts often begin and end with shoving on a mask.
There are other fictional murderers, however, that actually put some time and effort into their costumes; some are even downright flamboyant.

Although there has been growing enthusiasm for rising horror auteurs like Jordan Peele, Robert Eggers, Mike Flanagan, and Coralie Fargeat, no filmmaker has elicited quite as extreme of response as Ari Aster. While Aster’s talent was evident from some of his early, disturbing short films, his work within features has raised the threshold for upsetting content. There’s certainly an art to being transgressive for the sake of attention, but Aster has woven in delicate stories about human fragility and developed consistent working relationships with some of the industry’s finest actors. It’s far too early to judge whether Aster is the heir apparent to filmmakers like Tobe Hooper or Wes Craven, but he has earned enough name recognition that any of his upcoming projects has become an event worthy of anticipation.

"I Know What You Did Last Summer" holds a special place in the pantheon of horror — not for breaking new ground, but for being a prime example of late-'90s studio opportunism dressed up in blood and teen angst. Loosely adapted from Lois Duncan's ominously titled YA thriller that was a staple of every junior high library, the script was penned by at-the-time up-and-coming screenwriter Kevin Williamson. Unfortunately, the film didn't move the needle, and it was discarded by Columbia Pictures. But then Williamson teamed up with Wes Craven for "Scream," ushering in a slasher renaissance that had every studio in town desperate to cash in.
"Ikwydls" was hastily exhumed and rushed into production, now boasting the golden tagline "from the writer of 'Scream,'" which basically guaranteed a box office bloodbath. Even better, the production nabbed the lightning in a bottle ensemble casting of Jennifer Love Hewitt,...

“Nostalgia is overrated,” proclaims Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt). She’s just been through a convoluted domino of events and been thrust back into the town of Southport, which is laughably not anything like the North Carolina it is supposed to take place in. It’s an odd line; we’ve just watched 100 minutes of nostalgia-ridden dialogue. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s legacy sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer is nothing if not packed with direct references to its 1997 origin film, a vapid, utterly hollow husk of revival. And when it isn’t copy-pasting lines straight out of Hewitt’s mouth it resorts to an almost impressively high level of pandering to its Gen Z audience.
The whole thing begs the question, “Who is this even for?” Why are we making a legacy sequel to a slasher that has only remained relevant as a footnote to its far superior cultural touchstone,...

“Copycat” gets thrown around a lot when discussing the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, yet perhaps a more accurate descriptor is “opportunist.” The film was, in fact, rushed into production in light of Scream‘s success, but Kevin Williamson’s script dates farther back. And unlike Williamson’s first collaboration with Wes Craven, I Know What You Did Last Summer channeled traditional slashers rather than deconstructed them.
Despite a straightforward approach in a postmodern era of horror, I Know ended up being fully digested by pop culture. Comedies Scary Movie and Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th spoofed the original film without mercy, MADtv conceived a Christmas-themed parody, and the direct sequel didn’t even take itself too seriously. Despite there being several genres that are often criticized for not having strong female characters, horror movies have been championing women as being able to outwit everything from face-hugging aliens to supernatural dream demons for decades. Now, as 90s “final girl” Jennifer Love Hewitt prepares to return to her role of Julie James in I Know What You Did Last Summer, the actor has shared a pitch of bringing together several iconic slasher survivors in one kick-ass crossover movie.
While speaking to ExtraTV at the premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer’s 2025 reboot, the actress was asked what “final girl” crossover she would love to see happen, and said:
“I mean I would have to go to Jamie Lee Curtis. But I feel like a Julie James, Sydney [Prescott], Halloween, like one final girl movie where they all come together to take someone out. That would be bomb.

A lot of casual fans missed it, but the first "Scream" film featured a surprise appearance from the director himself, Wes Craven. In the scene where Principal Himbry (Henry Winkler) is alone at the high school and starting to suspect he might be the killer's next victim, he gets spooked out by the appearance of the school's harmless janitor. Himbry apologizes, moves on, and the janitor is never seen or heard from again.
Most viewers understood the biggest reference in the scene, which is that the janitor's dressed up in an outfit very similar to Freddy Krueger's, but fewer noticed that the janitor's actor was Craven himself. I, for one, was too busy thinking, "Wait, is Principal Himbry played by the Fonz?" to notice either of those two winks to the audience on first viewing.
