There are some stories in the history of film that end up being repeated over and over again. Some of these are just simple categories like vampire, werewolf, and zombie films. Some of them get a little more granular and specific like the story of Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. While King Kong and Phantom of the Opera probably have the most, Invasion of the Body Snatchers has the most consistent offerings. The 2007 iteration was a bust but the other 3 are all incredibly solid. With the 90s version turning 30 we thought it was worth seeing if it was a generic...

This week’s streaming picks will have you seeing double. Doppelgangers are inherently terrifying, or at the very least alarming, for a variety of reasons. In mythology, a doppelganger often acts as a foreboding harbinger of bad news or luck. On a biological level, there’s something unsettling about the discovery of an unrelated person or entity sharing your face.
Then there’s the matter of identity theft, something horror exploits when it comes to doppelgangers. It’s eerie enough to see what appears to be your clone in the wild, but it’s a whole new level of scary when they attempt to take over your entire existence as their own.
This week’s streaming picks highlight the perils of doppelgangers.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Martin Brest's "Scent of a Woman" was one of the most critically acclaimed films of 1992. Powered by an emotionally raucous screenplay from the late, great Bo Goldman, it's probably best remembered 31 years later for the hoo-hahing performance showcase that earned Al Pacino the Best Actor Oscar he should've won for, take your pick, "The Godfather Part II," "Serpico" or "Dog Day Afternoon." This is unfair. The film does run a tad long, and concludes with a conventional stand-up-and-cheer monologue from Pacino, but the length is excusable because Brest gives his best moments, most of which arrive during the film's second act, an abundance of oxygen. He lets his actors explore, which was catnip for Pacino and a blessing for his 22-year-old co-star Chris O'Donnell.

This week brings the release of M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin, an adaptation of author Paul Tremblay’s The Cabin at the End of the World. The premise sees a vacationing family held hostage by four armed strangers that make harrowing demands under the claimed threat of an apocalypse.
This week also continues HBO’s compelling “The Last of Us,” an apocalyptic series based on the video game. The fourth episode will air this Sunday on HBO and HBO Max. Naturally, it feels apropos to continue the apocalypse theme in this week’s streaming picks.

Upon reflection, there couldn't be two '90s Hollywood studio films that are more opposite than Barry Sonnenfeld's "Addams Family Values" and Robert Zemeckis' "Forrest Gump." Both released in the mid-1990s (although the novel "Forrest Gump" was released a decade before making it to the big screen), the two films might represent the ends of an anarchist spectrum. On the one hand, the Addams family is a creepy bunch of murderers who live in a strange haunted mansion, and who take delight in the misery of others. They live far out on the fringe and they love it. They spray blood on people, pour boiling oil on Christmas carolers, and, in the famous climax of "Values," kill off all the counselors at a summer camp.
"Forrest Gump," meanwhile, is a cube of American cornpone about the Rockwellian nature of old American institutions. "Forrest Gump" argues that the inside was the place to be,...

Happy Friday, dear readers! While time might feel like a bit of a flat circle right now, the weekend is officially upon us once again, and I don’t know about you, but these days, movies are providing a very much-needed distraction. With that in mind, I thought I’d put together a list of horror and sci-fi movies that were released throughout the 1990s that you can currently stream for free on a variety of platforms like Vudu, Tubi TV, Crackle, Pluto TV, and IMDb TV.
I just figured we often spend a lot of time celebrating genre movies from the 1980s, so it was time to give the ’90s their due, and there are a lot of great movies from that era that you can currently watch for free via streaming.
Stay safe, stay healthy and happy streaming!

"If a life needs to be traded for Lucy, take mine." And just like that, Victoria Belfrey has left the building, folks. As Once Upon a Time returned tonight to kick off the second half of its now final season, the character we believed to be this season's big bad, Gabrielle Anwar's Victoria (aka Lady Tremaine and also Rapunzel because why not?), has proven to have a bit of hero in her as well. After putting her granddaughter Lucy (Alison Hernandez) under a sleeping curse to bring her beloved daughter Anastasia (Yael Yurman) back, she realized the error of her ways once Gothel (Emma Booth) set about to sacrifice her other daughter Ivy (Adelaide Kane) to undo it. Proving to her beleaguered...

It's time to wish upon a star for a happy ending. The Once Upon a Time TV show will end after seven seasons on ABC. Last month, during TCA winter press tour, ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey said she was "cautiously optimistic" about a season eight renewal. While no one is outright saying Once Upon a Time is cancelled, it is ending, and the network seems to have made the decision, not creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. An ABC fairy tale drama, the seventh season of Once Upon a Time stars original cast members Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle, and Colin O’Donoghue, alongside newcomers Andrew J. West, Gabrielle Anwar, Dania Ramirez, Alison Fernandez, and Mekia Cox. It is a reboot of the story fans watched during the series’ first six installments, which also featured Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, with Ginnifer Goodwin...

ABC is pulling the plug on “Once Upon a Time” after seven seasons. Co-creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis had tried to take the fantasy show in a new direction this year after losing most of the original cast. While hard-core fans followed “Ouat” from its traditional Sunday time slot to Friday, the audience was not large enough to merit renewal by the Alphabet network.
This reboot built on the season 6 two-hour finale, which had introduced two new characters including a young man who has lost hope and now lives as a recluse (Andrew J. West) and his daughter Lucy (Alison Fernandez) who has her own book of fairy tales. He was a grown-up version of Henry (Jared Gilmore), the boy whose search for his birth mother Emma (Jennifer Morrison) to the dismay of his adoptive mother Regina (Lana Parrilla) kicked off the series back in 2011.

Twelve Unsinkable Facts for Titanic’s 20th AnniversaryTwelve Unsinkable Facts for Titanic’s 20th AnniversaryKurt Anthony12/19/2017 10:00:00 Am
“It’s been 84 years….”
Actually, it’s been 20 years! James Cameron’s record-breaking blockbuster Titanic celebrates its 20th anniversary today and we know you’re frozen with excitement.
A chilling tale of romantic disaster, Titanic combines the fictitious love story of Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) with the untimely fate of the R.M.S. Titanic, one of history’s most famous ships.
Originally an elaborate plan to obtain funding for deep-sea filming expeditions, Cameron has stated that he made Titanic because he wanted to dive to the real wreck. As the writer, director, co-producer, and co-editor of the film, Cameron ended up spending more time with the ship than its actual passengers.
Filmed on a production budget of $200M, Titanic was the most expensive movie ever made at the time.

Is “Once Upon a Time” channeling Donald Trump with its Season 7 antagonist? The ABC drama kicked off its latest run last week with a premiere that introduced viewers to Victoria Belfrey (Gabrielle Anwar), the alter ego of Cinderella’s stepmother who threatens to close down Roni’s (Lana Parrilla) bar in the present day. Series co-creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz spoke to TheWrap about whether they intended for the villainous Victoria to have any parallels to the real-estate mogul who currently occupies the Oval Office. “The show is not attempting to mirror current events in any direct way,” Horowitz said.
