Kieran Culkin took home the win for best supporting performance at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
Presented by Kathryn Hahn, Culkin won the honor for his work in Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, marking his first Spirit Award ever. Culkin — who is starring in Glengarry Glen Ross, which opens March 10 on Broadway — was not present at the Spirit Awards in Santa Monica on Saturday, but Hahn accepted the award on his behalf.
His win at the 2025 Spirit Awards came a little over a month after he won the award for best supporting actor at the 2025 Golden Globes. Culkin, too, became a first-time Oscar nominee this year with a nod in the same category for his portrayal of Benji Kaplan in A Real Pain.

With nearly 60 years on the air, dozens of shows and films, books, and video games stretching as far as the eye can see, you'd think everyone would have seen at least one thing from the franchise. Right? A favorite show, a favorite movie; something, anything. Yet there are some who have never engaged with the franchise before coming on to work for them.
That's the case for Carol Kane, who plays the beloved Chief of Engineering Pelia. She is a Lanthanite, which means Kane's career is nearly immortal. Their species does not have short life spans, in fact, quite the opposite. Aside from The Q and other god-like beings of nature, the Lanthanite are likely the longest-living corporeal species in the Star Trek mythos.
Yet, despite having thousands upon thousands of years of life afforded to them, Kane herself has never been able to find time to watch Star Trek.

Fernanda Torres and Karla Sofía Gascón made history on Thursday as the first pair of Best Actress Oscar nominees for non-English language performances in nearly 50 years. Torres stars in Sony Pictures Classics’ I’m Still Here from Brazil, while Gascón leads in Netflix’s Emilia Pérez from France. This marks the fourth time two actors have been nominated for non-English roles for different movies in the same year. They will compete against Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Demi Moore (The Substance). Both films are cited for Best International Feature and Best Picture while Emilia Pérez became the most-nominated international movie with 13 mentions.
In the Walter Salles‘ political biopic, Torres portrays Portuguese-speaking human rights activist Eunice Paiva, who searches for her missing husband, politician Rubens Paiva, during the Brazilian Military Dictatorship in 1971. What do Kim Novak, Jim Carrey, John Turturro, and the late Donald Sutherland all have in common? Well, aside from being acclaimed actors, these stars have never (we repeat: never) been nominated for an Academy Award. And that crime is now being celebrated by the annual anti-awards season festival, hosted by the Museum of the Moving Image.
The beloved museum announced its third iteration of the popular “Snubbed” screening series, which reexamines films that have been overlooked by the Academy. The 2025 theme is centered on actors and titled “Snubbed Forever: Great Actors, No Nominations.” The program will run February 1 through March 9, and feature 21 films starring actors who have never been nominated for an Oscar.
Highlights include Kim Novak in the enduring “Vertigo,” John Turturro and John Goodman in “Barton Fink,” Rita Hayworth in “The Lady from Shanghai,” Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and Danny DeVito in “Batman Returns.

Men in suits of armor. Courtly romance. Raging bouts of plague and pillaging. All these and more are the hallmarks of a good old-fashioned medieval movie. So many of our most enduring legends have their start in the Middle Ages, from King Arthur and Knights of the Round Table to Robin Hood, and for good reason -- their classic tales of adventure and noble battles for justice have won over audiences for hundreds of years.
Although adventures are never in short supply, whether our heroes are off fighting in the Crusades, waging a seemingly endless war in France over the right to rule France, or battling smaller tyrannies on the home front, films set in medieval times aren't just limited to the action genre. I consider myself something like a student, autodidact or otherwise, of cinema and––even still, must confess––had not ever grasped the concept of Argentine noir. Credit to Criterion Channel, who’ll expand my horizons with February’s program (concisely titled “Argentine Noir”) that includes one known title––Pierre Chenal’s Native Son, an Argentine film from a French director adapting an American novel about the African-American experience in Chicago––and five I look forward to discovering. Retrospective-wise, their wide-reaching Claudette Colbert program could double as a lesson in Old Hollywood, between Capra, Stahl, DeMille, Lubitsch, Sirk, and Sturges. February, of course, brings Black History Month and Valentine’s Day: the former engenders a series featuring films such as Nothing but a Man, Portrait of Jason, and Losing Ground; the latter brings “New York Love Stories,” from Carol to Crossing Delancey to, curiously, Annie Hall, which likely would not have...

Carol Kane received her first awards nomination 50 years ago next year. It was a big one, too; after just five years in film, working with directors of the caliber of Mike Nichols and Hal Ashby, Kane was feted by the Academy for her starring role in Joan Micklin Silver’s period drama Hester Street, a film she made in 1975 alongside Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon. Primetime Emmy awards followed in the early ’80s, for James L. Brooks’ hit show Taxi, in which she played the wife of Andy Kaufman’s character Latka Gravas.
Awards-wise, Kane has simmered throughout her career while never quite boiling over. Instead, she focused on the work—as a young actress, she caught the tail end of the New Hollywood of the ’60s, and then quite effortlessly segued into the commercial studio mainstream of the ’80s, making Scrooged in 1988 with Bill Murray. Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
When reflecting on any year in movies, the theatrical experience rings most memorable. From driving across the border to Ohio with friends to watch No Country for Old Men in 2007, to a 35mm screening of Stalker at the Wexner Center for the Arts in 2011, with so rapt an audience I was terrified to swallow for fear it would disrupt their experience—each year holds it own special memories and 2024 was no different. There was a lively afternoon matinee of Between the Temples in which I was the youngest present by about 25 years, and a sold-out Wednesday screening of Showgirls at the Academy Museum with Elizabeth Berkley in person. But judging from reactions on X.com, I’m not alone in my favorite 2024 theatrical screening being witnessing Interstellar in 70mm IMAX.

Adrien Brody, Sean Baker, Brady Corbet, and Jim Jarmusch were among the winners and presenters at Wednesday’s New York Film Critics Circle dinner to offer words of support and sympathy to the thousands of Los Angeles residents impacted by this week’s deadly wildfires.
Brody, who won Best Actor for his acclaimed performance in The Brutalist, was overcome with emotion as he accepted the honor.
“To accept something like this when there’s so much suffering in the world. My heart goes out to all the families and the animals and our colleagues,” Brody said while fighting back emotion.“Most of the homes on the west side, the beach side of the [Pacific Coast Highway], are gone. From the Palisades on, this is our community. So I just want to thank and commend the bravery of the first responders, their sacrifices, and their meaningful work, which deserves our recognition tonight.”

Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" was first published in 1843. It was an instant success, quickly and deeply branding itself into the British consciousness. The story became widely spread, and soon other enterprising authors were eager to jump on Dickens' coattails; as early as 1844, "A Christmas Carol" was adapted to the stage no less than three times. After Dickens himself finished writing "David Copperfield" in 1853, he began giving live readings of a truncated version of his tale. He then proceeded to read the story for live, paying audiences every year for the next 17 years.
The story of "A Christmas Carol" follows a wealthy miser named Ebenezer Scrooge who ... Wait, what am I doing? You know the story of "A Christmas Carol." It's one of the most famous, enduring, and otherwise repeated stories in the history of Western literature.

The Dead Don't Die includes many characters who die after the small sleepy town of Centerville is invaded by zombies. The cast of The Dead Don't Die comprises an ensemble of renowned actors such as Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Danny Glover, and Adam Driver, who bring director Jim Jarmusch's story to life. At its core, The Dead Don't Die is an enjoyable zombie movie. However, the elements of comedy in the film make it a parody of the genre.
Released in 2019, Adam Driver's zombie film has recently seen a resurgence after being added to Netflix. The Dead Don't Die was launched to the top of Netflix's rankings once it was readily available to widespread audiences. Despite The Dead Don't Die being a comedy, it still features the violence and gore that is often seen in zombie movies, making for an entertaining and dark combination of genres.

The hosts of “The View” have officially gone home for the holidays — well, maybe not home, but they’ll fill us in on the specifics when they return — which means there are no new episodes of the ABC talk show this week. But when exactly will they return?
Each year, the hosts are given a few weeks off between seasons, which is usually in the summer, and then a few weeks off for the holidays. This year, their final episode before the holiday break was on Friday, December 20. Now, they’re off until the new year.
That said, don’t expect them back immediately after New Year’s Day. The women actually have the whole week off, with encore broadcasts airing through January 3. That means the first new episode of the year will air on Monday, January 6.

What’s Christmas without “A Christmas Carol”? There’s a reason why Charles Dickens’ classic has been made over and over: It’s always timely to remind people of the real spirit of the season. And to not be a selfish jerk. Here are our favorite versions of “A Christmas Carol,” from various Disney takes to the one everyone agrees is the best adaptation ever.

A year where the most celebrated films are as diverse as “Wicked,” “The Brutalist” and “Smile 2” is a year movie-lovers are going to remember for a long time. The industry’s and the audience’s acceptance of wildly disparate films allowed for a host of memorable, unique performances in 2024 that challenged the norms of motion picture performance and gave many actors their most iconic roles to date.
It’s hard to narrow down all the greats; by the time this retrospective was already getting out of hand, it became clear that some wonderful turns were somehow, despite their brilliance, not going to make the cut. But these are the performances that stood out amongst the standouts, in some of the best — and arguably one or two of the worst — movies of the 2024.

There is something foundational about Carol Kane. She was part of the fabric of late 20th Century arts and entertainment, whether it be in films like “Dog Day Afternoon” and “The Princess Bride” or on television in her Emmy-winning performance on “Taxi” as wife to Andy Kaufman’s Latke. In transitioning into the 21st century, not only did her strengths become more amplified — her trademark quirkiness adding dynamism to movies such as “The Pacifier” and shows like “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” — but her range continues to become more pronounced. In the last decade alone she’s taken part in a western from Jacques Audiard (“The Sisters Brothers”), a zombie comedy from Jim Jarmusch (“The Dead Don’t Die”), and will soon be seen in Darren Aronofsky’s ’90s-set crime thriller “Caught Stealing” as a character she recently told IndieWire “only spoke Yiddish.”

Often, the first taste of an upcoming film or television show is by way of its poster. For some films, such as “Jaws” or “The Silence of the Lambs,” a poster can in fact become entwined with its legacy and pave the way for an entire brand to be built. Making a strong first impression with an audience can be tantamount to a project’s success, but how does one capture the essence of an entire story in just one image?
For some, like Nathan Silver’s religious dramedy “Between the Temples,” the key is all in the title. Highlighting the film’s central duo, played by Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane, the two posters for the film feature the heads of both stars mirrored against one another. In this simple, yet unique positioning, the offbeat nature of the entire film, as well as the connection between the two main characters is communicated effortlessly,...

While many are giving attention to the opinion of original Broadway Elphaba and Glinda, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, plenty of people having starred in the stage production of “Wicked” and want to share their excitement over the new film adaptation, including “The Princess Bride” and “Between the Temples” star Carol Kane. Between 2005 and 2013, Kane took on the role of mentor and devious manipulator Madame Morrible for the national tour of “Wicked,” as well as on Broadway and in Los Angeles.
Speaking in a recent interview with IndieWire related to her recognition from the New York Film Critics Circle as Best Supporting Actress for “Between the Temples,” Kane reflected on her time in the role and shared her appreciation for this new interpretation, particularly the work of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the lead roles.

While Bill Murray’s Scrooged has become required holiday viewing, it wasn’t universally beloved upon its release in 1988. Noted film critic Roger Ebert, for one, wasn’t a fan.
“Scrooged is one of the most disquieting, unsettling films to come along in quite some time,” Ebert wrote in his scathing one-star review. “It was obviously intended as a comedy, but there is little comic about it, and indeed, the movie’s overriding emotions seem to be pain and anger. This entire production seems to be in dire need of visits from the ghosts of Christmas.”
Bad reviews are part of the business, but that doesn’t mean Murray couldn’t question them. Two years later, Murray was scheduled for a sit-down with Ebert to discuss his directorial debut, Quick Change, according to Far Out.

For our most comprehensive year-end feature, we’re providing a cumulative look at The Film Stage’s favorite films of 2024. We’ve asked contributors to compile ten-best lists with five honorable mentions––many of those personal selections will be shared in coming weeks in separate features––and from tallied votes has this top 50 been assembled.
Without further ado, check out out the best in 2024 cinema below, our ongoing year-end coverage here, and return in the coming weeks as we look towards 2025.
50. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (George Miller)
While Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earned less than its predecessor at the box office, it was no less creatively satisfying. There should be little hesitation in calling Fury Road one of the greatest action films of all time (if not the greatest); all the more impressive that George Miller had it in him to make Furiosa even more epic.

In 1982, 76-year-old Henry Fonda finally won a long-overdue Best Actor Oscar trophy, becoming the oldest Best Actor winner up to that time. His last acting nomination had been in 1941, and he held the record for the longest span between acting nominations until 2023. Judd Hirsch broke Fonda’s 41-year record 41 years after it was set, earning his second supporting nomination for “The Fabelmans” 42 years after his bid for “Ordinary People.” Now, one of his former co-stars could possibly break that record.
Hirsch earned two Best Comedy Actor Emmys for the sitcom “Taxi” (1978-1982). Carol Kane co-starred on the series from 1980-1983, also earning two Emmys, one for lead and one for supporting comedy actress. She is now receiving rave reviews for her role in “Between the Temples,” and might be on track to break the record Hirsch broke two years ago. “I have to say I’m stunned. I haven’t been able to make it real in my mind yet,” reflects Carol Kane on her recent awards nominations and wins for the film “Between the Temples.” The veteran star received the Supporting Actress prize from the New York Film Critics Circle and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Supporting Performance for her turn in the Nathan Silver movie, on which she also serves as executive producer. The recognition comes as a welcome surprise because, as she says, “It’s a unique experience at my age to get re-noticed, as it were.” Though she would prefer that she and her co-star Jason Schwartzman “were nominated for things together,” she remains “extremely grateful” and thinks the citations are “like a miracle.” Watch our complete video interview above.

Santa Claus is very much one of the main characters when it comes to the holiday, but some Christmas films feature people who aren't fond of Old St. Nick. Also known as Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, and many, many more, the big guy in red has cropped up in many a holiday celebration, and therefore, many a holiday movie. Whether he's the actual Santa from the North Pole, or simply a representation of the idea of the Christmas spirit, his presence is what adds to the magic of the season.
There have been plenty of characters in Christmas films that have ended up on the Naughty List who didn't believe in his existence or refused to embrace the meaning of the holiday. Whether they're robbing houses and stealing presents from right under the tree, or spoiling the fun for everyone around, there are definitely quite a few characters who need...

Star Trek is a major force in the world of science fiction and why wouldn't they be? They've either innovated many concepts that sci-fi properties embrace in the 21st century or helped popularize them. One of the unique things that the brand does that's pretty synonymous with science fiction troupes includes the retcon.
Be it through time travel or alien gibberish, Star Trek has always found ways to avoid dramatically changing things permanently. Maybe that's for the best, as the formula that Star Trek follows for their shows and films works. Essentially, you find a group of characters fans will pay to see (or watch week in and week out) and you throw everything you can think of at them.
What you don't do is permanently remove them from the equation. Nor, do you change up a show's concept so much that it changes the essence of what it is.

At this stage, the guild and Oscar voters haven’t seen much. They’ll be catching up over the holidays. What matters to all those well-paid awards campaigners is what they watch. Gone are the screener piles of yesteryear. Now, it’s the various guild and BAFTA and Academy portals, which still don’t have everything, as many distributors prefer to get their voters out to screenings.

This morning saw the announcements of the 40th edition of the Film Independent Spirit Awards. The big picture nominees include titles like the film festival darling The Substance, as well as Anora, which is getting high accolades for Mikey Madison‘s performance and Sean Baker’s writing and direction. A24 would naturally snag a ton of nominations that total a whopping 19. This beats last year’s 11-nomination count.
The Independent Spirit Awards will be taking place on Saturday, February 22, 2025, and is set to be held at Santa Monica beach. Former Saturday Night Live cast member Aidy Bryant will return as the host. The in-person ceremony will be available to stream live on IMDb and Film Independent YouTube channels, and across other social platforms.
