The After Dark Horrorfest was a game-changer back when it premiered in 2006. Not only was this film festival devoted to the horror genre, it was accessible. Founder Courtney Solomon (An American Haunting) chose the best possible venue for this “ultimate celebration of horror”: the big screen. So from November 17 to 21, these hand-picked titles were shown at select theaters across the U.S.

There have been four “sequels” to the After Dark Horrorfest since then, but for many horror hounds like myself, the original one is a bit more meaningful. It was an exciting time for discovery, developing one’s own taste, and for learning what the genre had to offer in the non-mainstream sector.

So in honor of this momentous film fest, we look back at the first “8 Films to Die For”.

Set in Paris, Nathalie Emmanuel plays Zee, an infamous assassin known as the Queen of the Dead.

Director John Woo has remade his iconic 1989 Hong Kong action film The Killer in America. Here’s the trailer.

John Woo is, of course, one of the forefathers of the modern action film, helping to create an entire subgenre known as Heroic Bloodshed.

From his earliest martial arts film Hand Of Death through the legendary Hard Boiled and The Killer to his underrated English language debut Broken Arrow and blockbusters like Face/Off and Mission: Impossible 2, Woo’s action sequences are as majestic as they are brutally balletic.

The Killer, released in 1989, followed Chow Yun-Fat as a troubled hitman who injures a singer during a bloody shootout. He must commit one last hit to raise the money for her operation, without which she will go blind. It’s often cited as one of the greatest action films ever made – if you’ve never had the pleasure, it really is incredible.

Syfy has announced its spring and summer slate of television series, including “Chucky” and “Reginald the Vampire.”

The network revealed the dates during NBCUniversal’s portion of the TV Critics Assn. winter press tour in Pasadena. The second half of Season 3 of “Chucky” will premiere April 10 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt. London-based Dneg is launching a studio in Sydney, Australia and has confirmed it has taken on the visual effects for George Miller’s Mad Max prequel feature Furiosa. Located in the city’s Tech Central district, it is slated to open its doors in early 2023 with a total capacity of 500. Academy Award winner Andrew Jackson is relocating from Dneg’s London office to his native Australia to run the operation as Creative Director. An Oscar winner for Christopher Nolan’sTenet, he also received an Academy Award nomination for his work on Mad Max: Fury Road. Besides acting as a full service VFX studio, Dneg Sydney will house a new studio for Dneg Animation, which was behind Kid Cudi’s animated love story Entergalactic for Netflix.

Very over the top, extremely brutal and as French as a Johnny Hallyday calendar – here’s a rerelease for the gonzo crime thriller from 1997, directed by Jan Kounen and adapted from the pulp policier series by Joël Houssin. The hyperactive pop video aesthetic has dated a bit, and the crash zooms and the extreme close-ups are tiring, but there’s no doubting the ultraviolent, ultratasteless energy of it all: the movie gives the finger to all those arthouse wimps who might be thinking about wrinkling their noses and objecting to this film.

Set in the early 1970s in North Carolina, “Uncle Frank” won best film, best creator and best actor for Paul Bettany who stars as a gay man forced to confront the Southern family to whom he’s stayed closeted.

“It’s a Sin,” a British series created by Russell T Davies (“Years After Years”), won best series and best actress for Lydia West. The series was produced by Red Production Company for Channel 4 and HBO Max, in association with All3media International.

Finland’s “Piece of My Heart,” a musical romantic series with Malin Akerman, took home the Jury Special Prize. The News awards were given to “ITV News: Inside the US Capitol” for best news coverage; “The Diagnosis: Covid-19” for best news documentary; “Citoyen Nobel” for best documentary.

HBO Max, the streaming-video hub of WarnerMedia, has acquired anticipated Studiocanal title “Possessions,” a psychological thriller series created by Shachar Magen (“Sirens”) and directed by BAFTA-nominated Thomas Vincent (“Bodyguard”).

As an international Max Original, the series will be made available on the U.S. streaming platform in December.

Commissioned for Canal Plus’s Creation Original and Israel’s Yes TV, the series was shot in Israel in French, Hebrew and English. The show was produced by Caroline Benjo, Barbara Letellier, Simon Arnal and Carole Scotta from the leading Paris-based production company Haut et Court TV, whose credits include “No Man’s Land” and “The Returned.” Eilon Ratzkovsky, Osnat Nishri and Keren Misgav Ristvedt from Israel’s Quiddity (“Sirens”) co-produced the series.

The Fantasia International Film Festival will launch its 24th edition next month as an exciting virtual event composed of scheduled live screenings, program library, panels, and workshops, taking place from August 20th to September 2nd, 2020. In the social distancing era of Covid-19, Fantasia International Film Festival is coming online with a virtual edition taking place August 20th–September 2nd. Glen Ballard, best known for co-writing Michael Jackson’s Man In The Mirror and producing Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill, walked into Alan Poul’s office in 2013 and told the Six Feet Under and Tales of the City exec producer that he wanted to make a show about a jazz club in contemporary Paris.

Six years later, that show, The Eddy, is debuting on Netflix.

“It was a very unusual genesis,” Poul tells Deadline. “Glen left me with a CD with a dozen songs on it. I listened to them and they blew me away. Half of those songs are in the first season of The Eddy.”

Poul subsequently went to see the band that Ballard put together, in venues such as The No Name on Fairfax a few times and one of those times brought Damien Chazelle, whose feature Whiplash had premiered at Sundance but had not yet been released theatrically yet.

Netflix has released the trailer for Damien Chazelle’s upcoming series “The Eddy,” and it follows the story of a once-popular musician whose Parisian jazz club is in trouble.

Produced by All3Media’s Two Brothers Pictures, Season 2 was filming in Budapest, Hungary, but production has been suspended for an unspecified period of time after the country introduced shutdown measures on Monday.

There’s so much talent involved in the production of Mary Magdalene, you know it would only sit on the shelf for so long. Caught up in the dissolution of The Weinstein Company, it now hits theaters this week, a year or so after when it was figured to arrive. For some, this will be a must see curiosity.
