From Barfly to Butcher: Revisiting George Wendt’s ‘Masters of Horror’ Episode
Image
George Wendt is best known for playing a regular at the bar where everybody knows your name. Yet other than Norm on Cheers, I mostly — and fondly — remember the late Wendt for two of his horror roles. Firstly, it’s hard to forget him as the nosy neighbor in 1985’s House; playing opposite William Katt, Wendt’s supporting character offered much-appreciated laughs in that rather tense horror-comedy. Then over a decade after closing out his tab on Cheers, Wendt landed not only a part in the anthology series Masters of Horror, he was, on this somewhat rare occasion, actually playing the lead.

After delivering the first season oddball “Deer Woman,” director John Landis returned with the more straightforward yet also comedic “Family.” This time, however, the story packed in some gruesome imagery and sick ideas that you wouldn’t normally associate with its star. It wasn’t until Stuart Gordon’s King of the Ants,...

The next Mike Flanagan horror series just got the green light
Image
Mike Flanagan is no stranger to horror with hits like The Fall of the House of Usher, The Haunting of Hill House, and Midnight Mass under his belt. He’s also no stranger to Stephen King’s works and has adapted multiple classics like Doctor Sleep, The Life of Chuck, and Gerald’s Game for both big and small screens. Now, the hit film and series maker will be collaborating with the famed horror author once again, this time to adapt the iconic story Carrie into a TV series. Prime Video has officially confirmed the series green light.

Flanagan opened a writers’ room in late fall as the series quickly began coming together, and the eight-episode project has been casting quietly, with relative newcomer Summer H. Howell (Hunter Hunter) in negotiations for the title character, Carrie White, and Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) set to play her nemesis, Sue Snell.

Carrie: Summer H. Howell Lands Title Role In Mike Flanagan's Stephen King Adaptation
Image
Mike Flanagan is set to re-team with Stephen King for a new small-screen adaptation of the legendary's author's first novel, Carrie, and the title role has now been cast.

Despite rumors that Hereditary star Milly Shapiro was in negotiations to play the lead, Variety is reporting that Summer H. Howell is "nearing a deal" to play troubled telekinetic teen Carrie White.

We had heard that Samantha Sloyan was being eyed to play Carrie's mother, Margaret White, but there's no mention of the character at all in this report.

At 20 years old, Howell is already something of a horror vet, having appeared in Child’s Play franchise films Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky, as well as Hunter Hunter, Spirit in the Blood, Time Cut, and Harland Manor.

The synopsis for this new adaptation reads: "A bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White (Howell), who has...

Hereditary Star Milly Shapiro Reportedly In Talks To Play Carrie In Mike Flanagan's Streaming Adaptation
Image
Last October, we got word that Mike Flanagan is set to re-team with Stephen King for a new small-screen adaptation of the legendary's author's first novel, Carrie, and we may now know who is in talks to play the lead roles.

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Hereditary star Milly Shapiro is in negotiations to play the title role of Carrie, with Samantha Sloyan eyed to play the tormented teen's mother, Margaret White.

Shapiro played Charlie Graham in Ari Aster's Hereditary, and a key scene involving the character will surely go down as one of the most shocking moments in horror movie history.

Flanagan and King - who recently collaborated on the upcoming The Life of Chuck - are developing the supernatural coming-of-rage tale as an eight-episode series for Amazon, with Flanagan on board as showrunner and exec producer.

Brian De Palma's 1976 take on the book is widely viewed...

Those films include the original 1976 Carrie, the 2013 remake of Carrie, and the 1986 coming-of-age drama Stand by Me. The 1976 version of Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek and John Travolta, is considered to be the best of the adaptations of King's 1974 horror novel. Video Interview: William Katt Discusses Paying Homage to Darren McGavin with His Audiobook Narration of Jeff Rice’s Kolchak: The Night Stalker Audiobook
Image
William Katt took a telekinetic date to the prom in Carrie, moved into a hellish home with a mind of its own in House, and flew into a billboard and lived to tell the tale in The Greatest American Hero. In an acting career spanning six decades, there's no doubt that William Katt has played memorable characters on both the stage and screen, but for his latest role, he's breathing new life into an iconic character by narrating the audiobook release of Jeff Rice's Kolchak: The Night Stalker novel, a seminal piece of initially unpublished fiction that became the basis for The Night Stalker, a made-for-tv movie starring Darren McGavin that thrilled and chilled enough viewers in 1972 to convince ABC to conjure up another TV film, The Night Strangler, before eventually leading to the short-lived yet beloved Kolchak: The Night Stalker TV series that ran from 1974–75.

Sophia Takal in Gabi on the Roof in July (2010)
Everything’s Coming Up Carrie!

January proved to be a busy, varied month on Horror Queers. We kicked off 2025 with a look at Sophia Takal’s examination of toxic friendships in Into the Dark: “New Year, New You” (listen), tackled Quentin Tarantino’s half of the Grindhouse double feature with Death Proof (listen), revisited George Waggner’s 1941 classic The Wolf Man (listen), then begged for Aylmer’s juice in Frank Henenlotter’s Brain Damage (listen).

To wrap up January, we’re taking Carrie White to prom in Brian De Palma‘s adaptation of Stephen King‘s debut novel, Carrie. 10 Horror Movie Villains That Could Have Been Totally Avoided
Image
When it comes to the genre of Horror as a whole, there tend to be several common characteristics from movie to movie. It's a safe bet to assume there will be suspense, jump scares, or over-the-top gore. However, regardless of any differences in plot, it is virtually guaranteed that one of the characters will make a string of poor decisions. The beloved Scary Movie films, which will gain another title in 2026 with Scary Movie 6, managed to build an entire franchise around this idea.

As frustrating as these stupid choices are, some don't hold a candle to others. In certain instances, a simple action could've completely changed the trajectory of the story and nullified the threat. These examples are typically present in films where the villain gains their power from some sort of summoning or ritual, or the ire of the villain could have been avoided through common decency. There...

Why the Original 'Carrie' Opening Scene Didn't Work and Was Changed
Image
In 1976, United Artists released a supernatural horror film that showed a very dark side of the high school experience. Carrie was its name, and with an ultra-gory execution of a very simple premise, it shook the entire nation. Mainly because the film touched on religious aspects that, at the time, were considered controversial. In Carrie, religion wasn't exactly a safe haven of prayer, faith, and kindness.

The film also put Stephen King's name in the spotlight. Then a 29-year-old horror author, King had published Carrie, his first novel, just two years prior in 1974, and it quickly became a paperback bestseller. Director Brian De Palma, known for his radical approach to cinema, read King's novel and went on a quest to adapt it. Lawrence D. Cohen, then a completely inexperienced screenwriter, was hired to adapt the epistolary novel into a feature film script.

Believe It Or Not: Remembering ‘The Greatest American Hero’
William Katt
Image Source: Amazon Back in 1981, superheroes weren’t dominating television like they are today. Surprisingly, there was only one live-action superhero show on the air—The Greatest American Hero. This series didn’t just stand out because it was alone in its lane; it earned its place with a blend of humor, heart, and a quirky twist on the superhero formula that set it apart. The show gleefully leaned into its lighthearted tone, playfully riffing on the classic superhero tales while riding the wave of the Superman movies success. While it never became a ratings juggernaut, it found another way to embed itself into pop culture. Its theme song, Believe It or Not, became an unexpected musical hit, soaring onto the pop charts and capturing the feel-good spirit of the show. At its core, the story centered on Ralph Hinkley, a regular, somewhat hapless school teacher who finds himself thrust...

Mike Flanagan Scares Up Another With Stephen King: ‘Carrie’ As An 8-Ep Amazon Series: The Dish

Exclusive: After scoring the big deal at the Toronto Film Festival with Neon for TIFF’s People’s Choice Award winner The Life of Chuck, director Mike Flanagan and Stephen King are right back at it. The Dish hears their next collaboration will be Carrie, this time in an eight-episode series for Amazon. Flanagan will be the showrunner.

The 1974 novel put the young author King on the map, and also bolstered his worth as an author whose genre storytelling was most translatable to the big screen. Brian De Palma was the first director to adapt King’s coming-of-age story of a young sheltered girl with a domineering mother whose bullying caused unimaginable blood-soaked consequences due to her hyperkinetic powers. This Cult Classic Black Comedy Has a New Streaming Home
Rose McGowan
Jawbreaker has found a new streaming home. The pitch-black 1999 teen comedy starring Rose McGowan and Judy Greer is coming to Peacock next month; it will be available on the service starting on October 1. Released in the winter of 1999, the film was the brainchild of filmmaker Darren Stein (The Boulet Brothers' Dragula), who wrote and directed the film. Inspired by the seminal dark high school comedy Heathers, the film is an examination of cruelty and depravity that lurk beneath the surface of teenage life. With a candy-colored production design and a soundtrack full of late-1990s indie pop, the film is a time capsule of the late Clinton Administration, and has retained a cult following. It features a number of teen stars of the past in small roles, including Carrie's William Katt and P.J. Soles, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's Tatyana Ali, and Grease's Jeff Conaway.

How Director Brian De Palma Created The Most Iconic Moment In The First Stephen King Movie
Image
In the 1970s, a guy named Stephen King was living in a trailer with his wife and two kids, struggling to make ends meet. By day, he worked as an English teacher at a high school in Maine. By night, he wrote pulpy short stories that he sold to men's magazines. King, being a guy, primarily wrote stories about guys. Then one day, a friend suggested he write about a female character for a change. So King sat down to write a short story about a girl with telekinetic powers. It wasn't easy: the story goes that King wrote about three pages and then threw the tale in the trash, only to be encouraged to finish it by his wife, Tabitha. Eventually, the story blossomed into a full novel. King would sell the manuscript to Doubleday, and by 1974, Stephen King's debut novel, "Carrie," hit bookshelves in hardcover.

Did you know that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid got a prequel? That's right, the legendary Western starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford returned... as a prequel. Only this time, our heroes were played by Tom Berenger and William Katt respectively, rather than the stars who made the first film great. Butch and Sundance: The Early Days may not compare to the original, but one thing that this follow-up was known best for was popularizing the term "prequel," a term that has a unique and complicated history.

Brian De Palma at an event for The Black Dahlia (2006)
Did ‘Carrie’ Give Birth to “Good For Her” Horror? [The Lady Killers Podcast]
Brian De Palma at an event for The Black Dahlia (2006)
“It has nothing to do with Satan, Mama. It’s me. Me. If I concentrate hard enough, I can move things”

Is it possible to go to prom these days without thinking about Carrie? Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel has become so ingrained in the zeitgeist that it’s nearly impossible to shop for a prom dress without a fleeting fear that it might become covered in blood. And perhaps that’s a good thing. Revolutionary at the time, the story concludes with a shocking act of righteous revenge, but mixed into the wreckage is a cautionary tale about bullying and religious abuse. Carrie may wield the fiery hand of justice in the film’s final act, but only after a lifetime of victimization at the hands of her classmates and mother. Maybe thinking about Carrie and the real life outcasts that share her...

Experience the Stephen King and Brian De Palma classic Carrie in Uhd! January 2024 release from Arrow Video
Image
Arrow Video’s January release is the 1970s horror masterwork Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek as a telekinetic title character. If you’ve got a taste for terror – make sure you grab Carrie on 4K Uhd from Arrow Video.

The release includes commentaries and visual essays, a wealth of interviews and archive featurettes, and comes in limited edition packaging, with a 40-page perfect bound book, a fold-out double-sided poster, six collector’s postcards!

In 1974, Stephen King published his first novel, the story of Carrie White, a troubled young girl, bullied by her peers and daughter to a fanatical fundamentalist mother, who discovers she has telekinetic powers. In 1976, it became the first of his works to be adapted for the big screen and, to this day, remains one of the very best.

Carrie marked Brian De Palma’s arrival as a major director, following smaller cult films such as Sisters, Phantom of the Paradise and Obsession,...

Mark Hamill Mistook George Lucas For Someone Else At His First Star Wars Audition
Image
There's a billion bits of "Star Wars" trivia out there, but one of my favorites is actually from before a single foot of film ran through the camera. You have to remember that, though "Star Wars" is a multi-billion dollar IP now, the original film barely got made. George Lucas had success with "American Graffiti," but this was a script that nobody in Hollywood understood, even Alan Ladd Jr., the Fox exec who gave the film a greenlight.

Lucas's world-building impressed most people, but they just didn't understand the technobabble jargon in a genre that was predominantly either super serious like "2001" or extra campy like "Barbarella." "Star Wars" existed somewhere between the two and that threw everybody, from studio execs to the actors auditioning for the movie, for a loop.

This was also an era pre-internet, so when Hamill went in to his first meeting for the role of Luke Skywalker...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Carrie
Image
Brian De Palma's "Carrie" was the film that defined a generation. Its blend of coming-of-age themes, fantastical magic, and slasher-style bloodshed makes it a genre-bending film that time just can't seem to forget.

The 1976 horror tells the story of a sheltered girl who lives under her obsessively religious mother's tyrannical rule, a dictatorship made all the worse by the onset of Carrie's period. Her mother's frenzy combined with a cruel prank at the prom pushes the shy young girl to a mental break, complete with telekinetic powers. The Stephen King adaptation launched some incredibly notable careers, including John Travolta, who plays high school bully Billy Nolan. Sadly, not all of the cast has lived to see the end of 2023, including Piper Laurie, whose performance as Carrie's mother earned her one of three Oscar nominations in her lifetime.

Laurie passed away in October of 2023, but many of the other main cast members are alive,...

Richard Moll, Original Night Court's Bull Actor, Dies At 80
Image
Richard Moll, known for his role as Bull on Night Court, has passed away at his home in California. Moll was one of the few original cast members to appear in all 193 episodes of Night Court, alongside John Larroquette and Harry Anderson. The cause of Moll's death has not been specified. He is survived by his two children and two stepchildren.

Night Court's Richard Moll has passed away. Moll was best known for playing the bailiff Aristotle Nostradamus "Bull" Shannon on the long-running wacky sitcom, which took place during the night shift at a Manhattan Criminal Court. The character, who is known for his catchphrase "Ooo-kay," has a gruff exterior that clashes with his gentle demeanor. Moll was one of just three of the show's stars (with John Larroquette and Harry Anderson) to appear on all 193 episodes of the show.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the original Night Court cast...

‘Pursuit’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Emile Hirsch, Jake Manley, Alexandria DeBerry, John Cusack, Andrew Stevens, William Katt, Elizabeth Faith Ludlow | Written by Brian Skiba, Ben Fiore, Dawn Bursteen | Directed by Brian Skiba

It took about ten minutes for me to realize that Pursuit was going to be an epic shitshow. That’s how long it takes to get to the first shootout. Between the overuse of slow motion, blood that looks like red paint and a pile of cash that explodes into the air for no apparent reason it’s more laughable than funny.

As it turns out Rick Calloway has just shot up an undercover police operation. Why? Because the same dealers the police were targeting apparently were involved in the disappearance of his wife. So, being an expert hacker he disabled the police cameras and went in shooting. After a chase through Little Rock pretending to be the Big Apple in which...

Carrie & Princess Leia Were Almost Played By The Other's Actor
Image
Carrie White and Princess Leia are two of the most famous and beloved female characters in film history, and they boosted the careers of their respective actors, who almost played the other's character. The 1970s saw the release of a variety of movies from different genres that have now become classics, and from the horror genre, one of the most notable titles is Brian de Palma's Carrie, while in the world of sci-fi, Star Wars started its reign.

Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, Carrie tells the story of Carrie White, a teenager carrying a lot of trauma due to years of abuse from her mother and who unleashes her telekinetic abilities against those who hurt her. A year after Carrie’s release, the audience was taken to a galaxy far, far away to meet Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia in Star Wars: A New Hope,...

Laverne & Shirley's Cindy Williams Could Have Played Princess Leia In Star Wars
Image
George Lucas' "Star Wars" (which eventually acquired the subtitle "Episode IV — A New Hope") transformed cinema in a myriad of ways when it blasted onto movie screens in the summer of 1977. The richly imagined tale of a young Tatooine farm boy who becomes the unlikely hero of a galactic rebellion sent kids staggering out of theaters with grandiose dreams of saving the universe. A mere two years after the end of the Vietnam War, America was hungry for a return to the righteousness of World War II flicks and John Wayne Westerns. "Star Wars," along with "Jaws" and "Rocky," spun that beautiful, aspirational lie. These characters — particularly the trinity of the naive hero, the strong-willed princess, and the charming rogue — were who we wanted to be.

Every age-appropriate actor in Hollywood wanted to be there, too, and Lucas cast the widest of nets to find the perfect Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia,...

“Roger Corman Presents”: Remember When Corman and Showtime Made Cult Cinema Together in the 1990s?
Image
For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.

Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.

Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. With the banner “Roger Corman Presents,” Corman and company...

Why William Hopper's Turn As Paul Drake On Perry Mason Remains One Of His Best Performances
Image
William Hopper, the actor who played the stalwart private detective Paul Drake on the hit 1957 legal drama "Perry Mason," was a notoriously prolific smoker, often seen with a cigarette hanging from his lips on camera. In 1970, Hopper suffered a stroke and succumbed to smoking-related health issues a month later. He was 55 years old.

As Paul Drake, Hopper was a cynic, a more grizzled presence built to balance Perry Mason's serious intellect. He was the Dr. McCoy to Perry Mason's Spock. For those unfamiliar with the series, "Perry Mason" was about a Los Angeles defense lawyer, played brilliantly by Raymond Burr, who was always careful to investigate the clients he was hired to defend. Typically, innocent people came to Mason, and he was always curious about the details of their case. Mason would always face off against the L.A. District Attorney Hamilton Burger (William Talman), who never won a case against him.

Celebrating 90 years of Perry Mason
Image
Erle Stanley Gardner’s brilliant and savvy criminal defense attorney Perry Mason has been on the case since 1933’s “The Case of the Velvet Claws.” The attorney describes himself in that first novel as a “lawyer who has specialized in trial work, and in a lot of criminal work…I’m a specialist on getting people out of trouble.”

Inspired by the famed Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Earl Rogers who only lost three of his 77 murder trials, Mason was featured in 82 novels and four short stories, six Warner Bros. murder mystery movies, a long-running radio series, the beloved 1957-66 CBS series starring Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale as his true-blue assistant Della Street, movies and a 1973-74 series with Monte Markham. Matthew Rhys (“The Americans” ) plays the latest incarnation in HBO’s stylish “Perry Mason” series, currently in its second season.

Set during the Great Depression, the HBO drama has a real “Chinatown” feel,...

The Greatest American Hero (1981)
The Greatest American Hero: Gone But Not Forgotten
The Greatest American Hero (1981)
The Greatest American Hero is a show that’s much beloved by folks of a certain generation. If you grew up in the seventies or eighties, the theme song is instantly iconic. In fact, the track “Believe it or Not” by Joey Scarbury actually made it all the way to the number 2 spot on the Billboard Charts. It was actually a bigger hit than the show itself, which only ran for two and a half seasons before being cancelled with five unaired episodes in early 1983. Yet, it remains part of the pop culture, with talk of rebooting it every now and then.

A reboot would definitely make sense given how obsessed people are with superheroes, with the red and black suit the hero wears iconic in its own way. The show starred cult horror icon William Katt (House) as Ralph Hanley, a teacher who’s endowed with superhuman abilities by aliens,...

5 Haunted House Horror Movies to Stream This Week

Haunted houses are a standard in horror for a reason. It’s not just the spectral invasion of our home that unnerves, but the unpredictability that comes with ghostly presences. A masked maniac can be stopped or temporarily subdued, but all bets are off in haunted houses.

This week’s “Stay Home, Watch Horror” streaming picks highlight the horror staple but not always in the way you’d expect. As always, here’s where you can watch them this week.

For more Stay Home, Watch Horror picks, click here.

Ghostwatch – Tubi

Upon initial airing, this made-for-tv movie stirred up controversy for the BBC, as its mockumentary style left viewers convinced what they’d just watched had been real. It plays like a live TV special with a camera crew on-site attempting to investigate the truth behind the most haunted house in the country. Neither they nor the viewer were prepared...

Sissy Spacek Thinks Her Carrie Performance Would Have Been Nothing Without Piper Laurie
Image
Brian De Palma's "Carrie" is arguably more of an important, relevant horror film today than it was during its original release in 1976. The character arc of Carrie White is one of the most shocking and severe transformations in cinema, and it remains just as powerful today. Carrie represents the bullied outcasts and the quiet masses who never feel any level of acceptance whatsoever. In a decade of legendary performances, Sissy Spacek's portrayal of Carrie remains one of the most memorable acting accomplishments of the seventies. It's tragically poignant at times, and then, eerily triumphant when she enacts her psychic revenge during the bloody, fireball finale.

In early roles, John Travolta, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen and William Katt play high school bullies who have no idea what's in store for them. Those interactions with the other actors surely put Spacek in the right headspace to play the victim. But...
