As we all know, the Marvel Cinematic Universe loves to save the best for last, just when everything appears to be said and done. Thanks to its post-credits scenes, we've seen the introduction of shocking heroes such as Nick Fury or discovered that big antagonists like Thanos were coming for the Infinity Stones. Fortunately, it seems Marvel will finally follow up on a loose end that has the potential to forever change the MCU as we know it.

Spider-Man is in safe hands with Marvel Studios but, in an effort to differentiate this web-slinger from those played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, some much-loved aspects of the character haven't really found their way into the MCU.

Following a recent rumor that Marvel Studios/Sony Pictures have been putting out the feelers for actors to play a villain and a new love interest for Tom Holland's Peter Parker in Spider-Man 4, we might be one step closer to finding out who will be stepping into the main antagonist role in the next solo Spidey movie.

According to Daniel Richtman, a "big actor" now has the offer to play the main villain in Spider-Man 4 (not the project's official title).

Unfortunately, we don't know the actor or the character, but a previous rumor has claimed that the movie will introduce a Spider-Man baddie we haven't seen in live-action before, which could narrow things down.

In related news, Deadline has confirmed that Zendaya will shoot Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Messiah adaptation before Spider-Man 4, which has led to speculation that the latter may not stick with its current July 24, 2026 release date.

As far as horror directors go, they don’t get much more influential than Sam Raimi. If he’d only made The Evil Dead trilogy, his place in the pantheon would be guaranteed, but he also made two kick-ass thrillers, A Simple Plan and The Gift, and – oh yeah – the original Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. After a brief return to superhero movie directing with Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (which made just under a billion dollars worldwide), Raimi is set for a return to horror with Send Help, which now has a January 30th, 2026 release date.

Most superhero films feature some kind of central romantic relationship, of course, but that doesn't mean they're always successful. In fact, more often than not, the "love interest" feels tacked-on or underdeveloped, and winds up being one of the worst aspects of the story.

There are a few exceptions, however.

Last we heard, Marvel and Sony's fourth solo Spider-Man movie was scheduled to begin shooting in late 2025, and we now appear to have confirmation (though filming could commence a little earlier than expected).

The organization founded by Tom Holland's parents, The Brothers Trust, has launched an online competition/giveaway, and the details reveal that cameras will roll on Spider-Man 4 in London this summer. This could still mean from September through to the autumn months, but there's a chance production might get underway sooner.

We know that Avengers: Doomsday is set to film in London next month, but, depending on the size of Holland's role (we've heard Spider-Man has much more to do in Secret Wars), the actor could conceivably shoot both projects back-to-back.

Willem Dafoe made his debut as the villainous Norman Osborn in 2002's Spider-Man, though the Green Goblin's story reached a definitive, comic-accurate end when he was impaled by his glider. 

Despite that, the actor reprised the role in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 as a spectre haunting his son, Harry. However, the franchise ended before Norman could follow in the footsteps of his comic book counterpart by returning from the dead (it's worth noting filmmaker Sam Raimi has never suggested a resurrection was planned).

Oh what a tangled web we weave when the multiverse becomes part of Spider-Man canon. The Spider-Man film franchise started simply enough, with 2002’s “Spider-Man.” Fast forward 20 years and three different actors have played live-action versions of the Wall Crawler, with the trio joining forces in 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

The most recent Spidey flick wasn’t just a fun family reunion. It also led to Marvel verifying the existence of the multiverse in its live-action productions. As the former Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange says in the film, “The multiverse is a concept about which we know frighteningly little.”

While the establishment of the multiverse has a still yet-to-be-determined impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in the present it can make watching Spider-Man movies in order a little complicated.

When Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios parted ways after Spider-Man: Far From Home, Sony executives immediately started making plans to continue the franchise without Kevin Feige's input.

We'll likely never know what that would have entailed. However, once both sides managed to get back on good terms, the wall-crawler found himself caught up in the Multiverse with 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. That led to the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective Peter Parker Variants, not to mention some familiar villains.

Sony tried to get in on the Multiversal action with Morbius. However, after cutting several confusing nods to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man franchise, the studio settled for one of the worst post-credits scenes ever which saw the Living Vampire meet The Vulture.

The idea of Venom fighting Spider-Man was teased but never followed up on and Sony has now given up on its slate of Marvel spin-offs.

2025 marks a whole new era for Captain America. Chris Evans stepped back from the role in 2019 following Avengers: Endgame, where his character Steve Rogers retired from being a superhero, handing the shield over to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). When fans debate who is the best Spider-Man, the contest is usually between the three movie star Spider-Men. You know, the Spider trio that shared the big screen in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" — Tobey Maguire (from the original Sam Raimi-directed "Spider-Man" trilogy), Andrew Garfield (from the "Amazing Spider-Man" films), and Tom Holland.

Each of these three Spider-Men have passionate champions, but "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" reminds us of how many more actors have given their voice to Peter Parker. The new series' Spider-Man voice, Hudson Thames, has gotten himself into hot water for using the anti-diversity dog whistle "Woke" to describe what "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" isn't. Some fans have even suggested, with varying degrees of seriousness, that the show should recast Thames with one of the trusted veteran Spider-Man voice actors.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is the newest Marvel series on Disney+, and it serves as the set-up for the McU's variant of the classic character. While there are several ties to the incarnation brought to us by Tom Holland, there are still enough familiar features and callbacks to the classic comics.
