As traditional slashers clung on for dear life in the early 1990s, police procedural films took off. Audiences still craved death and mayhem done at the hands of a mad and methodical butcher, however, they wanted it all done differently. Fast forward to the beginning of the next decade, and one film combined both formats: 2001’s Ripper. This British-Canadian co-production, one subtitled Letter From Hell in some markets, plucked traits from both the slasher and the crime thriller. Yet rather than putting some beat cops or detectives on the case, the story pits forensics students against a killer. And not just any killer either — as the title of this film indicates, the culprit has modeled his or herself after one of history’s most notorious serial killers.

Ripper was not the first slasher from John Eyres; the British director helmed the obscure Goodnight, God Bless (a.k.a. Lucifer) back in the ‘80s.

Pierce Brosnan felt a personal connection to the story in his new film The Last Rifleman, in which he portrays a nearly 93-year-old World War II veteran grappling with the pain of his past.

“I thought it was such a heartfelt story, and it took me back to a part of Ireland that I didn’t know,” the Ireland-born actor tells The Hollywood Reporter of the movie that filmed in Belfast. “My stepfather was in the Second World War. He was a Scotsman from Glasgow. He talked little of the war, but he was in the tank regiment, and he talked about a particular incident which haunted him.”

Ever since David Lynch tried bringing Frank Herbert's epic tome to the big screen, "Dune" 1984 has enjoyed a somewhat uneven legacy. More than 800 film industry professionals in Germany and Austria have signed an open letter opposing antisemitism, with the number of signatories continuing to grow.

The signatories include a wide range of directors, writers, producers and other film industry professionals. Those signing the letter include directors Caroline Link, whose “Nowhere in Africa” won an Oscar; Stefan Ruzowitzky, whose “The Counterfeiters” also won an Oscar; and Marie Kreutzer, whose “Corsage” won a prize at Cannes (all pictured above). Further directors include Julia von Heinz, Kilian Riedhof, Dominik Graf, David Wnendt, Dani Levy and Doris Dörrie.

Others signing the letter include European Film Academy director Matthijs Wouter Knol, “Resident Evil” producer Martin Moszkowicz, producers Oliver Berben and Fabian Gasmia, and Jürgen Prochnow, an actor best known for the Oscar-nominated “Das Boot.”

The letter was originally published on Nov. 9, the anniversary of Kristallnacht in 1938, when the Nazis in Germany attacked Jewish people and property.

Horror Master John Carpenter knows you read Sutter Cane and is once again bringing some In the Mouth of Madness movie magic to this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, kicking off today.

Carpenter revealed on Twitter this morning that the Lovecraftian entity dubbed “Meatball,” seen in the film’s climax among a throng of toothy, tentacled beasts, will take up residence at Storm King Comics’ exhibition booth for the con’s duration.

The creature was designed and built by Knb Efx Group under Greg Nicotero for the final entry in Carpenter’s Apocalypse trilogy, which also includes The Thing and Prince of Darkness. “Meatball” is one of many Lovecraftian denizens created for the eighteen-foot Wall of Monsters seen in the film’s climax, chasing down the protagonist in an attempt to invade our world.

Wolfgang Petersen, the German writer-director who surfaced in Hollywood following the triumph of his submarine masterpiece Das Boot to make the action blockbusters In the Line of Fire, Air Force One and The Perfect Storm, has died. He was 81.

Petersen died Friday at his Brentwood home of pancreatic cancer, publicist Michelle Bega of Rogers & Cowan Pmk told The Hollywood Reporter.

Petersen will be remembered as one of cinema’s great craftsmen, a director who was able to handle big-budget pieces while deploying a human touch.

Munich-based Koch Films has struck a deal with Studiocanal Germany to take over the distributor’s entire sales and logistics activities for all physical home entertainment activities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Studiocanal’s extensive portfolio comprises new releases, series and classic catalog titles such as Francis Ford Coppola’s newly restored 1983 teen drama “The Outsiders” and David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive” as well as works by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch and Margarethe von Trotta.

In anticipation of the upcoming release of Denis Villeneuve’s remake, the excellent boutique label Arrow Video has issued a superb 2-disk Limited Edition package of David Lynch’s 1984 film, Dune. It comes in two versions—one in 4K Ultra HD, and the other in standard Blu-ray.

Filmmaker David Lynch today refuses to discuss Dune, which he made for producer Dino De Laurentiis for a whopping $40-42 million. It was a colossal flop at the time, was critically reviled, and audiences didn’t care much for it either. However, over the years, Dune has gained a cult following and it assuredly has its share of defenders, including Frank Herbert, the author of the original 1965 novel.

Ignored, maligned and hammered out into an ‘Alan Smithee’ extended cut for TV, David Lynch’s outstanding Sci-fi epic arrives on 4K Ultra HD, finally achieving the visual opulence on home video that it had in 70mm prints at the end of 1984. The fractured, de-Lynched storyline can be argued over, but the amazing design and arresting characterizations never fail to impress — Lynch attracted a world-class cast of movie stars and used them well. Even if it’s described as a hundred fragmented scenes from a larger narrative, they’re superlative fragments. Lynch should have been authorized to make an alternate cut, his own completely personal ‘impressionist’ version of the Frank Herbert story.

A critical character in Dune, both the novel and all three screen adaptations of it, is Duke Leto Atreides, head of the powerful Atreides family and father of the story’s protagonist, Paul Atreides. The Atreides are one of many noble families who wield immense power in this galactic empire of the far future, and Duke Leto is given control by the Emperor of perhaps the most important planet in the galaxy — Arrakis, also known as Dune.

Arrakis is the only planet that produces a substance called melange, or the spice, which enhances human abilities and makes space travel possible. But Leto is walking into a trap set by the Emperor and former Arrakis overlords the Harkonnens, who plan to wrest control of Arrakis away from Leto and his family by any means necessary — including murder.

At this point, Terrence Malick is a known entity. You’re either in or you’re out when it comes to his style of filmmaking. Sadly, despite my best efforts, I’m decidedly out. A Hidden Life takes all of Malick’s worst instincts, some of his best, and mixes them together in an epic run time that became utterly punishing to endure. Amazing visuals and a sense of wonder only take you so far, especially when this has become par for the course for this particular storyteller. At about 80 minutes, this film would have been sparse and only mildly off-putting in its inscrutable nature. However, at about 180, it’s positively tortuous. Opening this week, Malick fans only need apply here. The movie is a biographical drama set during the early days of World War II. Taking place in Austria, this is the story of the country’s most well known conscientious objector.

Acclaimed filmmaker Terrence Malick does something he hasn’t done in years with his new film A Hidden Life — he attempts to tell an actual, old-fashioned story. "If our leaders, if they are evil, what does one do?" Fox Searchlight has unveiled the first official trailer for the new Terrence Malick film titled A Hidden Life (originally known as Radegund while in production). This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival playing in competition this summer, but didn't win any awards. Set during World War II in Austria, the film follows a local farmer who refuses to fight for the Nazis after they take over and annex Austria. The nearly-three-hour-long film follows Franz Jägerstätter, played by August Diehl, as the Nazis come to power and he is eventually thrown in jail for refusing to take the Hitler oath. Terrence Malick returns this year with A Hidden Life, which follows Austria’s Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl), a conscientious objector who was put to death at the age of 36 for undermining military actions. Shot by cinematographer Jörg Widmer, his work can be seen in the gorgeous first trailer, which Fox Searchlight has debuted ahead of a Tiff screening and December release.

Leonardo Goi said in his review, “Shot in gorgeous wide-angles by Jörg Widmer, Hidden Life feels like a return to more linear, traditional narratives for a director whose last four 2010s narrative works (from The Tree of Life to Song to Song) had toyed with more labyrinthine, multi-layered scaffoldings. Are you ready to see .0014% of the new film by Terrence Malick? Ahead of the world premiere of A Hidden Life at Cannes Film Festival on May 19, as part of an Opening Day package Canal+ aired the first clip from the 173-minute film, clocking in at a brief 15 seconds. Still, when it comes to our most-anticipated of the festival, we’ll take what we can get.

A Hidden Life follows Austria’s Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl), a conscientious objector who was put to death at the age of 36 for undermining military actions. In the first clip, we get the first glimpse of cinematographer Jörg Widmer as he uses a wide-angle lens to capture a lover’s embrace, also featuring Valerie Pachner.

We’ll soon be sharing our most-anticipated films of Cannes Film Festival, which begins next week, but it’s safe to reveal that the premiere we’re most looking forward to is Terrence Malick’s A Hidden Life, formerly titled Radegund. Marking the director’s return to World War II dramas, this one takes a much different perspective than The Thin Red Line.

Anyone who’s seen Terrence Malick’s last few movies knows that the media-shy filmmaker stopped concerning himself with living up to people’s expectations of him long ago, if indeed he ever worried about that in the first place. The “Tree of Life,” “Days of Heaven,” and “Thin Red Line” director appears to have taken time out of his schedule working on “Radegund” — an upcoming World War II drama that, if early reports are to be believed, will be more structured than his recent output — to work on an advertisement for the Google Pixel 3.
