Netflix Will Soon Lose Jordan Peele’s Best Movie: “One of the most original horror titles”
Image
I’m going to need you to stay with me here, okay? Jordan Peele fundamentally changed the horror genre when his debut Get Out was released in 2017. Beyond being a box office success (and critical hit), Get Out was also the rare horror movie to not only be represented at the Academy Awards but actually win. Congrats to Jordan Peele, the first Black man to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Seriously, that’s no small feat. Somewhat unfairly, Peele’s faced enormous pressure since then. With such a staggering debut—especially as a Black horror filmmaker—Peele’s been tasked with maintaining that same level of quality, even if that innately subjective metric is impossible to meet.

Of course, Peele’s directorial debut was anything but a fluke. Come on, Nope is a generational achievement. If it’s been a beat, watch it again. It’s staggeringly good.

New ‘Queens of the Dead’ Image Reveals a New Zombie Classic From George A. Romero's Daughter [Exclusive]
Image
Filmmaker Tina Romero is joining the family business. The daughter of the late, great George A. Romero, who might be best known as the visionary behind Night of the Living Dead, will soon release a zombie movie of her own — albeit with an extra touch of flair. As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview event, we’re thrilled to share an image from the director’s upcoming production, Queens of the Dead. Set for a theatrical arrival this fall, the film, which took home the coveted Audience Award at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, follows a mixed group of strangers and friends who are out for an evening of partying when all hell breaks loose and the zombie apocalypse steps out into the night. Together, this mismatched assortment of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies will need to put their differences aside if they have any hopes of making...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds paid tribute to Dawn of the Dead star Ken Foree in zombie episode
Ken Foree in The X-Files (1993)
Ken Foree plays an unforgettable role in one of the great movies ever made, the George A. Romero classic Dawn of the Dead (get it Here) – so it’s nice to hear (as reported by our friends at Bloody Disgusting) that the makers of the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds decided to pay tribute to Foree in their recent, unexpected zombie episode! In the third episode of Strange New Worlds‘ third season, the crew of the starship Enterprise ventured to a planet that was overrun by zombie-like creatures – and this planet was called Kenfori! The Ken Foree reference even made it into the title of the episode: Shuttle to Kenfori.

Word of the tribute quickly made its way to Ken Foree himself, who posted on social media, “I know this is out there, but I wanted to share this with you as well. It’s an honor and...

Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
Quentin Tarantino lied about being in 1978’s Dawn of the Dead for years
Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
Before Quentin Tarantino became one of the biggest writers/directors in Hollywood, he wanted to be an actor (and sometimes we get to see that he still kind of fancies himself one…). But landing a role can be a bit of a catch-22: you may not get hired if you don’t have a resume, while you can’t build a resume until you get roles. So, you lie – and that’s just what Tarantino did, claiming he had a small role in 1978’s Dawn of the Dead.

As noted horror aficionado Tarantino said in an early episode of he and Roger Avary’s The Video Archives Podcast, he put Dawn of the Dead on his first resume to pad it out since these were almost impossible to confirm. “There’s a young man in the movie. There’s one of the motorcycle guys. He’s got shaggy hair...

Greg Nicotero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
Guts & Glory: Greg Nicotero’s horror competition show premieres on Shudder in September
Greg Nicotero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
For four seasons, jack of all trades Greg Nicotero (writer, director, producer, FX artist, etc.) teamed up with the Shudder streaming service to bring us the anthology series Creepshow, a continuation of the franchise George A. Romero and Stephen King began with the 1982 film Creepshow and the 1987 sequel Creepshow 2. We’re waiting to hear if there’s going to be a season 5 of that series – but while we wait, AMC Networks announced that Nicotero and Shudder are working on an unscripted horror competition series called Guts & Glory. It has been revealed that Guts & Glory is set to debut with a two-episode premiere on Tuesday, September 9 on both Shudder and AMC+ in the U.S. and Canada. The remaining four episodes of the six-episode series, which features an integrated sponsorship by Hyundai, will drop weekly on Tuesdays.

A press release let us know that the series “flips the...

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Names Zombie Planet After ‘Dawn of the Dead’ Star Ken Foree
Image
The latest episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” boldly goes where no “Star Trek” has gone before.

Season 3’s third episode sends the crew of the starship Enterprise to a zombie-infested planet known as Kenfori, named after Dawn of the Dead star Ken Foree.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to have a planet named after me in ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,'” Foree wrote on Twitter.

Director Dan Liu and writers Onitra Johnson and Bill Wolkoff also included a few other references to George A. Romero‘s seminal zombie films — including a Klingon whose dying words, “Choke on me,” echo Rhodes’ unforgettable “Choke on ’em!” from Day of the Dead.

The title of the episode, “Shuttle to Kenfori,” may also be a nod to Train to Busan, while the plant-like zombies evoke “The Last of Us.”

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is streaming on Paramount+.

‘Screaming and Conjuring’ Exclusive Excerpt Recalls Fan Fury Over James Gunn Remaking ‘Dawn of the Dead’
Image
Earlier this week we shared a sneak peek at the upcoming book Screaming and Conjuring from author Clark Collis that put the spotlight on James Gunn’s horror comedy Slither, and we’re back with another Gunn-themed excerpt from the must-read horror book.

This particular exclusive excerpt is all about James Gunn and Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, the 2004 remake of the George A. Romero masterpiece that Gunn scripted and Snyder directed. Yes, two filmmakers who would go on to bring very different depictions of Superman to the big screen got their start working together on a classic horror remake!

While Dawn of the Dead is fondly remembered as one of the best remakes from that particular period of time, the initial response to the project wasn’t exactly kind. In fact, James Gunn – who had previously written the Scooby-Doo movie at the time – even received death threats.

Zombies remain one of the most eternal movie monsters, whether their origin is viral in nature or voodoo-related. 'The Long Walk' Director Reveals Stephen King's Early Reaction to the Adaptation
Image
The Long Walk is the next Stephen Kingadaptation that's set for release. The dystopian horror film will land in theaters on September 12, 2025, and fans of the author will finally get the chance to see the story on the big screen after a lengthy period in development. Judging from the first look, The Long Walk is a faithful adaptation of the terrifying novel, which is something that doesn't always happen when King's work is brought to life. Director Francis Lawrence faced numerous challenges when he accepted the gig — not least the idea of subjecting his vision to King's approval.

Lawrence, also famous for his work in The Hunger Games franchise, spoke to Den of Geek about working on yet another dystopian teen-oriented adaptation of a famous book. "It's kind of impossible not to think of The Long Walk when you're working on something like The Hunger Games," the director admitted, but fortunately,...

New Trailer for ‘The Long Walk’ Previews a Brutal Stephen King Adaptation Hitting Theaters This Fall
Image
Lionsgate has just released the official trailer for The Long Walk, a new dystopian horror film based on Stephen King’s 1979 novel, written under his pen name Richard Bachman. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence, known for The Hunger Games series, and it’s set to hit U.S. theaters on September 12, 2025.

The story takes place in a grim future where the U.S. is controlled by a brutal regime. Every year, a group of teenage boys is forced to take part in a walking contest. It sounds simple, but there’s a deadly twist: if they drop below three miles per hour for too long, they’re killed. The walk only ends when one boy is left standing.

The cast is packed with rising stars and familiar faces. Cooper Hoffman plays the lead role of Raymond Garraty. David Jonsson takes on the role of Peter McVries, and Mark Hamill...

New Trailer Drops for ‘The Long Walk’- Stephen King Adaptation Starring Cooper Hoffman and Mark Hamill
Image
The first trailer for The Long Walk has just been released during Sdcc, giving fans a chilling look at the upcoming Stephen King adaptation that’s set to hit theaters on September 12, 2025. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film is based on King’s 1979 novel written under his pen name Richard Bachman.

It’s a tense, dystopian horror story set in a version of the U.S. where freedom is gone and survival is everything.

The movie follows a group of teenage boys who are forced to take part in a brutal walking contest. The rules are simple, but deadly, you must keep walking at a speed of at least three miles per hour, and if you slow down too much or stop, you’re executed on the spot.

Only one walker is allowed to survive, and the last one standing wins. It’s a test of endurance, fear, and pain,...

Stephen King Was Very Involved In The Casting For New Survival Thriller After 3 Failed Attempts
Image
At San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that Stephen King was very involved in the casting behind The Long Walk. The story is a dystopian novel that King originally published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. It focuses on the story of a group of boys made to participate in a competition called The Long Walk, where they must continuously walk or risk being shot.

Over the years, The Long Walk has gone through multiple adaptation attempts. First, Night of the Living Deaddirector George A. Romero was approached to direct a version of the book, but that never came to fruition. Over 15 years went by before the rights were secured by Frank Darabont in 2007.

Darabont's rights eventually lapsed when his project never came to fruition, and control over the story went to New Line Cinema in 2018. New Line even announced a director in 2019, marking the third attempt to make the film.

26 Years Later, a Forgotten Stephen King Horror Story Is Getting Its First Adaptation at Lionsgate
Image
Lionsgate, like the rest of Hollywood, cannot get enough of Stephen King. With The Long Walk hitting theaters this fall, the studio is now looking to be behind the first adaptation of King's 1999 novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate has optioned the rights to the 1999 psychological horror novel and tapped Jt Mollner to write and direct the adaptation. Mollner is best known for his 2024 breakout hit Strange Darling, which wowed critics and audiences, including King himself, who called the thriller "really terrific" and "a clever masterpiece" on X last year. Tom Gordon will actually serve as Mollner's second project based on a King novel, as he scripted Lionsgate's upcoming Long Walk adaptation, which Francis Lawrence directed and is set to hit theaters on Sept. 12.

"Jt is a filmmaker we believe has a bright future," said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Erin Westerman in a statement.

‘The Home’ Review: Subpar Pete Davidson Thriller Tries to Put the ‘Boo’ in Boomers
Image
If the late, great George A. Romero has an heir apparent, James DeMonaco has a serious claim to the throne. His film series “The Purge,” about a yearly American holiday where murder is legal, is — much like Romero’s zombie movies — a blistering critique on modern America’s decay, which shines a light on the fragility of social structures we take for granted. Except in DeMonaco’s world people have not turned on each other because civilization collapsed. In “The Purge,” civilization collapsed because people wanted an excuse to turn on each other.

So a brand new DeMonaco film is always an exciting prospect. Or at least, it was until “The Home.” “The Home” is yet another angry film. The target of its ire is relevant and it warrants skewering. But for some reason DeMonaco, who’s usually so eager to confront his audience, pulls his biggest punches. “The Home...

'The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon' Film Adaptation Set with 'Strange Darling' Director
Image
As fans await the release of Lionsgate's adaption of Stephen King's The Long Walk later this year, it appears as if the studio is in no hurry to say farewell to the acclaimed author. Teaming with producer Roy Lee and director Jt Mollner, they'll next be bringing the underrated 1999 King novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon to life, which marks the first time the book has been adapted for film.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Mollner (who wrote the screenplay for The Long Walk) will sit in the director's chair for The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and also pen the script for the feature. Casting has yet to be revealed for the project, which is still in the early stages of development. This will be Lee and Mollner's second project together, following the success of last year's Strange Darling, which is undoubtedly one of the best thrillers...

Stephen King’s ‘The Girl Who Loved Tom Gorden’ Sets Film Adaptation From ‘Strange Darling’ Director
Image
Jt Mollner, the filmmaker behind last year’s cult hit “Strange Darling” and the screenwriter of this year’s Stephen King adaptation “The Long Walk,” will adapt King’s 1999 novel “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon” for Lionsgate. Mollner will write and direct the project. Erin Westerman, president, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, made the announcement Thursday.

The original book follows a young girl who gets separated from her family in the woods and encounters multiple hardships, including a run-in with a bloodthirsty bear. To cope, she conjures Tom Gordon, who at the time played for the Boston Red Sox (King’s favorite team). In 2004 a pop-up version of the story was released, designed by Kees Moerbeek and illustrated by Alan Dingman.

Mollner is not the first filmmaker to take a crack at the story. It was a passion project of George A. Romero’s, who didn’t get to make...

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon: Jt Mollner to write and direct Stephen King adaptation
Image
Stephen King’s psychological horror novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon was published in 1999, and it was quickly announced that the film adaptation rights were in the hands of one of my all-time favorite filmmakers: George A. Romero, who had previously worked with King on the Creepshow films, The Dark Half, and other adaptations that didn’t make it into production with Romero at the helm (like Pet Sematary and The Stand). Unfortunately, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon ended up being another unmade Romero / King collaboration… but now, it looks like a film adaptation of the book might finally happen, as Lionsgate has optioned the rights for writer/director Jt Mollner. Mollner recently got a lot of positive attention for his horror movie Strange Darling, and he wrote the screenplay for the upcoming King adaptation The Long Walk.

Stephen King's 26-Year-Old Psychological Thriller Book Becoming A Movie After 2 Failed Adaptation Attempts
Image
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is finally becoming a movie. Stephen King's 1999 psychological horror novel follows a nine-year-old girl who becomes lost in the woods with only her Walkman radio, and as she listens to baseball games, her love of pitcher Tom Gordon begins to result in vivid hallucinations, visions that may hold the key to her survival.

There have already been two failed attempts at adapting The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon into a movie. The first was when George A. Romero was attached to write and direct a film adaptation, but those plans stalled in October 2005 before his death in 2017. In November 2020, it was announced that Lynne Ramsay had been hired to direct the movie, which also fell through.

Now, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon movie is in the works with Jt Mollner writing and directing for Lionsgate. Mollner previously penned Lionsgate's The Long Walk,...

Simon Pegg Apologized to George Romero for Contradicting ‘Dawn of the Dead’ With This ‘Shaun of the Dead’ Scene
Image
It should go without saying that Shaun of the Dead wouldn’t exist without the work of George A. Romero. The late filmmaker pioneered the zombie movie genre with classics such as Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and the Japanese commercial for Resident Evil 2 that was better than every single Resident Evil movie.

So naturally, when Shaun of the Dead star and co-writer Simon Pegg visited the “Criterion Closet” — i.e., the room beloved by movie obsessives who aren’t claustrophobes — he highlighted Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead.

“George Romero basically invented the modern zombie movie, and I don’t think he gets enough credit for it,” Pegg argued. “Because a lot of people have taken his idea — myself included, and Edgar Wright, although (Shaun of the Dead) was very much a tribute to George — and sort of run with it, as...

James Gunn & Zack Snyder's $102M Remake Is Leaving Streaming Soon & You'd Be Dead Wrong To Miss It
Image
James Gunn is the latest filmmaker to take on Superman after Zack Snyder's version, but the two filmmakers collaborated long before their respective days in the DC Universe. Just like Gunn is doing now with the beginning of the Dcu, Snyder was instrumental in helping shape the earlier take on the cinematic universe with the now-defunct Snyderverse.

Gunn has now launched his Dcu with the release of Superman, the first solo Superman movie since Snyder's Man of Steel. While some fans have sought to put these two filmmakers against each other with their tonally different takes on Superman, the two are actually quite friendly, going back to their early collaboration on another remake.

George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
George A. Romero‘s first two Dead movies, Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, were quickly seen as horror classics. But the third film in his series, 1985’s Day of the Dead (watch it Here), had a tougher time gaining acceptance. Many fans saw it as a disappointment, the weak link. It took years for Day of the Dead to be re-evaluated and viewed as a classic. July 19th marked the 40th anniversary of the original release of this classic – and coinciding with the anniversary, Scream Factory announced (via Fangoria) that they will be giving Day of the Dead a 4K Uhd release! A release date has not yet been scheduled.

Written and directed by Romero, Day of the Dead has the following synopsis: The walking dead have taken over the world. Only a small band of scientists and solders are definitely known to remain, and...

Zack Snyder's 77% Rotten Tomatoes Horror Remake Exits Streaming Soon

An Underrated Zombie Franchise Is Dominating the Streaming Charts
Image
Zombies are all the rage on Disney+ right now. The streamer's Top 10 list is currently being overrun by the beloved Disney franchise Zombies.

Per FlixPatrol, as of July 14, Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires is ranked No. 1 on Disney+'s Top 10 Movies Worldwide list, with Zombies and Zombies 2 in the No. 4 and No. 8 spots, respectively. In the United States, Zombies' domination on Disney+ is even stronger, with all four movies in the top four spots, with Dawn of the Vampires at No. 1. The Zombies franchise dominating the Disney+ streaming charts comes just three days after the fourth installment, Dawn of the Vampires, was released onto the streamer.

Disney's Zombies is an underrated franchise featuring the undead creatures, as it's likely not the first series that will come to mind for fans, given that the title characters are nowhere near as vicious, threatening, or scary as, say, the ones from George A. Romero...

5 Films To Look Foward To At Fantasia 2025
Image
It’s that time of the year again, and I, for one, could not be more excited. Fantasia International Film Festival 2025 kicks off on July 16th and, like usual, they’ve got a great selection of films to check out. It’s a decidedly more independent group of films this year, but that’s just how the horror genre has been going in 2025. Our Editor-in-Chief Chris Bumbray already checked out Together earlier this year at Sundance (read his review Here), so while that’s not on this list, it’s definitely one of my most anticipated of the entire summer. If you’re attending the festival in person, you’re going to want to check all of these out. And if you’re not, you’re going to want to take note of these, as they’ll release throughout the rest of 2025 (and sometimes beyond) and often prove to be...

7 Best Horror Movies Streaming on Netflix Right Now
Image
Netflix is bringing the thrills and chills all the way through the heat of summer with its scary movies, and of course, TheWrap wants to show you the best ones to watch first.

No, but seriously, Netflix is definitely doing its big one with its slate of horror flicks this month. They’ve got one of the most iconic films from O.G. horror filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock, as well as the Philippou brothers’ freakishly scary “Talk to Me” and Parker Finn’s grinny goodie “Smile.” But then you add Jordan Peele’s history-making “Us?”

Making this list was light work, but the titles on this get pretty, pretty dark. Check out our picks for the best horror movies on Netflix this month below.

“Smile” (Paramount Pictures) “Smile” (2022)

Beginning with the first film in 2022, the “Smile” universe has quickly become one of the scariest franchises to enter the horror arena. Rather than a frown or scowl,...

George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
Queens of the Dead: zombie movie from George A. Romero’s daughter secures North American distribution
George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
Back in 1968, George A. Romero made his feature directorial debut with one of the greatest horror movies ever made, Night of the Living Dead – and while doing so, he also introduced the world to flesh-eating ghouls that became a new definition for the world “zombie.” Romero, who passed away in 2017, went on to make several more zombie movies over the decades… and recently, his daughter Tina Romero revealed that she’s making her own feature directorial debut with a zombie movie called Queens of the Dead. That movie had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival last month – and won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film there! Now, Deadline reports that it has secured North American distribution through Independent Film Company (formerly IFC) and the Shudder streaming service. A specific release date has not yet been announced, but Independent Film Company has let it be known that they...

‘Queens of the Dead’ – Tina Romero’s Zombie Movie Getting a Theatrical Release This Fall
Tina Romero
Tina Romero, the daughter of late horror master George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead), makes her own mark on the zombie genre with Queens of the Dead, and Deadline reports this morning that the film has been acquired by Independent Film Company and Shudder.

Here in North America, Queens of the Dead will shamble into theaters in Fall 2025.

Shudder’s Director of Acquisitions and Productions, Adam Koehler, said in a statement, “We’re beyond thrilled to bring this wildly original vision to audiences—a fearless, glam-drenched ride that’s as funny as it is ferocious. With razor-sharp direction and a fierce cast, Queens of the Dead is a thrilling new chapter in a legacy of horror royalty.”

“The zombie apocalypse is such a rich sandbox to play in when it comes to social commentary. I can’t be my dad’s daughter without making an attempt at saying something with zombies,...

Tina Romero’s ‘Queens Of The Dead’ Acquired By Independent Film Company & Shudder
Tomas Matos and Dominique Jackson in Queens of the Dead (2025)
Exclusive: Independent Film Company (formerly IFC) and Shudder have acquired North American rights to the horror comedy Queens of the Dead from filmmaker Tina Romero, daughter of legendary “Godfather of Zombies” George A. Romero.

Paying tribute to the zombies from the elder Romero’s classic zombie films with a fresh, contemporary and queer twist, the film will be released in theaters this fall, after winning the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film in its Tribeca world premiere.

In Romero’s debut feature co-written with comedian Erin Judge, on which we were first to report last July, a zombie apocalypse breaks out in Brooklyn on the night of a giant warehouse party, where an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies must put aside their drama and use their unique skills to fight against the brain-thirsty, scrolling undead.

The film’s ensemble includes Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Jaquel Spivey...

The horror! ‘Sinners’ and ‘The Substance’ lead Fangoria Chainsaw Awards nominations of year’s scariest offerings
Image
The grossest, goriest, and most gratuitous of the year are set to be feted at the 2025 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

The horror magazine has unveiled the nominees for its signature awards, which includes the big categories you'd expect — like Best Wide Release and Best Lead Performance — and some you mind not—like Best Video Game and Best Public Domain Resurrection.

The Chainsaw Awards are also among the first opportunities for this year's potential awards frontrunner, Sinners, to flex its muscles. (Metaphorical muscles. Michael B. Jordan's are currently streaming on HBO Max.) Ryan Coogler's period vampire thriller is in contention for Best Wide Release — where it will compete with 28 Years Later — and boasts a total of ten nominations in all.

With an eligibility window that ran from July 2024 to June 2025, the Chainsaw Awards also include some of last year's awards contenders, including The Substance, which tied Sinners for nominations.

Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ and Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’ Lead Fangoria’s 2025 Chainsaw Awards Nominations
Image
“Sinners” and “The Substance” lead the nominations for Fangoria’s 2025 Chainsaw Awards, which recognizes standout achievements in horror across film, television and gaming.

“This year we continue the new tradition of pitting the second half of last year with the first half of this year in a cage match of cinematic carnage,” Phil Nobile Jr., Fangoria Eic, said in a statement. “Like the Grammys, but gorier. It’s made for a rather chaotic list of nominees, and we expect the voting to be vicious and voluminous.”

“Sinners” and “The Substance” each earned 10 nominations, competing in the same categories for best wide release, best cinematography, best score, best director, best screenplay, best costume design, and best lead and supporting performances. Nominations also include “Strange Darling,” Cuckoo,” “The Ugly Stepsister,” 28 Years Later” and “Longlegs.” Other categories include best streaming premiere, best kill and best creature FX.

Five Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About ‘The Return of the Living Dead’
Image
To mark today’s in-universe date – July 3, 1984 – and to start warming up for the film’s 40th anniversary this August, here are five pieces of behind-the-scenes trivia that prove Dan O’Bannon’s punk-zombie opus The Return of the Living Dead is more than just “the one with Tarman and the brain buffet.”

Five Things about The Return of the Living Dead that you might not know 1. A legal split with George A. Romero birthed the project

After co-writing Night of the Living Dead, John Russo kept the phrase “living dead” while George Romero walked away with “dead” for his sequels. Russo’s first script, pitched as an official follow-up, was a straight horror piece. When producer Tom Fox hired screenwriter Dan O’Bannon, the tone changed overnight: out went the gloomy sequel, in came a splattery, punk-rock black comedy.

2. The extras really did eat brains—well, calf brains

Zombie (1979)
Was Thatcher right to ban ‘video nasties’? I binged Zombie Flesh Eaters and Slaughtered Vomit Dolls to find out
Zombie (1979)
The ‘obscene’ movies once banned in the UK are now mostly freely available. Are these tales of cannibals and the undead antiquated schlock or genuinely repellent?

Later this month, the cult film service Arrow will do something that would once have plunged the UK into screaming fits of utter chaos. That’s right, it’s going to release Zombie Flesh Eaters in glorious gory 4K detail.

The film comes with a tremendously confusing backstory. In Italy, George A Romero’s Dawn of the Dead was recut by Dario Argento and retitled Zombi. Zombi, no relation to Bambi, was such a success that a sequel was commissioned, using the script of an unmade movie entitled Nightmare Island. This film became Zombi 2. In the UK, Zombi 2 was renamed Zombie Flesh Eaters. And then it was banned.

Tom Savini’s Night of the Living Dead 1990 gets an uncut 4K release in September
Image
In 1968, director George A. Romero re-defined the word “zombie” with his feature debut Night of the Living Dead, one of the most highly respected and beloved horror movies ever made. Unfortunately, Romero and his collaborators didn’t make as much money off of that film as they should have, due to a copyright mistake that instantly put Night of the Living Dead in the public domain. So twenty-two years later they decided to produce a remake with legendary special effects artist Tom Savini directing. The 1990 version of Night of the Living Dead (watch it Here) didn’t have the smoothest production – in fact, Savini has described the experience of making Night ’90 as “the worst nightmare of my life,” and says that the finished film only represents a small percentage of the vision he had for it. The rest was lost due to budgetary limitations, clashes with the producers, and the wrath of the MPAA…...

Tom Savini’s ‘Night of the Living Dead’ Resurrected on SteelBook 4K Uhd with New Uncensored Cut
Image
Tom Savini‘s 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead will celebrate its 35th anniversary with a SteelBook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray release on September 23 via Sony.

In addition to the theatrical version, a new uncensored cut is included, both newly restored in 4K with Dolby Vision. Supervised by Savini, the alternate cut restores gore that was originally cut to avoid an X rating, in addition to starting in black and white before transitioning to color.

“Yes finally,” Savini wrote on Instagram. “Completely uncut, uncensored, and as I intended 35 years ago… it is black and white for a bit, as a homage to the original, and then color opens the curtain to my remake.”

Disc 1 – 4K Uhd:

Uncensored cut Theatrical version 4K restoration presented with Dolby Vision/Hdr Commentary with director Tom Savini on the Uncensored Cut, moderated by Michael Felsher (new) Audio: Dolby Atmos (both versions), 5.1 (both versions), 2-Channel...

'28 Years Later' Slays James Gunn and Zack Snyder’s 77% Rotten Tomatoes Zombie Remake at Global Box Office
Image
Guess who's down with the sickness? It's Zack Snyder's feature directorial debut, Dawn of the Dead, which was recently overtaken at the global box office by fellow zombie thriller 28 Years Later. Released in 2004, Dawn of the Dead was a remake of George A. Romero's genre classic of the same name; it helped reinvigorate zombie movies for a new generation of audiences, incidentally, alongside the first 28 Days Later. Directed by Danny Boyle, the original film was released in 2002, and ended up grossing around $85 million at the worldwide box office.

The new movie passed the coveted $100 million mark globally only a few days ago. Its cumulative worldwide box office haul currently stands at $106 million, while Dawn of the Dead concluded its run with just under $104 million globally. Written by James Gunn, who's now a major filmmaker and studio executive, Dawn of the Dead was produced on a reported budget of $26 million.

Arrow Video is bringing Creepshow 2 to 4K Uhd
Image
The George A. Romero / Stephen King horror anthology Creepshow is one of my all-time favorite movies – and so is the Michael Gornick-directed sequel Creepshow 2, which I’ve probably watched even more times than its predecessor. I love everything about Creepshow 2, so I was very glad to hear the news that Arrow Video is giving the film a 4K Uhd release in the US, the UK, and Canada. The release date is September 30th, and copies can be pre-ordered through a variety of links (check out the list on Arrow Video’s Facebook page), including This One.

Directed by Gornick from a screenplay by George A. Romero (based on stories written by Stephen King), Creepshow 2 has the following synopsis: Join our old friend, the rotting Creep himself, as he introduces this horror anthology which presents gruesome looks at three tales of horror: a hit-and-run driver in “The Hitchhiker...

George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
3-hour director’s cut of George A. Romero’s Martin is safely housed in the University of Pittsburgh
George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
For decades, fans of George A. Romero mourned the loss of the black and white, three and a half hour director’s cut of his film Martin. On an audio commentary, Romero once said something along the lines of the “greatest tragedy of his career” was that the film reels containing his Martin director’s cut went missing. Romero passed away in 2017, but then the director’s cut film reels were somehow finally been located in 2021 and went up for auction at Julien’s. Martin cinematographer Michael Gornick said this director’s cut “was always Romero’s preferred version. May it soon return safely to the custody of Richard Rubinstein and Braddock Associates for digital revitalization and distribution to the world.” Sadly, producer Richard Rubinstein made it clear that he did not want the 3-hour version of the movie making its way out into the world, for whatever reason. The...

Stephen King’s The Stand Sets New Movie Adaptation — Doug Liman To Direct
Image
Stephen King adaptations are like buses: you wait years for one, and then a dozen come along all at once. By the end of 2025 alone, we'll have had Osgood Perkins' cursed toy flick The Monkey, Mike Flanagan's soulful weepy The Life Of Chuck, Edgar Wright's The Running Man, and Francis Lawrence's The Long Walk — and that's just on the movie front. But now Paramount Pictures and Doug Liman have decided it's time to take a stand. Oh no, hang on... *checks notes*... they have decided to take The Stand. Yes, King's biggest book is heading for the big screen.

Per THR's reporting, the Edge Of Tomorrow and Road House filmmaker has signed on to do what Ben Affleck, Paul Greengrass, Josh Boone, David Yates, George A. Romero, and more previously could not — which is to successfully turn King's weighty, 1152-page tome into a feature film. Sure, there've...

The Stand | Doug Liman to direct new adaptation
Image
Stephen King’s The Stand is the latest project to land on director Doug Liman’s slate. More on the new adaptation here.

From stories of on-set chaos on 2002’s The Bourne Identity to his plans to shoot a film with Tom Cruise beyond the confines of Earth’s atmosphere, Doug Liman always seems to have a knack for creating extraordinary productions that often make for great film stories further down the line. A master of sprawling technical productions he might be, but Liman is surely going to find that reputation put to the test once more now that he’s been announced as the director of The Stand for Paramount Pictures.

After all, Stephen King’s source novel has often been seen as unfilmable. Sure, we’ve had two distinct TV miniseries release over the decades since the book was first published in 1978, but a film adaptation has failed...
