Hans Zimmer’s musical score was one of the outstanding elements of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies. He was recognized with an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the first Dune film at the 94th Oscars. However, we learned a few days back that Dune: Part 2, despite receiving immense praise for Zimmer’s score, was made ineligible in the Original Score category.

Zimmer has now addressed the issue and he is critical of The Academy’s move to overlook Dune: Part 2‘s music. Zimmer might still make it to the nominations, thanks to Steve McQueen’s Blitz score. However, he hinted at the dangerous precedent The Academy has set where studios will look to make sequels solely based on their potential awards eligibility.

One of the glaring omissions from Monday’s Golden Globe nominations was that Denis Villeneuve’s epic sequel “Dune: Part Two” was not among the eight films in the best cinematic and box office achievement category.

Introduced for 2023’s ceremony where “Barbie” took home the statuette, eligible films must gross more than $150 million with a minimum of $100 million in the U.S. According to Box Office Mojo, 20 movies released in 2024 have grossed more than $100 million domestically, including Warner Bros’ “Dune 2,” which brought in more than $700 million globally.

According to Dick Clark Productions, the award recognizes “the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence.”

Needless to say, “Dune 2’s” exclusion was pronounced, even with the film still scoring two noms for best picture (drama) and Hans Zimmer’s original score (which is not Oscar eligible...

Before they head to the Grammys, Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus will compete at the 2025 Golden Globes.

Grande’s role in Wicked landed her a nomination for best performance by a female actor in a supporting role for any motion picture, where Selena Gomez is also a nominee for Emilia Pérez; Gomez also scored two more nods for Only Murders In the Building. Cyrus is in contention for best original song for co-writing “Beautiful That Way” from The Last Showgirl, which she shares with singer Lykke Li and Andrew Wyatt, who won an Oscar for co-writing “Shallow” from A Star is Born.

Nominations for the 82nd annual Golden Globe were revealed Monday, with Wicked, Gladiator II, Anora, Emilia Pérez, A Complete Unknown, Baby Reindeer, The Bear, Shōgun and Slow Horses among film and TV projects in the mix.

Emilia Pérez leads film nominations with 10, ahead of The Brutalist with seven and Conclave with six. TV nominations are led by The Bear with five and Only Murders in the Building and Shōgun with four each.

Those movies are going to be the absolute pinnacle of any composer’s career. Before that, they’ll be doing even sillier stuff, and that goes equally for the most famous composers of all.

6 John Williams Did the Original Theme Song to ‘Gilligan’s Island’

In the 20 years after 1976, four new movies broke the record for highest-grossing movie of all-time: Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. and Jurassic Park. All four of them were scored by John Williams. But a decade before the earliest of those four, Williams was enlisted to write the theme song to a TV show — a new series called Gilligan’s Island.

As soon as he was hired to write the score for Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II,” Harry Gregson-Williams knew that he’d need to come to terms with the music Hans Zimmer had written for the original “Gladiator” in 2000. “I’ve done sequels before, but this was perhaps a bit more complex emotionally since I’m buddies with Hans, and his score for the original is so loved, quite rightly,” he said. But just as Scott used a couple of flashbacks to Russell Crowe’s character, Maximus, but spent most of his time on Paul Mescal, who plays Crowe’s son, Lucius, Gregson-Williams wanted to be sparing with the quotes from Zimmer’s themes.

“There’s 100 minutes of score in this movie, and probably five or six minutes that contain Hans’ themes,” he said. “At the end of the film, I wanted to just slip into Hans’ theme as if it evolved there naturally.

Exclusive: Saoirse Ronan, a four-time Oscar nominee, has been earning an entirely new set of props for her performance in Blitz, the latest feature from British filmmaker Steve McQueen.

In the WWII pic, Ronan plays Rita, a young mother searching for her son who has gone missing during Germany’s aerial bombardment of London. Rita also is a keen musician and can more than carry a tune. In one scene, she is chosen to sing for a live BBC wartime radio broadcast and performs the gentle but defiant song “Winter Coat.” Ronan has now recorded a new live version of the song, which you can watch above.

Tom Hanks is taking viewers across the Western Hemisphere in the first trailer for the NBCUniversal and the BBC’s wildlife documentary series The Americas.

The Academy Award winner, who was hand-selected by producers, narrates the 10-episode series, which uses cutting-edge technology to immerse audiences into ecosystems across North and South America. Executive produced by Mike Gunton, with music by Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer Hans Zimmer, The Americas will debut with two back-to-back episodes in February.

Toby Gorman, president of Universal Television Alternative Studio, previously told The Hollywood Reporter that selecting Hanks as narrator was an easy choice.

“We asked ourselves, who is the American version of [BBC wildlife documentary legend] David Attenborough? We agreed internally there was a list of one: Tom Hanks. What we didn’t know was if he would agree to do it. [But] it resonated with him,” Gorman said.

Composer Harry Gregson-Williams understood the assignment when director Ridley Scott asked him to score “Gladiator 2.”

“It was to embody the spiritual essence of the first film, but move forward into a fresh new world,” Gregson-Williams explains.

In early talks with Scott, Gregson-Williams also knew he would have to compose at least 100 minutes of music.

The sequel picks up two decades after the first “Gladiator” film. It follows Lucius (Paul Mescal) — the grandson of Rome’s former emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Maximus (Russell Crowe). Lucius is forced into the gladiator arena after Roman soldiers led by General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) invade his hometown. The 2024 Hollywood Music in Media Awards were handed out on Wednesday night, Nov. 20, during a ceremony that took place at The Avalon in Hollywood. Winners were decided by the Hollywood Music in Media Academy, which consists of journalists, filmmakers, performing artists, publicists, and other industry professionals.

The big winner was Jacques Audiard‘s Netflix musical “Emilia Pérez,” which claimed Best Music-Themed Film, Biopic, or Musical, where it beat other formidable awards contenders like “A Complete Unknown” and “Wicked.” The film’s star Zoe Saldaña also won Best Song (Onscreen Performance) for “El Mal,” defeating Timothee Chalamet playing Bob Dylan‘s “Blowin’ in the Wind” in “A Complete Unknown” and Cynthia Erivo belting out “Defying Gravity” in “Wicked.” Lastly, the film won Best Score (Feature Film) for Clément Ducol and Camille, bringing its total to three, making it the most awarded film of the year.

Hans Zimmer and Emilia Pérez took home three trophies each to lead the winners at the 2024 Hollywood Music in Media awards, which honor the year’s most memorable film and TV music moments. The Wild Robot was the only other multiple winner, taking a pair of prizes during Wednesday night’s ceremony at The Avalon in Hollywood.

Double Oscar winner and 12-time nominee Zimmer won for three different projects: Score – Sci-Fi/Fantasy for Dune: Part Two, Score – Documentary Series for Planet Earth III and Song – TV Show Limited Series for “Love Will Survive” from The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

Review: In my estimation, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator is one of the best historical dramas ever made. When it came out in 2000, it was immediately hailed as a classic, making star Russell Crowe a household name. In the twenty-four years since its release, it’s been often imitated but never equaled. Now, Ridley Scott is back for a lavish sequel, which is being rightly acclaimed as one of his best films in the last twenty years.

While Gladiator II isn’t the instant classic the original was, it’s nonetheless a highly entertaining, faithful sequel, jam-packed with action and spectacle.

NBC today announced its 2025 midseason premiere dates, including the new dramas Suits LA, from creator Aaron Korsh, The Hunting Party, starring Melissa Roxburgh (Manifest), and Grosse Pointe Garden Society, a soapy mystery from Jenny Bans and Bill Krebs. The schedule also includes the 10-part special event nature documentary The Americas, narrated by Tom Hanks with music by Oscar winner Hans Zimmer.

Returning to the NBC lineup is the three Chicago series, TV’s highest-rated drama franchise. The Windy City trifecta begins on Wednesday, Jan. 8, with Chicago Med at 8 p.m., followed by Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.

The series premiere of Suits LA is set for 9 pm Sunday, Feb. 23. Russell Crowe was not happy with Ridley Scott making a Gladiator sequel without his main character. However, Scott replaced Crowe with Paul Mescal and made Gladiator II, which will hit the US theaters on November 22. Early reviews are out and the film has a mixed reception, clearly hinting that it fell short of the original film.
