Presumably in an effort to make his own weed consumption seem restrained by comparison, this week Bill Maher hosted stoner legends Cheech and Chong in the subterranean museum of futile Boomer rage known as Club Random.
The two-hour-plus podcast cycled through a number of assorted topics, from Ridley Scott movies, to whether or not Donald Trump wears diapers, to Maher’s fear of TikTok. But the most interesting conversation concerned Tommy Chong’s 2003 arrest. The comedian was nabbed for selling bongs online, which actually resulted in jail time after he pled guilty in order to protect his son, who was also a part of the company.
According to Chong, this was all because of George W. Bush. “They had a hit on me. The Bush family,” Chong explained. When Maher questioned whether or not the president was trying to have the comedian killed, Chong clarified that he meant that his...

It looks like the next generation of Forman and friends won’t get to experience Y2K as Netflix has decided not to continue with episodes of That 90s Show. The sitcom was a legacy continuation of the popular Fox series That 70s Show, which ironically started a couple of years after when this last season of That 90s Show takes place. The news of Netflix’s cancellation was confirmed by one of the show’s stars, Kurtwood Smith, who portrays Red Forman, as he posted on his Instagram about the news.
This decision comes after the second season had released its part 3 batch of episodes on the streamer. It was a decision that seemed to be coming as, according to Deadline, part 2, which debuted on June 27, only cracked the Netflix Top 10 list once in its first full week of release, with 1.8 million views. Netflix would then movee up the...

What happens when Jay and Silent Bob crash a car into your grandparents’ kitchen while you’re spending your summer vacation at their house? Leia Forman (Callie Haverda) is about to find out when That ’90s Show returns for Part 3, with 10 new episodes directed by her TV mom, That ’70s Show star (and That ’90s Show guest star) Laura Prepon.
Well, sort of. To start, while Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes are dressed as their famous characters from Clerks, they’re not playing them on the 1996-set series. That would probably cause a tear in the time-space continuum, because Callie rents Clerks in Season 1. Instead, Smith plays Sonny, the son of Tommy Chong’s Leo, and Mewes plays his friend Bunch.

In David Hinton’s new documentary “Made in England: The Films of Powell & Pressburger,” Martin Scorsese talks about the profound influence the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger had on him.
A young, asthmatic Scorsese grew up largely an indoor child when American films weren’t licensed to television, so he feasted on the duo’s great British films like “The Red Shoes” and “Tales of Hoffmann.” Co-written and narrated by Scorsese, “Made in England” makes direct connections between a Powell and Pressburger film like “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp” and Scorsese’s “The Age of Innocence” and “Raging Bull.” In one remarkable sequence, Hinton even crosscuts between Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) from “Taxi Driver” and Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook) from “The Red Shoes,” as Scorsese narrates, “They’re both characters on the edge of things, listening, observing other people, always on the verge of exploding.

Tommy Chong has his cellphone pressed up tight against his ear, trying to find out where the person on the other end of the line is; at 85, his hearing isn’t what it used to be. Sitting across from him in the booth of a restaurant, located right off the lobby of an extremely busy hotel in downtown Austin, Texas, is Richard Marin. The 77-year-old actor is usually known by his nickname, “Cheech,” and he’s perusing the menu while his longtime partner loudly issues directions regarding where to meet up later.

Austin, TX – The depth and number of films at the SXSW Film & TV Festival portion of the week is nirvana for a film geek’s adventure. Here are three of the films I caught at SXSW … all led by familiar names and have high interest. “Arcadian,” “Gutter” and “Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie” … look for them in 2024.
Arcadian

This harkens back to the kid-in-dystopia craze from the young adult fiction adaptations … think “Hunger Games.” Nicolas Cage is Paul, a father who managed to save his two sons Joseph and Thomas (Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins) from a post-apocalyptic event. Holed up in a remote UK farm area, the trio fights off a band of creatures who are evolving and mutating … to rid the human virus from planet earth. This is the kid’s story, not Cage-as-Paul’s adventures, but as usual Nic adds the...

Austin, TX – One thing that SXSW attracts are movie stars. With the big premieres headquartered at the famous art deco Paramount Theatre in Austin, audiences were treated to appearances by the legendary Susan Sarandon (“Gutter”), a reunited Cheech & Chong, and for the creme de la creme we were in the “Cage.” The great Nicolas Cage appeared on behalf of “Arcadian.”

Susan Sarandon is an Oscar Winning (“Dead Man Walking”) and ultimate cult actress (the legendary Janet in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”). She made her inauspicious debut in the (naturally) cult hippie film “Joe” and has had memorable roles in “Pretty Baby,” “Atlantic City,” “The Hunger,” “Bull Durham,” “Thelma and Louise,” “Lorenzo’s Oil” “Robot & Frank” and most recently as the voice of Dr. Wong in “Rick and Morty.” She represented her latest star turn...

Cheech and Chong persist in the popular culture mainly as a metonym for stoner humor, but as any comedy fan knows, even the dumbest jokes — the one’s that can only be enjoyed while baked — don’t just appear out of smoke-filled air. “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie,” a new documentary chronicling the eponymous duo’s meteoric rise in the 1970s, emphasizes the sheer amount of work and determination it took to become one of America’s most popular comedy acts. Long before Seth Rogen was born, Cheech and Chong were the hardest-working potheads in Hollywood, even if they played exaggerated burnouts on screen and stage.
Alas, every success story comes with its fair share of complications. “Last Movie” also explores the financial headaches and managerial difficulties Cheech and Chong weathered at the height of their success, as well as the creative differences that ultimately drove the two men apart.

“Holy s—,” an audience member shouted as Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong took the stage at C-Boy’s Heart and Soul, an off-the-beaten path Austin nightclub that hosted a brief reunion by the legendary stoner comedy duo, who came to SXSW to shop their feature documentary “Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie.”
As the pair ambled on stage, Chong picked up an acoustic guitar and gave it a strum. Marin, 77, cringed as it became immediately clear that the instrument was woefully out of tune. Chong, 85, who wore a varsity sports jacket bedecked with marijuana leaf motifs and “Team 420” emblazoned on the back, changed it out for an electric Gibson that was camera-ready to play.
“Oooh, he’s going electric,” Marin joked. Chong hit a few more notes and then Marin introduced what he described as “a song of my people.” The tune was in keeping with Cheech and Chong’s classic routines of story songs.

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong first established their "wastoid" characters while working together in a Canadian improv troupe in the late 1960s. They first found success performing as "Cheech & Chong" as the opener for a touring bad. The story goes that Cheech & Chong were so funny, the band never came on stage. They began releasing their best bits on comedy albums starting with 1971's "Cheech and Chong," a must-have for comedy record collectors. Their bits were played by hip DJs, and they appeared regularly on "The Dr. Demento Show."
Their success was helped by a growing drug culture in the early 1970s. Cheech & Chong were stoners through and through, and their jokes hit harder for those who were under the influence. Those who are inexperienced with marijuana may not find Cheech & Chong terribly funny. The stoner shtick has continued to the present day, and now Marin and Chong have...

“Cheech and I were on the Paramount lot after we’d done the movie, and we’re kind of trying to figure out what we were going to do next— how we were going to get another movie going,” remembers Tommy Chong of the weeks following the 1978 release of Up in Smoke, the first film from him and comedy partner Cheech Marin. “And Warren Beatty, pulls up in his convertible. He took off his sunglasses and looked at us and he goes, ‘You guys have no idea what you’ve done.’ And we looked at each other like thinking, ‘Oh, what did we do?’ What we did was we pulled a movie out of thin air.”
Up in Smoke, which was made independently by principals with no filmmaking experience, grossed over $100 million at the box office, simultaneously launching and proving the commercial value of the genre, all in one go.

Inspiration strikes at the oddest times. Recently, I was watching Blumhouse's "Night Swim" and started thinking about all the strangest killer objects in the history of horror movies. "Where would a swimming pool rank on such a list," I pondered. "Would it rank lower or higher than a hungry bed?" These are the hard-hitting questions that race through my head, only eased by tasks like ranking all the craziest, head-scratchiest, most out-of-bounds killer objects in horror movie history.
We're not talking about flesh and blood killers or animal attackers. Even something like "Santa Jaws" is omitted from contention because while you could blame either the magical pen or sketchbook canvas that brings the Great White Santa to life, it's still a jingle-jangling shark gobbling up victims. This list is dedicated to deadly things that should not kill. Monstrous versions of household items that spring to life and slay the innocent with a most baffling reaction.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: This Is What You Get When Alpaca Etiquette Is Ignored
Every time I watch “Color Out of Space” I remember to celebrate the fact that none of my current responsibilities involve caring for alpacas (for either domestic or commercial purposes). Despite the off-brand llamas’ unofficial status as the Rolls Royce of even-toed ungulate mammals, Richard Stanley’s 2019 horror film makes raising them seem like an inconvenience that rivals the appearance of indescribable cosmic evils. Who on Earth has the time to examine unpasteurized alpaca milk for the presence of fennel?...

‘Blue Beetle’ Review: DC Superhero Origin Story Succeeds with a Mix of ’80s-Style VFX and Low Stakes
Is comic-book movie culture reaching a tipping point…into peak exhaustion? This summer, we’ve seen signs of that in the ho-hum box-office returns for “The Flash” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” To be fair, the mega-success of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has testified to the genre’s continuing appeal. Still, there are onscreen indicators that the superhero-movie audience, while it remains vast, might be entering the thrill-is-gone zone. As more and more of these films become cogs in a multiverse, their imaginative appeal tends to get trampled by the dictates of corporate world-building. (That “Ant-Man” sequel was designed to set up a saga of villainy longer than the Ring cycle.) Beyond that, it’s hard to escape the sensation that superhero films have become terminally top-heavy with self-importance. The fate of the cosmos seems to ride on almost every one of them.

Oceana celebrated its fifth annual Rock Under the Stars event Saturday night, highlighting ocean conservation with support from Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, Mary Steenburgen, Sam Waterston and headlining performer Gladys Knight.
The event, held at the Los Angeles home of Oceana board president Keith Addis and wife Keri Selig, had a particularly urgent message when tied with climate change, especially via this summer’s extreme heat and the Maui wildfires that have recently ravaged the island.
“We do what we do because things are going to be getting worse and worse,” Danson, an Oceana board member, told The Hollywood Reporter. “One of the reasons we keep doing what we’re doing is with climate change, the waters are heating, the fish are swimming north, corals are dying, so we feel an urgency to make sure we manage the fisheries that are so stressed out. Martin Scorsese was at a crossroads in 1985. The King of Comedy had tanked at the box office, and Paramount had recently pulled the plug on his passion project, The Last Temptation of Christ, weeks before production was set to begin. So when the script for After Hours came across his desk via actor-producer Griffin Dunne and producer Amy Robinson, who had appeared in Mean Streets, Scorsese jumped at the chance to helm a small-scale, low-budget black comedy set in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood.
After Hours comes full circle by opening and closing at the workplace of bored data entry drone Paul Hackett (Dunne). In between, Paul’s nightmarish nightlong odyssey sees him repeatedly returning to the same handful of locations and oddball individuals, spiraling ever deeper into an infernal realm of anxiety, paranoia, and free-floating guilt. In this regard, the film shares themes and motifs with other titles...
