Marlon Brando is often called one of the greatest actors in film history. Over six decades, he won many awards, including two Oscars, two Golden Globes, a Cannes Film Festival Award, three BAFTAs, and an Emmy. He helped bring the Stanislavski system and method acting into the spotlight, changing how acting was done in Hollywood.
Despite all his success, Brando admitted there was one role he deeply regretted. In his autobiography, he talked about his part in The Teahouse of the August Moon from 1956. He played Sakini, an interpreter on Okinawa, who spends most of the story facing off against Glenn Ford’s character, an American officer trying to introduce democracy and business to the island.
Brando admired the Broadway version of the play, especially David Wayne’s performance as Sakini.
He called it “a delicate, amusing comedy of manners set against the backdrop of a stormy clash of cultures.

Marlon Brando is often called one of the greatest actors in movie history. Over a career that lasted six decades, he won many big awards, including two Oscars and several Golden Globes. Brando is famous for bringing a new style of acting, called method acting, to a wide audience. But despite all his success, there was one role he deeply regretted taking.
In his autobiography, Brando talked about his role in the 1956 movie The Teahouse of the August Moon. He played Sakini, an interpreter on the island of Okinawa, who spends much of the film clashing with an American officer played by Glenn Ford.
Brando said, “In The Teahouse of the August Moon, I played an interpreter on Okinawa named Sakini, who spends most of the movie dueling with Glenn Ford, an American Army officer assigned to bring democracy and free enterprise to the island.”

Jimmy Hunt, the freckle-faced youngster who appeared in Pitfall, Sorry, Wrong Number, Cheaper by the Dozen, Invaders From Mars and 31 other features before he retired from acting at age 14, has died. He was 85.
Hunt suffered a heart attack six weeks ago and died Friday in a hospital in Simi Valley, his daughter-in-law Alisa Hunt told The Hollywood Reporter.
Hunt played William Gilbreth, one of the 12 offspring of an efficiency expert (Clifton Webb) and a psychologist (Myrna Loy), in Cheaper by the Dozen (1950), then returned to play another son in the family, Fred, in the sequel, Belles on the Toes (1952).
As an orphan, his character fueled the plot in The Mating of Millie (1948), a charming romantic comedy starring Evelyn Keyes and Glenn Ford, who taught him how to shoot marbles on the set. And in The Lone Hand (1953), Hunt portrayed the son of a widowed farmer (Joel McCrea) and served as...

The comic book universe would not have existed without the Man of Steel. Since his arrival in 1938, Superman has lorded over the fans as the ultimate superhero of all time. However, in live-action, the love and fanfare surrounding the character are not as ubiquitous and universal as in the comics.
Not only has Superman suffered through multiple controversies, but also caused enough rifts and divisions in the fandom of his live-action recreations to reinvent his iconic 100-year-old history. However, behind each of these live-action renditions lies an unquantifiable passion of filmmakers and actors who brought the character to the big screens through sweat, blood, and tears.
Here is a list of all the live-action movie renditions of the Man of Steel, ranked from shortest to longest in terms of runtime.

Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat opens on an image of a gun on a desk. A man standing behind the desk grasps the weapon and raises it to his head, pulling the trigger. Throughout this curt sequence, we only see the desk, the gun, the man’s hand, the back of his head, and a stuffed envelope that’s intended to explain his actions, and which will promptly be confiscated and hidden by another character.
This death sets forth a scuttling of human insects across The Big Heat. And it illuminates the already pitifully obvious collusion existing between an unnamed city’s government and the closest its criminal empire has to “old” money, which are the prosperous businessmen who made their wealth a few decades prior, selling booze and killing rivals during Prohibition, laundering their blue-collar viciousness into white-collar “respectability.”

Loretta Swit, the actress and animal activist forever known for her pioneering turn as the disciplined Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on the acclaimed CBS sitcom M*A*S*H, has died. She was 87.
According to a police report, Swit died just after midnight Friday of suspected natural causes at her home in New York City, her publicist, Harlan Boll, announced.
Swit won two Emmys for her portrayal of the Army nurse — she was nominated 10 times, every year the show was on the air except the first — and appeared on 240 of the series’ 251 episodes during its sensational 11-season run.
Adapting the character from Sally Kellerman‘s film portrayal of the lusty powerhouse, Swit was one of only two actors (along with Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce) to have a role in both the pilot and series finale of M*A*S*H.
That finale, which aired Feb. 28, 1983, attracted a record of nearly 106 million viewers, and a...

Taina Elg, the Finland-born actress and dancer who starred opposite Gene Kelly in the colorful 1957 George Cukor musical Les Girls and with Kenneth More in the 1959 remake of the spy thriller The 39 Steps, has died. She was 95.
Elg died May 15 in an assisted care facility in her native Helsinki, her family told the Helsinki Times.
On Broadway, Elg worked alongside Raul Julia in the 1974-75 revival of Frank Loesser’s Where’s Charley? — she earned a Tony nomination for best featured actress in a musical for that — and in the 1982-84 original production of Tommy Tune’s Nine, where she played the mother of his character, Guido.
Her breakthrough in Hollywood came with her turn as cabaret dancer Angèle Ducros in MGM’s Les Girls, which also starred Mitzi Gaynor and Kay Kendall and featured music from Cole Porter. She and Kendall shared the Golden Globe for best actress in...

John Wayne was riding remarkably high in the saddle in the early 1950s, knocking out one box office hit after another, when he decided to diversify his Hollywood profile by producing movies. So in 1952, the star of "Red River," "Sands of Iwo Jima," and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" hooked up with his longtime showbiz pal Robert Fellows, and together they founded Wayne-Fellows Productions. Wayne was picky about the people with whom he made movies, but Fellows more than earned his trust. According to Scott Eyman's "John Wayne: The Life and Legend," the Duke once said of Fellows, "What Bob doesn't know about the business isn't worth knowing."
Their first film together was the politically ignorant turkey "Big Jim McClain," which starred Wayne as a heroic special investigator for the House Un-American Activities Committee (Huac). In 1953, they released two movies,...

The Criterion Collection has announced their July 2025 slate of titles, delivering Stanley Kubrick, a film noir classic, an underrated New Hollywood gem, and more. Let’s check out what Criterion has in store:
First up is Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat (spine #1269), a scorcher of a noir that offers Glenn Ford and femme fatale Gloria Grahame in some of their finest performances (and don’t forget Lee Marvin!). With stellar black and white cinematography by Charles Lang (no relation), The Big Heat stands out in a decade crowded with some of the greatest film noirs ever. Special features include two new commentaries, an archival audio interview with director Lang (co-conducted by Peter Boganovich) and interviews with filmmakers Michael Mann and Martin Scorsese.
A pleasant addition is 1971’s Carnal Knowledge (spine #1270), one of just three Mike Nichols films featured in the collection. I always considered Carnal Knowledge one of the...

The Criterion Collection has shared with us the new round of releases coming this July, which boasts an impressive lineup of work from directors Stanley Kubrick, Fritz Lang, Mike Nichols, François Truffaut, and Kenneth Lonergan.
Lang’s genre-defining noir film “The Big Heat” is one of the big standouts in the announcement as it featured iconic actor Glenn Ford as the hard-boiled detective and a young Lee Marvin playing the thuggish heavy, a large calling card for these kinds of films is shocking violence and there is plenty to go around in this one.
Continue reading Criterion’s July 2025 Releases Include Stanely Kubrick’s ‘Barry Lyndon,’ ‘The Big Heat,’ ‘Adventures Of Antoine Doinel,’ ‘Carnal Knowledge’ & More at The Playlist.

Michael Fassbender is among the best actors of his generation and certainly among the most daring. While many of his contemporaries have settled into their own niches, Fassbender has shown an ability to try out many different genres and rarely fails to deliver a compelling performance. While Fassbender was briefly absent from the big screen over the last few years, he delivered a tremendous comeback performance in Steven Soderbergh’s twisty spy thriller “Black Bag,” which is already the best film of 2025 so far.
Fassbender may be known for the tremendous commitment he shows in his dramatic roles, but he has also developed a strong knack for comedy. Despite being regarded as one of the more artistically minded stars working today, Fassbender has managed to be a scene-stealer in two separate franchises, having played the mutant anti-hero Magneto in the rebooted “X-Men” series and the robot David in both “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant.

Marvin Levy, who spent five-plus decades handling public relations for Steven Spielberg and his films en route to becoming the only publicist to receive an Oscar, died Monday, an Amblin representative announced. He was 96.
Levy worked for MGM in New York and for Columbia Pictures in Hollywood, where he began his relationship with Spielberg on Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). The soft-spoken executive became a “Spielberg Whisperer,” offering counsel to the filmmaker.
In introducing Levy at the Governors Awards in November 2018, Tom Hanks noted that the publicist also advised Spielberg on films including E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), best picture winner Schindler’s List (1993), Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Lincoln (2012).
“Now, all those movies are pretty damn good, but I don’t think any of us in this room would have bothered seeing them without the efforts of Marvin Levy,” a cheeky Hanks said before the publicist came to the stage to accept his Oscar.

Depending on who you ask, Arizona is known as The Grand Canyon State and The Copper State. But if you ask us, it should also be called The Grand Cinema State or The Celluloid State, based on its proud filmmaking history. Given its proximity to Hollywood and stunning scenery that stretches for miles in every direction, Arizona has been the filming location for westerns, science fiction films, and pretty much every genre under the desert sun. In fact, Old Tucson Studios is known as the "Hollywood In The Desert," and was the site of movies and TV shows like "The Bells of St. Mary's, "Rio Bravo," "Gunsmoke," "Little House on the Prairie," and "Three Amigos!"
You're probably thinking, "Wait a minute, wasn't 'Three Amigos!' set in Mexico, 'Rio Bravo' in Texas, 'Bells of St. Mary's in the inner city?" Yep, you're right on all counts. From "Planet of the Apes,...

Harrison Ford stars as Jacob Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel 1923, which follows the Dutton family as they face the struggles of the early 20th century. For the legendary actor, the series was also a welcome return to the Western genre.
At the 1923 Season 2 premiere event, Ford spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about why he feels drawn to Westerns. "I love the viscerality of it, I love the physical nature of the storytelling, I love being in natural circumstances," the actor divulged. "A kind of old-fashioned movie-making mostly, no CGI or very little CGI - a little something to sweeten the location. But it’s really essential, old-time storytelling and I love working with this kind of material."

The remake of3:10 to Yuma released in 2007 stars Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, and Ben Foster and tells the classic Elmore Leonard story. 3:10 to Yuma came out exactly 50 years after the original movie based on the same story, the 1957 3:10 To Yuma starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin. While the 2007 version was highly praised, it lacks the gravitas of what Ford, Heflin, and the rest of the cast had done on screen decades earlier.
In 2007's 3:10 to Yuma, Crowe plays Ben Wade, the leader of a gang of outlaws, while Bale portrays Dan Evans, a Civil War veteran working on a ranch in the Arizona Territory during the 1880s. When Wade is arrested, circumstances arise that leave only Evans to make sure the outlaw boards the train to prison. The great state of Georgia has been home to an impressive number of film productions, including a number of Marvel Studios movies, but only a very small percentage of those are actually set in Georgia. Instead, the Atlanta streets frequently play the role of New York or Washington D.C., and its wild spaces can be used to represent just about anywhere.
But what about those movies that actually take place in the beautiful, complicated Peach State? Films as diverse and wonderful as "Magic Mike Xxl" and "Days of Thunder" all have great stretches set in Georgia, but some films go even further and really represent a little slice of the state with most of their runtime. Whether it's Clint Eastwood's genteel Savannah true crime murder mystery "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," having an aca-awesome time with college acapella performers in Atlanta in "Pitch Perfect," or...

What do Kim Novak, Jim Carrey, John Turturro, and the late Donald Sutherland all have in common? Well, aside from being acclaimed actors, these stars have never (we repeat: never) been nominated for an Academy Award. And that crime is now being celebrated by the annual anti-awards season festival, hosted by the Museum of the Moving Image.
The beloved museum announced its third iteration of the popular “Snubbed” screening series, which reexamines films that have been overlooked by the Academy. The 2025 theme is centered on actors and titled “Snubbed Forever: Great Actors, No Nominations.” The program will run February 1 through March 9, and feature 21 films starring actors who have never been nominated for an Oscar.
Highlights include Kim Novak in the enduring “Vertigo,” John Turturro and John Goodman in “Barton Fink,” Rita Hayworth in “The Lady from Shanghai,” Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and Danny DeVito in “Batman Returns.

Over nine decades, the story of Superman unfolded in comics, radio drama, animation and live-action films and shows. Keeping the Man of Steel's story fresh through all this time is challenging, especially when each iteration has to hit certain specific story beats. By defying one of those, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman gave viewers the best Pa Kent in live action as played by Eddie Jones.

A Time for Killing is a 1967 Western film that is more of a grim look at war and revenge than it is a rollicking shootout in the American frontier. Also known as The Long Ride Home, A Time For Killing is a Civil War Western set in a Union prisoner-of-war camp near the Mexican border where Major Tom Wolcott (Glenn Ford) is in charge of an inept group of Union guards and scheming Confederate prisoners. The prisoners are led by Captain Dorrit Bentley (George Hamilton), a Southern gentleman who is not as gallant as he would like to believe.
Along with being Harrison Ford's first credited movie role as Lt. Shaffer, A Time for Killing is best known for switching directors early in production. The film was first set to be directed by B-movie legend, Roger Corman, who left after reported fights with Columbia Studios, who grew frustrated with...

Despite not boasting widespread recognition in the modern era, The Big Heat remains one of the greatest big-screen revenge stories ever told. Released in 1952, The Big Heat is a celebrated film noir featuring three major names in Hollywood: Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame, and Lee Marvin. Glenn Ford, an actor who helped headline some of the best film noir movies of all time, played the lead role of Detective Dave Bannion, the subject of The Big Heat's revenge narrative.
Revenge is among the most common motifs in Hollywood films, with Westerns and crime thrillers utilizing it regularly for decades. Over the years, bloody crusades to right a wrong have delivered all sorts of riveting adventures, ranging from High Plains Drifter to John Wick. Older movies, even those bound by numerous content restrictions, have also found great success in making a quest for vengeance the central focus of a story. In fact,...

“There was an idea,” Nick Fury says in Avengers, “an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more. To see if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could.” Just like Fury, producer Kevin Feige and his associates had an idea in the 2000s. They were unhappy about the fact that Marvel made very little profit from the licensing deals it had with other studios. They wanted the lion’s share, while also maintaining artistic control of the productions as well as the distribution. Opting out of the licensing deals would be hard, but Feige realized that Marvel still owned the rights to many of the Avengers members who were deemed unpopular.

For viewers who enjoyed Clint Eastwood’s 1985 western Pale Rider, one underrated ‘60s movie starring Glenn Ford is well worth a watch. Pale Rider is unique among Clint Eastwood’s many Western movies as the 1985 revenge story sees the director and star toy with supernatural elements more explicitly than ever before. When a family is driven out of their hometown by a mining magnate’s hired goons, a mysterious drifter appears to assist them in standing up to the money-hungry developers. Eastwood himself admitted that his title character was a ghost, lending the Western movie a rare air of paranormal flair.

Since the early days of film, the Western genre has been a staple of the cinema world. Audiences around the world love tuning in for these stories of the West, often featuring cowboys, outlaws, and the sprawling settings of the American frontier. Of course, because of these factors, violence is often a very prominent element of these films. Many Western fans love when the dramatic showdowns between good and evil culminate in violent gunfights, explosions, and all-around calamity. However, it is essential to note that these aspects of the genre are not everyone's cup of tea.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of enjoyable Westerns that don't rely on these explosive elements. From beloved classics to modern stories, many films highlight the essential characters and settings of the genre without diving too deep into the violent side of life on the frontier. The 1957 classic Western 3:10 to Yuma starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin is headed to Tubi on Dec. 1 for audiences to stream for free. Heflin stars as a poor rancher named Dan Evans who is hired by a stagecoach line to put the outlaw Ben Wade on the 3:10 train to Yuma while Wades gang tries desperately to free him.
The original film, directed by Delmer Daves, which inspired a 2007 remake starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, focuses on a working-class protagonist in the late 1800s, as opposed to the typical outlaw or lawman in traditional Western movies of the day. The 2007 film has been regarded by some as the greatest remake of a Western movie.

Often cited as one of the best actors of all time, Sidney Poitier has an incredible filmography full of important career-defining films. His filmography is vast, and while some are considered the best of Sidney Poitier's films, others simply represent some of the most important moments in his career as an actor, director, and filmmaker. Regardless of where they fall in the timeline of his life, each film represents a notable step to becoming the legend that Poitier is known as today.
Born February 20th, 1927, Poitier appeared in over 50 films. These movies include everything from tense thrillers to softer romantic dramas, and he gave a compelling performance in each one. It seems as though great Westerns were made in droves during the classical Hollywood era. More recently, masterful contemporary Westerns seem less common. There's been a gem here and there with films like Tombstone, No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood and Django Unchained. However, they often seem far and few between in more recent Hollywood filmmaking. All of these films have the same things in common: they are wholly original concepts that reflect the visions of their directors.
What's even less common is for a remake to resonate as much as or more than the classical Hollywood original. Yet, that's exactly what happened when James Mangold helmed a Western gem in 2007. While the original 3:10 to Yuma from 1957 is a forever classic, the 2007 remake is a deeper construction of one of the great morality tales ever.

Halloween is almost upon us, which means that The Simpsons’ beloved annual special “Treehouse of Horror” is only lagging behind the holiday by a couple of days.
Thanks to Fox’s annoying insistence that broadcasting the World Series is more important than airing a Halloween-themed, EC Comics Horror tales-inspired Simpsons episode within a timeframe that makes any amount of sense, “Treehouse of Horror Xxxv” will not air until November 3, 2024, meaning that the we won’t get to see which Twitter trend got the satirical, supernatural, alternate reality treatment until all the tricks and treats have concluded and even the most intense Halloween bender has crusted over into a near-fatal hangover.
Thankfully, the most hallowed annual tradition in adult animation has a healthy backlog of 34 (or Xxxiv) total “Treehouse of Horror” episodes for the fandom to compare, contrast and complain about how the old episodes were so much better than this new crap.

John Wayne and Clint Eastwood are arguably the two biggest western movie stars, but they made very different westerns and had very strong opinions about each others films. Throughout Hollywoods storied history with the western, plenty of iconic actors have put their stamp on the genre Henry Fonda, Gary Cooper, James Stewart, Lee Van Cleef, Glenn Ford, Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin, the list goes on but Wayne and Eastwood are the two actors that defined the genre. And not only that, they each defined completely different eras of the genre.
Like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger or Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel, Wayne and Eastwood had one of the most famous celebrity feuds in Hollywood history. But Wayne and Eastwoods feud wasnt based on any personal differences; it was based on their ideological differences and their vastly dissimilar approaches to the Western genre. My favorite performance of Glenn Ford's career can be found in Ransom!, the original version of a popular Mel Gibson action movie from the 1990s. One of several Mel Gibson movies set in the action genre, 1996's Ransom explored the efforts of a married, millionaire father to rescue his son, who had been taken by kidnappers. In the dramatic thriller, Gibson's character refuses to pay the ransom demanded for his son's release, setting up a huge conflict with the kidnappers.
Decades before Ransom paired A-list Hollywood star Mel Gibson with Rene Russo in a cast that also included Gary Sinese and Delroy Lindo, Glenn Ford starred in an adaptation of the same story, which originated as a stage play. In 1956, Ford appeared in Ransom! as David Stannard, a rich businessman whose son is kidnapped from school. It's an admittedly lesser-known entry and arguably not as famous as the Gibson version,...

Russell Crowe and Christian Bales 2007 remake of 3:10 to Yuma is now streaming on Netflix and its even greater than the classic original movie from 1957. 3:10 to Yuma was director James Mangolds follow-up to his Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. It was Mangolds most action-packed movie up to that point, and the action filmmaking chops he developed on 3:10 to Yuma would serve him well when he took on big-budget blockbusters like Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in the years that followed. 3:10 to Yuma remains one of his finest movies.

The remake of 3:10 to Yuma features an incredibly impressive cast of stars and character actors. Based on a short story that also inspired a 1957 Glenn Ford and Van Heflin film of the same name, 3:10 to Yuma is a compelling character drama filtered through the lense of a western adventure. The film is largely about Ben Wade, a dangerous criminal in the wild west who is unexpectedly captured. Tasked with bringing him to a 3:10 train departing to a courthouse and potential jailtime is the rancher Dan Evans.
The James Mangold-directed 3: 10 to Yuma is a compelling character study bolstered by strong supporting performances on all sides. This film cast two of Hollywood's most enduring modern stars in the lead roles, and fleshed out the rest of the characters with impressive character actors. It all comes togeter for one of the best western remakes ever, and a strong modern example of the genre.

Superman has been one of the most important figures in the DC Universe since his first appearance in 1938. Everything known about DC Studios' Superman reboot suggests that the character's legacy will remain critical to his future. This means that exploring that legacy and pulling apart details from the hero's previous movies may be critical to understanding his future. While Superman has undoubtedly evolved and changed through the years, understanding the words used both by him and to describe him can help to place the iconic hero in context.

One of the most critically acclaimed Western movie remakes is coming to Netflix on September 1, as James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma lands on the biggest streaming platform. Based on Elmore Leonard's 1953 story "Three-Ten to Yuma" - whose first movie adaptation in 1957 drew comparisons to Western classic High Noon - the 2007 remake assembled a stunning cast.
Russell Crowe and Christian Bale play men on opposite sides of the moral divide, with Bale's former military man Dan Evans charged with escorting Crowe's murderous gang leader Ben Wade to a train to Yuma Territorial Prison. What follows is a tense 122-minute Western drama, surpassed only by True Grit as the most critically lauded remake of a Western movie. 3:10 To Yuma's arrival on Netflix on September 1 makes it an essential watch for all Western fans.
Did You Know: Tom Cruise reportedly expressed interest in playing Ben Wade when Russell Crowe was initially unavailable.

One of the most underrated westerns of the last 20 years is coming to Netflix, featuring an Oscar-winning cast and one of Hollywood's most acclaimed directors. 3:10 to Yuma stars Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, and is directed by James Mangold to boot. It features all the tropes of an iconic film noir, complete with a no-nonsense police officer, femme fatale love interest, and fast-talking, double-crossing murder mysteries.

Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.
Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.
They hate each other, but as we all know, that’s often a prelude on the road to love both in real and reel life.

Vidor also uses the vocabulary of dance to signal Gilda’s emotional temperature.

[Editor’s note: The following includes spoilers for “Sugar.”]
“Sugar” is a neo-noir television series set in modern-day Los Angeles, featuring private investigator John Sugar (Colin Farrell), who, in addition to being very good at his job, is also a huge movie buff. Sugar’s latest case, to find the missing granddaughter of legendary movie producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), only sends him even further down the path of Hollywood lore.
Throughout the eight episodes of Season 1, Sugar’s journey to find Olivia reminds him of scenes from some of his favorite classic films, which are intercut into the series as if we are seeing little flashes of what is racing through Sugar’s mind.
“It was all done after the fact, so I had no idea until I saw it how many [and] which clips [they used],” Farrell told IndieWire, adding he was pleasantly surprised to see himself juxtaposed with some of his all-time favorite films, like “Sunset Boulevard” and “The Maltese Falcon.

Black-and-white Westerns showcase timeless stories, iconic stars, and beautiful imagery with historical and cultural significance. Directors like John Ford crafted classics like 'My Darling Clementine' that delved into Old West legends with depth and respect. Unique films like 'Dead Man' in 1995 continued the black-and-white tradition, offering new perspectives on Western themes.
The Western genre of filmmaking was full of so many incredible black-and-white movies that showcased the enthralling stories of cowboys, gunslingers, and outlaws. While many Western movies have utilized the power of color to showcase beautiful depictions of scenic landscapes as a highly picturesque view of America was presented onscreen, plenty more have traded color for the effective impact of black-and-white filmmaking. While this was a necessity in the early days of Hollywood, as color took over as the primary style of moviemaking, black-and-white films became a more intentional stylistic choice.

“You know you can watch that at home, right?” Such was the advice directed my way by a wisecracking passerby while queued up for a screening at the 2024 Turner Classic Movies Film Festival in Hollywood, California. They were clearly not a festival passholder, but the indifference heard right there on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was another instance of the trampling of history that both the festival and its parent channel aim to counter.
Probably the most even-handed response to that trampling would be a reminder—to flip a well-known phrase—that a home is not a house (not a movie house anyway). The folks who flock to Los Angeles every year from all over the world to attend this festival, probably all subscribers or rabid devotees of the channel that bears its name, cough up a prodigious amount of money to do so. It’s clear that for them,...
