Image
Stars: Hazel O’Connor, Phil Daniels, Jon Finch, Jonathan Pryce, Peter-Hugo Daly, Mark Wingett | Written and Directed by Brian Gibson

Punk music burst on the scene in the mid-70s. It took the world by storm, and it made superstars and legends of groups like The Ramones, Blondie, The Patti Smith Group, The Talking Heads, The B-52’s, Suicide, Mink DeVille, The Fleshtones.

In 1980, the gritty underworld of post-punk Britain was captured on film with Breaking Glass; and this year the film is celebrating its 45th anniversary! And Fun City Editions was not going to let this epic anniversary go by without a wonderful Blu-ray release.

A rebellious young singer-songwriter Kate Crowley (Hazel O’Connor) is determined to rise to the top of the music profession. Kate’s socialist ideals are juxtaposed to her pragmatic rock manager, Danny, the streetwise hustler who discovers her and develops her into a star. The...

Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) Review
Image
The success of the original Poltergeist (1982), a masterful blend of suburban anxiety and supernatural terror, seemed to guarantee a rich future for the franchise. Directed by Tobe Hooper and famously guided by Steven Spielberg, the film remains a textbook case of how to balance heart-pounding scares with moments of familial tenderness. By contrast, Poltergeist II: The Other Side has always felt like a pale echo of its predecessor – a sequel that revisits familiar territory but struggles to carve out its own identity.

Set a year after the events of the original, Poltergeist II finds the Freeling family – Diane (JoBeth Williams), Steven (Craig T. Nelson), Robbie (Oliver Robins), and the ever-captivating Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) – attempting to rebuild their lives. Now living with Diane’s mother, they’re haunted not just by the memories of their spectral ordeal but by literal ghosts who refuse to let go. Their suburban nightmare is far from over.

Chick-Fil-a Lifts The Lid On Entertainment Plans
Image
Chick-Fil-a has revealed more details about its move into the entertainment business.

Earlier this summer, Deadline broke the news that the fast-food company had started commissioning original content.

The chicken firm is launching Chick-Fil-a Play on November 18. It said that the service was “designed for parents and kids to share and experience together whether they’re enjoying a meal at home, in the drive-thru, or anywhere in- between”.

It will launch with a number of original animated shows, including Evergreen Hills and Chick-fil-A Cows, scripted podcasts including Hidden Island, a handful of cooking shows and interactive stories.

“Hospitality and fun have always been at the core of the Chick-fil-a family experience, whether inside our Restaurants and play areas, or through our Kids Meals,” said Dustin Britt, executive director of brand strategy. “The Chick-fil-a Play App is a digital extension of that experience and another way we’re reimagining play for our guests,...

We Need To Give Athena Grant the Key to the City After That '9-1-1' Episode!
Image
From embodying Tina Turner in Brian Gibson's What's Love Got to Do with It to playing a queen of a nation in Ryan Coogler's Black Panther films, Angela Bassett has proven time and time again what a talented actress she is. But the role that isn't talked about enough is her performance as Athena Grant in 9-1-1, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear. As a Field Sergeant for the Los Angeles Police Department, Athena puts her life on the line to protect and serve the people of L.A.

Poltergeist's Scariest Villain Has a Fascinating Backstory
Image
With the recent reveal of the showrunners behind the upcoming Poltergeist television series, fans may be missing the beloved actors who won't be able to join the show. Among the cast members who passed during the production of the original trilogy is Julian Beck, whose performance as the ghostly Preacher Kane was the most terrifying part of Poltergeist 2: The Other Side. That was Beck's best-known screen role, but on the stage, he was the co-founder of The Living Theatre, a legendary performance group whose activities shocked a generation.

The Poltergeist franchise began with the 1982 classic that combined director Tobe Hooper's flair for scares with producer Stephen Spielberg's friendly warmth. The successful film was followed by Poltergeist 2: The Other Side (1985) and Poltergeist 3 (1988). While these sequels did not fare as well as the original, they created an iconic villain in the Preacher Kane. This grim specter traumatized...

Thrasher Review: A Sensory Odyssey Through Surreal Worlds
Image
Thrasher comes from the creative minds behind Thumper, an experimental VR rhythm game released in 2016. Thumper introduced an intoxicating blend of pulsing beats, hypnotic visuals, and tense gameplay that challenged players to keep rhythm or face digital destruction. While Thumper stood alone, Thrasher carries on its spirit of inventive music-driven experience.

Taking the reins of a lithe space eel, players guide it through surreal dreamscapes filled with geometric objects. Some objects shatter when passed through, collecting them to complete each “wave” within the time limit. But beware drifting red decoys that drain time on contact. As challenging frequencies and objects accelerate, maintaining flow grows harder. Power-ups aid the mission, but careless mistakes bring nemesis near.

Across surreal worlds reminiscent of sci-fi classics, players twirl their electronic companion in unison with thumping techno beats. Communicating kinetic rhythm, the experience immerses through synesthetic sensory overload.

While early stages introduce gentle play, mastery...

Netflix could soon have streaming competition from... Chick-fil-a?
Image
Chick-fil-a+. How does that sound? Is it catchy? That might just be the name of a new streaming service in the future. Yes, we're talking about the Chick-fil-a that serves some of the best chicken sandwiches and waffle fries you could ever eat!

The popular fast food restaurant chain is looking to join the streaming wars by launching its own streaming service. Who would've thought this would ever happen? We didn't see this coming at all. Like Netflix, Chic-fil-a will be creating original content as well as licensing and acquiring content for its streaming platform.

An official name for the streamer has not been announced yet, but the fast food company has reportedly been talking and working with major production companies on creating family-friendly, unscripted original shows. One show that's currently in the works and has been given a 10-episode order by Chick-fil-a is an upcoming game show from Glassman Media (The Wall) and Sugar23.

Chick-Fil-a’s streaming service will offer family friendly programming (even on Sundays)
Image
Chick-Fil-a is serving up a new side dish to go along with its waffle fries and lemonade. The chicken chain is cooking up its own streaming service, which will deliver a slate of family-friendly originals.

According to a report from Deadline, the Chick-Fil-a streaming service will offer a mix of original and licensed content. Programming exec Brian Gibson is heading Chick-Fil-a’s push, which features budgets that are reportedly in the $400,000-per-half-hour range.

The originals, many of which will be unscripted shows, will be developed in tandem with production companies. One rumored program is a ten-episode game show from Glassman Media (NBC’s The Wall), and Sugar23 (Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why).

The idea of a streaming service branded by Chick-Fil-a has encountered its fair share of mockery and skepticism in the press, but the Georgia-based fast food empire is not the first consumer brand to develop its own programming hub.

Chick-Fil-a Is Launching A Streaming Platform And No, This Is Not A Joke, Sorry
Image
Hey, quick question ... what the cluck is happening?

Just as multiple streaming platforms have begun offering subscription bundle plans and the Streaming Wars seem to finally be over — a wildly unexpected force has entered late in the game with hopes of shaking things up, funded not by Big Tech, but by Big Fundamentalist Pickle-Brined Fried Chicken. I swear on my life this is not a headline from The Onion come to life, but as first reported by Deadline, Chick-fil-a is launching its own streaming service. I'm already offering my deepest condolences to the first creative who earns the inevitable call from their reps saying, "Chick-fil-A passed" when their project is rejected.

I, and I cannot stress this enough, absolutely despise this announcement, but I will hate it a little bit less if they're at least willing to commit to the bit and call it "Flick-fil-a." Chick-fil-A's...

Angela Bassett Says Laurence Fishburne Shut Down Long Hours on Rape Scene for ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’
Image
Angela Bassett credits Laurence Fishburne for keeping her sane on set of intense 1993 Tina Turner biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It?.”

Bassett, who received her first Oscar nomination for portraying rock legend Tina onscreen, told Variety during the 30th anniversary of the film that Fishburne stepped in when production got “out of hand,” such as filming a rape scene between Tina (Bassett) and husband Ike Turner (Fishburne) for 16 hours.

“We were not willing to do what history had shown us on set over the last few months, that we would do it over and over and over again for 16 hours. I wasn’t willing to do that,” Bassett said of filming the assault scene. “And I knew I couldn’t ask the director [Brian Gibson] because, here I am as a new actor, but I could talk to Laurence. So Laurence asked me, ‘How many times you want to do this?...

Santa Barbara Film Fest: Angela Bassett Calls ‘Wakanda Forever’ the “Representation That I Longed for When I Was a Young Actor Coming Up”

“That representation that I longed for when I was a young actor coming up? Angela Bassett Had to Shoot Difficult ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It?’ Scenes ‘Over and Over Again’
Image
Nearly 20 years after her first Oscar nomination, Best Supporting Actress contender Angela Bassett revealed at the 2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival that shooting “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” was way more grueling on her than most people may have realized.

“We would do scenes over and over and over again,” said the actress on stage at the Arlington Theater on Thursday night, recalling the making of the 1993 Tina Turner biopic. “Those concert scenes, literally you feel like you have a sweater in your throat after performing, and we would do it [again] from top to bottom.”

Though she is now able to joke about it, Bassett did not mince words describing the challenges that came with being directed by English filmmaker Brian Gibson. “He’d say, ‘Ok, let’s do it again.’ I was like, ‘Can an actor have a moment? Just 60 seconds, a minute, please, just to catch our breath.

Golden Globes flashback: Angela Bassett thanks ‘national treasure’ Tina Turner during acceptance speech [Watch]
Image
With her Golden Globe nomination this year for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022), Angela Bassett now has a chance to win a bookend trophy to the one she first claimed 29 years ago for “What’s Love Got to Do with It” (1993). That popular musical biopic was based on the life of Tina Turner, with Bassett portraying the superstar and Laurence Fishburne taking on the role of her husband, Ike Turner. During her [relatively short] acceptance speech, the actress made sure to give Turner, whom she dubbed a “national treasure,” a shout-out at the podium. Watch the Golden Globes flashback video above.

“Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press for honoring me so wonderfully this evening and for finding favor in my portrayal of Tina Turner,” Bassett proclaimed after the applause died down. “Thank you, my director Brian Gibson. Laurence Fishburne (John Wick: Chapter 4) and Clifton Collins Jr. (Nightmare Alley) have signed on to star in the upcoming film Frank & Louis, which Petra Volpe is directing for Participant, Zodiac Pictures and Tyler Perry’s Peachtree & Vine Productions.

In Frank & Louis, a man serving a life sentence (Collins) takes an in-prison job caring for aging and infirm prisoners suffering from memory loss diseases—including one played by Fishburne. What starts as a self-serving mission for parole turns into a deep emotional and transformative relationship, offering a glimmer of redemption in an otherwise unforgiving place.

Volpe and Esther Bernstorff wrote the script. Participant will produce alongside Reto Schaerli and Lukas Hobi of Zodiac Pictures, and Perry and Tim Palen of Peachtree & Vine. Cora Olson is co-producing, with Jeff Skoll and Anikah McLaren of Participant serving as exec producers. McLaren, Elizabeth Haggard and Connor DeSha will oversee the project for Participant.

But Kane had an ulterior motive. “I was at Universal in the early 90s and I heard about Poltergeist 4,” industry insider Macklin Crux told the site. “Someone told me about a new script that was being developed about the pre-story: Kane and his followers.

Day of the Dead Movie List: Top 5 Most Freakish Living Dead, Undead, and Ghosts
Hell's Kitchen: Soul stew image likely from the 1922 Benjamin Christensen horror classic 'Häxan / Witchcraft Through the Ages.' Day of the Dead post: Cinema's Top Five Scariest Living Dead We should all be eternally grateful to the pagans, who had the foresight to come up with many (most?) of the overworked Western world's religious holidays. The latter two are public holidays in a number of countries with large Catholic populations. Since today marks the end of the annual Halloween / All Saints' Day / Day of the Dead celebrations, I'm posting my revised and expanded list of the movies' Top Five Scariest Living Dead. Of course, by that I don't mean the actors listed below were dead when the movies were made.
