Keanu Reeves Seeks Peace in 4K Restoration Trailer for Bernardo Bertolucci’s Little Buddha
Image
As Keanu Reeves plans a reunion with Sandra Bullock, it’s an opportune time to revisit one of his early career gems. Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1993 drama Little Buddha, starring the actor as Siddhartha, has been restored in 4K by Cinecitta from the separation masters under the supervision of cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. With a theatrical run beginning on May 9 in NYC at IFC Center, and May 16 in LA at Laemmle Glendale, with a national expansion to select cities to follow, Kino Lorber has now unveiled the new trailer and poster.

Here’s the synopsis: “Drawing on Buddhist history to weave a metaphor about the tragedy of Tibetans in exile, Little Buddha is Bernardo Bertolucci’s stunning follow-up to The Sheltering Sky. In this religious tour-de-fource, a Buddhist monk, Lama Norbu (Ying Ruocheng), believes that a 10-year-old American boy, Jesse (Alex Wiesendanger), is the reincarnation of his spiritual teacher, Lama Dorje. Jim Carrey Defended Cameron Diaz From Creepy Chris Isaak
Image
No one should shed a tear for companies like Spectrum, Cox and Comcast as the bloated business of basic cable goes belly up. But pour one out for us — we lost something amazing when early cable mainstays like MTV switched from music videos and trashy reality shows to a round-the-clock diet of Ridiculousness. Specifically, we’ve been deprived of the unpredictable madness of the early MTV Movie Awards.

In the early ‘90s, no comedy star was on a bigger heater than Jim Carrey, delivering Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask in the span of a single calendar year. The most unlikely hit might have been The Mask, in which Carrey’s bumbling Stanley Ipkiss uses his newfound superpowers to rescue a nightclub singer, played by Cameron Diaz, from the clutches of sleazy gangsters.

Carrey was nominated for five MTV Movie Awards in 1995, sometimes competing against himself in the same category.

A treasure trove of episodes of MTV Unplugged, VH1 Storytellers, and CMT Crossroads are streaming on Paramount+
Image
Attention, MTV Generation, your ship has come in! Paramount+ is opening the floodgates to bring classic episodes of MTV Unplugged, VH1 Storytellers, and CMT Crossroads to the streaming platform. Paramount+ Releases 100s of Iconic 'MTV Unplugged' Performances
Image
Paramount+ is ready to rock — and they've released over 125 episodes of musical performances to its streaming service to prove it. Coming at you from the other Viacom-owned properties like MTV Unplugged, VH1 Storytellers, and CMT Crossroads, many of the episodes haven't been seen since they first aired. And with a list of performances that includes the likes of Elton John, Neil Young, Mariah Carey, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, and even Nirvana's now-iconic November 1993 performance — which aired a mere seven months before the singer Kurt Cobain died — the list is a treasure trove for any music fan.

According to a press release from the streamer, more than 70 of the episodes have not been available to the public for more than 20 years. And, considering how much purging of content Paramount Global has done over the years, it's a relief to see that some things still get saved in the digital age.

Empire Celebrates David Lynch With Twin Peaks-Inspired Subscriber Cover
Image
On 15 January, the cinematic world shifted off its axis. At the age of 78, David Lynch passed away – a true pioneer, a complete one-off, whose big-screen (and small-screen) masterpieces never failed to transport us somewhere else; often directly into Lynch’s own singular brain. His work was surreal, uncompromising, challenging, engrossing, and always, always visionary, translating dreamlike ideas into pure celluloid. When news of his passing arrived, Team Empire wanted to do something special to celebrate his life and legacy – not only delivering the ultimate tribute to Lynch inside the new issue of Empire magazine, but putting him on the subscriber cover of our April 2025 issue.

The cover, illustrated exclusively for Empire by Edward Tuckwell, pictures Lynch in Twin Peaks’ iconic Red Room, walking on that black-and-white zigzag floor towards those mysterious crimson curtains. That Lynch has left us is hard to comprehend; that he leaves behind such an astonishing body of work is a joy.

“I knew he was sick but I hoped he might make a comeback,” Isaak wrote on X. “I feel lucky for all the time I got to spend with him, he was one of a kind. He was so smart, so creative, and he had a way of being very honest and direct that reminded me of how kids say things…innocent without doubletalk or bumpers.”

Isaak has long been associated with Lynch,...

Nicolas Cage On Death Of His ‘Wild At Heart’ Director David Lynch: “I Never Had More Fun On A Film Set”
Image
Exclusive: The star of David Lynch’s Palme d’Or winning 1990 road trip bender, Wild at Heart, Nicolas Cage tells us that the late filmmaker who died today, “was a singular genius in cinema, one of the greatest artists of this or any time.”

“He was brave, brilliant, and a maverick with a joyful sense of humor,” Cage continues, “I never had more fun on a film set than working with David Lynch. He will always be solid gold.”

In the movie, which was shot in New Orleans and Louisiana, Cage plays an Elvis-like character, Sailor, an ex-con, recently from prison who reunites with the love of his life, Lula, played by Laura Dern, who broke out in Lynch’s Blue Velvet. The problem in their lives remains Lula’s notorious mother (played by Dern’s real life mom Diane Ladd) who sends hitman and detectives on Sailor and Lula...

Aubrey Plaza
John Waters’ Liarmouth no longer happening
Aubrey Plaza
Liarmouth was set to star Aubrey Plaza, and be the first John Waters film for 20 years. It’s now not set to be.

John Waters hasn’t made a film in 20 years, so it was exciting to hear back in 2022 that he was set to bring his demented brand of comedy back to the silver screen, along with Aubrey Plaza, a gifted comic actor with whom the filmmaker would surely have created something special.

Sadly, that’s not to be as Waters has revealed (courtesy of World Of Reel) that the project is no longer happening. Funding seems to be the source of the issue, with Waters telling Indie Wire that:

“I wrote the script, they liked it, Aubrey [Plaza] likes the script, wants to be in it, I want her to be in it, and every person said, “No, we don’t have a penny of the budget.” That is where it is today.

This 22-Year-Old Movie Is David Lynchs Polarizing Masterpiece
Image
Few TV series have enjoyed the acclaim of Twin Peaks, and even fewer have experienced such a speedy demise. Debuting on the ABC network in 1990, the show became a surprise phenomenon, earning some of the most glowing reviews in TV history. But by 1991, the luster had faded. Twin Peaks Season 2's ratings plummeted, and the show landed on the chopping block. Naturally, eyebrows in Hollywood were raised when series co-creator David Lynch announced a cinematic continuation of the dead series on the big screen: Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

Twin Peaks mania began with a singular question: who killed Laura Palmer? The series chronicled the investigation of FBI Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) into the murder of local homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) in the eponymous, peculiar small town. This whodunit storyline, coupled with Lynch's art-house sensibilities, generated frenzied interest in Twin Peaks' first season. Viewer interest swan dove,...

However, it was not the first time, Carrey expressed his disregard for inappropriate on-stage behavior, as the actor did for his former co-star Cameron Diaz, earlier at the 1995 MTV Movie Awards.

Jim Carrey Criticized Will Smith’s 2022 Oscars Slap

The 2022 Academy Awards will always be remembered for Will Smith’s unexpected and controversial moment when he took the stage to slap Chris Rock. Despite the incident, the ceremony continued with Smith eventually winning the Best Actor Oscar the same night,...

10 Best Song Uses In Movie Trailers
Image
Music in movie trailers can make or break the film, as it sets the tone and draws in the audience effectively. Choosing the right song for a trailer can add emotion and depth to a scene, enhancing the overall viewing experience. Familiar songs in trailers can create a sense of nostalgia and intrigue, keeping viewers engaged and interested in the film.

Although movie trailers are a form of marketing, they have evolved to be an art form in and of themselves, leading to exciting music choices. Scoring and soundtrack decisions can make or break a piece of cinema, and this starts with the trailer. Some of this comes down to budget, as the more high-profile a song is, the more expensive it will be. However, there are instances when musicians appreciate the art and allow their work to be featured in a lower-budget project. This can be a saving grace...

TCM’s ‘Great Composers’ Series Turns a Spotlight on the Movies’ Maestros
Image
When TCM channel host Dave Karger used to be a writer for Entertainment Weekly in his early days as a print journalist, he would focus a great deal on interviewing the big pop stars of the day, along with his duties on the film beat. But little did very many people suspect then that what he really wanted to be writing about was “Laura”… not Branigan, but David Raksin’s music for the classic 1945 noir. That was the film that really prompted Karger’s lifelong love of movie scoring.

“His score for ‘Laura’ really turned me on to classic film music, and film scores in general,” says Karger. “And then you go back and you learn that in 1945, there were 20 Oscar nominees that year in the category of best score for a non-musical film — and David Raksin wasn’t even one of the 20 nominees. That’s a score that has...

Aubrey Plaza to star in John Waters’ Liarmouth
Aubrey Plaza
Aubrey Plaza will lead the cast of ‘Feel-Bad’ romance Liarmouth, which marks John Waters’ first directorial outing in two decades.

John Waters hasn’t made a film in 20 years, but he’s set to bring his demented brand of comedy back to the silver screen, along with a leading actor who should prove equal to his ambitions.

Waters’ last film was 2004’s A Dirty Shame which starred Tracy Ullman, Johnny Knoxville and Chris Isaak. That was his comedy about sex addiction. In the 1990s alone, Waters also gave us Pecker, which featured Edward Furlong taking pictures of perverts, and Serial Mom, the 1994 black comedy featuring the mighty Kathleen Turner as a mother who doubles as a serial killer.

Waters’ style is certainly unique and the idea of a new film from him after all this time is a welcome one. What’s more, he’s found a leading actor to...

Jack Black on the success of Bowser’s “Peaches” song, and the unstoppable Taylor Swift
Image
Forget about The Presidents of the United States of America. Jack Black’s Bowser from The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the artist behind everyone’s favorite song about peaches now! Discussing the evolution of his impassioned piano rock ballad “Peaches” with The Hollywood Reporter, Black says the song was initially a 20-second diddy before he sank his claws into it.

“They had this idea late in the game, ‘What if Bowser sings a song,” Black told THR. “They were like, ‘We got this little nugget.’ And they sent over this little 20-second song.” Black, flabbergasted about having the song dropped on him, immediately took action. He called his producing partner, John Spiker, and started making magic.

“We fleshed it out and made it more of a song with more lyrics and melody and stuff. And I was like, ‘Ooh, this hits, this slaps. I bet you they won’t...

Jack Black Performs Super Mario Bros. Ballad “Peaches” with Orchestra: Watch
Image
Jack Black brought his piano ballad “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Sunday. During the surprise performance at The Game Awards 10–Year Concert, one-half of Tenacious D was accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by Lorne Balfe. Watch it below.

After entering from stage right, Black — whose character Bowser dedicates the song to Princess Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy) in the record-breaking movie — let loose an especially schmaltzy, over-the-top rendition of his first solo hit while rocking the same green suit and red hairpiece from the music video. Meanwhile, footage of Peach from the film played on the giant screen hanging over the stage.

Following its release in April, “Peaches” peaked at No. 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent a total of five weeks on the chart. Its music video, directed by Lyrical Lemonade’s Cole Bennett, has racked up 45 million YouTube views to date.

Tenacious D Unleash Cover of ‘Wicked Game’ in Glorious Video
Image
Tenacious D fans have spoken, and the rock duo has delivered. After the band’s viral rendition of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” during a SiriusXM live session back in December — the cover quickly became a fan favorite at shows.

On Thursday, Black and Gass unleashed their official recording to the masses along with a music video featuring the pair nearly baring it all in a cheeky homage to Isaak’s visual. The studio track packs Black’s buttery vocals in their full glory, and while he doesn’t attempt the original’s full falsetto,...

Tenacious D Release Cover of “Wicked Game” with Hilarious Beach Romp Video: Watch
Image

Offering up a play on the original Chris Isaak music video, which depicted the crooner getting hot and heavy with supermodel Helena Christensen on a tropical beach, Black and Gass frolic in the ocean wearing a one-piece bathing suit and tighty-whities, respectively. It’s truly a sight to behold!

The Voice Winner Gina Miles Weighs In on Conspiracy Theories, Standing Out and Speaking Up: 'I'm Trying My Best'
Image
Over the course of Season 23 of The Voice, a big deal was made of the fact that Team Niall Horan’s Gina Miles was, as Jerry Seinfeld would have called her, a low talker. But Zooming with TVLine about her victory, the effervescent 19-year-old could be heard loudly and clearly — a good thing, too, because she had a lot to say about everything from the debunked theory that retiring coach Blake Shelton had to win to which performance she thought was her standout.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Wtf Happened to Eyes Wide Shut?
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Eyes Wide Shut is Stanley Kubrick‘s haunting final masterpiece. The famous director passed away just a few months before the film opened, and indeed in the years since, it’s been one of his most divisive efforts. Kubrick’s first film since 1987’s Full Metal Jacket, it opened with a flurry of controversy, as the studio had to insert CGI figures into an orgy sequence to avoid getting the film an Nc-17 rating. The first teaser, which featured its married stars, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, cavorting nude to Chris Isaak’s “Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing” was the public’s clue to the fact that Kubrick’s meditation on sexual relationships would be controversial. The film received a mixed reaction when it first came out, with some critics saying it was a masterpiece while others dismissed it. It’s still one of Kubrick’s most divisive films.

Every Song In Elvis (& Who Sings What)
Image
In a biopic about Elvis Presley, having a high volume of memorable songs is a must, and Elvis does not disappoint. A predictable route for an Elvis biopic would be to just include Elvis’s most iconic songs, but like Elvis itself, Baz Luhrmann takes an unconventional approach to the Elvis 2022 movie soundtrack. Rather than a typical “greatest hits” soundtrack, Luhrmann opts for a soundtrack of modern covers and original songs sampling Elvis’s classics by contemporary artists, which is an approach similar to Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.

The Elvis 2022 movie soundtrack includes a plethora of different kinds of songs to fill out its soundtrack. Covers like Måneskin’s “If I Can Dream”, original songs that sample iconic songs like Doja Cat’s “Vegas”, and reworkings of Elvis’s classics like “Craw-Fever” are just some of the offerings that underscore the film’s important moments. It also includes straightforward renditions of Elvis’s tunes,...

Dianña New Country Song: “A Street Called Evergreen”
Image
Los Angeles, Jan. 16, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Even though Dianña’s last two releases were crossover Adult Contemporary hits, her new release “A Street Called Evergreen” is squarely in her wheelhouse as a storytelling Country music singer-songwriter. Released today to radio, Spotify, Apple Music, and all major music platforms reported her label Billeegee Productions.

I hope this song inspires budding singer-songwriters to follow their dreams.

Dianña spoke about her song, “I wrote the first draft over ten years ago about my childhood living in a particular house. That draft had a negative tone as I was trying to exorcise often bad and even traumatic memories through my songwriting. But I was never able to finish it. Then a year ago I decided to visit the house and it had been torn down, which took away many of the bad memories for me. So I rewrote the song focusing on the positive memories.”

Dianña...

Alicia Keys, Santa Baby (Alicia Keys Records)

Alicia Keys’ Christmas album debut Santa Baby is as cheeky, cozy and captivating, as the classic it is named after.

For a holiday fanatic like me, there is nothing more heartwarming than Christmas songs. However, Keys is able to take a holiday favorite and improve it with her vocals and R&b twist.

So, like a square of butter over a freshly baked tower of pancakes,...

Julia Roberts was an early Friends guest star, appearing in the season 2 two-parter, "The One After the Superbowl." John Prine Finally Gets the Send-Off He Deserved at Nashville’s Week of Tribute Concerts
Image
To live in Nashville is to love John Prine, so it never sat right how quarantine robbed the late singer, songwriter, and hometown hero of a proper in-person memorial when he died of Covid complications in April of 2020. Prine finally got the wake he deserved this week in Nashville with a string of celebratory concerts titled “You Got Gold,” which featured an all-star, cross-generational casts of admirers covering songs and exchanging anecdotes about the man.

On Sunday, performers and presenters remembered Prine’s generous spirit and the way he modeled...

The Voice Recap: Who's Going Home First as Season 22's Battles Begin?

With apologies to Nike, “Just duet” became The Voice’s unofficial motto Monday night as the episode finished up Season 22’s Blind Auditions and began the Battles. Or, as I think of them, the round in which we are forced to reconsider why some of our early favorites were our favorites in the first place and say goodbye to others owing to befuddling decisions on the part of coaches John Legend, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Camila Cabello. Are you ready? Me, neither. But let’s dive in, anyway. The only way out is through!

John Waters Career In Film Gallery: From ‘Pink Flamingos’, ‘Cry-Baby’, ‘Serial Mom’, ‘Hairspray’ & More
Image
Cult director John Waters has produced some of the most shocking and outrageous scenes in film history that have delighted fans for over 60 years of pure filth.

He began his career with low-budget indie films and then later proceeded to push the boundaries of taste when he released Pink Flamingos in 1972 to outraged critics starring his iconic muse, drag queen Divine, who played the “filthiest person alive.” Divine continued to collaborate with Waters and featured in several of his movies, including Multiple Maniacs, Female Trouble, Polyester (alongside Tab Hunter), and Hairspray.

Not one to shy away from the controversy, he leaned into his nickname ‘‘The Pope of Trash’ to create more campy 90’s classics like Cry-Baby starring Johnny Depp, Pecker; Cecil B. Demented; Serial Mom starring Kathleen Turner. Waters directed his last film, A Dirty Shame, in 2004, featuring Tracey Ullman, Johnny Knoxville, and Chris Isaak. He shifted his focus in...

Dangerous Liaisons Trailer: Love Is a Battlefield in Starz's Steamy Prequel
Image
The cruel love games between Dangerous Liaisons‘ Valmont and Merteuil started way earlier than we thought, if a trailer for Starz’s new version is any indication.

A prequel to the classic French novel that inspired the 1988 film starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich — and also inspired the 1999 teen adaptation Cruel Intentions — this Liaisons goes back to show us how Valmont and Merteuil met as young lovers in Paris. In the trailer, Merteuil (Ratched‘s Alice Englert) is eager to run away with Valmont (Nicholas Denton), who suggests they get married — but he’s also still carnally involved with the much older Marquise de Merteuil,...

Married to the Mob
Image
Many gangland parodies fall flat, but not Jonathan Demme’s marvelous combo of high spirits and murder. Mafia spouse Angela de Marco’s story is goofy comedy with an edge of economic reality: how does one newly-impoverished New Yawk dame make a living for her orphaned son, while avoiding the adulterous attentions of the Big Boss who had her husband iced? Michelle Pfeiffer came into her own, Dean Stockwell has his best adult role and Matthew Modine is uniquely charming as an amorous FBI agent. The tonal balance is abetted by a supporting performances that go every which way: Mercedes Ruehl, Alec Baldwin, Oliver Platt and a slew of Demme regulars. Plus a music score by David Byrne. The disc features three new video interviews.

AmericanaFest in Nashville, review – diversity and phenomenal new talent lead country music’s big week
Image
The most common question at the annual AmericanaFest – a SXSW-style multi-venue music festival held in Nashville since 2000 – is “what is Americana?” “Diverse” seems to be the answer, after decades of favouritism shown towards white, male country singers.

At the event’s opening awards ceremony, which takes place at The Ryman, aka country music’s “mother church”, the sensational Canadian songwriter Allison Russell picks up a well-deserved Album of the Year for her illuminating solo debut Outside Child. Other gongs go to bluesy husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty, flamboyant gypsy jazz renegade Sierra Ferrell, and the Grammys-conquering LGBT+ icon Brandi Carlile. There’s still room for the old guard, too. Robert Plant, Chris Isaak and Lyle Lovett all make appearances, as does the great Lucinda Williams, while tribute is paid to late honky tonk singer-songwriter Luke Bell, who died last month aged 32.

Aside from the established names, AmericanaFest is also a hotbed of young talent.
