In the early ‘90s, no comedy star was on a bigger heater than Jim Carrey, delivering Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask in the span of a single calendar year. The most unlikely hit might have been The Mask, in which Carrey’s bumbling Stanley Ipkiss uses his newfound superpowers to rescue a nightclub singer, played by Cameron Diaz, from the clutches of sleazy gangsters.

Carrey was nominated for five MTV Movie Awards in 1995, sometimes competing against himself in the same category.

Attention, MTV Generation, your ship has come in! Paramount+ is opening the floodgates to bring classic episodes of MTV Unplugged, VH1 Storytellers, and CMT Crossroads to the streaming platform. Over 50 episodes of MTV Unplugged were recently added, and there are dozens of episodes of VH1 Storytellers and CMT Crossroads to experience and explore.

Paramount+ is ready to rock — and they've released over 125 episodes of musical performances to its streaming service to prove it. Coming at you from the other Viacom-owned properties like MTV Unplugged, VH1 Storytellers, and CMT Crossroads, many of the episodes haven't been seen since they first aired. And with a list of performances that includes the likes of Elton John, Neil Young, Mariah Carey, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, and even Nirvana's now-iconic November 1993 performance — which aired a mere seven months before the singer Kurt Cobain died — the list is a treasure trove for any music fan.

According to a press release from the streamer, more than 70 of the episodes have not been available to the public for more than 20 years. And, considering how much purging of content Paramount Global has done over the years, it's a relief to see that some things still get saved in the digital age.

Paramount+ has opened up its vault of classic MTV Unplugged episodes. Over 50 episodes of the live performance series have been added to the streamer, alongside dozens more episodes of VH1 Storytellers and CMT Crossroads.

According to a press release, many of the episodes “haven’t been available in 20+ years.” Coming from Seasons 1-8 and 10-13, the MTV Unplugged episodes include iconic performances from Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Paul McCartney, Oasis, R.E.M., Alanis Morissette, Alice in Chains, and Bob Dylan.

Meanwhile, the VH1 Storytellers episodes are taken from Seasons 1-9, 11-13,15, and 16, featuring standouts like David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Alicia Keys, and Elton John.

On 15 January, the cinematic world shifted off its axis. At the age of 78, David Lynch passed away – a true pioneer, a complete one-off, whose big-screen (and small-screen) masterpieces never failed to transport us somewhere else; often directly into Lynch’s own singular brain. His work was surreal, uncompromising, challenging, engrossing, and always, always visionary, translating dreamlike ideas into pure celluloid. When news of his passing arrived, Team Empire wanted to do something special to celebrate his life and legacy – not only delivering the ultimate tribute to Lynch inside the new issue of Empire magazine, but putting him on the subscriber cover of our April 2025 issue.

The cover, illustrated exclusively for Empire by Edward Tuckwell, pictures Lynch in Twin Peaks’ iconic Red Room, walking on that black-and-white zigzag floor towards those mysterious crimson curtains. That Lynch has left us is hard to comprehend; that he leaves behind such an astonishing body of work is a joy.

Chris Isaak shared an emotional tribute to David Lynch on Friday, a day after the legendary director died at age 78.

Exclusive: The star of David Lynch’s Palme d’Or winning 1990 road trip bender, Wild at Heart, Nicolas Cage tells us that the late filmmaker who died today, “was a singular genius in cinema, one of the greatest artists of this or any time.”

“He was brave, brilliant, and a maverick with a joyful sense of humor,” Cage continues, “I never had more fun on a film set than working with David Lynch. He will always be solid gold.”

Liarmouth was set to star Aubrey Plaza, and be the first John Waters film for 20 years. It’s now not set to be.

John Waters hasn’t made a film in 20 years, so it was exciting to hear back in 2022 that he was set to bring his demented brand of comedy back to the silver screen, along with Aubrey Plaza, a gifted comic actor with whom the filmmaker would surely have created something special.

Sadly, that’s not to be as Waters has revealed (courtesy of World Of Reel) that the project is no longer happening. Funding seems to be the source of the issue, with Waters telling Indie Wire that:

“I wrote the script, they liked it, Aubrey [Plaza] likes the script, wants to be in it, I want her to be in it, and every person said, “No, we don’t have a penny of the budget.” That is where it is today.

Few TV series have enjoyed the acclaim of Twin Peaks, and even fewer have experienced such a speedy demise. Discussing the evolution of his impassioned piano rock ballad “Peaches” with The Hollywood Reporter, Black says the song was initially a 20-second diddy before he sank his claws into it.

Jack Black brought his piano ballad “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Sunday. During the surprise performance at The Game Awards 10–Year Concert, one-half of Tenacious D was accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by Lorne Balfe. Watch it below.

Eyes Wide Shut is Stanley Kubrick‘s haunting final masterpiece. The famous director passed away just a few months before the film opened, and indeed in the years since, it’s been one of his most divisive efforts. Kubrick’s first film since 1987’s Full Metal Jacket, it opened with a flurry of controversy, as the studio had to insert CGI figures into an orgy sequence to avoid getting the film an Nc-17 rating. The first teaser, which featured its married stars, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, cavorting nude to Chris Isaak’s “Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing” was the public’s clue to the fact that Kubrick’s meditation on sexual relationships would be controversial. The film received a mixed reaction when it first came out, with some critics saying it was a masterpiece while others dismissed it. It’s still one of Kubrick’s most divisive films.

In a biopic about Elvis Presley, having a high volume of memorable songs is a must, and Elvis does not disappoint. A predictable route for an Elvis biopic would be to just include Elvis’s most iconic songs, but like Elvis itself, Baz Luhrmann takes an unconventional approach to the Elvis 2022 movie soundtrack. The most common question at the annual AmericanaFest – a SXSW-style multi-venue music festival held in Nashville since 2000 – is “what is Americana?” “Diverse” seems to be the answer, after decades of favouritism shown towards white, male country singers.

At the event’s opening awards ceremony, which takes place at The Ryman, aka country music’s “mother church”, the sensational Canadian songwriter Allison Russell picks up a well-deserved Album of the Year for her illuminating solo debut Outside Child. Other gongs go to bluesy husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty, flamboyant gypsy jazz renegade Sierra Ferrell, and the Grammys-conquering LGBT+ icon Brandi Carlile. There’s still room for the old guard, too. Robert Plant, Chris Isaak and Lyle Lovett all make appearances, as does the great Lucinda Williams, while tribute is paid to late honky tonk singer-songwriter Luke Bell, who died last month aged 32.

Aside from the established names, AmericanaFest is also a hotbed of young talent.
