‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Star Manuel Garcia-Rulfo on His Character’s ‘Sexy’ Shorts, Working with ‘Hot Motherf—er’ Jonathan Bailey and ‘Lincoln Lawyer’ Season 4
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains details about “Jurassic World Rebirth,” now playing in theaters.

While growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo says he always believed he’d end up in Hollywood one day.

“I never liked school. I was terrible at school, very, very bad,” the actor tells me on the latest episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “They always kicked me out of everything. I never paid attention to it. All I cared about was movies. There was something since I was a kid that I knew I was going to be in this world.”

“But then there was that part like, ‘Ah, that’s impossible. That’s in Hollywood,” he continues. “But there was something inside that really called me for that. I really give that to Steven Spielberg, to his movies — not just ‘Jurassic,’ but seeing ‘Hook’ for the first time. He really opened the doors of movies for me.

Sweden’s Loreen Takes Top Prize In Eurovision 2023 For Second Time
Image
Swedish singer Loreen was named the winner of Eurovision 2023 for her pop anthem “Tattoo,” triumphing over 25 other nations in the finals on Saturday night.

This is her second time winning the contest, first earning the top prize for Sweden in 2012. She joins Ireland’s Johnny Logan, who won in 1980 and 1987, as a two-time winner. Sweden also has the joint amount of wins in the contest with Ireland at seven victories each.

In honor of Ukraine, Eurovision’s theme for this year was “united by music.” The event took place in Liverpool, England. Typically, the competition’s host country is the winner from the previous year, but since last year’s winner, Ukraine, is at war, the 2022 runner-up Britain hosted this year’s contest.

Loreen performed her song between two moving platforms, dancing around the stage while singing the chorus, “You’re stuck on me like a tattoo-hoo-hoo.

‘Willie Nelson & Family’ Review: A Heart-and-Soul Portrait of an American Original
Image
These days everything and everyone is “iconic.” But here, at the center of five rich and unrushed episodes, is the real deal. As he approaches his 90th birthday, the composer of such immortal numbers as “Crazy,” “Night Life” and “On the Road Again” is still writing songs, still playing to concert crowds. Delving into the incomparable songbook, directors Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman show how Willie Nelson broke the country mold and transcended genre boxes, again and again. Their authorized biography — the musician’s wife and his manager are executive producers — is a love letter, to be sure, and like Nelson himself it doesn’t dwell on negativity, but there’s nothing simplistic or naive about it. Willie Nelson & Family is a portrait of a man who has made music and lived life on his own terms, in good times and bad.

The series is a reminder to the casual...

Iconic Mexican Singer Thalía Drops New Single "Psycho B*tch"
Image
We've all been there: you're in a romantic relationship that isn't exactly the healthiest, and it eventually triggers your inner loca, or what men love to refer to as "psycho b*tch." Maybe they were unfaithful or treated you poorly, eventually breaking both your heart and your trust in them. You might have tolerated it for weeks, months, or even years until it drove you temporarily to lose your sh*t. This is exactly what Mexican singer and icon Thalía tapped into when she wrote her latest single, "Psycho B*tch," which dropped on Friday, Nov. 4, 2022. Thalía managed to take an ugly reality and an exhausting stereotype - cause Latinas stay getting a bad rep for being spitfire locas - and turned it into something both humorous and empowering. It's relatable, to say the least.

"It's just that fun aspect of like don't push my buttons. You're going to find me.

Enjoy the Silence: The New York Film Festival's Currents
Image
The Adventures of Gigi the Law.Every New York film critic and cinephile I know looks forward to the New York Film Festival as perhaps the major event of the year. At the same time, these critics’ most common complaint is that the Main Slate shows the work of the same established star auteurs over and over again. If Claire Denis, Frederick Wiseman, or Tsai Ming-liang—just to name a few—makes a movie, you can bet that their film will be in the lineup. The running joke these days is that if Hong Sang-soo made seven films in a year instead of his usual two, we’d probably get the chance to see all seven. Luckily for those of us curious about new faces, though, the festival has expanded over the last few years with the addition of the Spotlight and Currents sidebars. The festival tends to treat Currents especially like a second tier,...

Paramount+ Preps ‘Bosé’ for November Premiere, Drops Trailer, Key Art (Exclusive)
Image
Cannes — Paramount+ has revealed a premiere date – Nov. 3 – as well as trailer and key art for “Bosé,” a biopic of the famed Spanish singer-songwriter Miguel Bosé which is shaping up as one of Spain’s biggest and most anticipated series of 2022.

Shared in exclusivity with Variety, the trailer, like the version glimpsed at Iberseries in one of that market’s biggest sneak peeks, captures Bosé’s art – a mix between David Bowie glam and sexual ambiguity and softer Italian melody.

It also drive into what looks like the emotional heart and narrative structure of the story, showing Miguel Bosé (played by Iván Sánchez and José Pastor), in a present-day timeline during the promotion of his multi-platinum album “Papito,” as he debates becoming a father.

Here he must reconcile himself with memories of his own padre, famed philandering bullfighter Luis Miguel Dominguín, whom Bosé loved but who despised his son for not being a real hombre.

How Early-2000s Reggaeton Served as My Entry Point to Latin Music
Image
I still remember where I was the first time reggaeton made me look up a song. It was 2007; I was 19, sitting in my then-boyfriend's living room. He was flipping channels as I messed around on my Sidekick when MTV3 came up on the screen. He paused long enough for me to make out the song. It was Eddy Lover in dark sunglasses belting out "Perdoname" as Demphra and Joysi Love of La Factoria swiveled around in their black and red corsets with the wind in their faces. I was captivated: not just by Eddy's falsetto or Joysi and Demphra's deep commanding voices, but by the fact that this music hit so much harder than everything I'd heard up to that point.

Latin Grammy Nominations Led by Camilo, Juan Luis Guerra, C. Tangana and Bad Bunny

Colombian singer-songwriter Camilo dominated the announcement of the 2021 Latin Grammy Awards nominations, garnering 10, including nods in all three top categories — album of the year (for “Mis Manos”), record of the year (for “Vida de Rico” and “Amen”) and song of the year (for “Vida de Rico” and “Dios Así Lo Quiso”).

Also faring well with multiple nods were Dominican artist Juan Luis Guerra with six, Spanish rapper C. Tangana with five and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny with four.

Most of these top-nominated artists have enjoyed multiple trips to the podium in previous years— especially Guerra, a 20-time Latin Grammy winner. C. Tangana and Bad Bunny have won twice before. Why HBO Max’s ‘Veneno’ Insisted on Casting Trans Performers to Play 1990s Trans Icon Cristina Ortiz
Image
Directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo were meeting with television executives in their native Spain when they were asked to name someone they’d love to make a biographical series about.

“They probably expected us to say someone like Julio Iglesias, but one of us said, ‘La Veneno,’” Calvo tells Variety during a Zoom interview from the couple’s home in Madrid. “It was like a revelation. One man was looking down at his papers and looked up and was like, ‘What did you say? Who?’ And I was just like, ‘She was a transgender woman. She was famous, but she was a prostitute. And then she went to jail.’ We started to develop this TV show in our heads.”

Cristina “La Veneno” Ortiz was a pop culture superstar in Spain in the 1990s. She was discovered working the streets and became a sensation after her appearance on the late-night...

“I Was Shocked I Survived”: Syrian Director Waad Al-Kateab On Filming Her Oscar Shortlisted Documentary ‘For Sama’
When the Academy announced its shortlist of 15 feature documentaries still in contention for the Oscars, one title on it was no surprise: For Sama, directed by Waad Al-Kateab and Edward Watts. It is the single-most honored nonfiction film of the year, winning dozens of prizes at film festivals across the globe from Cannes to SXSW, Sheffield and HotDocs. Earlier this month For Sama won Best Documentary at the Ida Awards in Hollywood.

The Syrian-born Al-Kateab made For Sama to document the destruction of her city of Aleppo, decimated by Syrian government forces and their Russian allies. The film takes the form of a love letter to her baby daughter Sama, born in the midst of the brutal siege. The ongoing recognition for the film has left her stunned, Al-Kateab says, because “experts” had assured her the documentary would be met with indifference.

“We were told that the film will not...

No Flamenco at the 2019 Latin Grammys, Says Academy President
Bad news for flamenco fans: as of 2019, the Latin Grammy category for Best Flamenco Album has been discontinued.

According to Latin Recording Academy President and CEO Gabriel Abaroa, it wasn’t the ongoing discourse surrounding Spanish artists that sparked the Academy’s decision. “The Latin Recording Academy follows a strict Awards process,” he told Billboard on Thursday. “One of the rules that applies is that at least 25 approved recordings must be submitted each year.” According to the report, Universal Music Spain had submitted 10 qualifying new recordings; it was not confirmed...

Rosalia, Alejandro Sanz Lead Latin Grammy Awards Nominations in Landmark Year
The Latin Recording Academy has announced the nominees for the 20th annual Latin Grammy Awards with Flamenco pop star Rosalia (pictured) claiming the title of most recognized female artist with five nominations. But she has competition in Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz, who takes the lead for most nominations with eight — three of which are shared with Camila Cabello.

“Mi Persona Favorita,” a collaborative project between Sanz and Cabello, the latter of Cuban heritage, earned the duo recognitions in the categories for best pop song, song of the year and record of the year. Rosalia’s song “Aute Couture” also earned her a nomination for song of the year.

Sanz’s song “No Tengo Nada” also landed him two nominations in the categories for record of the year and song of the year. Rosalia and J Balvin’s collaboration on the smash hit “Con Altura” earned her and the Colombian artist...

Alejandra Márquez Abella
Shanghai Film Review: ‘The Good Girls’
Alejandra Márquez Abella
The economy’s a mess but Sofía’s hair is perfect in Alejandra Márquez Abella’s “The Good Girls,” a film that is all surface in a way that is not, for once, a negative. The primped, powdered and shoulder-padded story of the fall from grace of a 1980s Mexican socialite is all about buffed and lustrous surfaces — poreless skin, laquered nails, silken fabrics — all the veneer of social superiority that money can buy. It’s an illusion, of course, that such a thin plating of wealth offers any protection against the changeable climate outside. But it’s such a seductive lie that the vacuous, complacent people thus ensheathed are prone to believe it, forgetting that their glaze of perfection is as brittle as the burnt-sugar topping on a crème brûlée. It’s delicious when it cracks.

We’re introduced to Sofía (Ilse Salas) in fragments: her hair being lathered...

Willie Nelson Proves Less Is More at All-Star Nashville Tribute
Ed Helms at an event for Cedar Rapids (2011)
TV tapings can be a drag. But amid the set changes and staged introductions from host Ed Helms at Saturday night’s all-star tribute to Willie Nelson in Nashville, there were some true moments of musical spontaneity — particularly from the guest of honor.

Titled Willie: Life & Songs of an American Outlaw and produced by Blackbird Presents, the concert, which will air sometime this year on A&E, assembled a powerful cast of guest artists to pay tribute to the 85-year-old. George Strait, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Jimmy Buffett, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson...

Tiff Review: ‘The Good Girls’ Looks at Mexico’s Economic Crisis from the Upper Class
Sofía Hernandez (Ilse Salas) has everything: three children she can ignore, servants and maids to take care of her every whim, and a husband (Flavio Medina’s Fernando) who inherited his wealth from his father and still has yet to really work for it thanks to Uncle Javier (Diego Jáuregui) managing things like he always had. Theirs is a charmed life of opulence and excess wherein they can afford to treat aristocratic etiquette and tradition as sacrosanct while “new money” commoners try to enter their social circle as though they are animals just arrived from the wild. Sofía and Fer are practically European by contrast, propping up their Mexican backyard with class and grace. All that could make life better is Julio Iglesias serenading some “Happy Birthday” magic.

Unfortunately for them, writer/director Alejandra Márquez Abella ensures their false sense of financial security crosses paths with Mexico’s 1982 economic crisis.

Watch: Singers Luis Fonsi and J. Balvin Interview One Another in Hilarious Video
Luis Fonsi
Two of Latin music’s hottest singers, “Despacito” singer Luis Fonsi and “Mi Gente” singer J Balvin, sat down for Vevo’s “Artist on Artist” special to interview one another and it’s hilarious. The two stars teased each other through the entire exchange, while reminiscing about the first time they met, their growing friendship, hit songs and other fun topics.

At the start of the video, the duo jokes: “Nice to meet you. What’s your name?” Fonsi asks. “Maluma,” Balvin replies. “I’m Ricky Martin,” Fonsi laughs, “Let’s do a song together.”

Enrique Iglesias
This Fact About Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova's Romance Will Blow Your Mind
Enrique Iglesias
Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova have been together since 2001 (they were rumored to have briefly split in October 2013). The two met after the former tennis pro appeared in his steamy "Escape" music video, and they've made a handful of sweet appearances together ever since. But despite being together for so long, one thing you might be surprised to know is that as of 2014 (13 years into their romance), Enrique's father, Julio Iglesias, had never met her. "You know I have to tell the truth, I have never met Anna," Julio told The Mirror in 2014. "Yes, my wife and my kids and his brothers have, but I have never met her, no, no, never." The 74-year-old went on to explain why the two have never been in the same spot. "I don't know how come. My kids are very independent and it is difficult to see Enrique because he is all over the world.

Paulina Rubio Admits She Felt "Like a Narcissist" Before Motherhood
Paulina Rubio
Paulina Rubio is living a musical and personal awakening, writes Nexos Magazine. The place that she calls home is Miami Beach, and she explains that she decided to move there in 1992 for a variety of reasons and has stayed there ever since.  "I really, really wanted to live here. I came with visions of the American Dream of Julio Iglesias and Gloria and Emilio Estefan. My mother has always been based in Los Angeles, and I was so excited about discovering Miami, its beaches, its climate, its beautiful mix of people. I saw it as the next major Latin capital. It was also a little about rebelling. I wanted my independence, and at that time I still had to ask for my mom's permission." The...

''Miyan, captain banoge?''
''Miyan, captain banoge?''

Mohammad Azharuddin has been a successful Indian cricketer and captain. His wristy stroke-play is legendary, so is his second marriage and separation from actress Sangeeta Bijlani. He loved watches and designer clothes (he still does) and everything glitzy. He was modest when he stormed onto the cricketing scene with three back-to-back Test tons, got the captaincy when the Indian team of the nineties were in their transition phase (they still are, and will continue to be), and when the late Raj Singh Dungarpur, the then Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) Chief tossed the question to him, ''Miyan, captain banoge?''

He took over the reins of a team loaded with four former captains, brought stability in the team's outings overseas and was cruelly run out at 99 Tests, not to forget 334 One-dayers. His biggest loss though was the death of his 19-year-old son Ayazuddin...
