Home Alone 2 Director: Remove Donald Trump From My Movie Because “It’s become this curse”
Image
Home Alone 2 may still be a holiday favorite, but one particular cameo continues to spark more debate than cheer. Donald Trump’s brief appearance in the Plaza Hotel has officially worn out its welcome, at least according to director Chris Columbus. Calling it a “curse,” Columbus now wishes the scene had never made the final cut.

The controversy has only grown with time, turning what was once a quirky pop culture moment into a glaring distraction from the film’s charm. And now, the director seems ready to let the holiday classic shed some unnecessary baggage.

Image
Quick LinksWhat Is 'So I Married an Axe Murderer' About? What Makes 'So I Married an Axe Murderer' So Good? What Fans and Critics Say About 'So I Married an Axe Murderer'

When thinking about Mike Myers, top of mind are shows and movies like Saturday Night Live, Wayne’s World, Shrek, and Austin Powers, depending on what generation. However, the Canadian comedic actor has appeared in many movies over the last several decades, including some hidden gems.

One such hidden gem is So I Married an Axe Murderer, a romantic black comedy from 1993 that is arguably one of his best movies ever. The criminally underrated film is one that fans of the actor, or silly comedy movies in general, should have on their radar. And with So I Married an Axe Murderer streaming for free on Tubi this month, now is the perfect time to enjoy it.

'A Time to Kill' is a Streaming Hit on Tubi
Image
A Time to Kill, Matthew McConaughey's extremely tense legal thriller from 1996, has become a free streaming hit after spending a few days in Tubi's top 10 most-watched films. The film stands in second place on the streaming service at the time of this writing. Tubi is a free streaming service where audiences can enjoy more than 250,000 titles on the platform. The only catch is that the service contains ads that cannot be skipped.

If movies were your thing during the 1990s, then there's a high chance you remember seeing the trailer for A Time to Kill. Samuel L. Jackson's thick accent introduces viewers to one of the decade's best legal thrillers, based on John Grisham's 1989 bestseller. The novel, as well as its feature film adaptation, follows a young lawyer who represents a black man charged with killing the two white men who raped his daughter in a small,...

Chris Columbus Says No One Begged Donald Trump to be in 'Home Alone 2'
Image
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is not as good as its predecessor, but it does have one thing that the 1990 comedy hit does not have; Donald Trump. In recent years, there has been a dispute over exactly how the former and future president wangled himself into a cameo appearance in the movie. Now director Chris Columbus has countered claims Trump made that the director “begged” for him to appear in the film.

While it may be shockingly uncommon for someone to deny a statement by the returning Potus – actually, scratch that bit – Columbus has explained that despite what Trump claimed, his appearance in the movie was certainly not something the director asked for, and would have been cut entirely if not for the reaction of preview audiences. In a recent Vanity Fair interview, Columbus doubled down on the reason Trump actually appeared in the Macaulay Culkin holiday sequel.

'Home Alone 2's Pigeon Lady Brenda Fricker is Broke and Suffered Depression for Decades
Image
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is still a fan-favorite Christmas movie, which has been proven as it joined its predecessor at the top of the Disney+ movie chart this festive season. However, there is one star of the movie who has revealed that starring in the much-loved film did not bring her as much joy as it has brought others.

Brenda Fricker is probably best known for playing the Pigeon Lady in Macaulay Culkin’s second outing as Kevin McCallister, in which he ends up taking the wrong flight and finds himself being pursued once again by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern’s Harry and Marv while being “lost in New York.” In a similar beat to the 1990 original, Kevin ends up being befriended by the at-first scary homeless Pigeon Lady and all is well in the end.

In real life though, Fricker revealed that she has...

The Oscars Win That Made Spike Lee Storm Off In Disgust
Image
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a lousy track record when it comes to getting its awards to the most deserving nominees. There are myriad examples of injustices, and, when it comes to Best Picture, a history of settling on a movie that most people at least really like, even if few outright love it. In recent years, we've had the perfectly fine "Spotlight," "Argo," Nomadland," and "Coda" take home the top prize. They weren't the best movies of their respective years, not even close, but they were proficiently directed movies buoyed by excellent performances and accomplished (if somewhat formulaic) screenplays.

The Academy has had a decent five year Best Picture run, but in 2018 there was a galling regression to the bad ol' days when white Hollywood phonies made bogus can't-we-all-just-can't-get-along bromides congratulating themselves for viewing people of different colors and ethnicities as actual human beings. That...

Oscars welcome the world: Last decade of acting champs hail from 8 different countries
Image
By taking home the 2024 Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy blazed a trail as the first Irish-born lead performer ever honored by the film academy. Prior to his victory, there had not been a native Irish acting winner in over 30 years nor any from his city of Cork, as the only earlier examples had involved supporting winners and fellow Dubliners Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker. His historic achievement brings the total number of different countries that have produced acting champs during the last decade to eight.

As has been the case throughout practically all of Oscars history, the United States is by far the dominant birthplace among the 2015-2024 acting winners. Of the group’s 37 unique members, 26 (or 70.3%) originate from there, including newly-crowned victors Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Stone is one of three American actors to bag two trophies within the last 10 years,...

2024 Oscars Best Actor nominees: 1 past contender versus 4 rookies
Image
The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). Murphy (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Giamatti (18/5), Cooper (9/2), Wright (9/2), and Domingo (9/2).

Whereas last year’s lead male lineup was the first in almost nine decades to consist entirely of Oscars newcomers, this one includes three rookies and two general veterans. Standing alone in having already competed for this specific award is Cooper, who was previously recognized for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013), “American Sniper” (2015), and “A Star Is Born” (2019). Since he personally helmed both “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” he is now the fourth person to direct himself to multiple acting nominations, following Laurence Olivier, Warren Beatty, and Clint Eastwood.

Cooper is concurrently nominated for co-writing the original screenplay for “Maestro” with past winner Josh Singer and is directly involved...

Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson talks about the price of fame
Kate Hudson
Los Angeles, Feb 15 (Ians) Actress Kate Hudson has revealed that her appearance in ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’, which released in 1992, still pays her residuals, even if she’s only earning a dime.

Kate was speaking on her podcast Sibling Revelry, hosted with her brother, Oliver Hudson, reports deadline.com.

During a conversation on her podcast, Kate discussed her credits with Joey Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence, and Andy Lawrence.

“I still get residuals from ‘Home Alone 2’ because I sang in the chorus,” Kate said, referencing the scene where Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McAllister ruins a school Christmas pageant.

“I’m in that chorus, and then I get 10 cents every once in a while.”

Joey Lawrence knows the feeling.

“Sometimes I’ll get, like, 2 cents and I’m like, ‘Wait. Doesn’t the envelope and paper cost more?’”

The Christmas comedy film is directed by Chris Columbus.

The sequel...

Donald Trump Denies "Bullying" His Way into Home Alone 2: "That Cameo Helped Make the Movie a Success."

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York features a memorable cameo by Donald Trump, who reportedly gained an appearance through his quid pro quo style of working. The sequel largely sticks to the successful formula of the original Home Alone, with a similar plot and clever, deadly booby traps set up by the main character. While subsequent sequels failed to capture the magic of the first two films, Home Alone and Home Alone 2 still bring the holiday magic and can be easily found on Disney+.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York may not be quite as loved as its predecessor, but the Macaulay Culkin film does have several memorable moments that make it another much-loved Christmas classic. ‘Marlowe’ Movie Revew: How can I not compare it to the all-time classic?
Image
Marlowe is a movie directed by Neil Jordan starirng Liam Neeson. With Diane Kruger and Jessica Lange. It is based on a novel by John Banville.

Marlowe is one of those films that probably shouldn’t have been made, and let me explain why: the main character has all the connotations of a classic that has reached a “sacrosanct” status and is probably the one of the most untouchable characters in the history of cinema, then played by the greatest star in the zenith of the golden age the seventh art – Humphrey Bogart.

About the Movie

Whether it was well-made, brilliant, or even if Orson Welles had directed it, I would have reason to be a bit reticent with this film. And, indeed I am, for the obvious reason that it dares revisit an untouchable classic.

Liam Neeson provides us with a similar role – if not identical – to Bogart’s,...

2023 Oscars Best Actor nominees: 1st all-rookie lineup in 88 years
Image
The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), and Bill Nighy (“Living”). Butler (69/20) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Fraser (71/20), Farrell (4/1), Nighy (9/2), and Mescal (9/2).

Last year’s lead male lineup was the first since 1981 to include no first-time acting nominees, but this is the first since 1935 to consist of nothing but newcomers. The last time a group of Best Actor contenders were all strictly new to the category itself was 2006, when the only general veteran in the bunch was past supporting nominee (for “Gladiator”) Joaquin Phoenix (“Walk the Line”). Any of the current hopefuls would be the first total Oscars newcomer to take this prize since Rami Malek.

Since Nighy is English and both Farrell and Mescal are Irish, this is the third Best Actor roster in six years to...

Paul Mescal at an event for The Oscars (2023)
Paul Mescal’s mother says Oscar nominations were ‘too stressful’ to watch
Paul Mescal at an event for The Oscars (2023)
Paul Mescal’s parents have reacted to their son’s Oscar nomination.

Mescal was nominated for Best Actor on Tuesday (24 January) for his role in Charlotte Wells’s directorial debut, Aftersun, making him one of the category’s youngest-ever nominees at 26.

The actor’s mother Dearbhla told Ireland’s national broadcaster RTÉ that it was “too stressful” to watch the Oscar nominations live, so she found out the news on the family WhatsApp group.

“We’re very blessed, Donnacha [Mescal’s brother] was in New York, sitting in his office, Nelly [Mescal’s sister] was in London, she went straight to his flat.

“It’s an honour to watch him in this arena, I’m emotional a lot today.”

She added: “The fact that I got to see their three faces today, the love they have for each other as siblings is second to none, I’m very happy.”...

Olympia Dukakis, Oscar-Winning ‘Moonstruck’ Actress, Dies at 89
Image
Olympia Dukakis, a character actress best known for her Oscar-winning supporting turn in Norman Jewison’s “Moonstruck” and for her role as the wealthy widow in “Steel Magnolias,” has died. She was 89.

Dukakis’ brother, Apollo Dukakis, confirmed her death to Variety. Apollo Dukakis announced her death in a Facebook post, writing: “My beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City. After many months of failing health she is finally at peace and with her Louis.”

The actress was 56 when she came to prominence overnight thanks to her Oscar-winning turn in “Moonstruck,” the 1987 film in which she played, with an extraordinary comic ethnic gusto characteristic of the movie as a whole, the mother of Cher’s character. The Washington Post singled out Dukakis for praise: Cher and Nicolas Cage are “backed by an equally quirky cast of marvelous supporting players — especially Olympia Dukakis, whose role as Loretta...

Will Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman make Oscar history with wins for ‘The Father’?
Image
Our exclusive odds predict that Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman will both earn Oscar nominations for their roles in the Sony Pictures Classics release “The Father.” He is a strong Best Actor contender for his heartbreaking portrayal of a man dealing with dementia. And she is coming on strong in the Best Supporting Actress race for her work as the daughter struggling to come to terms with him.

Should both of these past Oscar champs prevail again this year, they’d be just the eighth pair of co-stars nominated in these categories to do so. In the 84 years since the supporting awards were introduced at the 9th Oscars, a lucky seven films can boast victories in both these races.

The last such duo from the same film to both win were Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker for “My Left Foot” in 1990. That marked the first of Day-Lewis’s three Best Actor trophies.

Home Alone 2 Pigeon Lady Brenda Fricker Will Sadly Spend This Dark Christmas Alone

Home Alone Pigeon Lady actress Brenda Fricker says she will be alone this Christmas. While Home Alone is arguably one of the best Christmas movies around, the sequel also has quite a lot of fans during the holiday season, though not quite as many. In the movie, Fricker's character is befriended by Macaulay Culkin's Kevin McCallister after he goes missing in New York City, and is simply known as the Pigeon Lady. In a new interview, the Academy Award winning actress revealed that this Christmas will be a lonely one, which unfortunately is the same for a lot of people around the world this year.

In the interview, Brenda Fricker was asked how she was going to be spending the holidays. "I'm 75 now, and I would be lying if I said it would be a nice and happy Christmas because I'm old and I live alone. It can be very dark,...

‘SNL’: Kristen Wiig Stars in ‘Home Alone 2’ Spoof as a Murderous Pigeon Lady
Image
One of the most iconic characters from 1992’s “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” is the Pigeon Lady. Played by Brenda Fricker in director Chris Columbus’ sequel, she’s the kindly itinerant who dwells in Central Park and helps Kevin McCallister (Macauley Culkin), marooned by his family in the big city, reunite with his family and evade capture by two-bit crooks Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern). Well, the Pigeon Lady got a whole new spin on this weekend’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” when host and “SNL” alum Kristen Wiig took the reins to play the character, opposite Melissa Villaseñor, who nails her impression of the slightly smarmy, tad naive, and obviously spoiled Kevin. Watch below.

In the sketch, Kevin is clearly oblivious to the Pigeon Lady’s state of poverty, bragging about his big hotel suite at the Plaza (in reference to where Kevin stayed...

‘SNL’: Kristen Wiig Is Pigeon Lady In ‘Home Alone 2’ Parody
Image
On Saturday Night Live‘s Christmas show, the sketch comedy spoofed a Christmas movie, the 1992 Home Alone 2: Lost In New York.

Host Kristen Wiig portrayed the Pigeon Lady as SNL in a “never before scene” from the movie, recreating a meeting with Kevin, played by SNL‘s Melissa Villaseñor, in Central Park.

In Home Alone 2, Pigeon Lady (played by Brenda Fricker) befriends Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) and helps him defeat the Wet Bandits.

In the SNL treatment, Wiig’s Pigeon Lady is hungry and needs shelter while Villaseñor’s Kevin is flaunting his father’s credit card that pays for his stay at the Plaza. He pulls out a box of pizza leftovers but instead of giving them to the woman, he feeds the pigeons. He eventually offers Pigeon Lady to get a suite at the Plaza for her. At that moment, the Wet Bandits show up and threaten...

Christian Bale at an event for The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
How many times have both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress gone to the same film?
Christian Bale at an event for The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
One film in contention at this year’s Oscars earned nominations for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress: “Vice.” How likely is it that leading man Christian Bale and supporting player Amy Adams will both win Academy Awards on Feb. 24? In the 82 years since the supporting awards were introduced at the 9th Oscars, a six lucky seven films could boast victories in both these races.

While this is the second most common of the four winningcombinations behind actress/supporting actress, it is also the one that has not happened in the longest time. The last such duo from the same film to both win were Brenda Fricker and Daniel Day-Lewis for “My Left Foor” in 1990. This was the first of Day-Lewis’s three Best Actor trophies – he could’ve repeated this pairing last year with Lesley Manville for Paul Thomas Anderson’s sublime “Phantom Thread” but, sadly, neither of them won.

Jodie Foster
Oscars flashback: Daniel Day-Lewis (‘My Left Foot’) receives 1st Best Actor from swooning Jodie Foster [Watch]
Jodie Foster
Jodie Foster could hardly hold back her feelings when announcing the Best Actor winner at the 1990 Oscars ceremony. Watch above as she swoons in saying the name of Daniel Day-Lewis for “My Left Foot,” his first ever victory at the Academy Awards.

In the 1980s, Day-Lewis was a young actor known mostly for British stage work and television, but he was building a reputation as an immersive method actor. He had received good notices for his performances in “A Room with a View,” as the wealthy suitor of Helena Bonham Carter, and as a romantic Czech doctor in “The Unbearable Lightness of Being.”

Oscars 2018: Here are all 156 living actresses and actors who could join a 90th anniversary family album on March 4

And now, the 90th anniversary show is already being prepared by producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd to air Sunday, March 4, on ABC with returning host Jimmy Kimmel. Paul Thomas Anderson
Daniel Day-Lewis is an Oscar good luck charm
Paul Thomas Anderson
“Phantom Thread”’s over-performance with six Oscar nominations was one of the biggest surprises during Tuesday’s announcement. But maybe we should’ve seen its major nominations for Best Picture, Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson) and Best Supporting Actress (Lesley Manville) coming because it has an Oscar good luck charm: Daniel Day-Lewis.

Day-Lewis boasts one of the best Oscar track records, with a record three Best Actor wins from his previous five nominations from a comparatively scant resume of 20 films. He received his sixth nomination as expected for “Phantom Thread,” and now for all six of his bids, his films and directors earned nominations as well. The previous five are: 1989’s “My Left Foot” and Jim Sheridan; 1993’s “In the Name of the Father” and Sheridan; 2002’s “Gangs of New York” and Martin Scorsese; 2007’s “There Will Be Blood” and Anderson; and 2012’s “Lincoln” and Steven Spielberg. None of them won.

Oscars flashback: Iraq invasion in 2003 almost cancelled 75th anniversary Oscars family album reunion of 59 acting winners [Watch]
The 75th anniversary ceremony for the Academy Awards almost didn’t happen as scheduled. When America led an invasion of Iraq that weekend, broadcast network ABC pleaded with producer Gil Cates and Academy president Frank Piersen to move the event back a week. The duo claimed it would be too expensive to make the switch and that the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood would be unavailable.

On March 23, 2003, the ceremony went live on ABC as scheduled, hosted by comedian, actor, and writer Steve Martin, with the Best Picture proclaimed to be “Chicago.” However, several presenters such as Cate Blanchett, Jim Carrey, and Will Smith cancelled their appearances. That day’s events also caused several past winners to bail out on appearing in the Oscars family album slated for late in the show. Similar to a segment five years early for the 70th anniversary show (read more on the link above), the...

Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything (2014)
Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones to receive Santa Barbara's Cinema Vanguard Award
Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything (2014)
The Santa Barbara Film Festival's Cinema Vanguard Award was created in recognition of actors who have forged their own path, taking artistic risks and making a significant and unique contribution to film. It's makes for as subjective a reading as anything, I suppose, but this year's honorees are a fair enough choice: "The Theory of Everything" stars Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones. "These two actors continue to impress," Sbiff Roger Durling said. "Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones's performances together in 'The Theory of Everything' are nothing short of an astonishing collaboration, recalling the alchemy of Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker in 'My Left Foot.'" The accolade will be awarded during a tribute presentation on Thursday, Jan. 29. Previous Cinema Vanguard honorees include Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, Amy Adams, Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo, Nicole Kidman, Christoph Waltz, Vera Farmiga, Stanley Tucci, Peter Sarsgaard, Kristin Scott Thomas,...

Revisiting So I Married An Axe Murderer
One of Mike Myers' lesser-known films, 1993's So I Married An Axe Murderer is well worth revisiting, Aliya writes...

Fear of commitment is one of those topics that pops up a lot in the world of romantic comedies. Jerry Maguire (1996) shows Tom Cruise struggling to say "I love you" in a convincing fashion, and in When Harry Met Sally (1989) Billy Crystal makes terrible excuses to leave early in the morning after each date. Failure To Launch (2006) spelled it out more bluntly than perhaps we needed – in Hollywood, men are afraid of love. Love is a scary business. Even so, it rarely comes with a health warning.

So I Married An Axe Murderer is that rare film. It suggests that the lead character is right to be terrified of commitment. In fact, running away might just save his life. This is a tricky idea to get right, because the audience...

Smackdown 1989: Anjelica, Brenda, Dianne, Lena, and Julia Roberts
Presenting the Nominated Supporting Actresses of 1989. Motherhood was the loose theme of the shortlist with a determined mom (Brenda Fricker) facing off against a determined-to-be-a-mom bride (Julia Roberts). Add in 1986's Oscar winner in this category (Dianne Wiest) as a mom so exasperated maybe she wished she hadn't become one in one of 89's top ten box office hits. Rounding out the list was a late breaking pair of women with claims on the same married man. Only one of them is married to him but... well, let's just say it's complicated. It's complicated for all five of these women.

The Nominees

Then-unknown Irish character actress Brenda Fricker, gifted with a screen partner who would go on to become Oscar's most-winning Best Actor, took the gold. But the other four were in-demand hot commodities. Lena Olin who had emerged the year before (The Unbearable Lightness of Being) as a memorably...

Isa of the Day: Michael Fister of Angel Grace
Our International Sales Agent (Isa) of the Day coverage resumed for this year's Cannes Film Festival. We feature successful, upcoming, innovative and trailblazing agents from around the world (during and after the festival) and cover the latest trends in sales and distribution. Beyond the numbers and deals, this segment will also share inspirational and unique stories of how these individuals have evolved and paved their way in the industry, and what they envision for the new waves in global cinema.

Angel Grace Productions is based in Los Angeles, and was created with over night inspiration by Michael Fister, who has 22 years of experience in the film industry. His interest in international film sales and distribution is also influenced by his experience growing up around the world.

The Angel Grace VP of Acquisitions Linda Posivak notes, "One thing that sets Michael apart from many, is that it's not just a job. It's his passion. He knows in his heart that this is where he should be. He feels and breathes it. It's more than just a job to him."

Michael has kicked off the Angel Grace slate with the Nora Ephron prizewinner "Farah Goes Bang" by Meera Menon, and "Conspiracy of Silence" (by John Deery) starring Academy Award winner Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot), and Golden Globe nominee Hugh Bonneville (Downtown Abbey). Angel Grace is quickly expanding and will go from acquisitions to productions later this year.

Michael talks about how he started Angel Grace and more about his drive to share meaningful films:

How did you start Angel Grace?

I worked as an executive at ABC and Turner Pictures. I caught the festival and market bug back then, but went on a detour for several years, working on the creative agency side with the studios (doing one sheets and trailers). A few years ago, I realized I was really missing the craziness and excitement of festivals and markets, so I got my toes wet and came back to Cannes. I knew this was what I was supposed to be doing.

I've been doing this work through various ways and means, but it was really just less than a year ago when I woke up in the middle of the night and realized I needed to do this on my own. Then then one day I just said, "I'm going to Berlin!" Within 24 hours, I had both of my films; 24 hours, I'm not kidding! Obviously, I had met the filmmakers prior (and the films were on my radar) but I just picked up the phone, called them and it all fell into place. It's great, and I'm happy to be here.

Please talk about the Angel Grace slate.

I brought two films to Cannes. One is "Farah Goes Bang", which had just won the Nora Ephron prize at the Tribeca Film Festival. It's a fun and sweet "girl road comedy". The girls are best friends, and they're on the road campaigning for John Kerry. Two of the girls are also trying to get the third girl to lose her virginity during the road trip. The fact that it won the esteemed Norah Ephron prize says a lot, and you immediately know that it's not tacky or sleazy. Instead, it's witty, funny and very sweet.

The second film is "Conspiracy of Silence", with Academy Award winner Brenda Fricker, and Hugh Bonneville from Downtown Abbey. It was actually Chris O'Dowd's film debut. It's an older thriller that never got the release it deserved. It partially deals with things that have gone on in the Catholic Church. I had been talking to the director about his newer projects, and then I saw this film as a sample of his work and fell in love with it. It won a National Board of Review Award, and a few nominations at the Irish Film and Television Awards including Best Director. It's a powerful movie that is actually more relevant in today's society than when it was made.

Clearly, I'm not afraid of difficult films!

What do you consider when choosing films for Angel Grace?

I go with my gut feeling when I choose films, and gravitate more toward festival films, which tend to be more director or cast driven. It's really the niche that we'll stay in.

I'm open to most genres; although I'm not interested in things like horror or slasher movies, especially with a name like Angel Grace. I'm open to anything that's good, and I want to put positivity out there through the films that we choose.

Personally and professionally speaking, I tend to lean more towards drama, art house, and poignant films. There are a lot of movies out there at festivals that deserve to be seen. Hopefully, I can help those films that would otherwise get lost in the shuffle--that's when I really feel I’m accomplishing something.

Aside from the business, why do you do this work?

Other than Tribeca, "Farah Goes Bang" has won several other festivals over the past few months. Women in the audience are actually saying they are finding their voice in this movie, and in this character of Farah. That means something, and I think it's important to share films that can impact people's lives like that.

A Smackdown Summer Cometh
When I announced that The Film Experience would be the new home of the long departed series Stinky Lulu's Smackdown last summer I figured you would be thrilled. It's our kind of party. I promised Stinky we'd do at least six smackdowns if we brought it back. With four battles already behind us -- pie throwing 1952, shady and sinister 1968, warm and kooky 1980, and troubled histrionic 2003-- let's wrap it up with four more.

Rather than announce at the end of each month, I figured we'd give you all four lineups in case you'd like more time to catch up over the hot months and cast your votes in the reader polling that accompanies each battle. Those votes count toward the final outcome, so more of you should join in.

These annums were chosen after comment reading, dvd searching, handwringing, and also to rope in prospective panelists (to be announced later...

Saint Patrick’s Day: 10 Movies That Represent ‘Irishness’ Best
Scanbox Entertainment

It’s March 17th and we can now officially celebrate Ireland’s British born patron saint and stock up on some flicks to get us in the spirit of Saint Patrick.

For a culture enriched with such a storied and turbulent history, ‘Irishness’ is all too often portrayed on screen to the global market as a very primitive and one dimensional identity. It is quite strange considering, the small nation that boasts such a rich artistic tradition, which could rival any on the planet, is so lethargically diluted to idle cliched phrases and beer swilling Paddies.

In spite of the annoying and exhausted stereotypes, there are still a number of movies which embody and adhere to the complexity of Irish identity. Yes, there are a cornucopia of films which depict Irish identity as shamefully opposite. Such inferior silver screen presentations include the likes of Gerard Butler in P.S. I Love You...
