Ain’t No Mo’, the Broadway debut of author and star Jordan E. Cooper, opened at the Belasco Theatre on Dec. 1 to the sort of reviews producers and playwrights dream about. Even the few critics who weren’t completely won over couldn’t help but point out a singular brilliance at work here, not to mention a stars-in-the-making cast and more laugh-out-loud moments than most of the rest of Broadway combined. Time for another curiosity review, of a grindhouse gut-basher from the 1970s — a subgenre I avoided when new.

Ducking out of a theatrical run in the vein of its predecessor, Sony’s Crackle and Legendary are partnering to release zombie-infested sequel Dead Rising: Endgame across streaming and video-on-demand services later in 2016, and it’s understood production is now officially underway on the film’s Vancouver set.

Continuing on the undead adventure, Jesse Metcalfe (John Tucker Must Die) reprises his Watchtower role as Chase Carter, now tasked with unravelling new mysteries that spawn a government conspiracy. In attempting to manufacture a cure, the plot description hints that the afflicted residents of East Mission City were instead used as the test subjects for Billy Zane’s “handsome, cruel” scientist, Rand.

Behind the lens, director Zach Lipovsky won’t return for Endgame and is replaced by Pat Williams (Cotinuum). That said, Crackle’s follow-up kept hold of its writing duo from the original, ensuring that both Tim Carter and Michael Ferris...

It’s true; no matter what certain networks may claim about their “winter finales,” winter doesn’t actually start until December 21, and isn’t over until March 20. Syfy, at least, understands this, and has announced their appropriately-titled winter schedule accordingly.

Happily this means that, starting on Monday, January 14, 2013, we will have some great television to get us through the cold months, including the return of Being Human and Lost Girl, and the premiere of Continuum, and later in the week, the return of Ghost Hunters and Face Off.

Tonight sees the summer finale of USA Network's Burn Notice on USA at 9/8C. The action-packed espionage series debuted on the channel (a division of NBC Universal) in 2007. It was part of the network's shift away from sci-fi shows that included The Dead Zone and The 4400 (I still haven't forgiven them for canceling that). Since then Burn Notice has grown in popularity and scope and earlier this year it was renewed for a fifth and a sixth season.

Like several of USA's shows, Burn Notice has won over critics and audiences with its mix of thrills, drama and offbeat humor. That is the sort of thing that scriptwriters, directors and cast are usually credited with, and rightly so. Penka Kouneva was born in Bulgaria, but she's been living in the United States since 1990. During this time, she estabilished herself as one of the most reliable orchestrators in the business. She worked extensively with Patrick Williams and now she's one of the regular orchestrators of Cliff Eidelman, Alfons Conde and Steve Jablonsky. Apart from orchestrating, Penka also started a film scoring career which currently includes titles like Chupacabra Terror, The Third Nail and most recently Midnight Movie.

What could you tell us about your musical education?

My mother was a professor of music theory and analysis at the Bulgarian Conservatory of music. I went to a High School of Music, then to the Bulgarian Conservatory (with a degree in Theory). In 1990, I received Mary Duke Biddle Fellowship for Master's degree in composition at Duke.

I got Masters and Doctorate at Duke University where my teacher Stephen Jaffe was exceptonally supportive and encouraging.
