We found out last year that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, would be getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release from Synapse Films. They were originally aiming for a Halloween 2023 release, but since they missed that month they ended up giving the movie a limited edition release last month. Those 6,666 units sold out so fast, with fans crashing the Synapse Films website along the way, that the company has now wisely decided to put together a standard edition of the Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release as well. Today, they announced that the street date for the standard edition is March 11th.

They were originally aiming for a Halloween 2023 release, but since they missed that month they’re bringing this gift to the world this month instead. Pre-orders can now be made through the Synapse Films website, DiabolikDVD, and Orbit DVD – and copies are expected to start shipping out next week! This release is limited to just 6,666 units with a suggested retail price of $66.66, and as of right now there are no plans for a standard edition release.

Synapse will not be shipping outside of North America, but DiabolikDVD and Orbit DVD will accept international orders.

The good news is that preorders are open now, with the release shipping as soon as next week, October 27.

Byron Allen’s media company has enlisted a new finance chief to oversee the business of its most well-known TV brand, The Weather Channel.

Christopher T. Young, who held C-suite roles at Latino-focused media company Entravision over the course of a 15-year-plus tenure, was hired as CFO at The Weather Channel and will hold the title of executive vice president at Allen Media Group, the company said Wednesday.

Young, who also ran outdoor ad service company Vista Media and held titles at several banking institutions, will be based in Los Angeles and in Atlanta, where the Weather Channel campus operates from. He’ll report to Allen and Allen’s CFO Christopher Malone.

Allen had purchased the linear TV network The Weather Channel for what was said to be in the $300 million range in 2018. (The digital assets of the brand were sold by Ibm last year to private equity investment firm Francisco Partners.

What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see this one – written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.

It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

The German legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the basis of two recent horror productions. The first of these “twin films” to receive a wide release is Erlingur Thoroddsen’s take, which shares the same title as Anthony Waller’s adaptation. And although both reimaginings feature demonic updates of that famous ratcatcher, only Thoroddsen’s story appears to underscore the musical component.

The Piper finds Charlotte Hope’s (The Nun) character Mel trapped in a familiar situation: her aspirations come at a great cost, and the consequences will be harmful. Here the young composer wants a future in her orchestra ensemble as well as the means to take care of her deaf daughter (Aoibhe O’Flanagan). Stealing a concerto from the estate of her recently departed mentor (Louise Gold) seems like the only option, but once the protagonist goes through with the plan, Mel’s conductor (Julian Sands) then...

Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.

Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Back in June of 2021, it was announced that Julian Sands, best known around here for playing the Warlock in the 1989 horror film fittingly titled Warlock and then coming back for the sequel Warlock: The Armageddon, had signed on to star in a new genre project called The Piper, which puts a horrific twist on the legend of the Pied Piper. Sadly, it was only seven months later that we heard Sands had gone missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy. Six months later, his body was found. He did get to work on The Piper before he passed away, though, and the film is now ready to make its way out into the world. It’s set to receive a theatrical and digital/on demand release on March 8th, and with that date exactly one month away a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department in California arrested Loay Abdelfattah Alnaji on Thursday with the intention of charging him with the involuntary manslaughter of a pro-Israel protester, Paul Kessler, who died after an alleged altercation with Alnaji last week. The Edinburgh international film festival has announced the opening film for its 2023 edition, months after the shock news that the long-running event’s existence was in doubt after its organisers, Centre for the Moving Image (Cmi), shut down abruptly in October and called in administrators.

The festival’s high-profile opening gala slot has been handed to Silent Roar, the debut feature from director Johnny Barrington, produced by The Inbetweeners Movie’s Christopher Young. Described by the festival as “a teenage tale of surfing, sex and hellfire”, Silent Roar was filmed on the remote community of Uig, on Lewis in Scotland’s Western Isles and stars Louis McCartney and Ella Lily Hyland.

Exclusive: David Morse (The Chair), Bill Heck (Locke & Key) and Jaklyn Bejarano have been set to star in Santa Rita Film Co.’s La Gloria, a drama exploring the humanity and political abstractions surrounding the U.S.-Mexico border. The latter came aboard following a nationwide casting search in Mexico.

The film set in South Texas, which is currently shooting in the area, follows the story of Carson Tidwell (Morse), an embittered and isolated rancher who mistakenly shoots a young, pregnant migrant girl named Irena (Bejarano) who is crossing his property. Confronted with his actions and threatened with a criminal investigation, Carson must decide whether to help Irena recuperate on his ranch or face criminal charges led by his son (Heck), an agent for the U.S. Border Patrol.

Christopher Young’s script is based on the personal experiences of Joseph Todd Walker, who is directing, in his feature debut.

Prior to reviewing the new installment in the long-running (35 years!) Hellraiser horror movie franchise, I did my due diligence. I rewatched all 10 prior films, from the acclaimed 1987 original and its 1988 sequel through the ensuing two theatrical and six direct-to-video entries. Throughout the marathon, I took copious notes, careful to track the characters and plot developments through their many permutations.

Nah, just kidding!

Sure, I saw the first two films back in the day, and may even possibly have caught 1992’s Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and 1996’s Hellraiser IV: Bloodline. Scored to Death—New Documentary Explores the Music that Makes us Shriek with Terror: "For the first time, a feature-length documentary explores the fascinating relationship between music and horror cinema. On September 27, 2022, Scored to Death Entertainment LLC will launch a Kickstarter campaign that will run through Halloween. The funds raised will help make the film, Scored to Death: The Dark Art of Scary Movie Music—currently in production—a reality.

Author and filmmaker J. Blake Fichera is producing and directing the film, based on his popular Scored to Death book series. Scored to Death: Conversations with Some of Horror's Greatest Composers and Scored to Death 2: More Conversations with Some of Horror's Greatest Composers explored the craft of horror film music through in-depth interviews with an eclectic all-star group of 30 composers who lent their talents to many of the genre's most beloved films and franchises.

Exclusive: The Spanish Princess and Game of Thrones actress Charlotte Hope will star with Julian Sands (The Killing Fields) in feature horror The Piper, which is now underway at Millennium Media’s Nu Boyana Studios in Bulgaria.

The film, a dark re-imagining of the Pied Piper tale, will chart how a young composer is given the opportunity of a lifetime when she is tasked with finishing her late mentor’s concerto. But she soon discovers that playing the music summons deadly consequences, leading her to uncover the disturbing origins of the melody and the evil force it has awakened: the Pied Piper.

Erlingur Thoroddsen (Rift) is directing from his script and Christopher Young (Hellraiser) will compose the score. Millennium is continuing sales on the movie during the Cannes virtual market.

Producers are Bernard Kira, Les Weldon and on behalf of Millennium Media include Yariv Lerner, Jeffrey Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, and Tanner Mobley.

Nominees for the Hollywood Music in Media Awards are being unveiled Friday, with a packed slate of songs and scores in film, TV and videogame categories. First Artists Management, the Los Angeles-based talent agency specializing in composers and music supervisors, is expanding its operations by opening an office in London and hiring two new agents.

Hamish Duff joins First Artists from independent management and publishing company Involved Productions. He will head the London office and oversee all U.K. and European operations, “creating a Transatlantic approach to representation,” said First Artists founder Vasi Vangelos.

Duff joins First Artists with his clients including Solomon Grey, Clark, Alex Baranowski, Will Gregory, Blanck Mass, Hannah Peel, Nico Casal, and The Grandbrothers. This is believed to be the first major U.S. composer agency to establish an overseas office.

Sabrina Hutchinson will also join Vangelos and son Alexander Vangelos in the Los Angeles office. As we start gearing up for the Holiday Shopping Season, there are a new batch of home media releases arriving this week, and a few of those titles might feel right at home on your wish list this year. Heathers, a personal favorite of mine is getting the Steelbook treatment this Tuesday, courtesy of Rlje Films, and in terms of recent horror releases, both 47 Meters Down: Uncaged and Bliss are both hitting Blu-ray and DVD as well.

Scream Factory is showing some love to Stacey Keach and Road Games (1981) this week, and for those of you who enjoy your sibling survival stories with a bit of a nasty twist to them, Arrow Video has put together a special edition release of Flowers in the Attic.

In this golden age of horror, viewers have been treated to eclectically spooky scores from a wide range of talented composers, and at the 50th annual San Diego Comic-Con, some of the most mesmerizing composers will gather for a panel to discuss the making of their memorably haunting music.

Prolific Portuguese production outfit Rosa Filmes, one of the producers on Albert Serra’s Un Certain Regard selection Liberté, is preparing a raft of new features, including new films with Serra, Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz (also a Cannes regular) and The Inbetweeners producer Christopher Young.

This activity comes as Portugal’s production incentive (a cash rebate system worth up to 30%) is making the country significantly more attractive as a coproduction partner. Since the start of 2018, the new rebate has made €36m available for production.

Author Stephen King is arguably one of the most well known and beloved writers. Often called the ‘King of Horror’, his work is familiar to countless audiences (be they avid readers or not) and he is the living author with the most film adaptations to his name. So it is no new event to see a King story being adapted for the screen again but after Andrés Muschietti’s record-setting success with 2017’s It: Chapter One (the eagerly awaited Chapter Two lands later this year), there is no doubt as feverish as ever a taste for some of the author’s stories to make the jump to the big screen.
