Lin Manuel-Miranda opened up about writing seven songs for Mufasa: The Lion King, the upcoming prequel to the beloved Disney animated classic.
The Grammy-winning artist stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he discussed his upcoming stint in Broadway’s All In: Comedy About Love, recent concept album Warriors and Mufasa, among other things.
Miranda explained to the late night host that he was writing the concept album and the music for the Disney movie simultaneously, and sometimes, they overlapped.
“Anytime Mufasa started cursing, I was like, ‘That’s the wrong one,'” he said. Actually, honestly, I think working on Mufasa raised the bar for me because I knew was stepping into the world of Lion King. That original album is like an all bangers, no skip album.”
He continued, “It’s only five songs. Everyone forgets that the original movie is only five songs. ‘Circle of Life,...

Ben Affleck’s reputation in Hollywood didn’t happen overnight — it was built step by step. Along the way, he kept proving just how talented and smart he really is. After years of acting, it wasn’t until he took the director’s seat for Argo that people got to see what he’s truly capable of.

To paraphrase Michael Jordan, Republicans buy movie tickets too, and Disney wants them to keep doing so. So Rachel Zegler, the outspoken star of the studio’s upcoming live-action “Snow White” remake, has apologized for a forceful statement against Donald Trump she made after the former president’s re-election last week.
Last week, Zegler, who is currently starring in “Romeo & Juliet” on Broadway, posted on Instagram a reaction to Trump’s re-election that included statements like “another four years of hatred, leaning us towards a world I do not want to live in,” “there is a deep deep sickness in this country,” and “May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace.”
Conservatives reacted to her statement with outrage. On her show, former Fox News host Megyn Kelly said, “Hey Disney, you’re gonna have to redo your film again, because this woman is a pig,...

While things ended on a sour note for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez back in the early 2000s, many felt their second shot at romance might be one for the storybooks. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be far from the truth, as after months of alleged tension between the duo, Lopez finally filed for divorce from the Justice League star. This wasn’t surprising as the two were reportedly living separate lives for quite some time now.

Although it seemed the duo’s two-year-long marriage might be heading for an ugly end, as it was reported that there was no prenuptial agreement between them, it seems the two might not be able to cut ties completely.

Exclusive: We’ve seen efforts to share risk and upside in success, and many times they come and go. Artists Equity, hatched by pals Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and backed by a long-term financial commitment from RedBird Capital billionaire Gerry Cardinale, has a real chance to reshape the tenuous pay landscape in a talent-friendly way. Since Deadline first broke their plans, Affleck and Damon have used their personal relationships and the hard-knock lessons from over 30 years of their Oscar careers to create a sound equity participation formula for those involved in their projects. It’s a formula they believe provides more transparency in profit sharing than is available from the studios and streamers that will release the films Artists Equity bankrolls.
Housed in Los Angeles offices with a staff that has swelled past 70 employees working on film, TV, a full-scale ad agency and a lean-in on documentaries, Artists Equity is growing quickly.

Ben Affleck returned to the director’s chair after seven years with the biographical sports drama Air. The film was based on the legendary deal between Nike and basketball legend Michael Jordan, which led to the creation of the Air Jordans. The film was received well by critics and audiences alike and went on to earn over $90 million at the box office.
Affleck is currently dealing with his divorce from his ex-wife Jennifer Lopez after a highly publicized separation. While Lopez works on her music, Affleck is definitely looking for a new project to get his hands on. One event that has the potential to be as amazing as Air is the historic 1999 Women’s World Cup final where Brandi Chastain celebrated their win by removing her jersey, leading to a jump in sales of her iconic Nike sports bra.

In 1990 the sports world’s biggest star, Michael Jordan, was asked to endorse Harvey Gantt, a Black candidate challenging the incumbent North Carolina senator, noted racist Jesse Helms. As he confirmed in the 2020 docuseries “The Last Dance,” Jordan chose not to engage, famously telling teammates, “Republicans buy sneakers, too.”
Jordan might have gotten away with such neutrality then, but in the current political climate, it’s increasingly difficult for celebrities to stay on the sidelines.
Part of that has to do with social media, which wasn’t a concern when Jordan was winning championships for the Chicago Bulls. Even more, though, remaining silent today can easily be spun into tacitly backing one side or the other of a political divide that has become so toxic and polarized many perceived allies – and fans – won’t readily accept silence as an option.

As long as I have been interested in sports, I gravitated towards cricket and football. I occasionally played badminton and table tennis, but not as much as cricket or football. The sports teachers at my school did try to get the kids into stuff like basketball, baseball, and hockey, but they didn’t speak to me. Since I am talking about only basketball today, I’ll admit that even my cinematic knowledge of it was limited to Space Jam. That said, recently, the YouTube algorithm started throwing clips from NBA games in my direction. To be clear, I hadn’t watched anything even remotely related to basketball prior to the appearance of those videos on my timeline. But after a week of binge-watching those shorts, my knowledge about the players had graduated from Steph Curry and LeBron James to Nikola, Luka, Giannis, Harden, and Yuki Kawamura. I knew all about slam dunks,...

William Golden is an Academy Award-winning editor making his directorial debut in the Amazon Studios film Unstoppable. The film follows the story of Anthony Robles, who defied expectations of having one leg to become a National Champion wrestler. Anthony Robles didn’t let the fact that he was born without a leg deter him from his goal of one day attending the prestigious wrestling college Iowa. However, between the disability and troubled home life, Iowa and most schools don’t want to invest in Robles, no matter how good he is. Robles decides to attempt to become a walk-on at Arizona State instead of taking a full ride at Drexel to help support his mother and family.

I got out of the Uber in industrial Brooklyn, trying to get my bearings on this sweatbox morning. There was no address on the brewery to my right or the scrapyard across the street. I tried the front door of a brick-block building, but found it firmly locked. Five minutes later, a middle-aged man pulled up, wearing gold-tint rims and a Kangol hat. He, too, tried the handle of the door, then stepped back, puzzled as I was. What had seemed like a brilliant idea in March now felt, in June,...

Alcon Entertainment, producers of “Blade Runner 2049,” have accused Elon Musk and Tesla of infringing its copyrights — alleging the tech mogul blatantly copied an iconic scene from the movie with an AI-generated image intended to promote Tesla’s new self-driving taxi, after Alcon refused to grant any rights related to the 2017 sci-fi pic.
Musk opted for troll mode in responding to news of the lawsuit — saying “That movie sucked” — rather than addressing specifics of the complaint. Tesla and Warner Bros. Discovery, which also is named in the suit, have not commented on the litigation.
How strong are Alcon’s arguments from a legal perspective? Intellectual-property lawyers said the company probably will have a tough time proving that Musk and Tesla directly infringed Alcon’s “Blade Runner 2049” copyrights. But they also said Alcon could be able to make a case that Musk and Tesla’s alleged misappropriation of the movie represented “false endorsement.

Mere months after coming unnervingly close to killing off Conan O’Brien, Hot Ones just hosted another comedy icon of sorts: Peter Griffin. The popular YouTube show, which is predicated on the idea that celebrities will only abandon regurgitated talk show banter in favor of genuine human thought when their taste buds are being bombarded with brain-melting levels of spiciness, just crossed over with Family Guy in order to celebrate the cartoon’s 25th anniversary.
The Seth MacFarlane patriarch began the episode by claiming that he was happy to have been invited to the “decline of American journalism,” and the whole thing ultimately ended with a pantsless Peter Griffin attempting to shove his hot sauce-coated finger into host Sean Evans’ eyeball.

This isn’t the first time that Evans hosted a literal cartoon character on his show, possibly because Hot Ones canonically takes place inside of the Who Framed Roger Rabbit universe.

When Larsa Pippen first started dating Marcus Jordan, it made headlines for all the wrong reasons. People felt like the relationship was incredibly inappropriate based on their 16-year age gap. Another detail that made it weirder is that Larsa used to be married to Scottie Pippen who once played on the same basketball team as Marcus’s father, Michael Jordan.
Larsa has continually been dragged for pursuing a relationship with Marcus, but that never stopped her from dating him. They went public with their love story in January 2023. However, since then, they’ve broken up and gotten back together multiple times. Their most recent split might just be their last, based on some of the things Larsa’s publicly been saying about her love life.

Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and… Chevy Chase? In an ad that seems to have flown under the sports world radar, the Caddyshack golfer is now mercilessly heckling putters from other comedies — namely, Happy Gilmore’s Shooter McGavin.
Yep, it’s an unlikely pairing for a hot, impossible-to-buy collab from Travis Scott and Jordan Brand. But there’s Shooter, lining up for a putt to win a pair of Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Low Og Sp “Medium Olive” sneakers. “It’s easy!” promises a sign on top of a pile of shoeboxes. But then along comes Chase, chauffeured around in a golf cart by a grinning flunky deemed unworthy of dialogue.
“Oh, you’re going for the shoes! I get you,” hollers Chase, pointing down at his own Nike kicks. “I already won mine.”
“Good for you. Excellent,” says a distracted Shooter, trying to refocus. “Congratulations.”

In the fourth episode of “Starting 5,” the Netflix docuseries tracking the 2023-2024 season of the National Basketball Association through a handful of star players, LeBron James lets off some post-game steam by teasing his wife, Savannah. “Stop!” she says, laughing. “We’re on camera!”
“That’s my camera,” James replies. The subtext is clear: Nothing will make the final cut if he doesn’t want it to.
James’ production company, Uninterrupted, is the primary backer of “Starting 5,” which juxtaposes the guiding light of the Los Angeles Lakers with four colleague-rivals: Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat, Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Domantas Sabonis of the Sacramento Kings. For the 10-episode season, Uninterrupted partnered with two other outfits associated with public figures: Omaha Productions, the shingle of ex-NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, and Higher Ground, the Hollywood venture of Barack and Michelle Obama.

The basketball legend is recognized as one of the best defenders ever in the game, famous for his finger-wag move that represented a “not-on-my-watch” gesture. Over the span of 18 seasons in the NBA, Mutombo earned a huge net worth from his salary and endorsement deals.

“Nickel Boys,” RaMell Ross’s adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2019 novel, opened New York Film Festival’s 62nd edition on Friday night. The historical drama, which received rave reviews out of Telluride in September, marks the Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker’s narrative debut.
On a muggy, overcast evening in the Upper West Side, Ross and the film’s stars — including Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Daveed Diggs — walked the carpet at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall before introducing the film to the nearly-packed theater.
“You can feel the energy, it’s like Michael Jordan is in the arena,” Ross told Variety ahead of the screening. “It feels like something crazy is gonna happen in there.”
“Emotional” might be a more apt descriptor of the screening experience. The two-and-a-half-hour film follows two Black teenagers who become wards of a barbaric juvenile reformatory in Jim Crow-era Florida. Herisse...

Exclusive: Justin Baldoni spent much of the summer embroiled in a hushed battle with his It Ends with Us co-star Blake Lively. Now, he’s become entangled in another row, this time involving race and basketball.
In 2021, former NBA star Craig Hodges, who won two championships with the Chicago Bulls, struck a deal with Wayfarer, the production company run by Baldoni and billionaire Steve Sarowitz, to turn his 2017 book into a documentary.
Given the success of The Last Dance, the hit ESPN series featuring his former teammate Michael Jordan, the idea was to take a different look at the same period, using Hodges’ book Long Shot: The Triumphs and Struggles of an NBA Freedom Fighter as source material.
However, the three-point expert has spent much of the past 12 months trying to get the rights to the project back after it was shelved by Wayfarer last year.

The marketing world is rife with celebrity drink sponsorships, and while you might think of tequilas, gins, and whiskey, DJ Khaled is taking it in a different direction. He partnered with Nesquik on a cinnamon bun-flavored milk drink dubbed Another Bun. It may seem like an unusual collaboration, but even Khaled’s detractors would have to admit that he’s a singular figure in pop culture.

Progress on Cola Wars is bubbling up, as the Sony Pictures feature has attached Judd Apatow to direct with Steven Spielberg to produce, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Apatow is set to helm the film that is still in its initial stages of development after the studio bought a pitch for the project earlier this year. Cola Wars is set to focus on the battle for soda supremacy that kicked off in the mid-1980s as Pepsi aimed to challenge Coke’s longtime dominance in the soft drink space.
Jason Shuman and Ben Queen are working on the script. Spielberg is producing Cola Wars through his company Amblin Entertainment, with Maia Eyre overseeing the film for Sony.
Shuman co-created the Apple TV+ series Acapulco and served as an executive producer on the HBO show Winning Time. Queen earned credits for his writing work on the animated sequel The Addams Family 2...

Exclusive: Judd Apatow has attached to direct and Steven Spielberg has come aboard to produce Cola Wars, the film in development at Sony. Spielberg will produce through his Amblin Entertainment banner.
Deadline revealed back in April that the studio bought the project for $1 million-plus as a pitch, telling the true story of Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola. It uncapped the “Cola Wars” of the mid-1980s, which included everything from Michael Jackson’s fiery mishap to the New Coke debacle, as the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender (Pepsi) vying for the No. 1 spot (Coca-Cola).
The Cola Wars pitch is being written by Jason Shuman and Ben Queen. Shuman is the co-creator/writer of Apple’s hit show Acapulco and was executive producer on HBO’s Winning Time, and the producer of 2022’s Oscar-nominated indie To Leslie.
