2016 was a pretty good year for FX as five wins at the Primetime Emmys for The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story helped it to a total 18 trophies at the 68th Emmy Awards.

Eight years on, with new owners in the shape of The Walt Disney Company, it was an even better night for John Landgraf’s team.

FX won 36 awards across Primetime Emmys and the Creative Arts Awards, helped by record-breaking showings for Shōgun and The Bear. It was FX’s best ever Emmy performance and its most significant since the night Courtney B. Vance, Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown picked up awards for the Ryan Murphy-created limited series, as well as a win for Baskets’ Louie Anderson.

The network managed to break the hegemony of HBO and Netflix, which have been battling it out for most wins since the Reed Hastings-founded company entered original programming over a decade ago.

Back in the 1980s, when the idea of wealthy sociopaths flagrantly breaking the rules was considered hilarious, we got Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the iconic comedy starring Matthew Broderick as the titular teenage rebel.

The movie, of course, finds Ferris skipping class by faking an illness, thanks to the power of mannequins and synthesizers. While most of us would be happy to spend a day off in that sweet bedroom, Ferris, along with his girlfriend Sloane and best friend Cameron, heads into Chicago, where he catches a baseball game, visits an art gallery and hijacks a float during a crowded parade that’s happening in the middle of a workday for some unknown reason.

What’s CBS doing in primetime next weekend? Funny You Should Ask.

The network will air four new episodes of the comedy game show Byron Allen Presents Funny You Should Ask from 8-10 p.m. Saturday, December 9. Hosted by The Mole‘s Jon Kelley, the veteran syndicated series from Allen Media Group features a panel of comedians who interact with contestants for cash and laughs.

The CBS episodes will feature Byron Allen, Adam Carolla, Whitney Cummings, Vivica A. Fox, Billy Gardell, Jamie Kennedy, Natasha Leggero, Jon Lovitz, Jeff Ross and Sheryl Underwood.

“Funny You Should Ask is the perfect comedy game show for the entire family,” said Allen, founder, chairman and CEO of Allen Media Group. “The world needs laughs now more than ever.”

“Poker Face” fan-favorite Natasha Lyonne received a Best Comedy Actress Emmy nomination this year alongside Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”) and Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”). As of this writing, Lyonne is in last place to win at Gold Derby, with less than 3% of our prognosticators backing her. However, the fact that she recently gained the favor of the Television Critics Association proves she should be taken much more seriously. Are we underestimating her at the 2023 Emmys?

Given Lyonne’s status as the very first regular acting Emmy nominee from any Peacock program and her show’s absence from all other major categories, her doubters initially had a leg to stand on, but that isn’t the case anymore. Her TCA Award victory for Individual Achievement in Comedy is an undeniably big deal and gives her many statistical advantages that should cause her competitors and naysayers concern.

Kristin Bjorklund, a longtime member of the Family Feud game show producing team, died in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 5 of sepsis after undergoing a kidney transplant. She was 67.

Kristin Bjorklund, who worked on the game show Family Feud for more than 40 years, most recently as co-executive producer, has died. She was 67.

Bjorklund died Sunday in Phoenix from sepsis after undergoing a kidney transplant, her friend Diane Hamilton announced. She had been on a transplant waiting list for years.

Bjorklund was “my co-worker, my buddy, my sister from another mister,” Brian Hawley, her fellow co-executive producer on Family Feud, wrote. “She could be feisty, strong-willed and oh-so-anal, but she had a fun, raunchy sense of humor, and there was nothing better than hearing her laugh.”

Born in Mineola, New York, on July 8, 1955, Bjorklund graduated from Dartmouth College in 1977 and began her career at game show giant Goodson-Todman Productions before starting on Family Feud in 1982.

Family Feud is staying on the air in syndication. The game show, hosted by Steve Harvey, will remain on television through at least the 2025-26 season. This renewal will take the series to its 50th anniversary year.

Created by Mark Goodson, the Family Feud game show premiered in 1976 with Richard Dawson as host on ABC in primetime and in first-run syndication. The show ended in 1985 and was revived in 1988 with Ray Combs hosting. That version ended in 1995 (Dawson returned for the final year). A new syndicated iteration debuted in 1999 and the hosts have included Louie Anderson, Richard Karn, John O'Hurley, and, since 2010, Harvey.

Whitney Cummings will soon have ties to legendary comedian Rodney Dangerfield.

The stand-up, writer, producer, director and podcast host has been selected to receive the Rodney Respect Award at the the Los Angeles City College Foundation Gala on Oct. 27. Per Lacc, the honor “is bestowed upon individuals whose creativity has left a unique mark on the history of comedy.” Prior recipients include Jim Carrey, Chelsea Handler, Tim Allen, Brad Garrett, Kelsey Grammer, Jay Leno, Jon Lovitz, Louie Anderson, Bob Saget, Chuck Lorre and others.

The conservator for “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” actress Edie McClurg was granted a restraining order against an alleged abuser on Tuesday, according to documents obtained by TheWrap.

The conservatorship was set up in 2019 and is run by “Life in Pieces” actress Angelique Cabral, whose mother is McClurg’s cousin.

The documents state that Cabral is “highly concerned” about a man named Michael Ramos, who has been living with the 78-year-old character actress and previously attempted to marry her. According to the documents, he sexually assaulted one of McClurg’s caregivers, and that woman fears he might also be assaulting McClurg.

According to the filing, Ramos “finagled” his way into McClurg’s home and attempted to take her out of state to marry her, even though he knew she “lacked capacity” to consent to a marriage.

Liz Sheridan, the veteran actress best known for playing Jerry Seinfeld’s mother on Seinfeld and also recurred on Alf and appeared in several Broadway shows, died today in New York City. She was 93.

Her longtime friend and rep Amanda Hendon told Deadline that Sheridan died overnight in her sleep of natural causes.

Sheridan already was a veteran TV and film actress when she was cast as the grumpy neighbor Raquel Ochmonek on NBC’s Alf, appearing in about three dozen episodes from 1986-90. Soon after that, she landed the role of Helen Seinfeld, the adoring, protective and occasionally bemused mother of Jerry. She appeared in about 20 episodes ranging from “The Stakeout” early in Season 2 to the 1998 finale.

Comedians and other Hollywood talent are paying tribute on social media to Gilbert Gottfried. The comedian’s family announced April 12 that he had died at age 67 following a long illness. Gottfried was known for his iconic shrill voice and beloved for his crude comedic style. His most famous screen role was voicing the parrot Iago in Disney’s “Aladdin.”

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will return to its normal two-hour live format on TNT and TBS. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute. The 2021 segment saluted 55 people because they had responsibility for 14 months instead of 12.

Among that group will certainly be previous SAG president Ed Asner, who was also a life achievement award recipient. That honorary award was also presented to Sidney Poitier and Betty White, who both died this past year.

Jonathan Krisel was executive producer of “Baskets,” starring Louie Anderson, which aired on FX from 2016-19. Anderson, who died at age 68 on Jan. 21, won an Emmy for his performance as Christine on the show, which also starred Zach Galifianakis.

Louie bought the entire crew Arby’s one night. He had already filmed his scenes for the day, but he wanted to spoil us. He even brought the manager from the Arby’s to help pass out all the food. He was just like that.

He knew everyone on the crew so well. When we’d be setting up a shot and the cinematographer and I would be discussing if we wanted the shot “dirty” — meaning in a close-up you see a piece of the off-camera actor — if Louie heard that, he’d immediately start singing “Ridin’ Dirty” by Nelly. It was like clockwork, and it was always extremely loud and somehow always funny.

Carl Kurlander, who went from being director Joel Schumacher’s assistant to writing St. Elmo’s fire with him, wrote a look back on that film for Deadline as well as a tribute when the director passed away., Kurlander today shares memories about Louie Anderson, the comic and actor who died last Friday in Las Vegas at age 68. Kurlander co-authored The F Word: How to Survive Your Family with Louie Anderson and was a consultant on his The Louie Show on CBS. His other credits include St Elmo’s Fire, he has been a senior lecturer at the U of Pittsburgh and producer of Chasing Covid and other titles. Here he discusses the empathy Anderson showed to most everyone around him, and many career breaks he provided, actions informed by the slights and hardships he faced in his own life.

Many of us first saw Louie Anderson on screen as a flower delivery man in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” a cameo role that comes late in the 1986 movie. But the first time he made an impression on me was in the late 1980s, when Anderson would fill in for Joan Rivers on her short-lived Fox talker “The Late Show.”

He was funny, he was engaging and brought a real personality and humanity when he would show up to guest host. Years later, I asked him about that experience.

“When I came to Los Angeles, I had three goals: Do the ‘Tonight Show,’ get my name on the Comedy Store, and to host my own talk show,” Anderson told me in 2018. “Really, in the first few years I was able to do all those things. And I loved them all [although] I realized that I did not want to be a talk show host.

Sad news out of the TV world this Friday morning.

Louie Anderson, the award-winning stand-up comedian, actor, and host, died on Friday.

He was 68 years old.

Anderson was said to be in the hospital undergoing treatment for B-cell lymphoma.

Anderson's rep opened up about the star's medical status last week.

"Iconic comedian Louie Anderson is currently in a Las Vegas hospital being treated for diffuse large B cell lymphoma, a form of cancer," Glenn Schwart told Rolling Stone in an article published earlier this week.

"He is resting comfortably."

Pauly Shore opened up about Anderson's medical status on social media prior to his passing.

After news broke that “Baskets” star Louie Anderson died Friday morning, celebrities took to social media to mourn the loss of the Emmy-winning comedian. Anderson, who started the 1990s cartoon series “Life With Louie” and appeared in “Coming to America” and “Search Party,” was also a Las Vegas comedy staple, with his stand-up show “Louie: Larger Than Life” running from 2003 to 2012.

Louie Anderson, the iconic Emmy-winning comedian, actor and game show host, died Friday in Las Vegas after battling cancer, his publicist confirmed to Variety. He was 68.

A seasoned stand-up with a career spanning over four decades, Anderson broke through as a comedian in 1984 when he performed a set on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” From there, he performed a comedy special on Showtime in 1987, made regular TV appearances on late-night shows and appeared in movies such as “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” in 1986 and “Coming to America” in 1988.

In 1995, Anderson produced, created and starred in the Fox original animated series “Life With Louie.” Like much of Anderson’s stand-up, “Life With Louie” was based heavily on his experiences growing up in Saint Paul, Minn., in a large family of 11 children. The comic voiced a fictionalized version of his eight-year-old self in the show, winning two Daytime Emmys for performer in an animated program.

A constant presence on stage and screen since the mid-1980s, Anderson won the 2016 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Christine Baskets, the mother of the Zach Galifianakis-portrayed Chip and Dale on the FX series. The actor was nominated in the category over three consecutive years starting in 2016 for his Baskets performance. Anderson also won two Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for Fox’s Life with Louie in 1997 and 1998.

“Coming 2 America,” the long-awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy’s 1988 “Coming to America,” was the most-streamed title in the U.S. the week of its premiere, according to new Nielsen data.

The movie, released March 4 on Amazon Prime Video, drew 1.413 billion minutes of total viewing for the week of March 1-7 among U.S. viewers, per Nielsen’s SVOD Content Ratings estimates. African American viewers accounted for 40% of the film’s audience, according to the media measurement firm.

That put “Coming 2 America” ahead of every other TV show or movie on major streaming subscription services for the period, according to Nielsen — and represents Prime Video’s first No. 1 spot on the rankings.

The next most-viewed title for that week was Netflix original series “Ginny & Georgia” with 1.16 billion minutes over 10 episodes, followed by reruns of “Criminal Minds” on Netflix (929 million minutes) and Disney Plus’ “WandaVision” (924 million minutes). Also notable...
