The “swashbuckling adventure” is a subgenre that became more and more antiquated as the spectacle of action movies evolved. It probably has less of an edge over westerns since the latter can still rely on gunplay, but sword-fighting films have roots in Hollywood since the golden era with movies like Robin Hood, The Three Musketeers and countless Pirate films. It was the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise that brought swashbucklers into a whole new world with modern audiences.
However, 1998 would see the return of a legendary folk hero, both in the context of the story and in the world of cinema, when Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment produced the Martin Campbell film The Mask of Zorro.
The History
Zorro was created in 1919 by Johnston McCulley. And amazingly this property (that’s over a hundred years old) still has influence on a bevy of popular characters that still goes strong today.

Why Did Tom Cruise Turnn Down The Role Of Steven Spielberg’s Zorro? (Photo Credit – Koimoi)
Tom Cruise almost became Zorro, but even he knew it wasn’t the right call. Before Antonio Banderas put on the mask in The Mask of Zorro, Cruise was on Steven Spielberg’s radar for the role. And while Hollywood’s ultimate action star has taken on almost every daredevil gig, this one didn’t make the cut – for a surprisingly bold reason.
Cinematographer Mikael Salomon, who was once attached to direct The Legend of Zorro, revealed the surprising casting consideration while speaking in an interview with Slash Film for the 25th anniversary of The Mask of Zorro. According to Salomon, Spielberg, an executive producer on the film, had Cruise in mind for Don Alejandro de la Vega.

Stephen King‘s short story Autopsy Room Four was first published in the 1997 collection Six Stories – which, fitting for the title, did indeed contain six stories. That book was limited to just 1100 copies, but thankfully King ended up putting all six of the stories into different collections over the years. Autopsy Room Four was also included in the 1997 anthology Robert Bloch’s Psychos before making its way into the 2002 King collection Everything’s Eventual. In 2006, the story was adapted for the screen as an episode of the TNT King mini-series Nightmares and Dreamscapes… and now, Deadline reports that a feature film adaptation is in the works.
King has given the greenlight for the new adaptation, which is being produced by Jon Levin, who was previously an executive producer on Netflix’s King adaptation In the Tall Grass. The film will be written and directed by Ranjeet S. Marwa, whose credits include Ballistic,...

Legendary author Stephen King’s vampire novel Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) has received three direct adaptations over the decades. The first was the 1979 mini-series directed by Tobe Hooper, which had a running time of 183 minutes. A mini-series directed by Mikael Salomon followed in 2004, and that one had a 181 minute running time. So when it was announced that Gary Dauberman was going to write and direct an adaptation that would try to fit the story into a single feature, fans wondered how Dauberman would accomplish that… and how long this single feature would be. Dauberman’s Salem’s Lot was finally released through the Max streaming service last week (you can read our review Here), and the filmmaker has said he whittled the story down to a 113 minute film by focusing on the core group of characters and dropping subplots with side characters. Still, turning Salem’s Lot...

The following reveals major spoilers for Salems Lot, now streaming on Max.
The new version of Salem's Lot arrives on Max to kick off the Halloween season, presenting the third adaptation of Stephen King's famous novel to reach screens. It's proven a difficult job to successfully translate, owing at least partially to the sprawling nature of the book. The previous two adaptations a 1979 miniseries directed by Tobe Hooper and a 2004 version directed by Mikael Salomon both made significant changes to the novel while still staying true to many of its key themes and events.
The new film has to walk a much tighter line, limited to two hours instead of three and making more drastic changes in an effort to encapsulate Stephen King's sometimes sprawling narrative. That means the changes are bigger and more sweeping, though they're all made with the spirit of the book in mind. Below is...

It’s the fall of 1975 when writer Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) returns to his childhood home in rural Maine, hoping the sleepy enclave might offer something in the way of inspiration. His previous books have been derided by critics. His publishers, it seems, are losing patience.
Ben spends most of his days in the library, where his presence and research into the archives becomes the talk of the town. Susan Norton (Makenzie Leigh), a fledgling real estate broker, catches his eye and the two form an easy friendship that eventually morphs into romance. But just as Ben’s settling in and tempering the suspicions of locals, one boy (Cade Woodward) disappears and another (Nicholas Crovetti) dies. It’s easy to wonder if this new guy — quiet, strange, from the big city — might somehow be involved.

Revisiting an iconic work by Stephen King takes guts. It’s especially tough when the property has already been adapted by a fan-favorite director. Yet Salem’s Lot looks to do exactly that, reviving the vampire franchise for the first time in nearly twenty years. This time, the King property gets the feature film treatment, hoping to differentiate itself from the 1979 Tobe Hooper and 2004 Mikael Salomon mini-series events. While this Salem’s Lot looks great, the shorter runtime leaves it sprinting through the exposition. It becomes a problem despite moments of brilliance.
A new Salem’s Lot
A young writer – Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) – returns to Jersulam’s Lot after spending a short time growing up in the small town. The local “haunted” house – The Marsden House – continues to haunt Ben and becomes a slight obsession. While in town, he begins dating Susan Norton (Makenzie Leigh) and becomes friends with local teacher Matt Burke (Bill Camp). However,...

The 1990s were an incredible time for action movies, with many fantastic releases that mainstream audiences have largely forgotten. While cinematic classics like Speed, Terminator 2, and The Matrix franchise were all released during this time, many more hidden gems failed to achieve long-lasting cultural relevance and are ripe for rediscovery by a new generation of action movie lovers. Luckily, the advent of streaming and the widespread availability of movies means these films can finally achieve the attention they rightfully deserve.
There were plenty of underrated 1990s action movies from the decade's biggest stars, as performers like Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, and Keanu Reeves have had several fantastic forgotten films. While many of these movies have built passionate cult followings, the fact that they are not very well known to the average movie viewer is truly a crying shame. Although they may have been badly received by critics at the time of release,...

The 2024 feature film adaptation of Stephen King's second novel 'Salem's Lot will hit Max on October 3, but until then there are plenty of ways for fans to explore the vampire-infested village. It was the setting for the novel and two short stories; two TV miniseries; an oddball '80s movie sequel; and even a radio play co-starring Hellraiser's biggest icon. The author has even hinted that the legacy of the town extends through more books than most people know.
The 1975 novel was adapted for television in 1979 and 2004, and the short story was adapted in 2021. In 1987, cult movie king Larry Cohen directed legendary filmmaker Sam Fuller in a black comedy sequel, and in 1994 the BBC staged a seven-part radio play starring Doug Bradley Hellraiser's original Pinhead as the terrifying Barlow. And King has responded to questions about a 'Salem's Lot sequel with hints about his Dark Tower novels.

“’Salem’s Lot” is finally on its way.
The new adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 novel, considered by many to be one of the author’s very best, was shot in the summer of 2021 (with additional photography a year later). And then it just sat. For a while it was unclear whether Warner Bros. was just going to scrap the movie altogether, as it did with “Batgirl” and “Coyote vs. Acme.” Eventually the movie was shifted to premiere on the company’s streaming platform Max. We now have a date that it’ll debut (October 3) and a brand new trailer. Watch it below.

Much has been said about Stephen King, the prolific author of dozens of novels, screenplays, teleplays, and even a few comic books and a stage musical. However, less has been said about Stephen King: Pop Culture Influencer. While King's name has become about as prestigious as other writers whose works have stood the test of time like Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe, King is one of the few titans of culture who's been alive while his star rose to such great heights, allowing him to enjoy a level of reputation that other artists only reach posthumously. As such, King has parlayed this fame into being a sort of media guru of sorts; while he's not and has never passed himself off as what we know to be an influencer today, he's regularly offered his opinions and suggestions on the art he enjoys almost as an offshoot of the nonfiction he's...

Actress Minnie Driver was the ‘it girl’ of ‘90s Hollywood, as she was touted to be the next big star after her Oscan-nominated performance in Good Will Hunting. While she was expected to hit the levels of stardom of other starlets like Kate Winslet and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Driver has chosen to work on more independent and small-scale productions.
Driver’s last blockbuster film, Hard Rain, was reportedly not a good experience. Apart from being a box office bomb, the filming conditions were reportedly extreme and miserable due to it being set around a natural disaster. To top it off, Driver reportedly fought with the producer over miserable working conditions.

Minnie Driver claims producers for 1998’s Hard Rain told her she couldn’t wear a wetsuit because “they wanted to see my nipples.”
The Good Will Hunting actress said on Mondays’ episode of the I Weigh With Jameela Jamil podcast that she was made to feel like “an idiot” when she pushed back on a costume decision for the disaster action thriller, despite filming in “20 million gallons of water.”

Actors and actresses often come across projects whose filming ends up making them quite uncomfortable and Minnie Driver is no exception. Back in 1998, the actress starred in Mikael Salomon’s heist action-thriller, Hard Rain. While the film didn’t perform well at the box office, bringing in less than $20 million, this was far from what soured Minnie Driver’s memories of the film.

According to Minnie Driver, she was made to go through some serious uncomfortable working situations. Executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have reunited for a third historical mini-series, this time taking to the skies with Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air.” The series follows the members of the 100th Bomb Group, a Boeing B-17 heavy bomber unit that operated in the Air Force during WWII. This isn’t Hanks and Spielberg’s first war-time series, however. They previously executive produced “The Pacific,” which charted the US Marine Corps’ actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Before that, they created “Band of Brothers,” which dramatized the story of the Easy Company of the US Army, who went on a mission in Europe during WWII.

With The Mask of Zorro, Antonio Banderas truly marked himself as a genuine star and sex symbol across the globe. While he earned acclaim for his collaborations with Pedro Almodóvar in Spain and made his presence known in the States with Philadelphia and Interview with the Vampire, The Mask of Zorro was his first leading role to near $100 million at the domestic box office. But the iconic swordsman almost had another man behind the mask: Tom Cruise.
According to The Mask of Zorro‘s original director Mikael Salomon, executive producer Steven Spielberg wanted Tom Cruise to star. “Who else was [in the mix]? Some big — oh yeah, Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise's decision to turn down the lead role in The Mask of Zorro shows his commitment to authenticity and avoiding whitewashing in Hollywood. Cruise's choice not to play the role, which was initially offered to him by producer Steven Spielberg, demonstrates his understanding of the potential backlash and controversy that could arise from casting non-Latino actors in Latin-origin roles. The actor's track record of choosing roles and striving for authenticity in his characters has earned him a reputation for making smart decisions in Hollywood.

Tom Cruise declined the role in The Mask of Zorro because he felt it would be inappropriate for a non-Latino actor to play the character. The film still faced criticism for casting Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who are both White, as Hispanic characters. The incident highlights the ongoing problem of whitewashing in Hollywood and the need for more diversity and accurate casting in films.

Cinematographer Mikael Salomon says he was at one point hired to direct The Mask of Zorro and had considered having Tom Cruise cast as that film's main protagonist.
In a /Film interview, Salomon reveals that 1998's The Mask of Zorro had several A-list actors considered for the lead role before Antonio Banderas took the part. This insider news was well overdue but revealed in time for the film's 25th anniversary, which marks The Mask of Zorro's theatrical release but doesn't account for its lengthy development and production history. Salomon said he was briefly hired in 1993 to direct the film and discovered that Steven Spielberg wanted Tom Cruise as Zorro, which almost happened if the actor didn't decline the offer.

The film gods are a fickle bunch. If the flip of the coin had landed on a different outcome at various points in Hollywood history, the entire landscape of cinema as we know it could be completely changed. In fact, movie star Tom Cruise is something of a cottage industry to himself when it comes to major roles that he could've signed on for, but ended up little more than fascinating notes of trivia -- in our universe, at least. There's the infamous "Iron Man" scenario that could've seen him suit up as Tony Stark instead of Robert Downey, Jr., of course, along with the near-miss of starring in the classic "Shawshank Redemption." But there's one other little-known factoid that completes this little trilogy of alternate-history Cruise projects: one where he could've been cast as the lead of "The Mask of Zorro," incredibly enough.

Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers of the Flower Moon” opens with a flurry of images and incidents that quickly establish the world and era of the film. Moving from an Osage pipe ceremony to a slow-motion shot of characters dancing in gushing oil and then a newsreel recreation that acclimates the viewer to the historical context, Scorsese and co-screenwriter Eric Roth create one of the most immediately involving openings in recent movies. Yet according to Scorsese, a completely different prologue was initially planned.
“Eric and I originally had the idea that we should do the Oklahoma land rush,” Scorsese told IndieWire. “He had written a five- or seven-page description with beautiful vignettes, and I was going to shoot it all in one take. We had it all worked out that it would take another month with a separate unit.” Shooting the sprawling action sequence would have allowed Scorsese to pay tribute...

It's been 22 years since "Band of Brothers" captivated television audiences with its gripping 10-episode tale of a United States paratrooper company's daring, civilization-saving exploits in the European Theater of World War II. And according to its placement on Netflix's top charts, it is as relevant and watchable as ever.
Whether the streamer's subscribers are revisiting the classic miniseries or discovering it for the first time, it's encouraging to know that people are still moved by the heroism of the young soldiers who put their lives on the line to turn back Adolf Hitler's genocidal grab for world domination -- especially as we watch the American Republican party and the country's law enforcement get overrun by the types of white supremacists who contributed to the rise of the Third Reich. We live in perilous times, so it's important to remember how many brave individuals fought and died to eliminate...

Last year it was revealed that after teaming up to bring nightmares to life in The Conjuring cinematic universe, James Wan and Gary Dauberman are looking to bring one of Stephen King's classic stories to the big screen with a film adaptation of ’Salem's Lot, with Wan producing and Dauberman executive producing and writing the screenplay. Nearly one year later, it's now been reported that Dauberman will also direct the latest adaptation of King's beloved 1975 book.
The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who report that Dauberman "has closed a deal to direct the feature thriller" for New Line Cinema. This will mark Dauberman's second movie as director, as he made his directorial debut with last year's Annabelle Comes Home.
According to THR, Roy Lee and Mark Wolper will produce the new 'Salem's Lot adaptation alongside Wan. A release date has yet to be announced.

A director has been announced for New Line’s upcoming film version of Stephen King’s classic novel, ‘Salem’s Lot, and it seems the search did not have to go too far or wide: Gary Dauberman, who’s already writing the screenplay, will now get behind the camera as well for the James Wan-produced project, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Dauberman made his directorial debut last year on Annabelle Comes Home, easily the best of the three Annabelle movies and a genuinely creepy exercise in its own right. Dauberman has also written the Annabelle trilogy, as well as The Nun, and also co-wrote the King-based films It and It: Chapter 2 with director Andy Muschietti, all for Warner Bros. Pictures’ New Line division.

After teaming up several times to bring nightmares to life in The Conjuring cinematic universe, James Wan and Gary Dauberman are now looking to bring one of Stephen King's classic stories to the big screen.

Carsten Jensen’s bestselling historical saga “We, the Drowned” is being adapted for TV, and prolific director and cinematographer Mikael Salomon (“Band of Brothers”) is on board. Salomon will direct the seafaring epic, which will be produced in English by Denmark’s Marlowfilm Productions.
Banijay Rights has snagged international rights to the series and will hold early-stage talks with buyers at Mipcom in Cannes. The TV project is in late-stage development at Copenhagen-based Marlowfilm.
The multi-generational story follows the people of the Danish seaport of Marstal. Starting in the mid-19th century, it follows those who set to sea and those they left behind. Danish author and columnist Jensen’s book was first published in 2006 to widespread acclaim.

At this point, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ governors election looks more like a round-up than a race; more than 180 members have declared their interest in filling 17 contested spots on the 54-member Board of Governors.
Voting in the run-off round starts on Monday and ends May 18. That will narrow the present field to a maximum of four nominees per branch in the final round, which follows.
For now, there are on average about 11 candidates in the running for each slot. In the casting directors and costume design branches, only three members have declared for each slot. But not so in the actors branch, where 17 members — including Brie Larson, Jacki Weaver and Meg Ryan — are vying for the spot being vacated by termed-out Tom Hanks; or the producers, executives, and public relations branches, all of which have a bumper crop of candidates. Marvin Levy, currently a governor in the public relations branch,...

This fall, Lifetime will take an uncharacteristic trip into horror lit with Big Driver, an adaptation of Stephen King’s same-named short story from his 2010 collection Full Dark, No Stars. Maria Bello stars in the grim and brutal pic, about an author who is brutally raped and assaulted by a truck driver, only to survive and return seeking vengeance.
The project is an unusual one for Lifetime, though the network has been branching out in recent years with increasingly dramatic original series like Witches of East End and The Lottery. Big Driver is also, like many of Lifetime’s programs, a tale of female empowerment led by a particularly steely protagonist.
Now, the suitably dark first trailer for the movie, which also stars Olympia Dukakis, Joan Gett, Ann Dowd and Will Harris, has arrived online. Check it out below, along with the official synopsis for the adaptation.

Not everything goes to plan in this week's eventful episode of Falling Skies. Here's Ron's review...
Review
This review contains spoilers.
4.3 Exodus
It's very rare that an episode of Falling Skies shows a lot of focus towards one pivotal event. This is a show that goes well out of its way to make sure that every possible plot thread gets noted every week, and Exodus is no exception. However, it's also a much more focused episode of television than was broadcast last week. We had check-ins with Matt and Anne and Lexi's cult, but most of the attention was put onto the most important piece of action, the escape from the Espheni ghetto.
Given the build-up to Tom's big escape plan, it's fitting that it actually comes off in the least Falling Skies way possible. Traditionally, this is a show where everything seems to go right for our heroes,...

Add Big Driver, a short story in Stephen King’s 2010 collection Full Dark, No Stars, to the huge list of works by the living literary legend that are in the midst of being adapted to the screen. Lifetime just green-lit a television movie based on the story and has set A History of Violence actress Maria Bello to star.
Big Driver will center on a successful mystery novelist (Bello) who takes an ostensible shortcut on her way home from an engagement at a Chicopee, Massachusetts, library and falls into a trap set by a sinister trucker, who proceeds to brutally rape her and leave her for dead. After recovering from her injuries, the novelist uses the detective skills she picked up from writing mystery novels to track down and take revenge on the trucker and his accomplices.
