Attila Szalay was born in Budapest, Hungary and immigrated with his parents to Canada, where his passion for filmmaking began. Between 1990 and 1996, he worked on over 50 film projects as an A-Camera operator. Szalay became a Director of Photography in the mid-1990s and has since earned CSC nominations for for the pilot of "Peacemakers" and two episodes of "Smallville". He won the 2009 Leo Award and the 2010 CSC Award for Best Cinematography on the mini-series "Iron Road". In 2011 he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for the mini-series "Pillars of the Earth". In 2013, Szalay was invited by his peers to join the American Society of Cinematographers. In 2024 he was nominated for a CSC award for Cinematography on Ozark. In addition to his work as a Director of Photography, he is a member of the DGA and actively engages in television directing.
