Modern horror icons James Wan and Leigh Whannell have brought us multiple blockbuster franchises over the years, including Saw and Insidious. Insidious: The Red Door was meant to be the final film in the series, but Sony changed its mind after the film's financial success. A sixth Insidious movie is now in the works and planned for a 2025 release date. But that's not all.

Blumhouse, Gea Live, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and RoadCo Entertainment are working in tandem to bring an immersive Insidious experience to 80+ cities across North America next year. The "Insidious" franchise shows no signs of stopping. There's both a spin-off movie and a new sequel on the way, and the most recent entry, "The Red Door," was a big hit in 2023. We've just learned that horror icons Barbara Crampton and Lin Shaye (Insidious franchise) will be starring together in an upcoming horror film titled The Possession at Gladstone Manor. The Possession at Gladstone Manor comes from Umbrelic Entertainment, the same company that brought us the supernatural thriller film Monstrous starring Christina Ricci. K. Asher Levin, known for helming the movies Dig and Slayers, signed on to direct. He also co-wrote the film's screenplay with Danny Matier from a story by Addam Bramich.

Katz, Zambeck, Jordon Rioux, and Chris Knitter are producers of the horror flick, while Sean Krajeski, Ronnie Exley, Theresa Wayman, Jeremy Ross, and Anish Gupta are executive producers. Wayman is also composing the score.

Insidious might have had the shortest film retirement ever. Sony has set a release date for a sixth film in the franchise, August 29, 2025.

The news comes a little over a year after Blumhouse founder Jason Blum told Discussing Film that the fifth movie, Insidious: The Red Door, would be the last one "for a while." Adding that the franchise would go into a "very long rest," and potentially be revisited in ten years or so.

But to be fair to Blum, he did that interview before The Red Door made a killing at the box office, proving there is still fanfare for the popular horror franchise.

The Red Door, which marked star Patrick Wilson's directorial debut, outgrossed all four previous Insidious movies and became one of the highest-grossing horror movies of 2023, raking in over $189 million worldwide.

Sony did not reveal any plans for the sixth Insidious film, just the release date.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. But a horror movie prequel has the tougher needle to thread in ensuring all of its pieces nestle neatly within the previously established framework without contradicting any details.

It may seem hard to believe, but the Insidious franchise is getting long in the tooth! The first Insidious movie was released all the way back in 2010, kickstarting an unlikely string of movies under the watchful eye of Saw horror duo Leigh Whannell and James Wan.

At first, the franchise focused on the Lambert family, whose move to a new home coincided with their son Dalton falling into a mysterious coma. They soon found out that it wasn’t their home that was haunted, but their family. Thanks to the Lamberts’ ability to astral project their consciousnesses, they can access “The Further”, a purgatory dimension where they’re at risk of attracting restless spirits, demonic and otherwise.

Another spooky season has come and very nearly gone. The leaves are changing colors, the days are getting shorter (and colder), and it's time to start gearing up for the annual end-of-year rush of awards players. Not that that's any reason to stop the scary times from going. If you're like me, you'll probably spend the first part of November just catching up on all the spine-chilling entertainment you had intended to get to in October (there's just too darn much to cram into a single month -- I only barely got started on the new "Goosebumps" series). Of course, if you'd prefer to get a head-start on the winter holidays, you could instead tune in to Max, which will be adding plenty of beloved festive titles over the next few weeks, and much more.

Here are our top picks for November, along with everything else that's coming to the streamer that month.

In the world of film, you will have icons that appear with a few manufactured into something better than they are. The Net and the Hollywood star system of the past do that today with some questionable ability and content on both sides of the camera being hailed as something special. The icons of the horror genre rise to the top like Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing. Their names are often above titles of films even reduced to the use of the surname as in Karloff and Lugosi without losing box office appeal. Entering this realm is the feature documentary of actor Robert Englund simply called Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story.

I honestly was not a huge Freddy fan towards the end of the A Nightmare On Elm Street series of films because for me the stories became set pieces for effects.

It edged the worldwide cume of Blumhouse’s own M3GAN ($180.8M) which is now the No. 2 horror title of 2023 to date. The current Red Door frame was worth $2.5M from 59 overseas markets for an international cume of $101.8M. Through Sunday, the Insidious franchise has earned over $735M worldwide.

After five years, “Insidious” is taking fans to the Further once more with “Insidious: The Red Door.” The latest installment is now available on Digital, which means now is the perfect time to catch up on the creepy franchise (or experience it for the first time). Beginning with “Insidious” in 2010, the horror films center around a family who finds themselves haunted by demons from another realm, along with the people who try to help them.

Created by horror veteran Leigh Whannell (who also created the “Saw” franchise along with James Wan), each installment of the “Insidious” takes viewers deeper into the Further, a nightmarish dimension populated by tortured spirits and ruled over by a malevolent demon. “The Red Door” will be the fifth installment in the franchise, and will once again focus on the Lambert family, with Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Ty Simpkins all reprising their roles from the first two films.
