Four original Ally McBeal cast members, star Calista Flockhart as well as Greg Germann, Peter MacNicol and Gil Bellows, reunited Monday night during the Emmy broadcast on Fox more than 26 years after the debut of the legal dramedy, which aired on the network for five seasons, from September 1997 to May 2002.
The bit started with Flockhart washing her hands in a replica of the show’s famous unisex bathroom.
“I knew I drank too much water; I had to take my Spanx off, I had to put my dress back on,” Flockhart is heard “thinking” in a voiceover before she takes a look in the mirror and tells herself, “Girl, you look good.”
That is when there is a series of three toilet flushes, each followed by an Ally McBeal cast member, MacNicol, Bellows and Germann, coming out of a bathroom stall.

No need to send out a search party for the “Searchin’ My Soul” singer. It’s true that Vonda Shepard has kept a low profile of late, not just during the pandemic but for a few years before it, not having released an album of new material since 2015’s “Rookie.” But she’s back with her 13th studio album, “Red Light, Green Light,” titled in part for the stop-and-go feelings a lot of us might have experienced during the past two and a half years. For Shepard at least, who has touring dates now lined up on the east coast and in Europe to follow the new release, all systems are go, again.
For the still-curious who never really checked out Shepard’s discography outside of the “Ally McBeal” music, which she produced as well as sang (four of her 13 studio releases are “McBeal” soundtracks), the new album is a...

A new iteration of the beloved TV show “Ally McBeal” is said to be in the works.
The new series will be a sequel rather than a reboot and will focus on a young Black woman who joins the law firm from the original “Ally McBeal” after she graduates from law school, according to Deadline. The lead character will reportedly be the daughter of McBeal’s one-time roommate, D.A. roommate Renée Raddick (Lisa Nicole Carson).
As for Ally McBeal herself, Calista Flockhart, her involvement in the project is currently unclear. Per Deadline, “Flockhart has been approached to reprise her title role from the original in some capacity and to executive-produce the followup.” However, the outlet added that “a decision on her potential involvement likely won’t be made until a script has been written.”
This isn’t the first time talks of Flockhart returning to TV as McBeal have made headlines.

ABC might take viewers back to the world of Ally McBeal.
Almost 18 months after it was first reported that a revival of sorts could be in the works, Deadline revealed that a sequel series is in development.
According to the outlet, the project would be written and executive produced by Karin Gist, and would follow a young Black woman who joins the law firm from the original Fox drama.
"The young woman is believed to be the daughter of Ally McBeal’s (Flockhart) D.A. roommate Renée Raddick, who was played by Lisa Nicole Carson on the mothership series," Deadline teases.
Calista Flockhart, who headlined the original series, has reportedly been approached to appear and executive produce.
David E. Kelly, who created and executive produced the original series is said to have given his blessing for the new project.
Kelley previously opened up about the prospect of a revival or reboot.

‘Ally McBeal’ Sequel With New Lead In Works At ABC From Karin Gist; Calista Flockhart Eyed To Return
Exclusive: Exactly two decades since David E. Kelley’s Ally McBeal ended its five-season run on Fox, the Emmy-winning legal dramedy starring Calista Flockhart is plotting a comeback with a sequel series, which is in early development at ABC, I have learned.
Written and executive produced by Karin Gist (Mike), I hear the new show will follow a young Black woman who joins the law firm from the original series (or its current incarnation) straight out of law school. The young woman is believed to be the daughter of Ally McBeal’s (Flockhart) D.A. roommate Renée Raddick, who was played by Lisa Nicole Carson on the mothership series.
I hear Flockhart has been approached to reprise her title role from the original in some capacity and to executive produce the follow-up. A decision on her potential involvement likely won’t be made until a script has been written.

One of the most beloved legal dramas could be gearing up for a triumphant return.
TV Line is reporting that a limited series revival of Ally McBeal is officially in development.
Calista Flockhart, who played the titular lawyer on the original series, is being eyed for a comeback.
If they seriously plan on calling the series Ally McBeal, then they really need to think about locking Flockhart in before pressing on with the project.
Could you imagine Ally McBeal without Flockhart playing the snarky lawyer? It wouldn't land well.
Ally McBeal was a big series for Fox when it kicked off in 1997. It ultimately lasted until 2002, with the network swinging the axe after five brilliant seasons.
There was a considerable amount of closure, however, which is unusual when you consider the fact that the series was canceled.
Many fans of the show figured the cancellation was due to some ratings erosion in its fifth season,...

Richmond Shepard, one of America’s foremost practitioners and proponents of the art of mime, died in Manhattan July 2 at age 90.
Shepard’s family announced his passing with an unusual request: “In lieu of flowers, Richmond has requested a moment of noise.”
Although he was most famous as a mime — and received fresh notoriety three years ago when he was featured in an online New Yorker video, “The World’s Oldest Mime” — Shepard was also a well-known personality in the bicoastal theater communities as a director, critic and theater operator, with small stages that bore his name in both L.A. and New York.
Shepard was the author of “Mime: The Technique of Silence,” a 1970 book considered an essential text for anyone looking to take up the craft. His early television work included appearances on “The Today Show” and talk shows with Merv Griffin, Steve Allen and Dinah Shore. His...

Remember that infectious Ally McBeal theme song? It's been more than 10 years since the cult '90s hit ended its five-season run, and now the creative force behind the catchy opening tune "Searchin' My Soul" - Vonda Shepard - is ready to get back in the spotlight. Shepard - who also appeared as the bar singer in the series - has continued to produce music and recently turned to Kickstarter to help fund her latest work. "After a long time of just hanging back, and still playing shows, and recording and writing, I decided to just dive in and try [Kickstarter]," Shepard tells People.

House of Lies makes its DVD debut this week. The darkly humorous series details the bawdy adventures of management consultant, and horrible-person extraordinaire, Marty Kaan and his crack team of misfits as they banter, flirt and offend their way through the boardrooms of America.
The release is the perfect opportunity for Golden Globe viewers to see the show that won Don Cheadle his 2013 best actor award and for fans of Californication to judge its most enthusiastic imitator.
Cheadle plays Marty, the fast-talking con-man who uses his smarts and skill for misdirection to land the big fish CEOs his firm feasts upon and to evade the women lingering in his revolving bedroom door. Kristen Bell is Ivy League grad Jeannie, Marty’s right hand woman and partner in corporate crime. The duo, together with sidekicks Doug and Clyde, criss-cross the domestic skies from Monday to Thursday delivering disquiet and insecurity to the companies who engage them.

"Glee" has a dance coming up for "Sadie Hawkins," airing on Thursday (Jan. 24). And where there's a dance, there's a lot of music. You can listen to all of the songs from the episode right here.
There are indeed a lot of songs being covered by the "Glee" kids as they get ready for a girls-ask-guys dance. Check them all out below.
First up is Vonda Shepard's "Tell Him," sung on "Glee" by Brittany (Heather Morris) and Marley (Melissa Benoist):
Based on what we know, these two ladies will be asking Sam (Chord Overstreet) and Jake (Jacob Artist), respectively.
Next up is Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), singing "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from "Jesus Christ Superstar."
Considering that this episode features Tina's inexplicable and baseless crush on Blaine (Darren Criss), this is a very appropriate song choice. Also -- and this is huge -- Tina Got A Solo!

New York -- Lauren Alaina (uh-lay'-nuh) is canceling her shows this weekend because of vocal issues.
Alaina said in a statement Thursday that her doctor is putting her on "vocal rest." She was set to open for country duo Sugarland on Friday in Cincinnati, Ohio, and on Saturday in Clarkston, Mich. The statement provided no other specifics about the condition of her voice.
Alaina was the runner-up on "American Idol" last year. For the show's finale, she blew out one of her vocal cords during rehearsals.
The 17-year-old said she is "sad" to miss the shows this weekend and is sorry to disappoint her fans. She said she would make it up to them and would be "back soon."
Live Nation said singer Vonda Shepard will fill in for Alaina.

What more is there to say, fellow Voice voyeurs? We've cartwheeled through what seems like 16,930 weeks of brackets, faceoffs, and duets, and now we're down to the final four combatants in the big, red-chaired conclusion of The Voice. I suggest we celebrate by donning our most ironic t-shirts (Hell, I'll wear a glittery "Team Xtina" baby tee too, Adam! Particularly if we're wearing it at the same time!) and correctly the ranking last night's performances. As usual, we'll start low and work our way to #1. Will the winner of The Voice be justified? Not if the sepia-toned catalog of Josh Groban has anything to do with it!
4. Chris Mann: "The Voice Within," "You Raise Me Up," "The Prayer" (with Christina Aguilera)
Would you hate me if I revealed a soupcon of conscience?...

Last night, the doors of Harry’s Law and Fine Shoes shut for the season. For those who missed it, Adam and Rachael finally made out and Josh got nearly nekked in public, again. And Jenna said this: “You were embarrassed of a public display of affection for me? Is it because I’m super white?” (Since the actress’s last name is Snow, I find this to be particularly poignant.)
A few weeks ago, EW’s Ken Tucker wrote a piece inquiring whether Harry’s Law is the worst David E. Kelley show ever. As last night’s season finale proved yet again,...

Ah, short skirts, unisex bathrooms, dancing babies, and killing feminism. The cast of Ally McBeal all got together to reminisce about the show that tackled all that (often through song-and-dance numbers) in the first of two group interviews on this morning's Good Morning America to celebrate the long-awaited release of the beloved hit on DVD. Calista Flockhart and company didn't reveal much of any consequence, except that they've all aged rather gently in the past 12 years since the show's debut and that Ally was struggling with balancing career and baby-making urges, blah blah. ("I think it was her biological clock,...

It's always interesting when you've been hearing about a series for years and then finally sit down to watch it. All the little pieces and pop references of Ally McBeal are starting to come together, like Fishisms, The Biscuit, dancing babies and Vonda Shepard. I have seen the light. Well, at least season one of the light.
I mentioned in my preview last week that Ally McBeal seems like a mix of The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd and My World and Welcome To It. Having reached the end of season one, I still feel that way, with maybe a little Buffy the Vampire Slayer thrown in (hey, don't throw things at me, Ally looks like Buffy).
Molly Dodd because Ally is funny, desperate, strong and cute. My World because of all her fantasies, though not always in cartoon form as was the case with John Monroe / James Thurber.

Downey Jr. Is Busy Writing A Musical
Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr. is expanding his theatrical repertoire - by writing a stage musical.
The star, who lost out on a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award on Sunday, has revealed he has been working on the project for a number of years, and is tirelessly trying to get it finished.
Downey Jr says, "I'm a little busy right now. Every two years or so I'm saying that I am going to do a big musical; I'm just tired of saying that I am going to do stuff that sounds cool. If I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it."
And he insists he isn't just trying to cash in on his fame and recent career resurgence - because he has always considered himself to be a musician.
The Iron Man star adds, "It's always lame when somebody gets really famous and they say they're going to be a singer. I'm like, 'You've already won the lottery, so take it easy, moron!' But I'm also a composer and I sing what I write."
Downey, Jr has already tasted a little musical success - his 2004 album The Futurist was well received and he also recorded a Christmas album with Vonda Shepard.
