Nobody was surprised (probably) when the massive, star-studded episode of "Saturday Night Live" celebrating the show's 50th anniversary mostly leaned on old standby sketches and concepts. There were some exceptions — including a perfect new Digital Short about how everybody who's ever worked at "SNL" has both anxiety and Ibs — but it's ultimately not shocking that the episode featured yet another musical ode to New York City's most disgusting aspects centered around John Mulaney.
From the man who brought you "Diner Lobster," "Airport Sushi," and "Port Authority Duane Reade," among others, we got "New York 50th Musical," and it's safe to say that Oscar nominee Adam Driver would only don a hot dog costume for something this great. It wouldn’t be a Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary celebration without a John Mulaney musical sketch.
Once again joined by Pete Davidson, Sunday night’s iteration had some subtle political undertones as it took viewers on a journey through New York City’s own history over the past five decades.
The sketch began with Mulaney selling hot dogs and heroin in 1973 Times Square, when he’s approached by Davidson and David Spade as two transplants with “dreams of making it big” in the city.
Mulaney’s hot dog salesman is taken aback, explaining that “New York is dying. It’s a bankrupt hellhole.”
But regardless, the men plan to persevere. Cue Adam Driver and Maya Rudolph as said hot dog and heroin, respectively, to kick off the musical numbers, which are meant to show the two newcomers “what New York is all about.”

The title for the weirdest sketch of the “SNL50” special may have just been claimed by John Mulaney’s latest and most star-studded musical mashup to date.
The former “Saturday Night Live” writer returned, following his appearance during the “SNL50” monologue, in a sketch that begins in 1975 New York with him selling “hot dogs and heroin” to two out-of-town newbies (Pete Davidson and David Spade as two guys who are definitely the same age). When the newcomers ignore his warnings about the city, Mulaney leads them on a mind-boggling musical journey into New York’s past and future.
The sketch, yet another bold follow-up to Mulaney’s viral “Diner Lobster” from 2018, remixes songs from “The Lion King,” “Les Misérables” and “Hamilton,” and it features guest appearances from, among others, Kate McKinnon as Rudy Giuliani, Adam Driver as a singing hot dog, Kristen Wiig as a green M&m, Scarlett Johansson as...

John Mulaney took the “Saturday Night Live” 50th anniversary special on a five-decade journey through the ups and downs of the show’s New York City home base. Starting with the 1975 birth of the series, Mulaney’s star-studded medley began with convincing former cast members Pete Davidson and David Spade that the grimy 1970s was still a glorious time to live in New York.
From there, it was a decade-by-decade look at the city, with Adam Driver dressed as a hot dog, Kate McKinnon showing up as a disgraced former mayor Rudy Giuliani and Scarlett Johansson dressed as Audrey from “Little Shop of Horrors,” joking about real-life husband Colin Jost. Also, Nathan Lane sang an ode to cocaine to the tune of “The Lion King’s” “Hakuna Matata” — a song he sang for the film as Timon.
Other guest spots included one-time “SNL” musical directors Paul Schaffer and G.E. Smith,...

Saturday Night Live celebrates 50 years on the air in 2025. It also means that creator Lorne Michaels has spent half a century amassing an eye-popping net worth.
SNL's anniversary celebration culminates with a three-hour primetime special on February 16. Michaels will be joined by A-list celebrities, music legends, and countless cast members he helped discover and propel to the top of the comedy world.
Along the way, Michaels has made quite the fortune for himself through SNL and his production company. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Michaels net worth is an estimated $500 million in 2025. To put that in context, that is much higher than Robert Downey Jr.'s estimated $300 million net worth.
Of course, creating and producing Saturday Night Live is responsible for a large part of Michaels' lifetime earnings. But the 80-year-old has also created a media empire that extends beyond the halls of Studio 8H.
Film and television productions have increased Michaels' net worth.

It’s rumored that “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels hates it when the show’s sketch comedians break character on air. Fortunately, that hasn’t stopped it from happening countless times over the NBC series’ 50-year history. Everyone from Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig to Kate McKinnon and even Will Ferrell have all stumbled into their own moments of out-of-character laughter.
In honor of “SNL’s” 50th anniversary special this Sunday, here are 10 of the best times that the show’s cast couldn’t keep it together.
Pete Davidson in “Uncle Ben”
The funniest moment of “Uncle Ben,” a 2020 sketch about a group of Black brand figures like Aunt Jemima (Maya Rudolph) being fired after being deemed culturally insensitive, is born out of a seemingly unscripted moment. Having already cracked up himself, Dave Chappelle decided to turn his sights on cast member Pete Davidson, who appears in “Uncle Ben” as Count Chocula.

It’s 1983, and Ke Huy Quan had just immigrated to the United States. “I barely speak English. I was busy being a kid, you know, trying to acclimate into my new life,” he told David Spade and Dana Carvey this week on the Fly on the Wall podcast. “I was living in Chinatown, Los Angeles, at that time. It was just a very small Chinese community. And then one day, a casting director and his associate came to my elementary school.”
That was a hell of a day. The casting director was trying to find a kid actor for a little independent movie called Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Why didn’t Steven Spielberg hold auditions for child actors? Who knows? But the casting director was looking for kids in a school gymnasium just the same. Kwan was given lines to read, but “I can barely understand any of it.

The list of Saturday Night Live’s all-time greatest cast members doesn’t exactly match up with the roster of comedians who’ve appeared in the most episodes. More than half of the 10 longest-tenured SNL comics — Kenan Thompson, Colin Jost, Michael Che, Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong and Aidy Bryant all lasted double-digit seasons — appeared in the 2020s.
This is new. This is weird. Why don’t cast members want to leave the show anymore?
Chevy Chase couldn’t wait to go. After one year of SNL success, he was hungry to try his hand at the movies. Bill Murray, John Belushi and Eddie Murphy jumped ship after four seasons. No one wanted Tina Fey to leave, say James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales in their book Live From New York, “but as the saying goes, It Was Time.”
Will it ever be time for Thompson, now hanging out for 22 seasons and counting?...

We’re celebrating 50 years of “Saturday Night Live“! All this week, we’re digging into the late-night comedy institution with new stories, including lists, essays, interviews, and more.
It’s certainly a familiar scene by now, one we’ve all become quite accustom to over the last half century: There’s Lorne Michaels, the famed producer of a televised sketch comedy show airing on NBC. There’s a cast of ever-changing talented performers. At this particular point in time, Jim Downey is the head writer. Al Franken, Tom Davis, Jack Handey, and Alan Zweibel are all on the writing staff. There’s a live audience. There’s a musical guest. There’s the familiar parody newscast. On this particular night, Steve Martin is a guest, as he often is to this very day. Watching a clip on YouTube from this particular night from the mid-’80s, Steve Martin opens the...

Howard Stern has built a reputation for getting celebrities to share secrets they often regret revealing. From shocking confessions to deeply personal admissions, The Howard Stern Show is known for getting stars to drop their guard in ways that other interviewers can’t quite pull off. The reason for this is the way Stern creates an environment where guests feel safe and comfortable enough to open up.

While this weekend’s SNL 50: The Anniversary Special has been scheduled for a while now, it wasn’t until very recently that we started to learn exactly which big-name guests would actually be performing.
Last week, NBC announced that the special would feature celebrity laugh riots Steve Martin, John Mulaney and Kim Kardashian. Horror fans, prepare yourselves—”Don’t Move” (2024) is now streaming on Netflix, and it’s one of the most intense survival horror films I’ve seen in a while. If you love edge-of-your-seat tension, terrifying villains, and the kind of horror that lingers in your mind long after the credits roll, this is a must-watch.
What Is “Don’t Move” (2024) About?
Directed by Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, Don’t Move stars Kelsey Asbille (Yellowstone), Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story), and David Spade in a chilling departure from his usual comedic roles.
The premise is terrifyingly simple yet utterly gripping:
A ruthless serial killer injects a grieving woman with a paralytic agent. She has only minutes before her body completely shuts down. Her only chance at survival? Running, hiding, and fighting back—before she can’t move at all.
It’s a nightmare scenario that plays out in real time, making every second feel like an eternity.

Don’t tell that nasty penguin, but Billy Madison is turning 30 today. It’s the movie that taught America that peeing your pants is cool, that shampoo and conditioner have been locked in a battle for the ages and that Adam Sandler was going to be one of the funniest movie stars of all time.
While Billy Madison was written by Sandler and his longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy, it was directed by Tamra Davis, who had previously directed Chris Rock’s CB4 and would go on to direct Half Baked.
Joining me for a Zoom call recently to mark the movie’s 30th anniversary, Davis was happy to recall her time working on Billy Madison, including sharing funny stories about Chris Farley stripping, why Sandler was convinced pelting kids with a dodgeball was comedy gold and how she still doesn’t understand what that penguin was doing there.

Saturday Night
While not officially affiliated with Saturday Night Live, the movie Saturday Night deserves a spot in this guide. The movie takes a dramatized look at what Lorne Michaels had to do to get the first episode on the air in 1975.

The official Saturday Night Live YouTube channel is stocked with hundreds of sketches from the show’s five decades of comedy but only one has passed the magic 100-million view mark. Matt Foley screaming at David Spade and Christina Applegate? Nope. Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell rapping about Lazy Sunday? Not even close.
To keep you in suspense just a little longer, let’s count down the top five…
5 Star Wars Undercover Boss: 67 Million Views 4 Spider-Man Kiss: 73 Million Views 3 Hermione Growth Spurt: 76 Million Views 2 Black Jeopardy with Tom Hanks: 83 Million Views 1 Porn Teacher: 106 Million Views
The most viewed video on SNL’s YouTube channel is Amy Schumer’s “Porn Teacher” sketch? Really?
“Can you believe that?” the comic asked Howard Stern this week. “The most viewed SNL sketch of all time is me and Kyle Mooney.”
At first, Schumer said, she was shocked to hear that the sketch ended up in the top slot.

Martha Stewart shared a surprising backstage story from her past during a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” revealing how her parole restrictions prevented her from hosting “Saturday Night Live” in 2005.
The lifestyle entrepreneur disclosed that NBC had approached her about hosting the iconic comedy show immediately after her release from the Alderson federal prison camp. However, her parole conditions—which limited her to just eight hours outside her home each day—made it impossible to meet the show’s intense rehearsal and production requirements.
Stewart expressed clear frustration about the missed opportunity, even remembering her parole officer’s name and contact information. “That bastard!” she said, indicating her lingering disappointment. Despite the setback, she remains hopeful about potentially hosting the show, even encouraging fans to “start a campaign” for her appearance.

Martha Stewart could’ve hosted Saturday Night Live after she spent time behind bars.
The entrepreneur and television host said that she was invited to host SNL in 2005 after spending give months in prison for lying about a stock trade but her parole officer stopped her from doing the show.
“I wanted to and they asked me as I was coming out of Alderson — that camp that I was in for a while,” Stewart joked on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. “And my parole officer wouldn’t give me the time to do it.”
Stewart noted that she was only allowed to be out of her house eight hours a day.
“The parole officer said, no?” Fallon asked Stewart which prompted her response, “No, that bastard!”
Stewart added that she still had the name and number of her parole officer, adding, “I’m so pissed,” about not being able to do it.

For many celebrities, there's a relatively small window in which they are considered for hosting Saturday Night Live. One celebrity had that window slammed shut, not by SNL, Lorne Michaels, or the network, but by their parole officers.
Television personality Martha Stewart revealed Lorne Michaels asked her to host Saturday Night Live in 2005. The SNL boss likely wanted to capitalize on the timing, as Stewart had just been released from serving five months in prison for a fraud conviction.
"I wanted to, and they asked me as I was coming out of Alderson, that camp I was in for a while,” Stewart said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “And my parole officer wouldn’t give me the time to do it … That bastard! I still have his name and his number.”
According to Stewart, the parameters of her parole limited her time outside of the house to eight hours per day.

Martha Stewart has obviously had a very successful career, changing the way we view both the lifestyle industry and the Comedy Central roast industry.
But despite all of her accomplishments and undeniable cultural contributions, the 83-year-old star has never once hosted Saturday Night Live. But that doesn’t mean that she hasn’t been invited to host. As Stewart recently told Jimmy Fallon, Lorne Michaels asked her to host the show decades ago, but unfortunately, she was legally prevented from doing so.
“I wanted to, and they asked me as I was coming out of Alderson — that camp that I was in for a while,” Stewart explained. Of course, the “camp” in question was a federal prison camp, where Stewart served a five-month sentence beginning in late 2004. “My parole officer wouldn’t give me the time to do it,” Stewart recalled. “I was allowed to be out of my house eight hours a day,...

Martha Stewart is one of the most impersonated people on Saturday Night Live, but she has yet to host the sketch show. On a new episode of The Tonight Show, Stewart spoke to host Jimmy Fallon about being impersonated nine different times, including by David Spade.
“David’s my favorite,” Stewart confirmed. “He was wearing my poncho. The real poncho.” She added that she loves seeing a Martha Stewart impression because “imitation is the highest form of flattery and you might as well be imitated.”
Fallon then inquired whether she hopes to host SNL.

Last year, Saturday Night Live aired a sketch in which Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day played two complete strangers who inexplicably resemble Beavis and Butt-Head. And since pretty much any SNL sketch that seems to work will be quickly repeated until the joke is no longer funny, the pair reprised their roles for the red carpet premiere of Gosling’s movie The Fall Guy.
If this sketch proved anything, it’s that Beavis and Butt-Head are creepy as hell when brought to life with human actors. They looked less like beloved cartoon characters, and more like nightmarish David Lynch creations going through a mid-life crisis.
But weirdly enough, we were almost subjected to live-action versions of the dim-witted duo nearly three decades ago.
In 1996 Beavis and Butt-Head Do America brought the MTV characters to the big screen for the first time, with a cross-country animated adventure that featured the voices of stars like Demi Moore,...

Since nobody’s making a Tales From the Crypt: Bordello of Blood legacy sequel any time soon, Dennis Miller was free to chat with his pals David Spade and Dana Carvey on the most recent episode of their Fly on the Wall podcast.
The former Saturday Night Live cast members touched on topics ranging from Spade’s pitch for a Joe Dirt cartoon, SNL’s joke swap and Miller’s hair plugs. Side note: Tolstoy’s War and Peace is available to listen to for free on the same devices that people use for podcasts.
Miller did offer up one particularly interesting anecdote involving an entirely different former Weekend Update anchor: Norm Macdonald.
Before Macdonald joined SNL, and even before he worked for Roseanne, the young comedian was hired to write for The Dennis Miller Show, and his application process was highly unorthodox and extremely concise. “I heard there was a new kid in L.

Dr. Dana Carvey stroked his chin this week on the Fly on the Wall podcast, certain that he’d diagnosed the personality disorder that makes Chevy Chase difficult to work with. Chase has been a Fly on the Wall guest in the past, and it was prior to that conversation that Carvey developed his Unified Theory of Chevy Chase.
“I kind of figured him out,” Carvey told David Spade and Chase’s Community costar Joel McHale. “He has an impulse to say the thing you’re not supposed to say, even if it goes into territory that you cannot even comprehend he’s going there. But he has an impulse to do that.”
Armed with his theory, Carvey knew exactly the right method for approaching Chase’s interview. “I just sort of went with it,” he explained. “(Chase) would do all this shock stuff, and I just started finding it...

While Chevy Chase definitely won’t be in the upcoming Community movie — unless one of the characters happens to pull out a photo of their dead friend who masturbated himself into an early grave several years ago — its cast members are still fielding questions about the Caddyshack star.
Joel McHale recently appeared on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, and while McHale never appeared on Saturday Night Live, his relationship with Chevy was obviously an area of interest for the two former SNLers.
Spade asked if Chase’s bad behavior on the set of Community was “more of a rumor, or was he a bit of a pickle?” — possibly because Spade hasn’t used the internet in the past 11 years. “I’ve never answered any questions about him,” McHale joked before going on to describe just how frustrating Chase was to work with.

Funny business is pretty damn lucrative, at least according to Celebrity Net Worth. If we believe its numbers, a guy like Rowan (Mr. Bean) Atkinson can rack up a net worth of $150 million, and still not crack the list of the top 20 richest comedians.
Which jokesters make up the top 10? Here’s the updated list as of January 5, 2025.
10 Larry David and David Letterman (Tie)
With a net worth of about $400 million each, David and Letterman make this rich-guy version of a Late Night Top Ten list. Now that Curb Your Enthusiasm is done, is David done raking in the cash? That’s what we thought when Letterman “retired” from CBS, but the guy is everywhere.
9 Adam Sandler
The Sandman is a good candidate to keep climbing this list as Netflix can’t get enough of his collabs with old buddies like Rob Schneider and David Spade. With rehashes like this...

Lorne Michaels created Saturday Night Live and has guided the show through 50 years of comedy. He knows what works and what doesn't, so when one cast member ignored Michaels' note, it carried a heavy consequence.
Save for a five year hiatus, Lorne Michaels has been behind the scenes for everything at SNL. He's hired just about every kind of comedian and let the show (and its humor) change with the times. But he's always had the final say on what makes it to air.

Save for a five year hiatus, Lorne Michaels has been behind the scenes for everything at SNL. He's hired just about every kind of comedian and let the show (and its humor) change with the times. But he's always had the final say on what makes it to air.

David Spade is still trying to wrap his head around the current Saturday Night Live castmember’s casual relationship with creator Lorne Michaels.
The comedian-actor, who was a castmember on the NBC sketch comedy show from 1990 to 1996, recently told Dana Carvey on their Fly on the Wall podcast that he was shocked by how the show’s new kids speak to Michaels, as the dynamic was much different during his time on the show.
Spade recalled repertory player Sarah Sherman telling him she “texted [Lorne Michaels] and said, ‘Why did my sketch get cut?’” But a bewildered Spade thought, “I’m like, you text Lorne? That floors me.”
Carvey, a castmember on SNL from 1986 to 1993, was also seemingly surprised and asked, “As a cast member? During the show?”
The Grown Ups actor proceeded to detail a behind-the-scenes moment with Michaels and Sherman during rehearsals for the Dec. 7 episode.

Saturday Night Live Lorne Michaels can make or break someone's career in comedy, and he's been doing it for 50 years. That kind of power can be intimidating, but apparently the current SNL cast has managed to cozy up to Michaels.
As creator and executive producer, Michaels has the final say on who joins the Saturday Night Live cast, who hosts, and what sketches make it to air. Cast members and writers, especially when first joining the show, have shared stories of feeling intimidated or nervous about interacting with Michaels.
It's a sentiment shared by Fly on the Wall co-hosts David Spade and Dana Carvey. As cast members during the late '80s and early '90s, they got a front-row seat to the Lorne Michaels experience. Both have had cameos during season 50 and noticed a stark difference between how the cast and Michaels interact.

As a former Saturday Night Live cast member, David Spade joked he’s so old he recalls a time when he and his colleagues treated Lorne Michaels more as a boss than a friend.
While listing their New Year’s resolutions, Spade (who left the late-night show in 1996) told co-host Dana Carvey on a new episode of the Fly on the Wall podcast that times indeed have changed, so much so that it shocks him. He recalled an anecdote where repertory player Sarah Sherman told him she “texted [Lorne Michaels] and said, ‘Why did my sketch get cut?’ I’m like, you text Lorne? That floors me.”
Carvey, who left SNL in 1993 and has since returned on the sketch series’ storied 50th season as Potus Joe Biden, incredulously asked: “As a cast member? During the show?”
When prompted by an off-camera producer, Spade expanded on a behind-the-scenes tidbit featuring Sherman. “Lorne was...

"Stranger Things" isn't the only show keeping the fervent spirit of the '80s alive, because "The Goldbergs" acts as a giant love letter to the decade that birthed such national treasures as "ThunderCats" and "Garbage Pail Kids." Loosely based on showrunner Adam F. Goldberg's own life, the sitcom follows his family's adventures (and misadventures) in everyday scenarios that unfolded across 10 seasons between 2013 and 2023. "The Goldbergs" cast features more than a handful of recognizable names, such as Jeff Garlin and Stephen Tobolowsky, not to mention Patton Oswalt using his recognizable voice, but it's sometimes difficult to pinpoint exactly where we have seen these actors before.
Don't stress, though, since that's why we're here -- to figure out the notable shows and films where you might have seen the cast of "The Goldbergs" before. Now, that doesn't mean their entire filmographies will be covered from top to bottom, because some...

Father sure doesn’t punish the kids like he did back when we were young. At least, that’s what David Spade believes about current cast members’ relationship with Saturday Night Live daddy Lorne Michaels.
On the latest episode of Spade’s Superfly podcast with Dana Carvey, the two SNL veterans expressed utter shock about the state of Michaels/cast relations. “Sarah Sherman's like, ‘Then I texted Lorne and said, ‘Why did my sketch get cut?’” said Spade. “I’m like, ‘You text Lorne?’”
Spade was floored at the sheer audacity of a cast member communicating with Michaels without sitting outside his office for hours.
“As a cast member?” exclaimed an equally flabbergasted Carvey. “During the show?”
Spade’s incredulity didn’t end there. He told another Sherman story about the Church Lady sketch he appeared in as Hunter Biden last month. Michaels got on a microphone (another “we...

Jason Reitman's "Saturday Night" is a stressful, chaotic movie that covers the 90 minutes leading up to the first-ever episode of "Saturday Night Live" airing back in 1975. /Film's own Ethan Anderson gave it a glowing 9 out of 10 review, but "SNL" alum Chevy Chase had a different reaction. As Reitman explained on a recent episode of the "Fly on the Wall" podcast (which is hosted by "SNL" alums David Spade and Dana Carvey), Chase told Reitman his thoughts on the film after an early screening:
"Chevy loves to say the thing you're not supposed to say — to the extreme [...] I have an example for you [...] So, Chevy comes in to watch the movie, and he is there with [his wife] Jayni, and they watch the film, and he's in the group, and he comes up to me after, and he pats me on the shoulder and goes, 'Well, you should be embarrassed.'...
