Whether you intend to watch ’the big game’ on Sunday or not, there’s just something about a great sports narrative. And no, we’re not talking about the NFL’s tired retread of a matchup we already saw two years ago between Kansas City and the Philadelphia Eagles— we’re talking about sports movies. Even if you’re more into watching film than sports— and let’s be honest, if you’re part of the Film Independent community, then there’s a good chance of that — the best sports films have something for everyone. There’s the irresistible underdog you can’t help rooting for. Determined characters coming together to face insurmountable odds. The framework— an individual or team in pursuit of greatness — is a classic hero’s journey. But as the films below showcase, the best sports stories aren’t actually about the sport at all. They’re about relationships,...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Harley Quinn season 5, episode 1Harley Quinn season 5 might not have been talked about much before its release due to the focus on James Gunn's DC Universe, but I have to say it will likely turn heads. I'm a fan of the show and the expanded universe it has created, which now includes a Kite Man spinoff series. That kind of worldbuilding, presenting a lived-in world from the start full of established heroes and villains, is exactly what Gunn is going for with the Dcu, and Harley Quinn could teach the franchise some lessons.
Harley Quinn is a 2019 film focusing on the titular character's evolution after severing ties with the Joker. As she seeks to establish herself as an independent force in Gotham City's criminal underworld, the film explores her journey toward becoming Gotham's criminal Queenpin.

Laurence Fishburne left CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for a specific reason. The show, which premiered on CBS in 2000, was created by Anthony E. Zuiker and ran for 15 seasons, in the process spawning half a dozen spinoffs including CSI: Miami, which ran for 10 seasons, and CSI: NY, which ran for nine. The flagship show, which followed a Las Vegas Police Department crime scene investigation team, featured a rotating cast of stars over the years, which included William Petersen, Marg Helgenberger, Gary Dourdan, George Eads, Jorja Fox, Paul Guilfoyle, Eric Szmanda, Robert David Hall, Louise Lombard, and Elisabeth Shue.
Laurence Fishburne joined the CSI franchise in 2008, first appearing on the flagship show in season 9 as former medical doctor Raymond Langston and becoming a main cast member two episodes later, after the departure of Petersen's longtime character Gil Grissom, who had been a part of the series since the pilot. Christmas is almost here, and that means it’s time to break out those classic and nostalgic Black-led holiday flicks.
When it comes to Black Christmas cinema, the Black community takes it very seriously, as there’s literally a debate online almost every year about which Black Christmas movies are the best, which ones aren’t Christmas movies at all, and the movies you have to have seen in order to not have your “Black card” revoked.
The Preacher’s Wife and Friday After Next are definitely Christmas movies.

Let’s face it – Alien movies are not created equal. In my Alien: Romulus review, I noted that there have really only ever been two flawless films in the franchise, with the rest all having moments of genius (well – most of them) but none measuring up to the first two movies in the saga. All of this makes Alien movie rankings quite controversial, as it’s a divisive topic. So, how does our Alien movies ranked list shape up? Let’s dive right in, shall we?
Alien Vs Predator: Requiem (2007)
I honestly couldn’t believe Fox had the gall to release this as a legit entry into the franchise in 2007. At the time, the studio had a bad reputation for putting out half-baked and cheap genre fare (made even more frustrating by how many were based on top-notch properties). This was the nadir of both the Alien and Predator franchises.

Future Alien vs Predator Movies With Prey & Romulus Characters Seemingly Teased By 20th Century Boss
More Alien vs. Predator movies could be on the way, combining characters from the new subfranchises spawned by Prey and Alien: Romulus. The original crossover franchise between the Alien movies and the Predator movies kicked off with AvP in 2004 and was followed by a sequel subtitled Requiem in 2007. While AvP 3 has so far failed to come to fruition, both franchises are still going strong with the 2022 prequel Prey being followed by Predator: Badlands and 2024's Romulus becoming the second highest-grossing movie in the franchise.
The Hollywood Reporter recently sat down for an interview with 20th Century president Steve Asbell. During their conversation, he touched on the success of both franchises and the possibility of the Alien vs. Predator subfranchise continuing in the wake of their success. In a word, he said a new AvP movie would "probably" happen, though "we haven't gotten to that point." He adds that such...

Uzo Aduba was at the Friday night premiere of Searchlight Pictures’ “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat” in Los Angeles fresh from attending the Democratic National Convention.
She told Variety watching Vice President Kamala Harris accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency felt like “an outstanding check had finally been paid on the American dream.”
“It felt like the promise of America is still reaching toward fulfilling itself, and I think it makes me excited to know that the country, despite what we have seen in time, is still reaching forward toward becoming a more hopeful and more inclusive nation,” Aduba said.
“The Supremes” tells the multi-generational story of three best friends and their unbreakable sisterhood. Aduba plays Clarice Baker, who she describes as a “woman who has given everything she has for everyone else, selflessly putting aside her own dreams to see others live out theirs.”

“Alien: Romulus,” out now in theaters, is a surprise late-summer hit and proof positive that the “Alien” franchise is far from over.
And the new movie, plus the upcoming FX series “Alien: Earth,” have us wanting to look back at the series – the highs, the lows and the what-were-they-thinkings. Below is the definitive ranking of every “Alien” movie.
Chest-bursters and face-huggers are, of course, welcome.
20th Century 9. “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007)
The poster for “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” is stylized as “Avp R,” which emphasizes the fact that the movie was actually rated R, unlike the earlier PG-13-rated “Alien vs. Predator.” And, in that sense, the movie delivers the goods – there’s a ton of splatter in this installment.
A direct sequel to the earlier extraterrestrial team-up movie, “Avp R” is set in a small Colorado town, where a predator/alien hybrid from the end of the previous movie is on a bloodthirsty rampage.

Our top streaming pick this week, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” is Kevin Costner’s spiritual sequel to his seven-time Oscar winner “Dances With Wolves.” The awards chances for “Horizon” look dimmer than “Dances,” though, especially after the passion project flopped in theaters.
The film is a Western epic following the arduous journeys of settlers and outlaws as they try to reach the frontier town of Horizon. In addition to Costner, who plays a stoic horse trader named Hayes Ellison, the sprawling cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Abbey Lee, and Luke Wilson, among many others. The release of in-the-can second part has been postponed indefinitely, but now that “Chapter 1” can potentially gin up some interest with its streaming release on Max, maybe “Chapter 2” will get a new date soon.
Here are some other movies to stream this weekend:

Okay all you music biopic fans, just keep reading the title past the first two words. This should give you a hint that it’s not the “rags to riches” tale of the 60s talented titanic trio from Motown. Actually, this story is set quite a distance from Detroit. way down in North Carolina. And yes, much of the flashback sequences are set in the 1960s, but the title refers to a nickname given to three childhood friends. And if you’d guess that the ploy revolves around their “ups and downs”, romances and challenges, well you’re perhaps familiar with the novel this film is based upon…or you picked up the gist of it from the poster. So, get those tissues ready to wipe away the tears inspired by The Supremes At Earl’S All-you-can-eat.
After a brief flash-forward, the film focused on three middle-aged women strolling toward the aforementioned eatery.

Adaptation of Edward Kelsey Moore’s novel has admirable intentions and terrific cast but is too rushed to soar
In The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat, three best friends lock arms for life, hoisting each other up as they are dealt one tough hand after another. The women – played by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Uzo Aduba and Sanaa Lathan in their later years – keep their heads up through crushed dreams, manipulative romances, domestic abuse, addiction, violent hate crimes, the devastating loss of a child and a cancer diagnosis. There’s a lot of trauma to unpack. But that’s not really what The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat is out to do.
The movie, adapted from Edward Kelsey Moore’s bestselling novel and directed by Tina Mabry, stays buoyant and lighthearted, with intention. Hollywood only tends to tell Black stories when they can dwell on misfortune. This dramedy, instead, chooses joy and laughter,...

While the all-star casts of The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat and Fight Night will have their glitzy premieres in Hollywood and New York, respectively, in the upcoming weeks, when it came time to screen those films to audiences for the first time, that took place far from the typical red carpet venues — a performing arts center in Martha’s Vineyard.

One of the greatest franchises of all time, Alien has found its way to immortality through its unique ability to evolve. Few franchises can bounce around genres quite like Alien. Additionally, each director brings their own flavor to the conversation. Fede Álvarez joins a club that features Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and David Fincher as he hopes to reignite love in the iconic series. Today, FandomWire is ranking the films in the franchise, including Alien: Romulus, which releases this week.

When the script for “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat” landed on Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s desk, she jumped at the opportunity to star in the historical drama. Despite a three-decade-long career, it’s a rarity for Ellis-Taylor to find herself cast in projects that pass the Bechdel test. “The Supremes,” which debuted at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Mvaaff) on Wednesday night, is based on the best-selling novel by Edward Kelsey Moore. Directed by Tina Mabry, the film offered Ellis-Taylor and her castmates, Sanaa Lathan and Uzo Aduba, the chance to participate in something rarely seen on screen.
“There is a lack of curiosity about Black women, about the lives of Black women. A lack of interest, and a lack of care,” Ellis-Taylor says, sitting down with Variety at the festival. “[The Supremes]” is a rebellion against that.”

As so much media loves to remind us, life is not our hardships but the friends we’ve made along the way. Edward Kelsey Moore’s novel The Supremes At Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat is a charming examination of that maxim, balancing humor and heartbreak so as to reaffirm the value of keeping on.
