Netflix’s new thriller limited series “Midnight Mass” comes from the mastermind who gave you “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor.” But just because he dreamed up “The Haunting” franchise doesn’t mean Mike Flanagan’s new show, which launches Friday, is anything like his anthology. In fact, he’s spent a few weeks making sure to correct people on social media who assume “Midnight Mass” is Season 3 of “The Haunting.”

“One of the reasons why we’re very careful to calibrate the expectations properly is that I do feel like people who mistakenly approach this material the same way they would approach ‘Hill House’ or ‘Bly’ are going to be surprised to find it’s so different,” Flanagan told TheWrap in a joint interview with his producing partner Trevor Macy.

Netflix released the official teaser for “Midnight Mass,” the upcoming supernatural horror series from Mike Flanagan.

Starring Zach Gilford, Kate Siegel and Hamish Linklater, the seven-episode series follows an isolated island community that experiences miraculous events and frightening omens after the arrival of a mysterious priest. The show entered production last August and wrapped up in December.

Flanagan — who also created, directed and wrote “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor” — is known for crafting harrowing stories without relying on horror tropes.

In a letter released with the teaser, Flanagan wrote: “I’m just going to admit it… ‘Midnight Mass’ is my favorite project so far. As a former altar boy, about to celebrate 3 years of sobriety, it’s not had to see what makes this so personal. The ideas at the root of this show scare me to my core.”

Netflix is calling all Mike Flanagan fans to “Midnight Mass” with the first teaser for “The Haunting” franchise creator’s new limited series.

On Monday, the streaming service dropped this early look at the mysterious series, which you can watch here and via the video above. “Midnight Mass,” which was created by “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor” mastermind Flanagan, stars Zach Gilford and Hamish Linklater, and will debut on Sept. 24.

“We tend to dislike mysteries. We feel uncomfortable not knowing,” Linklater’s priest Father Paul says to Gilford’s character, Riley Flynn, in the teaser, as we are shown brief glimpses of a desolate town. “The more that we know, the less we bend, the more brittle we become, the easier to break.”

Syfy has canceled the horror series Ghost Wars after its debut 13-episode season, Deadline has confirmed. The series premiered in October 2017.

Created by Simon Barry, Ghost Wars was an acquisition title for the cable network. Set in a remote Alaskan town that has been overrun by paranormal forces, the series focuses on local outcast Roman Mercer (Avan Jogia) who must overcome the town’s prejudices and his own personal demons if he’s to harness his repressed psychic powers and save everyone from the mass haunting that’s threatening to destroy them all.

Ghost Wars starred Vincent D’Onofrio, Kim Coates, Avan Jogia, Kristin Lehman and Meatloaf. David Von Ancken directed the pilot while Barry helmed two episodes. Other directors included Leslie Hope, Michael Nankin, Mathias Herdndl, and Jason Priestley. Nomadic Pictures’ Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev served as executive producers with Barry, Dennis Heaton and Von Ancken.

It seems Syfy has given up the ghost. The Ghost Wars TV show on Syfy has been cancelled after one season. The story centers around Melanie (Hope), who is many years sober and contentedly married to Frank (Greenwood) until a sudden terminal diagnosis leads her to leave everything behind for Los Angeles. Melanie sets down on a destructive path when she encounters a tintype photographer (Kober), and his challenge to sober up, leading Melanie to pose for a series of explicit photographs and to a full-blown affair.

Megan Follows (Reign), Ben Ayres (Burden of Truth), David Hewlett (The Shape of Water), Kris Holden-Reid (Vikings), Grace Lynn Kung (Mary Kills People), Kristin Lehman (Altered Carbon), Daniel Maslany (Murdoch Mysteries), Tony Nappo (Bad Blood) and Paula Rivera co-star.

Jeff Kober wrote the screenplay, which is based on his play Pornography. Hope produced the project with co-producer Tina Vacalopoulos.

“Altered Carbon” has its fair share of issues, but the ending isn’t one of them. Strictly from a narrative standpoint, that’s not always easy to do. Sure, a great ending can stand out from a snoozy middle, but often a poor start leads to a similarly lackluster finale.

Yet Netflix’s big-budget sci-fi series stands out for all the right reasons. The “love conquers all” kicker has real emotion behind it. There are answers aplenty, which is a kindness not often shown by other mystery shows. But most of all, “Altered Carbon’s” ending is a bona fide delight because it does what so many modern shows refuse to do: It ends. Definitively.

Altered Carbon is the latest big-budget series to come from Netflix.

The streaming giant is betting big on the series, and there are rumblings that it has already been renewed for Season 2 even though Season 1 is yet to debut.

The series is set in a world in which bodies are mere vessels and consciousness can be digitized and transplanted into a brand new body.

It is rather scary to think about, and it's difficult for us to explain, so thankfully, Netflix today released a brand new featurette that includes interviews with the cast and crew.
