To some, the 1990s seem like just yesterday. To others, they're a vintage decade with sparse technology and classic, "old" movies. Both can be true at the same time, and when it comes to films from that decade, there was a lot of variety, especially in the realm of horror. While some '90s horror movies didn't age well, some films, like Scream and Death Becomes Her, impacted the genre in an innovative way while playing with familiar themes.
With nostalgia being such a huge part of modern filmmaking, audiences have been drawn to well-known films being reimagined for a new millennium. Many '90s horror movies and their iconic scream queens have already seen sequels and reboots, with some franchises still going strong. Others have been tucked away for over three decades, just waiting for a fresh new take, and some are definitely primed to get updates.

Stranger Things and Ghostbusters: Afterlife / Frozen Empire actor Finn Wolfhard recently made his feature directorial debut with a horror comedy called Hell of a Summer, which he directed alongside Billy Bryk, who also appeared in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and gave it a 5/10 review than can be read at This Link. Hell of a Summer has secured a U.S. distribution deal with Neon, and will receive a theatrical release sometime in 2025 – and earlier this week, we learned that Wolfhard and Bryk have already lined up their second genre project, as they’re writing a remake of the 1999 horror comedy Idle Hands, which they might end up directing as well. The Ghostbusters franchise’s Jason Reitman is on board to produce the film. But what does original Idle Hands star Devon Sawa think of this announcement?...

Before Jonathan Mostow attempted to break out with big sci-fi films like the much-maligned Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and the Bruce Willis movie Surrogates, he made a humble little missing persons thriller with Kurt Russell called Breakdown. The film’s plot would involve one of the worst situations to have while traveling cross-country in the middle of nowhere and it is also one of our picks for the 10 Best Kurt Russell Movies. The paranoia film is an underrated gem that features one of the last great performances of the late J.T. Walsh. Blu-ray.com has now reported that Breakdown will soon be getting a 4K physical media release from Paramount Home Media Distribution. The cast that rounds out the film includes Kathleen Quinlan, M.C. Gainey, and Jack Noseworthy. And the description reads, “All roads lead to excitement with Kurt Russell in reakdown, the non-stop thrill ride that’s ‘a movie of nerve-frying intensity…...

In Jonathan Mostow's 1997 thriller "Breakdown," Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan play a happily married couple driving their high-tech SUV from Boston to San Diego. By accident, they almost run into a pickup truck on the remote highways of Arizona. When Russell later meets the driver of the pickup (M.C. Gainey) at a gas station, tensions are high. Later still, when Russell and Quinlan are back on the road, their car suddenly stops. Quinlan offers to hitchhike into town to get help, while Russell stays with the SUV. It will be quite a while before they see each other again. It seems that Quinlan has been kidnapped! Russell has to drive around Arizona's remote backroads looking for clues, and eventually, he faces off against the kidnappers. "Breakdown" also stars the immortal J.T. Walsh, and a punky Jack Noseworthy.

If you had to choose which horror movie villain you could outlast, chances are Chucky would be at the top of most peoples’ lists. Come on, he’s like two and a half feet tall, how could you not win? Why not just kick him across the room? Well, this can work every now and then, but Chucky is one diabolical doll and sooner or later he’ll find a way to get you. But imagine this gets swapped: Chucky is the oversized one matching wits and knives with someone – or something – a fraction of his size. That’s just the scenario Devon Sawa pictures, wondering what it would be like if the hand from Idle Hands were to take on the Good Guy.
Speaking with Collider, Devon Sawa – who has appeared in every season of Chucky so far, albeit as different characters – said that the possessed appendage of Anton...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: It’s the Sagrada Familia of Shitty Horror Movies
“Oh, this is your Sagrada Familia,” IndieWire’s Christian Zilko said to me as the credits of “Event Horizon” rolled, tears from laughter still streaming down my face. “You’re like one of those architecture nerds who think it’s more beautiful because it’s unfinished.”
Much like the semi-sentient spaceship in Paul W. S. Anderson’s magnificently misguided horror flick from 1997, Zilko knows me so well that I’m occasionally startled by his insights into my cinematic soul. That...

A new episode of our Best Horror Party Movies video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking at the 1999 horror comedy Idle Hands (watch it Here). To find out how we party to this movie, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Rodman Flender – who also directed Leprechaun 2 and happens to be the uncle of Dune star Timothée Chalamet – from a screenplay by Terri Hughes and Ron Milbauer, Idle Hands has the following synopsis: When slacker teen Anton Tobias has his right hand possessed by a demonic force, he finds that his life gets a lot more interesting. While Anton himself is an amiable guy, his hand proves to be an appendage of death, killing his two best buddies, Pnub and Mick, who return to life as wisecracking zombies. In addition to murdering those closest to him, Anton’s evil hand significantly hinders his chances with lovely neighbor Molly.

Event Horizon ends with Joely Richardson's Starck having one final vision of Sam Neill's Dr. Weir, but what does it mean? Event Horizon's original screenplay featured an alien causing the hallucinations that haunt the crew, but once director Paul W.S. Anderson came onboard, he changed the premise to the ship itself being possessed by hellish forces. In addition to obvious nods to horror classics like The Shining and Alien, the "Realm of Chaos" from Warhammer also inspired Event Horizon's depiction of Hell.
Event Horizon was a box-office dud in 1997, but thanks to VHS, DVD and TV airings, it gradually amassed a loyal cult following. The film has some truly unsettling scenes and bouts of gore, and Event Horizon's lost footage has since become a thing of internet myth too. The story doesn't end well for the majority of its characters, though Richardson's Starck, Richard T.

When Paramount got its first look at a cut of “Event Horizon” in 1997, some studio executives thought that director Paul W.S. Anderson had made a film so disturbing that it slandered outer space itself.
“Someone actually said to me, ‘We’re the studio that makes Star Trek!’” Anderson recalled with a grin on his face. “They weren’t only horrified by my movie; they felt I was besmirching ‘Star Trek’ somehow, because I was also in space and doing all this terrible stuff.”
Peppered with images of unspooled astronaut guts and suicidal blood orgies, it’s safe to say that “Event Horizon” had boldly gone where no “Star Trek” entry had gone before. The film follows a crew venturing to the outer reaches of the solar system to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a space ship and its even more perplexing reappearance seven years later. Jonathan Groff is opening up about his early days in New York City and his first same-sex kiss.
The future “Frozen” and “Hamilton” star was only about 19 years old when he was a waiter at the Chelsea Grill in Hell’s Kitchen. It’s there that he met Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/Efa).
“He talked to me about the organization and the good that they did for the community and he also talked to me about how they have volunteers standing with red buckets collection money [at Broadway theaters],” Groff tells Jan Svendsen on a new episode of the “Broadway Gives Back” podcast.
He added, “You could watch the second act of Broadway shows by signing up as a volunteer. So the volunteering aspect of the organization, plus the fact that I could see theater got me super interested.”

As someone who has been a huge fan of Event Horizon ever since it was released in 1997, I’m always on board for anything that celebrates this audacious, terrifying, and grotesquely beautiful exercise in cosmic horror. Written by Philip Eisner and directed by (my boy) Paul W.S. Anderson (who was still just Paul Anderson at this stage in his career), there’s no denying that Event Horizon wears its influences proudly on its blood-stained sleeve, but there’s something about how Eisner approached those homages he works into his script that felt unusual and thought-provoking at the time the film was hitting the big screen during the summer of that year. And I’d be so bold as to say that even now, Event Horizon feels like a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic excursion in sci-fi and pure, unfiltered horror that rarely ever comes along out of the studio system.
So when I...

This is a good week to be a horror fan who collects home media, because we have some killer releases headed our way on Tuesday. Personally, I’ve been waiting ever so patiently for Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition release of Paul W.S. Scream Factory is also giving Julia Ducournau’s Raw a stateside Blu-ray release finally, and Arrow Video is showing some love to Patrick Picard’s The Bloodhound this week as well.
We also have two Steelbooks that will be available this Tuesday: Gattaca in 4K as well as the 40th anniversary release of Friday the 13th Part II, and if you need to play catch-up,...

If you've listened to our Corpse Club podcast, then you know that several of us here at Daily Dead are very passionate fans of Event Horizon, so we're extra thrilled that Scream Factory will release the 1997 sci-fi horror film on a Collector's Edition Blu-ray. Previously slated for a release last fall, the Event Horizon Collector's Edition Blu-ray is now coming out on March 23rd (due to efforts to find lost footage from the film), and the full list of special features indicate that it will be well worth the wait.
We have the official press release with the complete list of bonus features below. Longtime Event Horizon fans may notice that the extensive bonus features don't include the movie's lost footage, but there is still a lot of new content to look forward to, and Scream Factory discussed their efforts to find the lost footage in a post on Facebook...

Prop Store's auctions are always a treat for genre fans, because they're able to offer some of the very best props and costumes. Of course, an individual item could set you back hundreds of thousands of dollars, but this August's auction is focused on sci-fi movies and features items from Alien, Men in Black, Event Horizon, Judge Dredd, and many more! Even if you're not planning to bid, it's worth taking a look at their catalogue to see what they're offering. You can find all of the important details below:
"Next month's auction, brings one of the most significant and largest spaceships that we've ever handled to the block: the Nostromo from Ridley Scott's Alien (1979). The Nostromo stands among spaceship icons like the Millennium Falcon and the Discovery from 2001, and this is the primary model used throughout filming. It measures a massive 11 feet in length and originally had systems for lighting and CO2 effects.

Howdy all. I’m having a crummy day. A repairman spilled gross A/C water on my PC, along with other parts of my mostly-carpeted apartment, and the computer is acting stupid now. I’m trying not to freak out by keeping busy, because, as they say, Idle Hands are the Devil’s playthings.
Speaking of which, I guess Devon Sawa, star of the aforementioned film, needs something to do to keep his fingers moving because he recently expressed a desire to revisit the cult classic. When asked by ComicBook.com about doing another entry, the actor got pretty excited, saying:

Event Horizon (1997) plays this weekend (August 26th and 27th) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series.
Event Horizon is almost 20 years old but it’s midnight movie cult status is fairly new. I saw it when it was new and thought it was good, but over the years a lot of younger movie geeks, to whom Event Horizon as apparently struck a chord, have approached me wanting to talk about it, and now here we are presenting at midnight at The Tivoli. Good.
Event Horizon was made in 1997 and is a somewhat conventional science-fiction horror film that reflects upon earlier sci-fi efforts such as 2001 A Space Odyssey and Alien, yet owes as much to the some of the gorier horror films of the ‘80s,...

Beyond Therapy: Brown’s Illogical Entry of Femme Revenge
For the most part, director Matthew A. Brown presents his directorial debut Julia without the exploitative flourishes notoriously featured in the classic genre cinema influencing his narrative. A rape revenger thriller that basically plays like a sanitized version of 1978’s I Spit on Your Grave (recently remade in 2010, followed by two sequels, items that only prove you can take the tale out of the 70s but perhaps not the other way round), Brown creates a compelling vehicle for actress Ashley C. Williams, whose name may not ever be mentioned without reference to her ‘participation’ in contemporary torture porn’s most iconic confection, The Human Centipede (2009). Despite its still relevant ‘take back the night’ yearning, Brown seems uninterested in patching up a variety of major illogical plot holes plaguing the initial set-up while failing to achieve anything innovative by way of an achingly predictable finale.

One of the key criticisms bandied about regarding horror movies in recent years has been the abundance of films which have focused on the brutalisation of women. Films like I Spit On Your Grave and its sequel, Maniac, Hidden In The Woods and many other films have focused on this aspect, some have done so in a manner which feels like it has a point to make, some do so veering close to doing it in an exploitative sense, indeed the BBFC felt so with the cut version of I Spit… Julia also fits into this rubric but while there are some aspects which are certainly problematic, as a film in its own right, it’s more interesting...

It has been a long and pothole-ridden road to “Scream,” which premiered on MTV tonight (June 30). While the one-time music video channel has produced reality shows that have been both genre-defining and ratings-winning (including but not limited too “The Real World” and “Jersey Shore”), its history with scripted dramas makes the Philadelphia Phillies current win-loss record look impressive. MTV has been trying to break the scripted drama code for more than 20 years, with very little to show for it. Personal crises, sexual mischief, groundbreaking depictions of same-sex relationships and other elements that have worked for reality TV have rarely struck gold with the network’s audiences when an actual script supervisor involved. “Awkward” and “Teen Wolf” -- a pair of shows that premiered in 2011 -- are still on the air, and have garnered mostly positive reviews to go with small but devoted followings. (“Awkward” will begin airing its fifth and...

In our ever-more-fragmented media landscape, we're seeing fewer and fewer recognizable brand-name stars for *everybody*, but we're probably getting more and more recognizable brand-name stars for *somebody*. And that means that people who, to certain individuals, are clearly stars of a certain stature are virtual unknowns to great masses, possibly to majorities. And that's even the case with culture-watching professionals. Take Britt Robertson. I didn't see many "Tomorrowland" reviews calling her an unknown or even a newcomer, thankfully, but plenty of critics are still bending over backwards to reference credits like "Dan in Real Life" or "Delivery Man" as if audiences may struggle to place her. I hear her name and I think of an actress who has been the unquestioned star of at least two network TV shows and one of the stars (if only for a for a season) of a bona fide hit. In the sphere of what I do,...

Marilyn Monroe was a study in contradictions. She was the giddy, cooing blonde who became one of America’s haughtiest sex symbols, as well as a woman haunted by a thorny relationship with her mentally ill mom and the pressures of fame. The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe, a two-night mini-series on Lifetime, tries to peer into the woman behind the legend, opening up the scars that most viewers couldn’t see under the flash and sizzle of the big screen. However, the mini-series is too disjointed and melodramatic to completely work as a biopic. Nevertheless, Kelli Garner is masterful as Monroe, digging into the pain and vulnerability of a cultural icon without ever succumbing to mere impersonation. It’s a terrific performance, the magnetic core of an otherwise muddled misfire.

Julia
Written & Directed by Matthew A. Brown
USA, 2014
Not all movies have a grand message or thought-provoking theme. Some movies are satisfied with being a beautiful orgy of sex and madness. Matthew A. Brown’s debut film, Julia, is a stylized bloodletting that pushes the limits of good taste and tests your allegiance to its heroine. A delightfully sordid affair that leaves you feeling all kinds of icky, this is a must-add to your October calendar.
Julia is the perfect companion piece to another wonderfully-dark 2014 revenge thriller, Blue Ruin. Only, instead of the protagonist being completely inept at the deadly arts, Julia Shames (Ashley C. Williams) was born to play the part. Wrapped beneath three layers of clothing and hiding behind giant “grandma” glasses, Julia is a cute but awkward girl who tries her best to be invisible. When she finally musters the courage to accept a date with the...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Archstone Distribution. Director/writer: Matthew A. Brown. Cast: Ashley C. Williams, Tahyna Tozzi, Jack Noseworthy and Joel de la Fuente. Julia is a rape revenge thriller, from first time feature filmmaker Mathew A. Brown. This film is set to release at the Screamfest La film festival and an early review of the film is hosted here. In Julia, one very shy woman walks into an isolated apartment. Here, a horrifying tragedy takes place, one which is familiar to this genre. The next seventy or so minutes involves the protagonist transforming into something more bloody and murderous. Heavy on tropes and castration scenes, Julia is an unsettling horror film. The film utilizes lighting effectively, while the film builds in intensity. Julia is a haunting feature, which is difficult to forget. The film begins and stays with the character Julia (Ashley C. Williams...

On Nov. 22, America and the world mark the 50th anniversary of one of the most momentous events of the 20th century, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
As it did last year with "Killing Lincoln," National Geographic Channel has turned to another best-seller by Fox News' Bill O'Reilly and historian Martin Dugard to dramatize the occasion.
Premiering Sunday, Nov. 10, the docudrama version of "Killing Kennedy" follows the twin trajectories of JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald until they meet on that fateful day in Dallas' Dealey Plaza.
Directed by Nelson McCormick from a script by Kelly Masterson, "Killing Kennedy" stars Rob Lowe as JFK, Ginnifer Goodwin as first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Will Rothhaar as Lee Harvey Oswald, Michelle Trachtenberg as Marina Oswald, Jack Noseworthy as Bobby Kennedy, Casey Siemaszko as Jack Ruby, Francis Guinan as Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Flood as Kennedy insider Kenneth O'Donnell.

Killing Kennedy is liable to become a massive hit for the National Geographic Channel, and Once Upon a Time‘s Ginnifer Goodwin isn’t going to hurt things at all. As production gets underway, a couple of first looks have hit, and they’re pretty impressive. The two images are almost creepy, especially if we put them through some filters.
