Amalia Ulman’s Magic Farm will plant roots as the opening night screening of the second edition of the Los Angeles Festival of Movies. Presented by Mubi and Mezzanine, Lafm is set to take place from April 3-6, and it will feature a program of more than 20 feature films, a curated shorts roster, an inaugural animation program and featured artists talks.
Magic Farm, a Mubi film that had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last month, will open the fest at Vidiots’ Eagle Theatre on April 3. Written and directed by Ulman, the pic stars Chloë Sevigny, Simon Rex and Alex Wolff in the story of a film crew working for an edgy media company that travels to Argentina to profile a local musician. In her The Hollywood Reporter review, critic Sheri Linden wrote that “Magic Farm features a stupendous cast fully in sync with Ulman’s deadpan absurdity.

The independent-focused Los Angeles Festival of Movies is preparing for its second edition, unveiling the first wave of its coming line-up for April 3 to 6. The fest, co-presented by Mubi and Mezzanine, will kick-off with an opening night screening of Amalia Ulman’s south-of-the-border satire “Magic Farm,” starring Chloë Sevigny, Simon Rex and Alex Wolff as an inept documentary crew that ends up in the wrong country after embarking to profile an Argentinian musician. The feature premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January; this Lafm selection will mark its West Coast premiere.
Other feature inclusions are the world premiere of Dennis Cooper and Zac Farley’s “Room Temperature,” about an annual family-operated haunted house that dramatically ups the stakes; the U.S. premiere of Alexandra Simpson’s “No Sleep Till,” a hurricane-set drama from Roc Films and Omnes Films; and Grace Glowicki’s “Dead Lover,” a horror-comedy coming off a Sundance premiere and SXSW screenings.

Cumbia music is the one grounding constant in Argentine-born Spanish filmmaker Amalia Ulman’s sophomore effort “Magic Farm,” a formally radical, biting satire about odious, privileged Americans adrift in a remote Argentine rural town. The group of foreigners works for a Vice-type media company dedicated to exploiting offbeat stories from around the world for sensationalist video content. The latest target for their culture-mining operation is Super Carlitos, a whimsical singer known for wearing bunny ears, residing in the town of San Cristobal. Unbeknown to useless producer Jeff (Alex Wolff of “Hereditary” fame), a place with that name could be anywhere in Latin America.
With the same uncomfortably dry sense of humor she exhibited in her debut feature “El Planeta” — where she and her real mother played a financially strapped mother-daughter duo — Ulman casts herself as Elena, the cameraperson and interpreter. There’s an inevitably metatextual quality to her character, since...

Alex Wolff is praising his “Magic Farm” co-star Chloë Sevigny for setting the tone for the satirical feature.
Wolff, who stars alongside Sevigny, Simon Rex, Camila del Campo, and Joe Apollonio in the film, said during the IndieWire Studio at Sundance, presented by Dropbox, that Sevigny is one of his acting inspirations. Thus, he understandably was “nervous” to act opposite her on the indie.
“Magic Farm” centers on a Vice News-esque documentary film crew led by Sevigny’s character. The crew travels to Argentina to expose the effects of pesticides on people; Amalia Ulman wrote and directed the film.
When asked by IndieWire’s editorial director Kate Erbland how the two onscreen generations, represented by Sevigny and Rex’s respective characters and del Campo and Wolff’s roles, impacted the making of the film, Wolff credited Sevigny’s three decades in Hollywood as key to making “Magic Farm” work.

When we last saw Mo, it was the summer of 2022, and the comedy series, created by Mohammed Amer and Ramy Youssef, had just completed an excellent first season by stranding Amer’s Mo Najjar — a Palestinian asylum seeker living in Houston — on the wrong side of the U.S.-Mexico border. There was periodic talk of Mo’s Muslim faith and of his family’s hope that they could one day return to their homeland, but the show was primarily a light, wry comedy about the logistics of life as an undocumented immigrant.

Amalia Ulman’s sophomore feature bridged her Argentinian family’s story of unrest with an “unserious” American crew that finds themselves stuck in the middle.
The “El Planeta” director wanted to tell the story of her family, who had been affected by the springs in northern Argentina, for years and finally found that her film “Magic Farm,” which debuted at Sundance Film Festival last weekend, was the right avenue to tell it.
“It was in the back of my mind for a few years until I came up with a story and the way to bridge and create the story was through this crew–this very unserious crew that comes from New York that are all dealing with their own problems,” the writer-director told TheWrap at our Sundance Studio presented by World of Hyatt. “The real story is happening, but they’re trying to fake some stupid, clickbaity trend.”

New York-based writer-director Amalia Ulman returns to her Argentine roots for her second feature, and as in the Spain-set El Planeta, she’s keenly interested in the boundless human capacity for living in a state of denial. Revolving around a group of supposed journalists — well, content creators — who spend the entire movie missing a huge story right under their noses, Magic Farm features a stupendous cast fully in sync with Ulman’s deadpan absurdity. The actors effortlessly entwine the droll and the ingenuous, but as Ulman juggles more characters and more plot angles than in her first movie, there isn’t necessarily more payoff.
The ambling action begins with a quintet of cranky New Yorkers arriving at a rustic hotel in the middle of the Argentine countryside in the middle of the night. They don’t quite know it yet, but these variously lost souls are literally lost: They’re...

Blink Twice (2024), the directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz, takes us to a disturbing and satisfying ending after introducing us to the vacation of our dreams. The psychological thriller takes inspiration from a lot of classic movies but also presents a pretty fresh take on the powers that abusers are often given in the modern world despite being called out for their deeds. Kravitz, who has co-written the film with E.T. Feigenbaum, presents darkly comical social commentary in the guise of a vacation gone wrong thriller. It features a creepy good turn from Channing Tatum and a screenplay that keeps you on the edge of your seat till the very end.
In the following article, we will take a detailed look at all the twists and turns that you will see in Blink Twice, including a discussion of its wild ending and what it means. Please be aware that this will...

When the story picks up with Mo Najjar in Mo season 2 this month, he definitely has a lot on his plate. And getting back into the U.S. after crossing the border into Mexico isn't going to be his biggest problem, as revealed in the official trailer.
Mo season 2 premieres Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025 with all 8 episodes on Netflix. As we saw by the end of season 1, the Palestinian refugee and his family still haven't gotten a U.S. citizenship despite being in the country for over 20 years. That means he can't leave or he loses his asylum.
Though due to a few factors, he accidentally ends up in Mexico. So what happens next? It's not an easy way back home, and the trailer shows us how long he's been gone. We shared it below:
Poor guy has been in Mexico for six months, which is not a short amount of time!

Straight out of Houston, Texas, Netflix has revealed the official trailer and key art for the second season of its Mo series. The award-winning comedy from Netflix and A24 returns on January 30 for the conclusion of Mo’s journey.
In Mo Season 2, Mo Najjar straddles the line between two cultures, three languages and a ton of bull**** as a Palestinian on the path to U.S. citizenship. The new episodes find Mo stranded across the border and desperate to return to Houston before his family’s asylum hearing.
As a stateless refugee without a passport, Mo is going to need all the hustle and charm he can muster. Little does he know that the journey home is just the start of his troubles, and there’s a new guy in town ready to steal both his longtime love Maria, and his dream of finally returning to Palestine.

“Mo” has revealed a new set of guest stars along with its Season 2 trailer.
Comedians Hannibal Burress, Matt Rife, Liza Koshy and Ralph Barbosa plus rapper Slim Thug are all a part of the Season 2 guest cast, joining previously announced guest stars Simon Rex and Johanna Braddy.
The trailer opens with Mo (series co-creator Mo Amer) complaining to Barbosa, seemingly a street food vendor, about having been stuck in Mexico for six months — following up on the Season 1 finale, in which Mo is mistakenly transported there from Houston with no passport due to his status as an undocumented Palestinian refugee. “Mo, why you wanna go back to America so bad?” Barbosa says. “You’ve been bouncing around that embassy for months, bro.”
Rife is seen playing an official that Mo argues with at the embassy. “Maybe just come to terms with the fact: You’re Mexican now. Feliz cumpleaños,” Rife says snidely,...

Exclusive: After co-producing and co-financing Magic Farm, the latest film from writer-director Amalia Ulman (El Planeta), which is set to world premiere in the Premieres section of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, Mubi has locked down distribution rights to the dark comedy in North America and the UK.
They’ll release the ensemble film, featuring Chloë Sevigny (Monsters), Alex Wolff (A Quiet Place: Day One), Simon Rex (Red Rocket), and more, in 2025.
In Magic Farm, a media crew mistakenly ends up in the wrong country while trying to profile a musician. As they collaborate with locals to create a viral trend, relationships form amid an unfolding health crisis. Joe Apollonio (Betty), Ulman and Camila del Campo also star.
The film is produced by Spacemaker Productions, Mubi, and Rei Cine and co-financed by Spacemaker Productions, Mubi, and Tango Entertainment. Producers included Alex Hughes, Eugene Kotlyarenko, and Riccardo Maddalosso of Spacemaker Productions. Robert Pattinson’s production company Icki Eneo Arlo was among the executive producers, with The Match Factory handling international sales for the title.
Stated Ulman, “I couldn’t be more excited to have partnered with Mubi on the production of Magic Farm. This was a project that required taking risks, and their team was so supportive in realizing our vision.”
“We’re thrilled to have partnered with Mubi on Magic Farm,” added Spacemaker. “Their taste in bold and uncompromising cinema is unparalleled and we strongly believe in their vision to bring Amalia’s unique film to audiences.”
Recently, Mubi released Coralie Fargeat’s acclaimed body horror pic The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, which won Fargeat the prize for Best Screenplay at Cannes and is one of this year’s big awards contenders. Among the company’s recent productions is Kelly Reichardt’s upcoming The Mastermind starring Josh O’Connor.

Now, over 12 years into their collaboration and with three films under their belts, the pair celebrated their partnership by accepting the Wavelength Award at IndieWire Honors 2024, presented by host Simon Rex at Citizen News in Hollywood on the evening of Thursday, December 5.
“It’s such an honor to receive this award with Steve tonight,” said Stockhausen as the duo took the stage. “Hard work with great friends is really a joy and thank you so much for seeing that. And being on the same wavelength is really what we all strive to do every single day and it defines to me what it is to be a collaborator, to be listening so hard that you’re trying to...

Taking the stage at Citizen News in Hollywood on Thursday, December 5 for IndieWire Honors 2024, Pamela Anderson had the aura of a classic movie star — and her recent turn in Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” may make her just that. Anderson is being lauded with awards buzz and, to kick off the season, host Simon Rex presented her with the Performance Award to celebrate a moment in Anderson’s career she’s been waiting a long, long time for.
“Thank you IndieWire for this prestigious honor and for giving me a stage to count my blessings and give thanks where credit is due. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude that you would choose to celebrate my humble performance. I just hope it’s only the beginning,” Anderson said. “I share his honor with my ‘The Last Showgirl’ family, Gia Coppola, Kate Gersten, Jamie Lee Curtis, Billie Lourd, Kiernan Shipka, Brenda Song,...

After more than 20 years away from the podium, former MTV host Simon Rex made his return engagement holding down the house for this year’s film-focused IndieWire Honors. On December 5 at Citizen News in Los Angeles, Rex kicked off a night honoring Jennifer Lopez, Denis Villeneuve, Selena Gomez, and more with a raunchy speech that put a darkly comedic speed on current Hollywood instability.
“We’re here to celebrate 13 incredible people who remain committed to making independent and original storytelling,” Rex began. “The main reason I’m here is that is that my agent can’t say no to anything.”
Rex famously agreed to star in Sean Baker’s “Red Rocket” (2021) without telling his management — an experience the actor elaborated on in-conversation with IndieWire ahead of the event. During his opening monologue, Rex offered the audience a choice between “good news” and “bad news.” The crowd unanimously agreed to accept the bad first.

From building 14 blocks of ancient Rome and filling it with 2,000 extras for Gladiator II to ensuring Sing Sing‘s cast of formerly incarcerated actors was comfortable shooting in a prison, the producers behind this year’s best picture contenders had to navigate everything from the Arabian Desert to nervous studio executives.
Lucy Fisher (Gladiator II), Mary Parent (Dune: Part Two), Amy Pascal (Challengers), Samantha Quan (Anora), Tessa Ross (Conclave) and Monique Walton (Sing Sing) came together in Los Angeles for The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual Producer Roundtable to talk about getting stuck in mud (literally) while sticking it out in Hollywood. Says Parent, “So many people are driven by fear right now. Everyone’s jumping ship. As a producer, you can never jump ship.”
What did your first job as a Hollywood producer entail?
Mary Parent It was one of the few movies that I had the luxury of shooting in Los Angeles.

If you were a fan of Mo season 1 on Netflix when it first debuted in August 2022, then you'll be happy to know that the second season finally has a release date! The streamer renewed the show back in January 2023, and we've been waiting for it ever since!
Well, the wait is almost over! Mo season 2 premieres Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025 on Netflix. Just like the first season, you can expect another 8 episodes to finish up the story. Because that's right, this is also the final season of the comedy-drama. The release date has been set about two years after Netflix first announced the renewal news. I'm not going to complain. I'm just looking forward to the premiere at this point.
Season 1 ended with Mo accidentally finding himself in Mexico, which is really bad news for someone who doesn't have a passport or U.S. citizenship yet. How is he going to get himself out of this one?...

Netflix has announced that Mo Season 2 will debut on the streaming service on January 30, 2025. The award-winning comedy series comes from Netflix and A24.
In Mo Season 2, Mo Najjar straddles the line between two cultures, three languages and a ton of bull**** as a Palestinian on the path to U.S. citizenship. The new episodes find Mo stranded across the border and desperate to get back to Houston before his family’s asylum hearing.
As a stateless refugee without a passport, Mo is going to need all the hustle and charm he can muster. Little does he know that the journey home is just the start of his troubles, and there’s a new guy in town ready to steal both his longtime love Maria and his falafel taco recipe.
Funny, poignant, and topical, the series is created and executive produced by comedians Mo Amer and Ramy Youssef. The final season...
