A policeman's son, he absconded from home at eighteen to find work as an actor with the Imperial Film Company. He later turned to writing and began to direct socially conscious films from the mid-1930's. During the 1950's, he made more popular commercial entertainments, including India's first Technicolor feature The Savage Princess (1952).

Rahat would later get married to Sultan Ahmed ( Saira Banu's brother). From this marriage Rahat and Sultan had a daughter named Shaheen. She would later star in Maha Sangram and marry Sumeet Saigal. Shaheen is also the mother of actress Sayesha Saigal.

Grandchildren are Mehboob Ayub Khan, Yasmin Khan. They from son Ayub's second marriage to Farida Moriswala.

Grandson Aslam Khan was a assistant director in the film Raavan (1984). He had planned a film titled "Raid" with Raaj Kumar in 1982. The film got shelved.

Married twice. From his first marriage to Fatima Bibi he had children Ayub Khan (passed away 2008),Iqbal Khan,Shaukat Khan (Married to Sue),Najma Sayed(Married to Moiyuddin),Mumtaz Khan (Married to director Afzal Khan),Zubeida Imam (Married to movie Mahaanta presenter Nasir Khan). From his second marriage to Sardar Akhtar he had no children.

Younged sister name is Amine Saiyeed. She was producing the shelved film, Mehboob Film Combines "Khuda Aur Insaan" (1976). Starring Sunil Dutt,Rajendra Kumar, Asha Parekh,Vidya Sinha,Vikram,Sajid Khan,Simple Kapadia,Aruna Irani,Amjad Khan, Music Naushad, Produced by Amine Saiyeed ( Younger sister of Mehboob Khan), Directed by Naresh Kumar.

Son Ayub Khan was to produce Jabbar Patel's directorial "Musafir", but the deal did not work out. He later produced the movie Mahaanta.
