A Mexican Affair Created and performed by Rafa Reyes Produced and directed by Jeremy Williams The Metropolitan Room, NYC Saturday, April 8, 2017
What keeps A Mexican Affair -- cabaret show headlined by Rafa Reyes and backed by a fine Latin group -- going? It is the immense personable charm and contagious self-delight of Rafa himself, coupled with the powerful support he receives from the quintet behind him. This young singer from Mexico, who came to the United States to attend New York’s American Musical and Dramatic Academy, certainly has “that something” and it bespeaks of the kind of presence that compels an audience to stay with him and see what will unfold. That’s no mean feat in the world of solo cabaret performing (or in solo performing of any kind). The seasoned New York cabaret audience knows immediately if the performer in front of them is up to something,...

I should probably start by reiterating a very key point:
I don't care about diversity.
Despite being a latino actor, myself, and being the nephew of Elizabeth Peña- who was a role model for many hispanic actors- I've really never batted an eyelash over the idea of diversity on television or a desire to be represented on screens both big and small. For me, personally, when considering what movie to watch, what network to tune into, or which artist to support, it all boils down to one question: Does it interest me? I don't see skin color. I don't see gender. I see an opportunity for entertainment, and ask myself if it's something I'd like to check out.
With that said, I do find it cool when I see certain marginalized groups get recognition in an organic and natural way. In last week's column "Will Latino Audiences Continue To...

Though he’s not actually in full flaming-skull mode just yet, the first batch of promotional images for the upcoming season 4 premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. do provide us with a glimpse of Gabriel Luna (Matador, Wicked City) as Robbie Reyes, who we will see transform into the Spirit of Vengeance at some point.
The stills also feature Agents May (Ming-Na Wen) and Mackenzie (Henry Simmons), who will be heading up some kind of top secret “specialist strike teams”. This has led to speculation that S.H.I.E.L.D.’s counter-terrorist Special Mission Unit, S.T.R.I.K.E., might also be making their debut.

It was officially announced at Comic-Con that Ghost Rider will be making his debut in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Either way, it’s a version of Ghost Rider, and fans seems to be pretty excited about his inclusion in the series. The character will play a big role in the upcoming season, and in an interview with ComicBook.com, Executive Producer Jeph Loeb talked about his excitement about using the character in the series and explained why they went with the Reyes version of the character.
“It’s incredibly exciting, and I know a lot of people were speculating on it. Not only is it exciting to be able to tell people that it's Robbie Reyes, but that we have this unbelievably cool car, that 1969 black Charger that...

Continuing the Marvel news from New York Comic-Con 2013, Marvel have announced another new series for their All-New Marvel Now! line-up in 2014, this time featuring the all-star creative team of Superior Spider-Man writer Dan Slott and Ff artist Mike Allred: Silver Surfer. Slott talked about the changes he’s brought to the character, notably the addition of a female companion for the cosmic herald:
“When you think of the Silver Surfer, you think of the lone sentinel of the skyways. He’s always very lonely on that board all by himself. And this is a book about a girl onboard … a kindred spirit who’s an Earth girl. And you’re going to find out the universe is more fun when you see it with someone.”
Also being released next year will be an Iron Patriot series from writer Ales Kot and artist Garry Brown where the Iron Man character...

5. Ally Condie
Starting the list off at number five is Ally Condie and her Matched trilogy. The series follows protagonist Cassia Reyes in a dystopian future where people are paired up for marriage by Society. Love and attraction don’t play a part in the matching of the newly turned seventeen year olds, but rather the pairing is strictly based on science and algorithms. When Cassia is paired up with her childhood best friend, Xander Carrow, her future looks bright, until she begins to fall in love with Ky Markham, an outcast amongst their society.
While it seems that all popular young adult novels these days fall under the dystopian banner, Condie’s work is both gripping and greatly refreshing. And while her book does play with the ever present teenage love triangle, hers doesn’t feel forced or generic. Cassia’s doubt, fear and uncertainty come across as genuine,...

With Trask Industries "celebrating its 50th anniversary" by launching a super informative website (it also ties into "X-Men: Days of Future Past"—sshhh!), suddently Sentinels are all the rage! People can't stop talking about the giant, purple, mutant-hunting robots—and rightfully so! Need I reiterate that they are giant purple robots? It does not get much cooler than that.
The robotic foes have been a thorn in the X-Men's side since their early days, and the mechanical menaces have popped up in everything from video games to cartoons over the franchise's 50 years of existence. Truthfully, we could easily do more than one Required Reading post about the Sentinels—and we could even throw in a Required Watching or two ("Final Decision" from "X-Men" season one!). But when it comes down to the most essential Sentinel stories, here are the five that made the cut.

The prolific character actor best remembered for his role as Crazy Cat from F Troop has passed away at the age of 90. Don Diamond had been fighting Parkinson's disease and other medical issues.
Diamond frequently played Mexican or Native American characters but his father was a first generation immigrant from Russia. Diamond studied drama at the University of Michigan and later earned a commission in the Us Army Air Corps. He as fluent in Yiddish already and learned Spanish while stationed in New Mexico during the second World War.
When he was discharged in 1946, he started acting on radio and frequently played Mexicans or Spaniards. This led to him being cast in The Adventures of Kit Carson TV show and then as Corp. Reyes in the 1950s Zorro TV series. The latter would signal the start of his long association with Zorro.

In science and philosophy, there are several so-called multiverse theories that propose - as the name suggests - the existence of many different universes.
The term multiverse was coined in 1895 so the idea has clearly been around for a while; among the theories is the many worlds interpretation (or Mwi) which claims that every possible outcome of every event exists in its own reality.
These heady and exciting concepts have proved very useful to science fiction writers. Examples include the local, independent film Triple Hit, which featured three versions of the Earth and its inhabitants; and TV dramas such as Fringe, whose storyline features a parallel universe.
To those examples you can add the upcoming movie 15 Till Midnight, which wrapped principal photography and showed off its first trailer in May last year. A new poster for the project has been unveiled and is featured above.

Dwayne Johnson's career is an enigma. It's been mentioned before, most eloquently in Agent Bedhead's career assessment, but he's got all of the tools to be a Hollywood superstar. He's handsome, built like a Greek god, funny, self-effacing, and a pretty decent actor with a natural combination of physical strength and solid comedic timing. He also starred in The Tooth Fairy and The Game Plan, two brutally unfunny films. Go figure. 2003's The Rundown was meant to be Johnson's second big film (the first being the terrible The Scorpion King), and should have firmly established him as the leader of the next generation of action superstars. Instead, it didn't make its money back, and he's inexplicably settled into a series of roles in drab comedies and uninspired family-friendly PG fare.
Which is a shame, because The Rundown is an absolute blast. It's big, dumb, goofy fun, some of the...
