Retired Vampire Diaries Star Might Return to Acting for Potential Revival of Another Series
Image
After bringing the vampire Damon Salvatore to life in the hit TV show The Vampire Diaries, actor Ian Somerhalder went on to star in one season of the Netflix vampire series V Wars. The short-lived series marked his final acting role, as Somerhalder retired after its cancelation to focus on other endeavors.

While at the Environmental Media Association Awards Gala in October, Somerhalder spoke with People about the life he lives now with wife Nikki Reed, who also appeared in V Wars. Somerhalder reaffirmed that he has no plans at this time to revisit his acting career, feeling like it's more than likely "in the rearview mirror" of his life. However, the former actor also teased that he'd gotten the rights back for V Wars, hinting that there could be a potential continuation that he'd be a part of. The biggest problem, as Somerhalder also explained, is that his life...

‘We Are Zombies’ Review
Image
Stars: Alexandre Nachi, Derek Johns, Megan Peta Hill, Vincent Leclerc, Benz Antoine, Carlo Mestroni, Guy Nadon, Patrick Abellard | Written by Jerry Frisson, Francois Simard, Anouk Whissell | Directed by Francois Simard, Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell

Knowing this film comes from Rkss – the Canadian filmmaking collective composed of François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell – I couldn’t wait to see it. These three previously created Turbo Kid and Summer of ‘84. Both excellent movies, with Turbo Kid being one of my very favourite movies. They also have another film out this year – Wake Up – which looks just as great, but for now, I was happy to watch We Are Zombies.

The first thing to note about the movie is that it’s not the usual zombie movie. The directors have tried to do something a little bit different. We see a city infested with the living-impaired — also known as non-cannibal zombies — and...

Marc-André Grondin in Mafia Inc (2019)
New Trailer for Quebecois Crime Drama 'Mafia Inc' from Daniel Grou
Marc-André Grondin in Mafia Inc (2019)
"Godfather or Pope, I don't want to see you or your family of crooks!" Film Movement has released the official US trailer for mafia crime drama Mafia Inc, made in Montreal by filmmaker Quebecois filmmaker Daniel Grou. Set in Montreal in the 90s, the film tells the story of the Gamache family, tailors for the Paternò Mafia family for generations. Vince works on behalf of Frank the godfather with his eldest son, and seeks to earn his stripes by impressing him, but goes too far and ends up starting a war. Based on the book with the subtitle: "The Long, Bloody Reign of Canada's Sicilian Clan." Starring Marc-André Grondin as Vince, along with Sergio Castellitto, Cristina Rosato, Benz Antoine, Mylène Mackay, Domenic Di Rosa, Gilbert Sicotte, Mark Day, Pina Di Blasi, Rafael Petardi, & Ali Hassan. This actually looks pretty good, with all the usual mafia tropes, but still cool to...

’19-2: Complete Series One’ DVD Review
Stars: Adrian Holmes, Jared Keeso, Dan Petronijevic, Benz Antoine, Mylène Dinh-Robic, Conrad Pla, Maxim Roy, Bruce Ramsay, Laurence Leboeuf | Directed by Louis Choquette, Erik Canuel, Daniel Grou

19-2? Precinct 19, Car 2. It’s simple as that. A series title that upholds a long-standing tradition of cop shows throughout the years that use designators in their titles, from the likes of Car 54 Where Are You? to the more recent 10-8: Officers on Duty. 19-2 also continues the more modern tradition of the gritty cop drama, heavily influenced by the likes of cable TV dramas The Shield and The Wire – with the same hardened sensibilities, only this time with a Canadian twist…

Interestingly, 19-2 – as seen on this DVD – is not the original version of the show. This particular iteration of the cop drama is actually an Englich-language remake of the series, which was originally set in Montreal and filmed entirely in French.

‘Ice Soldiers’ Review
Stars: Dominic Purcell, Michael Ironside, Adam Beach, Gabriel Hogan, Benz Antoine, Camille Sullivan | Written by Jonathan Tydor | Directed by Sturla Gunnarsson

It’s safe to say I had some rather high (or low depending on your movie-cheese tolerance) expectations for Ice Soldiers. After all, the film comes from the pen of Jonathan Tydor, who wrote the fantastically over-the-top and ridiculously cheesy Dolph Lundgren-starring sci-fi horror Dark Angel, aka I Come in Peace, back in 1990 and despite a substantial 13 year gap between scripts (he last wrote and directed the Eric Roberts film The Kings Guard in 2000), I still had hopes that this films concept meant the movie would err on the (right) side of insanity…

The film follows a scientific expedition that unearths three genetically engineered Russian super soldiers (the titular Ice Soldiers) frozen in ice since the height of the Cold War. Bodies that have been buried beneath the...

2011 Venice Days: Lou Ye, Amigorena, Vallée, Youssef, Elkabetz and Frederick Wiseman
Now that we're done salivating over the unveiling of the Gala and Special Presentation screenings for 2011 Toronto Int. Film Festival, we now put our attention on the official selection of the Venice Film Festival sidebar know as Venice Days. Director Giorgio Gosetti has mounted an edition that includes some gem auteurs and newbie filmmakers we've been keeping tabs on for the better half of 2010/2011. For the most part consists of French productions and of the "12 feature films in the Official Selection, three Special Events, one short opening film and two special collaborations," Lou Ye's Love and Bruises - a film that was a tad not ready for Cannes is indeed ready to go on the Lido. We've been thinking great things about the film the moment Tahar Rahim was announced as the lead, hot tempered character. The second name that sticks out is vet documentarian Frederick Wiseman who last explored...

Radio-Canada Renews '19-2' for a 2nd Season
After many months of speculation, Radio-Canada, a French Canadian TV network, has finally confirm that it will renew the procedural series 19-2.

According to Richard Therrien, a journalist from Le Soleil, Jocelyn Deschênes saved the show by joining it as a producer. After all, even though the first season was produced by Luc Châtelain et Pierre Beaudry, Radio-Canada wanted the inclusion of "an experienced producer" in order to renew 19-2 for a second season.

However, Therrien didn't confirm if Châtelain and Beaudry will return for the second season of 19-2 as producers.

The production on the show will begin in Spring 2012.

With the renewal, we will still follow the daily life of two cops from Montreal who happen to be partners (Claude Legault and Réal Bossé). Even though they hate each other, they learn to work together. Moreover, the first season left us when Ben Chartier (Claude Legault), a mole...

Canadian action thriller Exit 67 is coming to theatres, across Canada, April 1st. But, this is no joke and neither are the themes in Jephté Bastien first film. “Sortie 67″ – Having Hard Times
Sortie 67

Directed by Bastien Jephté

Written by Bastien Jephté

Canada, 2010

It isn’t every day that you get to witness a film like Bastien Jephté’s Sortie 67 – a rough and raw film that looks into Montréal Nord / St-Michel gang fares. Montréal, a city in which crime films have generally surrounded its infamous biker wars, serves as a menacing backdrop where its citizens can only refer to it as a “jungle.” Made up of predominantly up and coming actors, Sortie 67 battles through its rawness, keeping the scale balanced although wavering at times between its oft-forced performances and genuine honesty.

We don’t have to think far back to find similarities to Jephté’s ç. In theaters worldwide, gang life has been a hot film topic and well documented. Films like John Singleton’s Boyz N the Hood marked the beginning of a new era of street films, at...

Sortie 67 (2010)
Jephté Bastien's Sortie 67 is his first feature film. It's also the first Canadian film ever to deal with the problems of street gangs in the St-Michel and North-Montreal, two poor districts of Montreal. Hopefully, the film doesn't glorify crime.

A dead black mom. A white father (Sylvio Archambault) in prison for the murder of his wife. These are the two reasons that brought Ronald (Henri Prado), a young guy from St-Michel, in thirteen foster families. Because he hates school, Henri gets recruited by a new family: a street gang led by Brooklyn (Benz Antoine). After he had passed Brooklyn's loyalty test, which consisted in killing someone, Henri adopts the nickname of Jecko. As he commits a plethora of crimes, Ronald waits for the day when his father will get out of prison and to kill him. However, because he has a daughter and a wife who's ashamed of him,...

Teaser of 'Sortie 67'
While French Quebecker mainstream films - which are mostly shot in Montreal, mind you - keep pretending that ethnic minorities don't exist, it's a blessing that our independent films take the time to look at them. One Love
Honestly, I had a really hard time with the online screener of this short, for it's a really huge file. Other than that, watching this fifteen-minute short was such a great pleasure because One Love is a fascinating exploration of what it means to be waiting for a child.

The story briefly follows different people who are either facing the fortune or the misfortune of starting a family.

Lucy (Vanessa Matsui) is a woman who severed her ties with her family.
