The film is adapted from the classic 1942 novella of the same name by Albert Camus, and marks French filmmaker Ozon’s fourth time in Venice Competition.

Benjamin Voisin, who starred in Ozon’s Summer Of ’85, reteams with the director to play the film’s protagonist Meursault, an unassuming Frenchman living in 1930s Algeria. After his mother’s death, he slips back into his usual routine, and begins an affair with a work colleague. However, his daily life...

‘Arco’ Review: Natalie Portman Produces French Time-Traveling Rainbow-Colored ‘Toon With Climate Change Message And ‘E.T.’ Influences – Annecy Animation Film Festival
Image
Don’t be confused by the title. The new French animated film Arco that debuted at Cannes in May and is at France’s Annecy Animated Film Festival this week is not about a gas station.

Instead, this debut feature film from illustrator and graphic novel creator Ugo Bienvenu has much on its mind and was quickly snapped up after its Cannes debut for U.S. distribution by busy buyer Neon, which no doubt sniffed a similar kind of potential success like its utterly delightful Robot Dreams which landed an Animated Feature Oscar nomination in 2023. Even more to the point, Neon may sense a successor to a sleeper animated hit that also initially debuted in Cannes last year, the miraculous Latvian Flow, which not only was nominated as Best International Feature (a first for that country) but actually won Best Animated Feature over heavyweight competition from behemoths Disney/Pixar, DreamWorks and Netflix.

Neon Taking Rights To Natalie Portman Cannes Animation ‘Arco’
Natalie Portman at an event for Arco (2025)
Exclusive: Neon is closing up a deal for rights to Natalie Portman-voiced animation Arco, which recently launched at the Cannes Film Festival.

French director Ugo Bienvenu’s animated feature, which has been described as “France’s answer to Studio Ghibli”, is about a boy who uses rainbows to travel through time and his adventures as he gets stuck in the wrong era.

Oscar winner Portman is also producing with Sophie Mas under their joint Paris and New York banner MountainA with Félix de Givry at Paris-based Remembers.

It’s another win for Neon, which has been voracious once again at Cannes, also acquiring The Secret Agent, It Was Just An Accident and Sirat, in addition to Sentimental Value, which they already had.

Taking its cue from the fantasy premise that rainbows are time machines, the movie revolves around 10 year old rainbow-child Arco, who lives in the distant future, 2932. His...

‘Arco’ Review: In Charming, Natalie Portman-Produced French Animated Film, a Boy From the Future Must Find His Way Home
Image
In Arco, French illustrator Ugo Bienvenu couches a considered meditation on ecological disaster within the dulcet grooves of a charming story about adolescent friendship. The debut feature, which premiered at Cannes as a special screening (and counts Natalie Portman among its producers), follows a 10-year-old boy (voiced by Oscar Tresanini) from the future whose maiden time travel voyage goes terribly awry. He lands in the year 2075, where he meets a girl his age (Margot Ringard Oldra) who tries to help him return home. Their adventure takes place during a critical period in Earth’s history and becomes a lesson for both children about the natural world and the enduring impact of meaningful bonds.

This might be Bienvenu’s first film, but the director’s interest in rendering the future and considering the stakes of technology on humanity stretch back a long time. His graphic novel System Preference, which has already...

Image
A group of more than 350 international actors, directors and producers have signed a letter published on the first day of Cannes condemning the killing of Fatma Hassona, the Palestinian photojournalist and protagonist of the festival-bound documentary “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk,” in an Israeli airstrike.

The letter, signed by names such as Mark Ruffalo, Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, Melissa Barrera, Yorgos Lanthimos, Javier Bardem, Hannah Einbinder, Pedro Almodóvar, David Cronenberg, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Leigh, Alex Gibney, Viggo Mortensen, Cynthia Nixon, Tessa Ross and many more, also called out the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ for its “lack of support” for “No Other Land” co-director Hamdan Ballal.

Just three weeks after winning the Oscar for the documentary, Ballal was assaulted by settlers and kidnapped by the Israeli army. After being criticized for its silence over the incident, AMPAS eventually publicly apologized. “We are ashamed of such passivity,...

Anatomy Of A Fall Ending Explained: Did Sandra Kill Her Husband?
Image
Living with a spouse or life partner can be rough at times, and it is usually a couple's ability to soldier through difficult spells together that shows the true strength of their relationship. Introducing a child into the mix can also be challenging, often changing the dynamic and sometimes even upending traditional parental roles. But what if one of those rough patches ended with the sudden death of a partner?

That is the situation that Justine Triet presents in the opening moments of her Palme d'Or-winner "Anatomy of a Fall." However, she takes it one step further by adding another nightmarish layer to the scenario: What if the remaining partner became the prime suspect in her spouse's death and had to suffer the ignominy and stress of having her marriage raked over in court while also grieving her loss?

It's not exactly an original setup; murder mysteries focusing on a...

‘Sukkwan Island’ Review: A Melancholic Father-Son Bonding Tale That Takes an Increasingly Harsh Turn
Image
American writer David Vann’s 2008 book “Legend of a Suicide” is a striking, classification-averse work — not quite fiction or memoir, novel or short story collection — that ultimately amounts to an exercise in potent literary catharsis for its author: Vann veils, rewrites or sometimes fabricates events from his own family history in order to accept and understand the untimely death of his father. It’s the kind of singularly subjective writing, steered by a personal perspective bound to no storytelling rules but its own, that presents a challenge to any outside interpreters. So it makes sense that “Sukkwan Island,” French writer-director Vladimir de Fontenay’s handsome, elegiac take on Vann’s tale, specifically adapts the one segment of the book that is told in the third person: a nearly self-contained novella that finds the author standing outside his own experience, but not outside a grief that pervades both memory and imagination.

‘Sukkwan Island’ Review: A Rugged and Intimate Survival Story Upended by a Fatal Final Twist
Image
Movies about irresponsible parenting in the great outdoors have become something of an arthouse subgenre over the past decade. Matt Ross’ Captain Fantastic, Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace, India Donaldson’s Good One and Philippe Lesage’s Who by Fire all feature children coming of age in the wilderness as their fathers mess up in one way or another. If there’s perhaps one takeaway from all of these films, it’s to be on guard the next time your dad asks you to go on a long hike or camping trip.

Unfortunately, such a warning was never issued to Roy (Woody Norman), the 13-year-old protagonist of French writer-director Vladimir de Fontenay’s latest feature, Sukkwan Island. Embarking with his father, Tom (Swann Arlaud), on an extended séjour to an isolated cabin somewhere in the Norwegian fjords, Roy soon finds himself facing various life or death scenarios while Tom gradually flies off the handle.

‘Sukkwan Island’ Director Vladimir de Fontenay on Adapting ‘Legend of a Suicide’ Into a Psychological Sundance Thriller: ‘It’s a Tragedy, but One About Resilience’
Image
Filming “Sukkwan Island,” a visceral psychological thriller premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, provided its French director Vladimir de Fontenay and everyone involved in the multi-national production with an epic yet transformative experience, mirroring that of the film’s protagonists.

Adapted from David Vann’s harrowing “Legend of a Suicide,” “Sukkwan Island” tells the story of 13 year-old, Roy, who agrees to spend a year of adventure with his estranged father, Tom, deep in the Norwegian fjords. Faced with the harsh realities of the relentless Arctic weather, the pair’s journey turns into a test of survival and brings out their inner turmoils.

De Fontenay’s follow-up to his 2017 feature debut “Mobile Homes,” “Sukkwan Island” was a passion project. He chased rights to the novel for years after his father gave him the book to read. The NYU grad was stunned when he was coincidentally contacted by Carole Scotta and Caroline Benjo,...

Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

At the end of Anatomy of a Fall, Sandra is acquitted, although the facts of the case still aren't entirely clear, making the true cause of Samuel's death ambiguous. The 2023 movie is a legal drama from French director Justine Triet, featuring performances from Sandra Hller, Swann Arlaud, Samuel Theis, Milo Machado Graner, and more. Anatomy of a Fall received great reviews and enjoyed lots of awards success, winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and picking up five Oscars 2024 nominations, winning for Best Original Screenplay.

After the mysterious death of her husband, Samuel (Samuel Theis), Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hller) becomes the prime suspect. Sandra's best defense is to claim Samuel died by suicide, which even she tells her lawyer, Vincent (Swann Arlaud), is implausible at first. Cannes Workers Turn Pre-Fest Meet into Strike Rally
Image
Cannes festival workers turned a pre-festival meet-and-greet event into a spontaneous strike rally on Sunday, applauding representatives from the Sous les écrans la dèche collective, a group that has called for a walkout by freelance workers to disrupt this year’s event.

On Sunday, May 12, festival workers were invited to meet with management for a pre-festival cocktail and informal welcome, something that happens every year before the festival kicks off.

But this time, members of the Sous les écrans distributed badges and stickers for workers to show their solidarity with the group’s demands, which include a general strike of “all employees of the Cannes Film Festival and of its sidebars” in protest of what the group terms the “precarious” position of freelancer workers at the event.

In a video sent to The Hollywood Reporter by a member of Sous les écrans, workers can be seen applauding the group’s spokesman and cheering him on.

Cannes Festival Workers Group Calls for Strike Action
Image
A French collective representing the interests of French film festival workers has called for a general strike of “all employees of the Cannes Film Festival and of its sidebars.”

The Sous les écrans la dèche (Broke Behind the Screens) collective made the call in a public statement Monday.

The group has long been sounding the alarm about the precarious nature of film festival work, which typically involves short-term freelance contracts. But unlike other so-called intermediate workers in the entertainment industry, many festival workers are not covered by France’s unemployment insurance program, meaning they do not qualify for unemployment benefits in between jobs or projects.

The Sous les écrans noted that the latest set of benefit reforms, set to go through July 1, will further tighten the rules for employees.

“These reforms are throwing festival workers in such precariousness that the majority of us will have to give up our jobs,...

Cannes goes to the dogs as Messi from Anatomy of a Fall gets his own TV show at the annual film festival
Image
I hope they serve biscuits and dog food at the Cannes Film Festival because Messi, the Border Collie from Justin Triet’s Academy Award-winning drama Anatomy of a Fall, is making his way to the annual celebration of film in France. D18 Paris says Messi is getting his own short program at Cannes, though it’s separate from the festival lineup. According to its description, the experience allows audiences to observe the fest “through the eyes and the voice of Messi.”

“This will be an opportunity for Messi to ask his guest any questions with the innocence of a dog,” says D18 Paris. “When you’re the current international star, you can do anything… and Messi dares to do it all!”

Referred to as the George Clooney of dogs, Messi is Hollywood’s good boy with better manners than most actors. Still, what is the Messi TV show? Messi: The...

Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller is reportedly in talks to join Liam Neeson’s The Naked Gun reboot
Image
Anatomy of a Fall actress Sandra Hüller could be making a roast for Akiva Schaffer’s The Naked Gun reboot, so how hot and wet do you like it? A report from industry insider Daniel Richtman says Sandra Hüller is in talks to play the romantic lead in the forthcoming comedy, starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s Lt. Frank Drebin from the Police Squad series and Naked Gun film trilogy.

In the Naked Gun trilogy, Lt. Frank Drebin falls in love with Jane Spencer (Lisa Marie Presley), an assistant for industrialist Vincent Ludwig, utterly unaware of his villainy. After a slapstick-ridden meet-cute, Frank and Jane form a heated courtship accompanied by steamy home-cooked meals, ultra-protected sex, and trips to the baseball field.

How Liam Neeson and Hüller’s characters cross paths in the Naked Gun reboot remains a mystery. We must also wait...

The Ending of Anatomy of a Fall, Explained
Image
Anatomy of a Fall captivates with an engaging courtroom drama, leaving us questioning the complexity of truly knowing another person. Director Justine Triet leaves the ending open to interpretation, highlighting the struggle in understanding the morally gray nature of people. The film is a coming-of-age story for Daniel, struggling to reconcile the image of his parents amidst a bittersweet conclusion.

The last few months have been incredibly kind to Anatomy of a Fall, winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. In addition to immense critical and audience acclaim, the film had a phenomenal awards season run, getting multiple wins at various critics groups around the country, and capped it off with an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. It's easy to see why — the film, focused on a writer accused of murdering her husband and trying to clear her name, is a thoroughly engaging courtroom drama and...

In the Shadows (Dans L’Ombre) comes from Versailles and Rembrandt director Pierre Schoeller, who adapted a novel from former French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and Gilles Boyer, a political insider who served as Philippe’s advisor.

The series stars Swann Arlaud as...

Oscar Standout Messi The Dog Gave One Of The Best Performances Of The Year
Image
The Academy Award-winning French courtroom thriller "Anatomy of a Fall" is one seriously chilly movie. It's visually quite cold, taking place in winter in the mountains, and its characters are equally icy. Not even a cover of 50 Cent's "P.I.M.P" played on the typically breezy steel drums can warm it up, but there's one magical element in the movie that manages to make things feel a bit less freezing: the dog Snoop, played by Messi the border collie. Messi is the Mvp of "Anatomy of a Fall," and that's really saying something considering the film's powerhouse performances from Sandra Hüller, Milo Machado Graner, and Swann Arlaud (Hüller is nominated for Best Actress for her role). Messi won the Palm Dog this past year, which is like the Palm d'Or but for dog performers at Cannes, but he doesn't stand a chance of winning any Oscars at the Academy Awards.

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Wins Oscar for Best Original Screenplay
Image
Crank up that steel drum cover of 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P”! “Anatomy of a Fall” has scored the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Director Justine Triet and her husband and co-writer Arthur Harari took the stage at the Dolby Theater on March 10 to accept the trophy.

In winning the award, Triet and Harari beat out several other Best Picture nominees to claim the top prize. Also nominated in the category were David Hemingson for “The Holdovers,” Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer for “Maestro,” and Celine Song for “Past Lives.” The sole non-Best Picture nominee recognized in the category was “May December,” which received its sole Oscar nomination for Samy Burch’s script.

The Original Screenplay Oscar is the latest award that Triet’s courtroom drama received during the past Awards season. Triet and Harari won in the same category at the British Academy Film Awards, the Golden Globes, and the French César Awards.

Theater of Truth: On "Anatomy of a Fall"
Image
Anatomy of a Fall.Anatomy of a Fall (2023) begins with a black screen and an auditory fragment: a short exchange between writer Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hüller) and a young student who’s come to interview her about her career. When the film’s image and sound come into sync, both of them realize that the student’s phone has failed to record their conversation. Reality, seemingly, starts only when the “record” button has been pressed. We never see the titular fall in Justine Triet’s courtroom drama, only a corpse. The moment when Sandra’s husband, Samuel Maleski (Samuel Theis), plunges to his death from the attic of their chalet is presented only in simulations, both speculative flashbacks based on courtroom testimony and technical reenactments from expert witnesses. Though a trial is ostensibly a search for the truth, Triet's film is a metacinematic treatise on epistemology, showing only so much...
